Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling With Autonomous Learning Effects, Jordan M. Ticktin Dec 2019

Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling With Autonomous Learning Effects, Jordan M. Ticktin

Master's Theses

It's commonly assumed that experience leads to efficiency, yet this is largely unaccounted for in resource-constrained project scheduling. This thesis considers the idea that learning effects could allow selected activities to be completed within reduced time, if they're scheduled after activities where workers learn relevant skills. This paper computationally explores the effect of this autonomous, intra-project learning on optimal makespan and problem difficulty. A learning extension is proposed to the standard RCPSP scheduling problem. Multiple parameters are considered, including project size, learning frequency, and learning intensity. A test instance generator is developed to adapt the popular PSPLIB library of scheduling …

Performance Enhancement And Characterization Of An Electromagnetic Railgun, Paul M. Gilles Dec 2019

Performance Enhancement And Characterization Of An Electromagnetic Railgun, Paul M. Gilles

Master's Theses

Collision with orbital debris poses a serious threat to spacecraft and astronauts. Hypervelocity impacts resulting from collisions mean that objects with a mass less than 1g can cause mission-ending damage to spacecraft. A means of shielding spacecraft against collisions is necessary. A means of testing candidate shielding methods for their efficacy in mitigating hypervelocity impacts is therefore also necessary. Cal Poly’s Electromagnetic Railgun was designed with the goal of creating a laboratory system capable of simulating hypervelocity (≥ 3 km/s) impacts. Due to several factors, the system was not previously capable of high-velocity (≥ 1 km/s) tests. A deficient projectile …

Individual Goal Orientations, Team Empowerment, And Employee Creative Performance: A Case Of Cross-Level Interactions, Yi Liu, Shuhong Wang, Xiang Yao Dec 2019

Individual Goal Orientations, Team Empowerment, And Employee Creative Performance: A Case Of Cross-Level Interactions, Yi Liu, Shuhong Wang, Xiang Yao

School of Business Faculty Research

Intrigued by relationship between team motivational context and individual characteristics in the organizational reality, we developed and tested a cross-level model to investigate the interactive effects of team empowerment and individual goal orientations on individual creative performance through the mediating mechanism of an individual's creative self-efficacy. Using multi-wave multi-source data from 63 R&D teams in three IT companies, we found that (1) team empowerment, individual learning goal orientation, and individual performance orientation are all positively related to individual creative performance through mediation of creative self-efficacy; (2) learning orientation and performance approach orientation could both supplement the effects of team empowerment …

Caesarean Section Rates In South Asian Cities: Can Midwifery Help Stem The Rise?, Sulochana Dhakal Rai, Amudha Poobalan, Rafat Jan, Malin Bogren, Juliet Wood, Ganesh Dangal, Pramod Regmi, Edwin Van Teijlingen, Keshar Bahadur Dhakal, Sahib Jan Badar, Farhana Shahid

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Introduction: Caesarean section (CS) is a life-saving surgical intervention for delivering a baby when complications arisein childbirth. World Health Organization recommends a rate of CS from 10% to 15%. However, CS rates increased steadily in recent decades and have almost doubled from 12.1% in 2000 to 21.1% in 2015. Therefore, this has become a global public health problem. The main purpose of the scoping review article is to give an overview and analysis of the rising CS use in four South Asian countries: Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan.
Methods: A scoping review was carried-out using several bibliographic electronic databases (MEDLINE, …

Factors Related To Adverse Mental Health Condition Of Demented Family Caregivers: A Study In West Bengal, India, Ipsita Basu, Susmita Mukhopadhyay

Journal Articles

Dementia caregiving is a unique and the caregivers faces extreme challenges which affect care-giver's mental health adversely. Family caregiving towards elderly individuals with dementia is becoming widespread. The study aims to evaluate the mental health status of dementia family caregivers and some related factors that affect their mental health condition. Present cross sectional study includes a total of 134 family caregivers. Socio-demographic and caregiving related data were collected using pre-tested questionnaires. Standardized questionnaires were used to collect data on caregivers' mental health traits (measured in terms of level of stress and anxiety), level of psychosocial distress, support they provided and …

Bio-Chemical Assay Locking To Thwart Bio-Ip Theft, Sukanta Bhattacharjee, Jack Tang, Sudip Poddar, Mohamed Ibrahim, Ramesh Karri, Krishnendu Chakrabarty

It is expected that as digital microfluidic biochips (DMFBs) mature, the hardware design flow will begin to resemble the current practice in the semiconductor industry: design teams send chip layouts to third-party foundries for fabrication. These foundries are untrusted and threaten to steal valuable intellectual property (IP). In a DMFB, the IP consists of not only hardware layouts but also of the biochemical assays (bioassays) that are intended to be executed on-chip. DMFB designers therefore must defend these protocols against theft. We propose to “lock” biochemical assays by inserting dummy mix-split operations. We experimentally evaluate the proposed locking mechanism, and …

Journal Articles

The current investigation has identified the biomarkers associated with severity of disability and correlation among plethora of systemic, cellular and molecular parameters of intellectual disability (ID) in a rehabilitation home. The background of study lies with the recent clinical evidences which identified complications in ID. Various indicators from blood and peripheral system serve as potential surrogates for disability related changes in brain functions. ID subjects (Male, age 10 ± 5 yrs, N = 45) were classified as mild, moderate and severe according to the severity of disability using standard psychometric analysis. Clinical parameters including stress biomarkers, neurotransmitters, RBC morphology, expressions …

A Powerful Method To Integrate Genotype And Gene Expression Data For Dissecting The Genetic Architecture Of A Disease, Sarmistha Das, Partha Pratim Majumder, Raghunath Chatterjee, Aditya Chatterjee, Indranil Mukhopadhyay Dec 2019

A Powerful Method To Integrate Genotype And Gene Expression Data For Dissecting The Genetic Architecture Of A Disease, Sarmistha Das, Partha Pratim Majumder, Raghunath Chatterjee, Aditya Chatterjee, Indranil Mukhopadhyay

Journal Articles

To decipher the genetic architecture of human disease, various types of omics data are generated. Two common omics data are genotypes and gene expression. Often genotype data for a large number of individuals and gene expression data for a few individuals are generated due to biological and technical reasons, leading to unequal sample sizes for different omics data. Unavailability of standard statistical procedure for integrating such datasets motivates us to propose a two-step multi-locus association method using latent variables. Our method is powerful than single/separate omics data analysis and it unravels comprehensively deep-seated signals through a single statistical model. Extensive …

When Spillovers Enhance R&D Incentives, Rittwik Chatterjee, Srobonti Chattopadhyay, Tarun Kabiraj Dec 2019

When Spillovers Enhance R&D Incentives, Rittwik Chatterjee, Srobonti Chattopadhyay, Tarun Kabiraj

Journal Articles

It is commonly believed that spillover reduces R&D incentives of a firm. This happens because of the appropriability problem. However, some empirical literature shows the possibility of enhanced R&D incentives under spillovers. In the literature this is explained under incomplete information, but we show this theoretically under complete information. We show in particular that in a duopoly there are situations when with no spillovers only one firm invests in R&D, but under spillovers both the firms invest. This occurs when there is complementarity in research and the spillover rate lies in an interval specified by the size of R&D investment.

Relativistic Quantum Heat Engine From Uncertainty Relation Standpoint, Pritam Chattopadhyay, Goutam Paul Dec 2019

Relativistic Quantum Heat Engine From Uncertainty Relation Standpoint, Pritam Chattopadhyay, Goutam Paul

Journal Articles

Established heat engines in quantum regime can be modeled with various quantum systems as working substances. For example, in the non-relativistic case, we can model the heat engine using infinite potential well as a working substance to evaluate the efficiency and work done of the engine. Here, we propose quantum heat engine with a relativistic particle confined in the one-dimensional potential well as working substance. The cycle comprises of two isothermal processes and two potential well processes of equal width, which forms the quantum counterpart of the known isochoric process in classical nature. For a concrete interpretation about the relation …

Unregulated Charity, Eric Franklin Amarante Dec 2019

Unregulated Charity, Eric Franklin Amarante

Washington Law Review

The vast majority of charities in the United States operate in a regulatory blind spot: they are neither meaningfully evaluated when they apply for charitable status nor substantively monitored after they receive charitable status. Driven by severe budget constraints, the IRS decided to essentially ignore any charity that claims it will realize less than $50,000 in annual gross receipts. From a practical perspective, the IRS’s decision makes sense. To the extent smaller charities are less likely to cause harm, it is reasonable (perhaps even preferable) to subject them to less scrutiny. This type of prioritization, known as risk-based regulation, has …
