An Integration Of East And West: History, Analysis And Reception Of The Yellow River Piano Concerto, Lin Tao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Yellow River Piano Concerto remains as one of a few representative and major instrumental compositions within the Chinese repertoire since it was composed in 1969. Thanks to the devoted work of Chinese pianists, the Yellow River Piano Concerto has disseminated around the world and has become a musical symbol of Chinese culture in recent years. This piano concerto serves as a tool for the cultural communication between China and the world. The Yellow River Piano Concerto has a unique ability to depict Chinese culture and history through the language of music. Its exotic pentatonic melodies and eastern orchestrations make …

Sub/Versing Mentoring Expectations: Duration, Discernment, Diffraction, Natalie Leblanc, Valerie Triggs, Rita Irwin Oct 2019

Sub/Versing Mentoring Expectations: Duration, Discernment, Diffraction, Natalie Leblanc, Valerie Triggs, Rita Irwin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The three of us have shared co-mentoring relationships over the last decade. Rita was the PhD supervisor for both Natalie and Valerie and while working with them and other PhD students, came to believe that goals are reciprocal in many ways. In this article, we attend to the concept of co-mentoring, an exchange that includes three qualities guiding ongoing artistic, professional and scholarly work. These subversive qualities are described as: a) duration, b) discernment, and c) diffraction. From a practice-based, new materialist lens, we take turns describing how each quality is important to co-mentoring relationships and we provide theoretical …

His House, Our House And Her House: A Filmic Place For Women, I Troiani Oct 2019

His House, Our House And Her House: A Filmic Place For Women, I Troiani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The most famous architects in the world are, and have always been, men, although a growing number of women architects are beginning to gain international and public recognition. Architecture, more than some other types of professions, has moved slowly to accommodate its own increasing number of women practitioners (Fowler and Wilson 2004). This is in part because of its link to ‘a specific historical and cultural construction of masculinity and a masculinist vision of professional work’ (Davies 1996: 661) within what remains to be a maledominated construction industry. A UK report documenting women’s membership into the Chartered Institute of Building …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

I have always liked to create things and make interesting pieces of artwork. Making work in the design field has been very delightful and engaging for me. Learning about how people react to imagery even when its digital or print has been one of the biggest things, I have learned from becoming an artist and focusing in graphic design. I chose to do graphic design because of my experiences with past classes and pieces that bring joy to me. As well as, the aesthetic you can achieve doing design work. Being able to create sleek, clean, and simple designs to …
