In Defense Of Grass Grows: A Play About Mental Illness, Amanda Grace Hughes Jan 2019

In Defense Of Grass Grows: A Play About Mental Illness, Amanda Grace Hughes

Honors Program Theses

My mission as a mentally ill theatre artist is to challenge the commonly-perpetuated fictions that restrict public perception of mentally ill persons [MIPs]. A meta-analysis of plays from the Greek, Medieval, Victorian, Melodramatic, Naturalist, and Post- Naturalist eras reflected just how little progress has been made at exposing and eliminating popular myths about mental illness. While the theatrical canon offers evidence for the inadequacy of current representations of MIPs, the psychological literature offers steps forward for the artists telling these stories. Efforts to improve artist sensitivity to the complex realities of mental illness fail to educate with fact alone (Dale, …

The Third Design Space: A Postcolonial Perspective On Corporate Engagement With Open Source Software Communities, Kenneth E. Kendall, Julie E. Kendall, Matt Germonprez, Lars Mathiassen Jan 2019

The Third Design Space: A Postcolonial Perspective On Corporate Engagement With Open Source Software Communities, Kenneth E. Kendall, Julie E. Kendall, Matt Germonprez, Lars Mathiassen

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Corporations increasingly engage with open source software communities in the co‐creation of software. This collaboration between corporate professionals and open source software community members is strikingly different from the early days of software development where for‐profit firms attempted to dominate and control the industry while attempting to throttle the success of independent developers offering an alternative, open source option. While many metaphors like trading zones, common pool resources and ecosystems have helped understand the phenomenon, the metaphors do not portray what the industry was like before and after the transition. We adopt a postcolonial metaphor as an analytical lens to …

And Your Little Dog Too: Witchcraft In The Cultural Imagination From The 17th To The 21st Century, Claire Craven Jan 2019

And Your Little Dog Too: Witchcraft In The Cultural Imagination From The 17th To The 21st Century, Claire Craven

Theses & ETDs

Across centuries, the figure of the witch has been used to represent cultural fears and fantasies surrounding gender and power. This thesis examines the varying cultural narratives that have emerged around the archetype of the witch. Chapter One is a reading of three 17th-century English witchcraft plays, William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606), John Ford, Thomas Dekker and William Rowley’s The Witch of Edmonton (1621), and Richard Brome and Thomas Heywood’s The Late Lancashire Witches (1634), exploring how witchcraft was portrayed in an era when it was widely believed to exist as a real phenomenon. Chapter Two explores historical fiction written about …

“¿Eres Tú, Antígona?”: Intertextuality And Representations Of Authoritarianism In Two 20th Century Retellings Of Antigone, Ari A. Plymale Jan 2019

“¿Eres Tú, Antígona?”: Intertextuality And Representations Of Authoritarianism In Two 20th Century Retellings Of Antigone, Ari A. Plymale

Theses & ETDs

This thesis aims to look at two 20th century retellings of Antigone by Sophokles, and how they use the framework of this ancient text as a means through which to discuss modern authoritarianism in the post-war era. This analysis includes an examination of Bertolt Brecht’s Die Antigone des Sophokles and José Bergamín’s La sangre de Antígona in relationship to their intertextual relationships (with Sophokles and other source texts) and the cultural-historical moment out of which each work was created. This thesis also includes a translation of the two prologues of Die Antigone des Sophokles that Brecht wrote, and a full …

Dance For Parkinson’S, Ryan Smith Jan 2019

Dance For Parkinson’S, Ryan Smith

Theses & ETDs

This thesis offers a qualitative analysis of dance classes intended for individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Through field research and semi-structured interviews with participants, carers, and instructors, I aimed to address the question, how can dance class help people negotiate changes in functioning caused by Parkinson’s Disease? I synthesize literature which suggests that dance may be a particularly beneficial activity for people living with PD, and argue that the dance for Parkinson’s model most significantly benefits the lives of participants through the contribution of an accessible dance culture.

Taking Off The Mask: Superheroism And Identity, Rachel Reimer Jan 2019

Taking Off The Mask: Superheroism And Identity, Rachel Reimer

Theses & ETDs

Since the invention of Superman in 1939, comic books have majorly influenced and have been influenced by the moral ideals of social and political movements. This study is designed to better understand the psychological impact of superheroes on the avid consumer via two routes. Through the theoretical lens of parasocial interaction, superheroes are viewed as a partner within a one-sided social exchange. Alternatively, the theory of identification depicts superheroes as a model for emulation. Using a survey method, participants were asked a series of questions regarding both parasocial and identification behaviors with superhero characters, as well as demographics information and …

The Aa Spectra Of Various Families Of Graph Products, Zachary Hanna Jan 2019

The Aa Spectra Of Various Families Of Graph Products, Zachary Hanna

Theses & ETDs

Let G be a graph on n vertices with associated adjacency matrix A(G) and degree matrix D(G). In 2016, Nikiforov defined the matrix Aa(G) = aD(G)+(1-a)A(G) for any real value a E [0; 1]. The collection of the eigenvalues of this matrix alongside their multiplicities is referred to as their Aa- spectrum, and the Aa-spectral properties of graphs has been studied since Nikiforov first introduced the matrix. In this thesis, I introduce some of the work already produced on the subject and begin to examine the relationship this spectrum has with a few graph products.

Non-Conformative Gender Expression In Manga, Visual Arts, And Fashion In Modern Japan, Hannah Oberlin Jan 2019

Non-Conformative Gender Expression In Manga, Visual Arts, And Fashion In Modern Japan, Hannah Oberlin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis will explore how gender non-conforming individuals in Japan live their lives through means of opposition to societal expectations and desire for the removal of (gendered) constraints. Through the lenses of Japanese manga, visual arts, and fashion, I will examine the history of Japan’s gender roles, how the country as a whole has been affected by gendered power dynamics, and what the current social environment is for people who do not conform to modern expectations of what gender should and should not look like. Therefore, this study will yield new understandings of how gender is conceived of in Japan, …

Dismantling Digital First: An Ethnographic Study Of The Importance Of Community Engagement For Local Publications, Michala Anne Head Jan 2019

Dismantling Digital First: An Ethnographic Study Of The Importance Of Community Engagement For Local Publications, Michala Anne Head

Theses & ETDs

The objective of this thesis was to provide a comprehensive look at local media and journalism trends in 2018 through ethnographic study of a local, lifestyle magazine. With the Internet came the new ability to communicate directly with others online. This disrupted multiple streams of revenue for traditional print publications, as this development rendered classified postings and print advertising obsolete. The circulation of information online also unfathomably increased competition for the attention of readers. My thesis research used ethnographic methods to produce qualitative findings on the strategies employed by SRQ , a local publication in Sarasota, Florida, to stay afloat …

Identity Negotiations Of Bilingual Lgbtqia+ Latinos/As/Es/Xs, Andreina Carrasquero Jan 2019

Identity Negotiations Of Bilingual Lgbtqia+ Latinos/As/Es/Xs, Andreina Carrasquero

Theses & ETDs

The following study explores how people who self-identify as LGBTQIA+, bilingual in English and Spanish, and Latino/a/x/e conceptualize and communicate their identities through language. I conducted 7 loosely structured in-depth interviews in Spanglish to investigate how people who identify as LGBTQIA+, bilingual, and Latino/a/x/e talk and make sense of their identities. I found that participants conceptualize and communicate their identities by using a narrative approach to identities, employing code-switching and Spanglish, and by providing alternate meanings to Spanish as well as changing and transforming the Spanish language. This study also explores how oppression and trauma work to impact participants’ identities …

Chiron: Self-Actualization Through Musical Performance, Myles Optimystic Rodriguez Jan 2019

Chiron: Self-Actualization Through Musical Performance, Myles Optimystic Rodriguez

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the relationship between musical performance and self-actualization. I argue that self-actualization is not a linear, step-by-step process (as suggested by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs) but rather an ongoing journey that a person engages with throughout many developmental stages of life. My research is guided by the following question: What are the ways in which musical performance can assist in the process of self-actualization? To answer this question, I examine data from loosely-structured interviews with musical artists, my own creative process, and songs from my thesis album, CHIRON. In this thesis, I discuss five themes that contribute to …

Smooth: Adapting Joyce Carol Oates For Film In The Me Too Era, Thomas Ghebrezgi Jan 2019

Smooth: Adapting Joyce Carol Oates For Film In The Me Too Era, Thomas Ghebrezgi

Theses & ETDs

My role in this thesis is that of adapter/scholar. First, I examine the 1985 film Smooth Talk (dir. Joyce Chopra) based on Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” I begin by addressing the critical discourse surrounding Chopra’s film, providing a reading of Smooth Talk that directly rebuts allegations the film is either anti-feminist or imaginatively staid. I argue Smooth Talk uses allusions to the Bible, specifically to the parable of the Levite and His Concubine, to craft a critique of the patriarchal forces that structure the world of the film’s protagonist, the teenaged …

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington Jan 2019

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington

Theses & ETDs

The medium of performance is a valuable means for engaging racial dialogue since its liveness draws attention to the performing body, allowing us to negotiate what social meanings culture has invested in bodies. However, attention to topics of race and racism in Western theatre has historically avoided confronting intersubjective dialogues about race in favor of objectifying otherized racial identities, most notably performances of blackness, to reaffirm White racial dominance. Black artists have historically worked to resist this by reframing the performance as a site of opposition. This study uses this point of tension to study the ways physicality in dance …

Population Growth And Development In Miami, Tampa, And Orlando From 1920 To 1975, Alex Sommers Jan 2019

Population Growth And Development In Miami, Tampa, And Orlando From 1920 To 1975, Alex Sommers

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to identify the main reasons for Florida’s population growth by looking at the most populous cities, Miami, Tampa, and Orlando from 1920 to 1975. Focusing on each city is similar to a case study. The main reasons for the growth are World War II & the New Deal, advertising & tourism, and transportation networks. The lesser reasons are DDT, universities, and Cuban refugees. The New Deal initiated work programs that stabilized the economy and social security helped people retire. World War II brought the economy back from the Great Depression and partially built the …

Postmodern Tiresias: Transformed Prophet For Transforming Times, Alphonse Shiver Jan 2019

Postmodern Tiresias: Transformed Prophet For Transforming Times, Alphonse Shiver

Theses & ETDs

The primary goal of this piece is to establish the figure of Tiresias as a character that has made a profound impact on artistic and literary minds over the course of millennia. It aims to draw parallels between the anxieties of particular time periods and the anxieties embodied by the character of Tiresias himself, proving his existence as a reflection of proto-transgender attitudes in Ancient Greece, demonstrating how these attitudes have carried into works including Tiresias in both the twentieth and twenty-first century while postulating the ways in which the character could be utilized by poets, playwrights, and musicians alike …

"The Forward March Of Humanity" In An Era Of Change: Creative Works With Progressive Ideas And Their Impact On Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century European Society, Alexander Koutelias Jan 2019

"The Forward March Of Humanity" In An Era Of Change: Creative Works With Progressive Ideas And Their Impact On Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century European Society, Alexander Koutelias

Theses & ETDs

This thesis analyzes the impact on European society of three creative works that contain progressive political ideas in the era prior to the Great War. The works studied were the French opera Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi (1867), the Austrian novel Lay Down Your Arms! by Bertha von Suttner (1889), and the German etching series A Weavers’ Revolt (1898) by Käthe Kollwitz. Additionally, it considers the impact of each work in its international historical context. Furthermore, it examines how the formal elements of each medium reinforce the accessibility and comprehension of the progressive political idea in each work. Finally, it …

In The Company Of Citizens: The Rhetorical Contours Of Singapore's Neoliberalism, Rohini S. Singh Jan 2019

In The Company Of Citizens: The Rhetorical Contours Of Singapore's Neoliberalism, Rohini S. Singh

All Faculty Articles

This essay explores how the language and priorities of the corporate world seep into the halls of government, and the ensuing implications of such rhetoric. Situating my analysis in Singapore's National Day Rally addresses from 1960 to 2018, I uncover two rhetorical signatures unique to Singaporean neoliberalism: the location of national character in economic performance, and the act of packaging and selling the nation to its people. I conclude by examining the implications of a corporate constitution of the nation for evoking affective ties to the nation, and by considering the value of Singapore's case to broader critiques of neoliberalism.
