Symbiosis In Digital Performance: The Relationship Between Interactive Technologies And Improvisational Choreography, Tessa Rixon Dec 2019

Symbiosis In Digital Performance: The Relationship Between Interactive Technologies And Improvisational Choreography, Tessa Rixon

Behind the Scenes: Journal of Theatre Production Practice

Within Australian live performance, there is a rising number of works relying on digital media technologies to shape their scenographic environments. Situated in this field of digital performance, this paper examines the relationship between two subsets of digital scenography and dance: interactive digital technologies and improvisational choreography. While there are a number of perspectives that consider the role and impact of digital technologies within this specific field, many focus on the dancer or choreographer rather than the designer/technologist. The concept of symbiosis offers an alternative framework to understand the relationship between interactive digital technologies and improvisational choreography, and has potential …

Johann Strauss Ii's Die Fledermaus: Historical Background And Conductor's Guide, Jennifer Bruton Dec 2019

Johann Strauss Ii's Die Fledermaus: Historical Background And Conductor's Guide, Jennifer Bruton

Dissertations

Students pursuing graduate degrees in conducting often have aspirations of being high school or college choir or band directors. Others want to lead orchestra programs in educational or professional settings. Sadly, many colleges and universities do not have systems in place that provide avenues for those choosing this career path. The curriculum should go beyond teaching the rudiments of baton technique. Students should receive instruction and practical experience, applying what they have learned. Lab bands and choirs are a helpful tool, but I believe opera programs provide an ideal and essential venue where conductors can not only improve and hone …

Solo Trombone With Electronic Accompaniment: An Analysis And Performance Guide For Three Recent Compositions, Joshua Mize Dec 2019

Solo Trombone With Electronic Accompaniment: An Analysis And Performance Guide For Three Recent Compositions, Joshua Mize

Dissertations

This dissertation examines three solo trombone works, each with a different electronic accompaniment–fixed media, live electronics with a computer, and live electronics with a loop station. A historical and cultural background establishes a context for each accompaniment type, followed by a brief introduction of the selected composition and its composer. Then, an analysis of the piece explores how the electronic accompaniment functions within the context of the solo. Finally, a performance guide addresses rehearsal techniques and important aspects of performing with the different electronic accompaniments. The final product is a pedagogical resource representing current literature for the trombone and electronics …

The repressed school strike in Guinea Conakry in 1961, the post-apartheid social crisis in South Africa and the 2002 civil war in Côte d'Ivoire are major events in African history that drew Maryse Condé's attention as illustrated through Heremakhonon (1976), Histoire de la femme cannibale (2003), En attendant la montée des eaux (2010). This article analyzes, beyond the modes of representation of events, the critical discourses that emerged from social fictions in examining murderous ideologies, the overflow of political, racial, ethnic identities as well as the obsessions of power that are at the origin of imagined conflicts. It explores how …

Maryse Condé's plays reveal both a scriptural and thematic dynamism. This movement manifests a commitment that renews itself through the dramatization of varied sociopolitical current events. The first plays of the Guadeloupean showcase slavery, colonization and Independence. The problematic of the future of Black peoples flowing from them resounds differently in her recent works. Maryse Condé complexifies it indeed and updates it constantly. This makes her an unconventional author, for her writing takes roots in negritude, partakes in post-negritude and proceeds equally from a dramaturgy of uprootedness.

Physical Activity Patterns Among Undergraduate Colleges At The University Of Texas At Arlington, Jeanne Bandalaria Dec 2019

Physical Activity Patterns Among Undergraduate Colleges At The University Of Texas At Arlington, Jeanne Bandalaria

2019 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The correlation between undergraduate majors/colleges and their corresponding levels of physical activity was investigated at the University of Texas at Arlington. The relationship between the two subjects of research was determined by the method of a survey, as inspired by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The IPAQ serves to analyze data through a series of questions that determine an individual’s weekly average of vigorous to moderate exercise based on their job, major, leisure activity, and time spent sedentary. Pie charts and tables are presented to depict the survey’s findings of undergraduate major, college, and times of physical and sedentary …

Creative Authors And Their Messages: A Collection Of Criticisms, Vicki Taylor Dec 2019

Creative Authors And Their Messages: A Collection Of Criticisms, Vicki Taylor

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

Oppression is evident m every society: from the beginning of time, First in England and then America, the defilement of people based on race, gender, and birthplace found its way from the streets of the country to the pages of many works of literature. These core issues in the plot of narrative gave rise to literary criticism. The fragile psyche of immigrants is outlined in Charles Brockden Browns Edgar Huntly, the defilement of women is greatly shown through the writing of Edna's search for identity in Kate Chopin's The Awakening, and the lingering effects of slavery are recorded in the …

My Palate Hung With Starlight: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Seamus Heaney’S Poetry, Anke Klitzing Dec 2019

My Palate Hung With Starlight: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Seamus Heaney’S Poetry, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Nobel-prize winning poet Seamus Heaney is celebrated for his rich verses recalling his home in the Northern Irish countryside of County Derry. Yet while the imaginative links to nature in his poetry have already been critically explored, little attention has been paid so far to his rendering of local food and foodways. From ploughing, digging potatoes and butter-churning to picking blackberries, Heaney sketches not only the everyday activities of mid-20th century rural Ireland, but also the social dynamics of community and identity and the socio-cultural symbiosis embedded in those practices. Larger questions of love, life and death also infiltrate the …
