Katipunan

Recent Research To Build Knowledge Of The Child Welfare Workforce, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development Dec 2019

Recent Research To Build Knowledge Of The Child Welfare Workforce, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Other QIC-WD Products

Child welfare worker turnover is costly and can negatively affect the relationship between families and the child welfare agency. The Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) aims to build the body of evidence in the child welfare field to better understand worker turnover and strategies to address it. Although turnover is a widely acknowledged problem, there has not been reliable data to calculate staff turnover, caseloads, and workforce capacity. A recent study and article, Characteristics of the Front-line Child Welfare Workforce (Edwards & Wildeman, 2018), makes available a new data source and provides an analysis of workforce data from …

Editorial Introduction: Re-Envisioning Education In A Globalizing World, Hiro Saito Dec 2019

Editorial Introduction: Re-Envisioning Education In A Globalizing World, Hiro Saito

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This special issue focuses on education as a crucial factor mediating the relationship between youth and globalization. Specifically, four papers collectively explore how education can be re-envisioned from the following vantage point: the use of technology to foreground the fundamentally interconnected nature of today’s world; the help of mindfulness to deepen the awareness of such interconnectedness and cultivate acommitment to collective well-being; the role of activism to produce more critical knowledge and transformational solidarity for social justice on a global scale; at the same time, the necessity of reflexivity to examine one’s own ontological and epistemological assumptions before attempting any …

The Performing Female Body: The National Theatre Frankenstein As Performance Art, Hannah Mahrii Gunson Dec 2019

The Performing Female Body: The National Theatre Frankenstein As Performance Art, Hannah Mahrii Gunson

Theses and Dissertations

The National Theatre's Frankenstein is not the first time Shelley's novel has been adapted for the stage, but it is the first time a stage adaptation has returned the popular story to its source material's feminist themes. Departing from the iterations that portrayed Victor Frankenstein as a Byronic hero, Nick Dear's adaptation has re-designed Frankenstein to be misogynistic and calloused. His new nature is best observed in the scene wherein Frankenstein presents the Woman-Creature he's built for his first Creature. She is naked, silent, submissive, and viciously dismembered at the end of the scene. While such submissiveness might justifiably be …

Democracy And Deference: Or, Why Democracy Needs People Who Know How To Shut Up And Listen, Michael Blake Dec 2019

Democracy And Deference: Or, Why Democracy Needs People Who Know How To Shut Up And Listen, Michael Blake

San Diego Law Review

The charge for this conference asked us to consider the future of liberal democracy given the challenges it presently faces. Two challenges in particular give me pause:

First, the issues that are most in need of governance are now happening at the transnational level. We face the possibility of an altered climate due to increased carbon emissions; increased political turbulence due to increased migration flows, including a resurgence of refugees and, of course, increased resistance to refugee admissions; and increasingly complex international processes for both the production of goods and the movement of capital. None of these issues can be …

Human Milk Omega-3 Fatty Acid Composition Is Associated With Infant Temperament, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, Adi Fish, Laura M. Glynn Dec 2019

Human Milk Omega-3 Fatty Acid Composition Is Associated With Infant Temperament, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, Adi Fish, Laura M. Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

There is growing evidence that omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty-acids (PUFAs) are important for the brain development in childhood and are necessary for an optimal health in adults. However, there have been no studies examining how the n-3 PUFA composition of human milk influences infant behavior or temperament. To fill this knowledge gap, 52 breastfeeding mothers provided milk samples at 3 months postpartum and completed the Infant Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ-R), a widely used parent-report measure of infant temperament. Milk was assessed for n-3 PUFAs and omega-6 (n-6) PUFAs using gas-liquid chromatography. The total fat and the ratio of n6/n-3 fatty acids …

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Through an interactive presentation the audience will be able to engage in games and activities to take to their classrooms. One example is the “Green Paper” strategy which supports positive behavior in the classroom. This strategy prevented inappropriate behavior in class by focusing on clear and consistent positive expectations through self-correction. This strategy allows the teacher to have two conferences with the students and apply one action plan involving parents to support appropriate behavior in the classroom and at home. It helps the teacher to meet the students where they are and to provide individual supports to help students self-correct. …

The impact of an educator cannot be dismissed especially when we consider that they are entrusted with a very difficult responsibility of cultivating productive and knowledgeable citizens. With the pressures of academic and behavior achievement surmounting, what can schools do to support their teachers who are entrusted with our future leaders? Coastal Academy GNETS will present a framework that is analogous to the Drowning Chain of Survival for Lifeguards to meet this growing need. Participants will gain an awareness …

Re-Engage Students With “Check And Connect”, Tara Davis, Tony Feldmann Dec 2019

Re-Engage Students With “Check And Connect”, Tara Davis, Tony Feldmann

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

One of the most effective dropout prevention programs is Check & Connect. Check and Connect is for K-12 students that show signs of disengagement with school and who are at risk of dropping out. The foundation of Check & Connect (C&C) is building a trusting relationship between the student and a caring mentor. A mentor builds a strong relationship with students, systematically “Checks” on students, “Connects” with students, and partners with parents/families, functioning as a liaison between home and school and striving to build constructive family-school relationships.

Check & Connect is empirically supported through rigorous research and has shown to …

Creative Escapism And The Camino De Santiago, Berenika Seryczyńska Dec 2019

Creative Escapism And The Camino De Santiago, Berenika Seryczyńska

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The phenomenon of escapism, extensively analyed in the key mechanism of escape into the world of illusion and imagination in numerous sociological and psychological studies, has not yet been researched from a theological perspective or described in the context of pilgrimage. Nevertheless, the existing studies encourage this type of reflection, indicating that escapism seems to be one of the ways to solve social problems by turning towards religiousness. This is the case for pilgrims on their journey to the tomb of St. James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela. The studies of pilgrims reveal the escapist motivations behind the decision …

Sacred And Space In Post-Secular Pilgrimage: The Camino De Santiago And Relational Model Of The Sacred, Piotr Roszak Dec 2019

Sacred And Space In Post-Secular Pilgrimage: The Camino De Santiago And Relational Model Of The Sacred, Piotr Roszak

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The aim of this paper is to shed light on the changes in perceiving the sacred which have appeared in the history of pilgrimage. These are linked with different theological approaches to space and subsequent periods of desacralisation, secularization and re-sacralisation. Relying on a modern theology of pilgrimage and research into the philosophy of religion by M. Eliade the paper offers a new interpretation of the message of the Camino de Santiago which overcomes previous reductionisms based on seeing the sacred solely in the destination (the shrine). The relationship with the Camino and the content of pilgrim blessings indicate the …

Pilgrims’ Play On The Santiago Way, Daniel Moulin-Stożek Dec 2019

Pilgrims’ Play On The Santiago Way, Daniel Moulin-Stożek

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The popularity of the walking pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela across Northern Spain is often understood as a new kind of spiritual tourism rather than a revival of religious practice. In order to examine this claim, I explore common symbolic and ritual practices on the trail such as rock placing, message making, role playing, and partaking in communal play activities. I elaborate the concept of play to explain these behaviors and consider how they relate to transcendental and sacred meanings. This analysis has important implications for explaining the current popularity of the Camino. In particular, it helps explain how the …

Religious Tourism Vs. Sacred Space Experience: Conflict Or Complementary Interaction?, Tomasz Duda, Dariusz Doburzyński Dec 2019

Religious Tourism Vs. Sacred Space Experience: Conflict Or Complementary Interaction?, Tomasz Duda, Dariusz Doburzyński

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Contemporary religious tourism, which in many cases is incorrectly identified with the phenomenon of pilgrimage, has developed in recent years as a separate form of migration and activity in the tourism space. However, in the literature of the subject, there is a large variety of problem perspectives, depending on the viewpoint chosen by the given author and the scientific discipline that he/she represents. The most frequently occurring problem is the terminological ambiguity regarding the concepts of ‘religious tourism’ and ‘pilgrimage’. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the diversity of understanding of the sacred space presented by …

Overall, the research on the effect of pets on reducing depression indicated that living with pets has no effect.
