A novel propitious nano-patterned brass oxide nanowires were fabricated via controlled anodization of α-brass in aqueous electrolytes at room temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)techniques were used to investigate the morphology, structure, and composition of the fabricated materials. The morphology of the resulted structures was found to depend on the concentration of the sodium bicarbonate used for anodization as well as the post treatment. The XRD analysis confirmed the existence of both ZnO and CuO. The XPS results suggest the formation of CuZnO nanowires. The fabricated nanowires showed exceptional optical activity …

Faculty Journal Articles

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite compounds are currently the archetypal materials for high performance photovoltaic (PV) and optoelectronic devices. However, the remaining bottlenecks preventing their large-scale production are their environmental/thermal instability and lead toxicity. Herein, we demonstrate a novel approach to synthesize single-phase electrospun Cs2SnIxCl6-x double perovskites with varying halide content (I, Cl, or mixed I/Cl) as active materials for potential application in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy analyses indicated the in situ formation of graphene oxide (GO) during the annealing process. The GO layer was found to enhance the optical properties and thermal stability of …

Experimental And Density Functional Theory Insights Into The Effect Of Withdrawing Ligands On The Fluorescence Yield Of Ru (Ii)-Based Complexes, Basant A. Ali, Nageh Khalaf Allam

Faculty Journal Articles

The quality of emission spectra of metal complexes gives good insights into their performance in many optoelectronic applications. Herein, the effect of the number and position of various ligand structures on the emission spectra of Ru bipyridine complexes was studied. Specifically, the use of a different number of withdrawing groups (COOH) was investigated in detail. The complexes were first investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations and then confirmed experimentally. The bandgap energy, reactivity, emission spectra and Stokes shift were found to depend on the number and position of the withdrawing groups attached to the Ru(bpy)22+ complexes. …

Affective Misattribution Following Memory Decisions Does Not Transfer To Interleaved Items, David Grybinas Dec 2019

Affective Misattribution Following Memory Decisions Does Not Transfer To Interleaved Items, David Grybinas

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The outcomes of memory search appear to have affective consequences. For instance, during recognition memory tests, concluding that a retrieval probe is from a prior study period (‘old’) leads to higher pleasantness ratings for the probe than concluding it is novel (‘new”). Grybinas, Kantner, and Dobbins (2019) explained this and related findings via a Confirmation of Search (COS) hypothesis that assumes that the affective consequences of successful versus failed episodic retrieval are misattributed to probes used to elicit memory search. While these affective misattributions clearly occur for the memory probes themselves (within-item misattribution), social psychological research has previously shown that …

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

One quarter of veterans returning from the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War have developed Gulf War Illness (GWI) with chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Exertion leads to characteristic, delayed onset exacerbations that are not relieved by sleep. We have modeled exertional exhaustion by comparing magnetic resonance images from before and after submaximal exercise. One third of the 27 GWI participants had brain stem atrophy and developed postural tachycardia after exercise (START: Stress Test Activated Reversible Tachycardia). The remainder activated basal ganglia and anterior insulae during a cognitive task (STOPP: Stress Test Originated Phantom Perception). Here, the role of attention …

Impact Of Stirrer Speed And Media Type-Loading On The Breakage Kinetics During Wet Stirred Media Milling Of Griseofulvin, Nathaniel Parker

Theses

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of stirrer speed (2000-4000 rpm) and bead loading (~20-60%) on the breakage kinetics-energy consumption during milling of griseofulvin, a poorly soluble drug, and compare the performance of crosslinked polystyrene (CPS) beads with that of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) beads. Laser diffraction, SEM, viscometry, and XRPD were used for characterization. A microhydrodynamic model was used to interpret the breakage kinetics. An increase in stirrer speed led to faster breakage due to more frequent and forceful CPS bead-bead collisions. Despite causing slight decrease in maximum contact pressure, an increase in CPS bead loading …
