Developmental Transcriptomic Analysis Of The Cave-Dwelling Crustacean, Asellus Aquaticus, Joshua B. Gross, Dennis A. Sun, Brian M. Carlson, Sivan Brodo-Abo, Meredith E. Protas

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Cave animals are a fascinating group of species often demonstrating characteristics including reduced eyes and pigmentation, metabolic efficiency, and enhanced sensory systems. Asellus aquaticus, an isopod crustacean, is an emerging model for cave biology. Cave and surface forms of this species differ in many characteristics, including eye size, pigmentation, and antennal length. Existing resources for this species include a linkage map, mapped regions responsible for eye and pigmentation traits, sequenced adult transcriptomes, and comparative embryological descriptions of the surface and cave forms. Our ultimate goal is to identify genes and mutations responsible for the differences between the cave and …

Does The Seedling Emergence Technique Limit The Detection Of Seeds Of Miombo Species In Miombo Woodlands?, Halima M. Amir, Mkabwa L. K Manoko

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Seedling emergence technique frequently used in soil seed bank studies indicates that seeds of Miombo species are not present in the soil seed bank. Does this method limit the detection of seeds of Miombo species in the soil seed bank? This question has not been investigated systematically. The present study aims to find out whether the seedling emergency method limits the detection of seeds of Miombo species in the soil seed bank of Miombo woodlands. In the investigation, seedling emergence and extraction methods were used to estimate soil seed bank in Miombo woodlands. Data were obtained from 50 circular plots …

Disaster Resilience As Communication Practice: Remembering And Forgetting Lessons From Past Disasters Through Practices That Prepare For The Next One, Rebecca M. Rice, Jody L. S. Jahn Dec 2019

Disaster Resilience As Communication Practice: Remembering And Forgetting Lessons From Past Disasters Through Practices That Prepare For The Next One, Rebecca M. Rice, Jody L. S. Jahn

Communication Studies Faculty Research

Communities learn important lessons about their vulnerabilities from disasters. A crucial aspect of resilience is how communities apply past lessons to prepare for future events. We use a practice lens to examine how communities remember and forget lessons through everyday communication surrounding their preparedness activities. We analyze two cases of disaster preparedness in one community. The first site, a local Office of Emergency Management, adapted national policies to the community while also keeping local disaster lessons in mind (i.e. remembering lessons). The second site represented an intractable conflict between the U.S. Forest Service and a community group that inhibited the …

The status of women’s health has a direct influence on their decision-making regarding their healthcare. This study analyses the determinants of women’s autonomy in decision making regarding their own healthcare in Tanzania. The study uses data from the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey, and the Malaria Indicator Survey (TDHS-MIS) conducted in 2015/2016. The focus of the analysis is on married women within an age range of 15 49 years. Cross-tabulation and logistic regression model were used to examine the association between women’s demographic characteristics—such as age, education level, place of residence, marital status, wealth index, and literacy level—and their autonomy …

Chemical Composition And Behavioural Responses Of Male And Female Bactrocera Dorsalis To Their Volatile Emissions, Fikira Kimbokota Dec 2019

Chemical Composition And Behavioural Responses Of Male And Female Bactrocera Dorsalis To Their Volatile Emissions, Fikira Kimbokota

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Bactrocera dorsalis, (Tephritidae) presented a grave threat to a broad range of fruit and vegetables in the tropics, including Tanzania. Bactrocera dorsalis is among the most destructive tephritid fruit fly, causing devastating loss of fruits especially mango. Insects use olfactory cues to locate hosts, oviposition sites and mating, in which pheromones are believed to be a strong cue used by insect to locate their mates. However, due to their high ability to adapt and occupy different ecological niches into various agroecological zones, there is a need to evaluate pheromonal composition from time to time to improve their control strategies. Therefore, …

Analysis Of Newspaper Headlines: A Case Of Two Tanzanian English Dailies, Erasmus Akiley Msuya

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The current study analyses newspaper headlines in respect to three categories: international, local, and business news (irrespective of the geographical scope) of two English dailies: a government-owned Daily News, and a privately-owned The Guardian. The study sought to analyse newspaper headlines guided by semantic under-determinacy, an important theoretical framework in accounting for a balance between linguistic economy that characterises newspaper headlines and communicative precision. The data were collected via documentary review. The headlines were analysed under three categories: local, international, and business news that included local and international spectrums. A total of 2004 headlines were randomly selected for analysis: 1088 …

Psychoanalytic Interpretation Of Marina’S Character In Kyomuhendo’S Secrets No More, Esther J. Masele, Deogratias M. Kisweka Dec 2019

Psychoanalytic Interpretation Of Marina’S Character In Kyomuhendo’S Secrets No More, Esther J. Masele, Deogratias M. Kisweka

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Based on the assumption that characters in a literary text are true representations of human beings, this paper intends to interpret Kyomuhendo’s characterization of Marina in Secrets No More, applying psychoanalytic theory thereby, authenticating Freud’s concept of personality in the understanding of characters’ deeds in the novel. Taking into consideration that Freud’s psychoanalysis is a wide and complex theory, this paper focuses on the basics of ‘Id’, ‘Ego’ and ‘Super-ego’ as modes of interpretation to evaluate the effectiveness of the theory in providing a deeper understanding of a character’s personality and meaningful interpretation of a text. In the same context, …

Emotional Intelligence And Knowledge Management: A Necessary Link?, Isabel Rechberg Dec 2019

Emotional Intelligence And Knowledge Management: A Necessary Link?, Isabel Rechberg

Publications and Research

This theoretical paper studies the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) on individuals' participation in knowledge management (KM) practices. Individuals are the sources of knowledge, and EI may advance individuals' self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship-management skills, which in turn positively impacts their knowledge processing behavior. The argument is made that knowledge creation is enabled through individuals' ability to recognize and correctly interpret emotional and environmental clues. Knowledge sharing is facilitated through individuals' interpersonal, communication, and team-working skills, enabled through self-awareness and social awareness. Knowledge is retained in organizations where EI enacts individuals' corporate citizenship behavior, adaptability, and job satisfaction. Where …

Help-Seeking From A Counsellor Or Psychotherapist: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Irish Adults, Damien Cassells

Articles

The factors that contribute towards an individual seeking help from a counsellor or psychotherapist for a mental, nervous or emotional problem are explored in this study. A multivariate logistic regression is applied to analyse data from the 2006 National Psychological Wellbeing and Distress Survey. Individuals living in rural areas and in towns with populations of between 5,000 and 10,000 people are found to be less likely to seek counselling, relative to individuals living in Dublin City. Respondents earning the lowest income were less likely to enter therapy compared with respondents earning the highest, while having private health insurance increased the …

I Don’T Know How To Talk About These Wor(L)Ds, But I Do Walk, I Shoot, And I Write: Autoethnographic Written And Visual Cures For A Fragmented Identity, Ursula-Helen Kassaveti Dec 2019

I Don’T Know How To Talk About These Wor(L)Ds, But I Do Walk, I Shoot, And I Write: Autoethnographic Written And Visual Cures For A Fragmented Identity, Ursula-Helen Kassaveti

The Qualitative Report

In this article, I examine how my unprogrammatized and spontaneous informal fieldwork in Athens, undertaken in a rather unconsciously autoethnographic vein, has helped me while on the process of investigating my personal identity. My temporary change of academic direction and my delving into the ocean of fieldwork have shaped and answered my endless quest for important answers about a researcher’s own self. Through the use of written text, photography and other visual indexes, “thin” and “thick” description, I argue that autoethnography as a method could be a healing process, providing therapy for a researcher’s “fragmented” heart and identity.

Legumes--A High Quality Protein Source In Latvian Animal Feeds, Baiba Osmane, Imants Jansons, Aleksandrs Jemeljanovs, Sallija Cerina, Liga Proskina

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Farms in Latvia have an insufficient amount of protein in a feed for herbivorous animals. To tackle this issue, plants containing high protein content should be cultivated in grass mixtures. Legumes are rich in protein and play an important role on farms with dairy livestock. It is advisable to have at least 30-50% of legumes in mixtures with grass for grazing animals and to conserve fodder for the winter period, which lasts from November to May. As well as being rich in protein, legumes have a high dry matter digestibility (TDN) and high energy content (NEL). While legumes during the …

Approaches Toward Sustainable Forage-Livestock Systems: Strip-Planting A Legume Into A Warm-Season Perennial Grass Pasture, Miguel S. Castillo, Lynn E. Sollenberger, Ann R. Blount, Jason A. Ferrell, Mary J. Williams, Cheryl L. Mackowiak Dec 2019

Approaches Toward Sustainable Forage-Livestock Systems: Strip-Planting A Legume Into A Warm-Season Perennial Grass Pasture, Miguel S. Castillo, Lynn E. Sollenberger, Ann R. Blount, Jason A. Ferrell, Mary J. Williams, Cheryl L. Mackowiak

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Despite the demonstrated potential of rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.; RP) for grazing in the southeastern USA (Ortega-S. et al. 1992), high establishment cost and removal of land from production during establishment have limited its use to primarily hay production systems. The premise of this experiment is that strip-planting RP in existing bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) pastures offers the opportunity to use grass forage during the legume establishment phase so that land need not be totally removed from grazing, while allowing successful establishment of the legume.

Meat And Milk Production On Irrigated Birdsfoot Trefoil Pastures In The Mountain West Usa, Jennifer W. Macadam, Sara R. Hunt, Silvana Martini, Rachael Christensen, Jong-Su Eun Dec 2019

Meat And Milk Production On Irrigated Birdsfoot Trefoil Pastures In The Mountain West Usa, Jennifer W. Macadam, Sara R. Hunt, Silvana Martini, Rachael Christensen, Jong-Su Eun

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Irrigated birdsfoot trefoil (BFT; Lotus corniculatus L.) is a productive, persistent perennial legume in the Mountain West region of the United States of America (USA) (MacAdam and Griggs 2006). It does not cause bloat, even when grazed in pure stands, because it contains a relatively small amount (2-4% of dry matter (DM)) of condensed tannins (Mueller-Harvey 2006; Waghorn 2008). Birdsfoot trefoil tannins bind excess plant proteins at rumen pH (~ pH 6.2) sufficiently to prevent bloat and then release these proteins into the abomasum at gastric pH (~ pH 2.5). This allows plant proteins to be digested to amino acids …

A Comparison Between Simulated Grazing, 2-Cut And 3-Cut Silage Management On The Performance Of Lolium Perenne L., Mary Mcevoy, Emer Kennedy, Michael O’Donovan Dec 2019

A Comparison Between Simulated Grazing, 2-Cut And 3-Cut Silage Management On The Performance Of Lolium Perenne L., Mary Mcevoy, Emer Kennedy, Michael O’Donovan

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Internationally, the majority of grass cultivar evaluation protocols test the performance of cultivars under cutting managements with little or no exposure to animal stresses such as treading and plant pulling. In addition, the majority of these protocols test cultivars under 2 or 3 cut silage systems. Gilliland and Mann (2000) reported a difference in cultivar ranking between years and also between management systems when a severe (simulated grazing to 3 cm height) or lax (6 cm height) defoliation was applied to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars in plot trials. Internationally, many evaluation protocols use only one management system …

Native Shrubs For Grazing In The Dry, Semi-Arid Sand Dunes Of The Mallee Region Of Victoria, Australia, Dave Monks Dec 2019

Native Shrubs For Grazing In The Dry, Semi-Arid Sand Dunes Of The Mallee Region Of Victoria, Australia, Dave Monks

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Native shrubs have potential for growth and grazing in dry areas where alternative perennial pasture options are limited. Deep-rooted perennials have also been shown to reduce groundwater recharge and salinity to improve ecological stability. A forage shrub evaluation experiment was established at the Walpeup Research Station in the Mallee region of Victoria, Australia to compare the performance of a range of native species. The work was conducted as part of the Enrich project with the Future Farm Industries Cooperative Research Centre.

Establishment Techniques To Increase The Production Of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum) Over-Sown Into An Irrigated Kikuyu (Pennisetum Clandestinum) Pasture, Joseph C. Fitzgerald, Mark N. Callow Dec 2019

Establishment Techniques To Increase The Production Of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum) Over-Sown Into An Irrigated Kikuyu (Pennisetum Clandestinum) Pasture, Joseph C. Fitzgerald, Mark N. Callow

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Irrigated mixed pastures of kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) over-sown with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) in the cool-season (May-October) can produce large amounts of biomass in a sub-tropical environment (Botha et al. 2008). However, appropriate pasture management practices are required to suppress the aggressive growth of kikuyu prior to autumn, in order to facilitate establishment of ryegrass seedlings.

The present study evaluated ryegrass establishment techniques on the dry matter (DM) production, botanical composition and forage quality of a mixed sward containing kikuyu.

Trifolium Vesiculosum: Exploring Its Potential In The Uruguay Lowlands Rice Region, Walter Ayala, Ethel Barrios, Gerónimo Cardozo Dec 2019

Trifolium Vesiculosum: Exploring Its Potential In The Uruguay Lowlands Rice Region, Walter Ayala, Ethel Barrios, Gerónimo Cardozo

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Trifolium vesiculosum, commonly known as arrowleaf clover, is a winter-growing annual legume native to Europe (Duke, 1981), with high persistence and low risk of bloat. Several reports show a wide annual production range between 1.9 and 9.8 t DM/ha/year (Gomes and Reis 1999; Evans and Mills 2008). It shows a high nutritional value (Tekeli et al. 2005) that declines with increasing maturity. Grazing management should consider the need for seed production to ensure natural re-seeding in subsequent years. Recently, INIA Uruguay released the T. vesiculosum cultivar Sagit (Glencoe EC1), characterized by intermediate growth habit and flowering period.
