Margulis Revisited: Once More On Program Notes And Audience Enjoyment, Jocelyn Abrahamzon
Margulis Revisited: Once More On Program Notes And Audience Enjoyment, Jocelyn Abrahamzon
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
In a 2010 study, Elizabeth Margulis finds that audience members enjoy classical music less when they read information about the piece before they hear it. Her result is surprising because conventional wisdom suggests that such pre-concert information would add to an audience members’ enjoyment of a concert. To gain further perspective, I decided to conduct a similar study on JMU’s campus that differed from Margulis’ in many ways. For example, participants attended a live concert rather than listening to excerpts of music through headphones. I created a survey that asked participants questions about their experience at a concert they attended …
Traditional Irish Musical Elements In The Solo-Piano Music Of Ryan Molloy, Brian Thomas Murphy
Traditional Irish Musical Elements In The Solo-Piano Music Of Ryan Molloy, Brian Thomas Murphy
Dissertations
Music in Ireland has become increasingly popular in recent decades. There is no shortage of Irish musical groups, recordings, and live performances featuring Irish music both in Ireland and abroad. Contemporary art music in Ireland has also seen an increase in support and notoriety. Irish composers face a decision of how, if at all, to engage with traditional folk music that is so prominent in their culture. Ryan Molloy (b. 1983 in Pomeroy, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland) is a composer and performer who incorporates elements of traditional Irish music in the context and in the language of modern art music. …
Faculty Format Preferences In The Performing Arts: A Multi-Institutional Study, Joe C. Clark, Jonathan Sauceda, Sheridan Stormes
Faculty Format Preferences In The Performing Arts: A Multi-Institutional Study, Joe C. Clark, Jonathan Sauceda, Sheridan Stormes
Scholarship and Professional Work
Resources for teaching in higher education have undergone a tremendous evolution during the past several decades. The Internet and commercial services, such as YouTube and Google, have revolutionized the manner by which students and faculty access information to both conduct research and meet course requirements. This mixed methods study implemented an online survey and interviews to determine how performing arts faculty at three institutions integrate library resources and services into their teaching. Conclusions indicate that, while personal collections and Internet resources provide a majority of teaching content, the academic library still offers important access to materials for instruction.
Death Ends A Life Not A Relationship: The Embodied Mourning And Memorializing Of Pets Through Material Culture, Gemma N. Koontz
Death Ends A Life Not A Relationship: The Embodied Mourning And Memorializing Of Pets Through Material Culture, Gemma N. Koontz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many individuals develop strong bonds with their pets, viewing them as close “furry” friends or family. When these beloved companions die, both their relational and physical absences are deeply felt. Lacking socially recognized rituals to mourn and memorialize their pets, owners turn to and adapt traditional “human practices,” primarily that of keeping meaningful or significant items of the deceased.
Using both personal experiences and perspectives from multiple fields, this thesis discusses the life-cycle of the human-animal bond, examines the types of items owners keep or create, and how these are used to facilitate both mourning (the outward expression of grief) …
The Influence Of Film Music On Emotion, Alyssa D'Artenay
The Influence Of Film Music On Emotion, Alyssa D'Artenay
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This paper examines the use of music as a narrative device to influence an audience’s emotions and response in the context of film and visual media as well as its use as a tool to impart psychological transportation and assist the visual narrative. By identifying the contributions of music as a whole, I evaluate and describe its functions, roles and relationship with the audience through the medium of film. Using information collected from published reports, articles and books, I provide a thorough analysis of the varying methods and approaches used and the roles music plays in affecting the emotional response …
They Never Stopped Rockin': A Brief History Of The Chitlin' Circuit, Mississippi, And Their Effects On America's Music, Warren Beebe
They Never Stopped Rockin': A Brief History Of The Chitlin' Circuit, Mississippi, And Their Effects On America's Music, Warren Beebe
Honors Theses
This work focuses on the development of one of America's first musical tour routes: the Chitlin' Circuit. While its name may sound strange, the Chitlin' Circuit was responsible for the development of numerous distinct musical genres throughout the United States, such as blues and rock and roll in the twentieth century. Southern roadhouses, dive bars, and juke joints proudly showcased performers that gained initial fame touring with old medicine shows. As these artists gained recognition for their new musical stylings and elaborate showmanship, the owners of these local nightspots began to exchange contact information to better capitalize on these highly …

Music, Dance, And Tourism In Los Cabos, Mexico, Melanie E. Davis
Music, Dance, And Tourism In Los Cabos, Mexico, Melanie E. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
For a thriving music and dance scene to flourish in tourist destinations, certain factors for performers must be present including economic stability, a baseline level of patronage, resilience to seasonal tourist fluctuations, and adaptation to demographic changes over time. In the Los Cabos arts community, local aesthetics are transformed and embodied by work of performers whose activities are multicultural and multilingual. Over the past fifty years, Los Cabos was transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a major international destination. The island-inspired arts scene includes live performances featuring cultural representations from other lands besides Mexico. Grounded in the humanities, I …
North Of Ourselves: Identity And Place In Jim Wayne Miller’S Poetry, Micah Mccrotty
North Of Ourselves: Identity And Place In Jim Wayne Miller’S Poetry, Micah Mccrotty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Jim Wayne Miller’s poetry examines how human history and topography join to create place. His work often incorporates images of land and ecology; it deliberately questions the delineation between place and self. This thesis explores how Miller presents images of water to describe the relationship between inhabitants and their location, both with the positive image of the spring and the negative image of the flood. Additionally, this thesis examines how the Brier, Miller’s most prominent persona character, grieves his separation from home and ultimately finds healing and reunification of the self through his return to the hills. In his poetry, …
A Case Study Of The Culturally Diverse Worship At The Florida Hospital Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Richard Edwin Hickam
A Case Study Of The Culturally Diverse Worship At The Florida Hospital Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Richard Edwin Hickam
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Florida Hospital Seventh-day Adventist Church (FHC) is a multicultural, multigenerational church in Orlando, FL. This case study will examine the history of the worshiping community with particular attention to the change in the culture of the worship services enacted in 2014 and its ongoing impact. The church moved from a traditional and a contemporary service to two identical culturally conscious worship services. This format is unusual in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) denomination. Seventh-day Adventism was named in a Pew study as the most diverse religion in the United States, but that does not mean its people are racially worshiping …
Creating A Cultural Context For Dong And Miao Folk Music Using An Orff-Inspired Methodology, Ke Guo
Creating A Cultural Context For Dong And Miao Folk Music Using An Orff-Inspired Methodology, Ke Guo
Master's Theses
As children grow up surrounded by various ethnicities, races, and religious beliefs, we teach them music and dance to cultivate respect and empathy for the diverse people in our multicultural society. On the other side of the globe, China is also a multi-ethnic country and is home to 56 ethnic minority groups that speak multiple different languages. “Chinese music” is thus a collective term for the many disparate styles and genres of music in the country, which is especially rich in the varieties of folk music heard and played. Although Chinese folk music frequently appears in music textbooks in elementary …
Missa Arirang: A Fusion Of Korean And Western Music, Imgyu Kang
Missa Arirang: A Fusion Of Korean And Western Music, Imgyu Kang
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
This article examines Korean nationalism in Cool-Jae Huh’s Missa Arirang; this sense of nationalism is an extension of a movement that began in the late 19th century. Missa Arirang utilizes elements from Arirang, a popular Korean folk song, in the context of a Missa, or Mass; the work consequently follows the typical structure of a Mass Ordinary. The first movement, Kyrie, morphs from Western to contemporary Korean style using predominantly Western techniques. The Gloria, which follows, symbolically brings peace between two feuding provinces by blending together their respective Arirang traditions, and the Credo continues to allude to provinces …

Sustaining Sampradaya: Carnatic Music, Pedagogy, And Devotion At The Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, Rachel Schuck
Sustaining Sampradaya: Carnatic Music, Pedagogy, And Devotion At The Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, Rachel Schuck
Open Access Theses
Every year in Cleveland, Ohio, members of the South Indian community participate in the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, the largest event of its kind outside of India. This event features the performance of classical South Indian Carnatic music, and is hosted in honor of Saint Thyagaraja, a renowned nineteenth-century composer of Carnatic songs. As a shared project of long-distance cultural nationalism, this festival brings together artists from India and students from the United States and Canada, allowing Carnatic community members to contest cultural identities in a recontextualized space outside of the homeland. In this ethnography, I expand on the existing Carnatic …

Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas
Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
There has been only limited research into the musics of Latin America as a whole, and the amount of musicological investigation decreases when referring to any specific country. This presentation will provide a glimpse into the rich and diverse musical output of Colombian composers in the twentieth century. It begins with a brief overview of Latin American society and Colombian musical influences and social structures. Important Colombian composers such as Guillermo Uribe Holguín are discussed, as well as general trends in classical composition at the time. The musical output in Colombia is astounding and at least rivals, if not surpasses, …

Praise Of Mahakala, Anthony Elia
Praise Of Mahakala, Anthony Elia
Bridwell Library Research
Praise of Mahakala is a chamber work based on the Mongolian language text of a traditional Buddhist prayer, which is scored for tenor (who will sing in Mongolian), oboe, violin, and violoncello. The work was inspired by the work of Italian scholar and sinologist Dr. F. Fiaschetti. Tempi (not indicated) may be at a pace reminiscent of the actual Mahakala chant on which the work is based.

The Singing Conductor: Interviews On The Benefits And Limitations Of Choral Conductors And Teachers Continuing To Sing, Anne Carissa Gassmann
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
It is our duty as musicians, conductors, and teachers to continue developing our teaching and musicianship. One of the ways growth can occur is by singing regularly in ensembles outside of teaching. As one balances career and personal life, continuing to sing is a choice each must make. It is through this document that one may see the relevance of pursuing opportunities to sing, as it may inform and elevate one’s teaching and conducting. Eleven interviews were conducted with elementary, high school, and collegiate teachers and conductors, only half of them still singing in an ensemble. This document is intended …
Music As A Cultural Gateway: A Short-Term Folk Music Program In Albania, Catherine Pierattini
Music As A Cultural Gateway: A Short-Term Folk Music Program In Albania, Catherine Pierattini
Capstone Collection
Folk songs have been described as a musical representation of a society’s entire culture. The field of ethnomusicology combines aspects of music and anthropology, and the study of folk music can give considerable insight into worldviews, histories, and traditions. Yet there are few study abroad program providers using this discipline as an approach to cultural analysis and exploration.
The proposed Middlebury Music Studies in Albania program would introduce diverse folk music traditions in three distinct cities, giving students the chance to learn the basics of the Albanian language, understand the historical, geographical, and social influences on the music in the …

A Study Of Stambeli In Digital Media, Nneka Mogbo
A Study Of Stambeli In Digital Media, Nneka Mogbo
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research paper explores stambeli, a traditional spiritual music in Tunisia, by understanding its musical and spiritual components then identifying ways it is presented in digital media. Stambeli is shaped by pre-Islamic West African animist beliefs, spiritual healing and trances. The genre arrived in Tunisia when sub-Saharan Africans arrived in the north through slavery, migration or trade from present-day countries like Mauritania, Mali and Chad. Today, it is a geographic and cultural intersection of sub-Saharan, North and West African influences.

Traditional Vs. Tagaq: Exploring The First Nations Relations In Canada Through Punk Inuk Throat Singer, Tanya Tagaq, Bridget S. Haines
Student Publications
This research essay will be situated within the throat singing traditions of the Inuit First Nations people of Canada. As both Paula Conlon’s entry in the Grove Music Refernce and Elaine Keillor’s book describe, Inuit throat singing began as a tradition for women and children to play as a game for when the men are away hunting. This tradition has evolved into quite a complex art form as Claude Charron describes in “Toward Transcription and Analysis of Inuit Throat-Games: Microstructure”. In 2005, Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq released her first album which began her career of a solo throat singer …
