Meteorological Information Extraction Algorithm For Ship Routing, Zhaokun Wei, Xinlian Xie, Ming Wei, Tiantian Bao Dec 2019

Meteorological Information Extraction Algorithm For Ship Routing, Zhaokun Wei, Xinlian Xie, Ming Wei, Tiantian Bao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The meteorological environment plays an important role when optimizing ship routing. Therefore, with the goal of obtaining meteorological environmental data associated with ship routing, an algorithm that can accurately obtain environmental data around a rhumb route in a standardized common data form is proposed. A Mercator projection is a type of equal-angle projection, and a rhumb route is a straight line on a Mercator chart. Consequently, the linear equation for a rhumb route can be achieved using the point-slope form. Based on this linear equation, points with a regular spacing whose degree is determined by the longitudinal size of the …

Dynamic Response Analysis Of The Lifting Load System Of A Crane Ship In Irregular Waves, Xiao-Rong Yang, Qiu-Ming Gan, Yan-Hong Wang, Guang-Dong Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, the indirect time domain method is adopted to analyze the dynamic responses of a mooring crane ship. The motion equations of its lifting load system are derived from Lagrange's equations and the features of the coupling motion between the crane ship and its lifting load system are presented. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the crane ship are calculated on the base of 3D potential flow theory. The lumped-mass model is used to analyze the dynamic features of its mooring lines. The nonlinear features of the motion equations being taken into account, the displacements of the crane ship and …

Numerical Analysis Of Deep-Water Pipeline Abandonment And Recovery, Pan Gao, Bo-Wen Jin, Ji Zeng, Yi-Ting Zhan, Hui Zhou Dec 2019

Numerical Analysis Of Deep-Water Pipeline Abandonment And Recovery, Pan Gao, Bo-Wen Jin, Ji Zeng, Yi-Ting Zhan, Hui Zhou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Pipeline abandonment and recovery (A&R) is of great importance in offshore pipeline installation. A mathematical model of the A&R process is proposed based on the large deflection beam theory. To solve the model, an iteration process is adopted. The initial guess of the solution is obtained through the two-catenary approach, which significantly accelerates the iteration. A moving boundary technique is used to solve the governing equation of the suspended pipeline. With the proposed approach, the effects of the dominant parameters in the A&R process are studied. The cable length increases, and the maximum bending moment decreases, as the vessel moves …

Effect Of Yaw Torque On Load Sharing And Dynamics Of Co-Axial Rotors, Dakshi Jindal, Davide A. Peters Dec 2019

Effect Of Yaw Torque On Load Sharing And Dynamics Of Co-Axial Rotors, Dakshi Jindal, Davide A. Peters

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

The previous load sharing method for a coaxial rotor system with an infinite number of blades is expanded for a system with a finite number of blades. In the previous methods, the load sharing case was developed only for the case where the load was evenly shared between the two rotors. However, an even distribution is not always needed and therefore a load distribution factor, f, was added to the system to accommodate for uneven load distributions. The addition of f allowed for the development of a correlation to adjust the input f to adjust the load sharing in the …

Dissertations - ALL

Undergraduate research has been considered as a high impact practice. Engaging in research in early college years are crucial to attracting and retaining students in research-related STEM careers. However, undergraduate research literature mostly focuses on the research experiences of students that are later in their undergraduate years. This dissertation is formed in an article-style format, which is a compilation of two separate research efforts to explore undergraduate students’ research experiences in their freshman and sophomore years. This article-style dissertation is part of a larger investigation into the academic and social experiences of high-achieving low-income undergraduate students. The context of the …

An In-Vitro Model To Understand Osteoblast Mediated Bone Mineralization, Vaikhari Abhay Marathe

Theses - ALL

Musculoskeletal diseases are widespread, and they affect hundreds of millions of people all around the world. Bone defects occurs due to various reasons such as surgeries, fracture and diseases. These bone defects need a surgical intervention and are generally treated with state-of-the-art grafting techniques such as natural bone grafts and implants. However, even the best available corrective treatments have several limitations such as availability, disease transfer, donor site scarcity, and immune rejection. Bone remodeling techniques which would support natural bone regeneration upon graft implantation, can be used to maximize the efficiency of current grafting techniques. In this study, our goal …

The Third Wave Of Graduate Labor Unions, Anthony Walker Dec 2019

The Third Wave Of Graduate Labor Unions, Anthony Walker

Theses - ALL

A 2016 NLRB decision that made graduate labor unions legal has contributed significantly to a wave of graduate organizing, continuing a 50-year history of graduate unions. This research investigates this contemporary wave of graduate unionization using two papers, which take a theoretical and an empirical approach respectively. The first paper uses a Marxist analysis to connect the narrow antagonism between graduates and management with larger-scale phenomena that involves other workers too, such as the growing population of contingent academic workers. It describes how corporate interests have influenced higher education and administrators have become managers of workers in order to help …

Film Review: Operation Finale, Melanie O'Brien

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

In 1960, the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, undertook an operation in Argentina to capture the architect of the Final Solution, Adolf Eichmann, and bring him to Israel to stand trial. Operation Finale [Chris Weitz, 2018] tells the story of this intelligence operation: the actions of and challenges for the agents involved, in a way that captures the banality of Eichmann’s personality before it was put on show for the world to see in his televised trial. Operation Finale is available on Netflix, rendering it a Holocaust film with an extraordinarily large reach.

Human Rights? What A Good Idea! From Universal Jurisdiction To Crime Prevention, Daniel Feierstein Dec 2019

Human Rights? What A Good Idea! From Universal Jurisdiction To Crime Prevention, Daniel Feierstein

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Over the last decades, Genocide Studies has entered in a “comfort zone.” With fellowships and support from governments or NGOs, we have developed a very comfortable environment in which the knowledge we produce about genocide prevention is neither critical nor useful. We have become trapped by assumptions we have never checked against reality and many of us have chosen to work inside the circle of those assumptions: genocide and mass violence are horrible acts committed by horrible people; we cannot stand by and do nothing; we have the responsibility to protect civilian populations and that responsibility takes the form, as …

“Genocide Is Worth It": Broadening The Logic Of Atrocity Prevention For State Actors, James E. Waller

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Of particular focus in this piece is the communication of the logic of atrocity prevention to State actors. As genocide studies has developed as a field, we also have become more insular; professionalizing how we operate in such a way that it has pulled us away from those very venues in which we should be applying our work. From the sure footing of the outside, we often criticize State actors, particularly policymakers, for their impotent actions in the face of escalating risks or, even, genocidal violence. But we seldom speak with them or push ourselves to find ways to bridge …

The First Lesson In Prevention, Alexander L. Hinton Dec 2019

The First Lesson In Prevention, Alexander L. Hinton

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Despite its rapid proliferation over the past fifteen years, genocide and atrocity crimes prevention studies are often blinded by normative assumptions and conceptual blinder. This essay argues that any effort at prevention must begin with a first critical lesson, one revealed in the essay’s opening line and writing style. This first lesson suggests a path toward a more critical prevention studies, one involving critique, archeology, and pharmakon. In addition to discussing such conceptual bases for a critical prevention studies, this essay also models how literary strategies, ranging from narrative to poetic form, may help with such a critical endeavor, opening …

Salutogenesis And The Prevention Of Social Death: Cross-Cultural Lessons From Genocide-Impacted Rwandans And Indigenous Youth In Canada, Jobb D. Arnold

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Combining trans-disciplinary theories with cross-cultural ethnographic research, this paper explores community-based approaches to genocide prevention among Canadian-Indigenous groups as well as with Rwandan student genocide survivors. A Salutogenic framework is used to examine community responses to the micro-foundations of genocide (Antonovsky 1987). These processes are explored using first-hand accounts from “New Family” networks of student genocide survivors in Rwanda and members of a Canadian urban-Indigenous “Village.” These perspectives shed light on how locally adaptive, socially networked practices can help promote emergent forms of genocide prevention (Williams 1977). This paper focuses on three areas of local practice that have helped build …

Ammonium-containing aerosols are a major component of wintertime air pollution in many densely populated regions around the world. Especially in mountain basins, the formation of persistent cold-air pools (PCAPs) can enhance particulate matter with diameters less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) to levels above air quality standards. Under these conditions, PM2.5 in the Great Salt Lake region of northern Utah has been shown to be primarily composed of ammonium nitrate; however, its formation processes and sources of its precursors are not fully understood. Hence, it is key to understanding the emission sources of its gas phase precursor, ammonia …

In recent years, the deployment of satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to production of enormous amounts of data and to novel data processing and analysis techniques for monitoring crop conditions. One overlooked data source amid these efforts, however, is incorporation of 3D information derived from multi-spectral imagery and photogrammetry algorithms into crop monitoring algorithms. Few studies and algorithms have taken advantage of 3D UAV information in monitoring and assessment of plant conditions. In this study, different aspects of UAV point cloud information for enhancing remote sensing evapotranspiration (ET) models, particularly the Two-Source Energy Balance Model (TSEB), over …

Evolution Law Of Manufacturing Paradigm And Policy Suggestions For Developing New Manufacturing, Yang Qingfeng, Ren Jinluan Dec 2019

Evolution Law Of Manufacturing Paradigm And Policy Suggestions For Developing New Manufacturing, Yang Qingfeng, Ren Jinluan

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Up to now, the manufacturing paradigm has gone through four stages:handmade, large machine production, assembly line production, and mass customization. Through historical research, this study finds five laws in the evolution of Manufacturing Paradigm, which are:value jump, incommensurability, reverse elimination, original innovation, localization and evolution. Although the transformation process of manufacturing paradigm has a long period of time, the evolution law between the old and new manufacturing paradigms still fully reflects the connotation of "manufacturing revolution". Based on the study of the Evolution Law of Manufacturing Paradigm, this study puts forward some pertinent policy suggestions for the development of new …

Sampling And Characterizing Evolving Communities In Social Networks, Humphrey Appiah Mensah Dec 2019

Sampling And Characterizing Evolving Communities In Social Networks, Humphrey Appiah Mensah

Dissertations - ALL

One of the most important structures in social networks is communities. Understanding communities is useful in many applications, such as suggesting a friend for a user in an online friendship network, recommending a product for a user in an e-commerce network, etc. However, before studying anything about communities, researchers first need to collect appropriate data. Getting complete access to the data for community studies is unrealistic in most cases. In this work, we address the problem of crawling networks to identify community structure. Firstly, we present a network sampling technique to crawl the community structure of dynamic networks when there …

Development And Application Of Nmr Diffusometry And Relaxometry Methodologies To Study Organic-Inorganic Interactions At Nanomaterial Surfaces, Emily Grace Ripka

Dissertations - ALL

Colloidal nanomaterials like semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have size-, shape-, and composition-dependent optoelectronic properties with applications ranging from photovoltaics, to sensing, to medical diagnostics and treatment. These materials also have very high surfaceto- volume ratios, with intricate surface chemistries which control nearly every aspect of their chemical, physical, and colloidal properties. The interaction of the surface with the environment is limited via capping the surface of the nanomaterials with a shell of organic capping molecules. The environment-dependent binding of this organic shell is thus an extremely important aspect of nanomaterial design, however the methodologies to probe these interactions in-situ are …

Copula-Based Multimodal Data Fusion For Inference With Dependent Observations, Shan Zhang Dec 2019

Copula-Based Multimodal Data Fusion For Inference With Dependent Observations, Shan Zhang

Dissertations - ALL

Fusing heterogeneous data from multiple modalities for inference problems has been an attractive and important topic in recent years. There are several challenges in multi-modal fusion, such as data heterogeneity and data correlation. In this dissertation, we investigate inference problems with heterogeneous modalities by taking into account nonlinear cross-modal dependence. We apply copula based methodology to characterize this dependence.

In distributed detection, the goal often is to minimize the probability of detection error at the fusion center (FC) based on a fixed number of observations collected by the sensors. We design optimal detection algorithms at the FC using a regular …

The Ethical Justification Of Increasing Awareness Of Preventive Medicine Among Healthcare Professionals, Patients And The General Public In The United States, Karishma Ether Moazzam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While practiced for centuries, preventive medicine has received increased attention during the recent times. Preventive medicine has a distinct mission to protect, promote, and maintain health as well as to prevent diseases, disabilities, and premature deaths. It aims to fulfill its mission through the combined form of clinical intervention and health promotion. In the recent years, preventive medicine has begun to lean more towards the clinical interventions, taking away from the health promotion. This imbalance has caused preventive medicine to lose its effectiveness in fulfilling its mission. One of the leading causes for such imbalance is the lack of proper …

Troubling The Water: Dismantling The Ideology Of Separate Spheres, Lisa Weddell Dec 2019

Troubling The Water: Dismantling The Ideology Of Separate Spheres, Lisa Weddell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines nineteenth century U.S. women’s maritime writings to re-evaluate and more accurately represent the roles women played in society. I contend that the nineteenth century ship is a microcosm of the United States and women’s sea experiences and maritime writings reveal their lived experiences and the visible roles they played in their relationships and in public politics. Women’s maritime writings, I argue, challenge ideologies of “True Womanhood” that define women as submissive and passive. Instead, these texts demonstrate how women equally contributed to establishing national identity in the United States by defining appropriate gender performance for men and …

Makara Journal of Science

Grass-like structured mesoporous carbon was prepared by the soft-template method using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127, affording an organic–organic composite structure between phloroglucinol and formaldehyde. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the as-synthesized mesoporous carbon is stable to 900 °C, and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the presence of carbon material structures at 2θ values of 22.020° and 42.420°. A hysteresis loop at relative partial pressures (P/Po) between 0.45 and 0.85 was observed in the N2 adsorption isotherm, indicating that the solid material exhibits mesoporous characteristics, with a homogeneous pore size distribution of 8.863 nm. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images revealed that the …

A Hybrid And Scalable Error Correction Algorithm For Indel And Substitution Errors Of Long Reads, Arghya Kusum Das, Sayan Goswami, Kisung Lee, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Long-read sequencing has shown the promises to overcome the short length limitations of second-generation sequencing by providing more complete assembly. However, the computation of the long sequencing reads is challenged by their higher error rates (e.g., 13% vs. 1%) and higher cost ($0.3 vs. $0.03 per Mbp) compared to the short reads. Methods: In this paper, we present a new hybrid error correction tool, called ParLECH (Parallel Long-read Error Correction using Hybrid methodology). The error correction algorithm of ParLECH is distributed in nature and efficiently utilizes the k-mer coverage information of high throughput Illumina short-read sequences to rectify the …

Catalytic Cracking Of Methyl Ester From Used Cooking Oil With Ni-Ion-Exchanged Zsm-5 Catalyst, Oki Alfernando, Rozie Sarip, Titin Anggraini, Nazarudin Nazarudin

Makara Journal of Science

Fossil crude reserves continue to decline, eventually leading to a reduced availability of fuel oil in Indonesia. Thus, the use of alternative plant-derived renewable energy sources, such as biodiesel should be considered. However, biodiesel as a fuel alternative has many drawbacks. In this study, biodiesel was cracked using a Ni-ZSM-5 catalyst to improve its quality. This work aimed to synthesize and characterize the Ni-ZSM-5 catalyst obtained from ion-exchange and catalytically crack methyl esters from used cooking oil. Three Ni-metal concentrations (1%, 2%, and 3%) were used for the ion-exchange of ZSM-5. Ni catalysts were then utilized for catalytic cracking at …

Optical Properties Of Toluene-Soluble Carbon Dots Prepared From Laser-Ablated Coconut Fiber, Isnaeni Isnaeni, Maria Margaretha Suliyanti, Muhandis Shiddiq, Nonny Soraya Sambudi

Makara Journal of Science

In this study, we used laser ablation to fabricate toluene-soluble carbon nanoparticles from coconut fiber. In response to excitations at various wavelengths, the fabricated carbon nanoparticles exhibit three distinctive emission peaks at wavelengths of 300 nm, 440 nm, and 540 nm. These three emission peaks correspond to the  orbital state,  orbital state, and surface state, respectively. Photoluminescence excitation measurements indicate a high probability of energy transfer between the surface state and  orbital state, whereas the  orbital state is likely independent of the other states. The results of time-resolved photoluminescence measurements indicate that electrons are likely to …
