An Integrated Flow-Curing Model For Predicting Residual Stresses In Textile Composites, Weijia Chen Dec 2019

An Integrated Flow-Curing Model For Predicting Residual Stresses In Textile Composites, Weijia Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

Fiber-reinforced composites have been widely employed in structural applications due to their high stiffness-to-weight ratio and easily-tailored mechanical properties. However, manufacturing of these lightweight materials involves an infusion and curing process, and flow-induced defects and residual stresses can easily occur, which can compromise the mechanical performance of the composite structures. The purpose of this work is to develop an integrated flow-curing processing model to accurately predict the resin flow front and the residual stresses in the Liquid Composite Molding (LCM) process. In the infusion model, the fiber fabrics are treated as a homogeneous and porous material, and the resin flow …

Copyright © 2019 American Chemical Society. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements were pursued to study human vitronectin, a protein found in tissues and the circulation that regulates cell adhesion/migration and proteolytic cascades that govern hemostasis and pericellular proteolysis. Many of these functions occur via interactions with its binding partner, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), the chief inhibitor of proteases that lyse and activate plasminogen. We focused on a region of vitronectin that remains uncharacterized from previous X-ray scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, and computational modeling approaches and which we propose is involved in binding to PAI-1. This region, which bridges the N-terminal …

Factors Behind Dissuasion To Green Products Among Young Consumers: A Qualitative Study, Anitha Acharya Dr. Dec 2019

Factors Behind Dissuasion To Green Products Among Young Consumers: A Qualitative Study, Anitha Acharya Dr.

The Qualitative Report

The current estimated market share for green consumption is less than five percent worldwide, therefore it is very important to understand the factors that stimulate non green consumption among young consumers since this can promote environmental thinking at an early age and also to increase the demand for green products. In these circumstances, emerging countries like India have contributed very less to the consumption of green products and environmental effects. India is among the fastest growing economies in the world. With the increase in population as well as in disposable income, India is expected to see a growth in green …

Global Impact Of Sown Temperate Pastures On Productivity And Ecosystem Stability–What Progress Have We Made?, E. Charles Brummer Dec 2019

Global Impact Of Sown Temperate Pastures On Productivity And Ecosystem Stability–What Progress Have We Made?, E. Charles Brummer

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Twenty years ago, in 1993, we published one of the first two alfalfa genetic linkage maps. At the time, hopes ran high that genetic marker technologies would revolutionize selection, making the development of superior cultivars both easier and faster. The objective of this paper is to critically examine forage improvement since that time and to suggest ways to more fully capitalize on those initial hopes in the future. Marker studies have been conducted around the world, identifying quantitative trait loci (QTL) for the major agronomically important traits, including biomass yield, nutritive value, disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, and others. But …

Efficient Wireless Network Scans For Computing Devices, Kai Shi, Kumar Anand Dec 2019

Efficient Wireless Network Scans For Computing Devices, Kai Shi, Kumar Anand

Defensive Publications Series

Computing devices increasingly provide wireless network connections rather than wired network connections. In order to support the wireless network connections, the computing devices scan for wireless access points (WAPs) in a number of different ways that may avoid needless consumption of power. For example, the computing devices may support periodic preferred network offload (PNO) scans that enable low-power wireless network scans for so-called “preferred networks” while the primary processor is in a low power (or, in other words, stand-by state). The computing devices may also separately enable roaming scans for switching between WAPs associated with the same wireless network (e.g., …

But Them Can’T Be God: Chinese Textiles In Nigerian Dress And The Art Of Ayo Akinwande, Erin M. Rice Dec 2019

But Them Can’T Be God: Chinese Textiles In Nigerian Dress And The Art Of Ayo Akinwande, Erin M. Rice

Artl@s Bulletin

This article explores the influence of Chinese actors in the Nigerian textile industry through the lens of a work by the artist Ayo Akinwande. By examining a sartorial practice called aso-ebi, the author argues that the growth of this practice over the course of the 20th century paved the way for an influx of cheap, printed cloth from China. Akinwande’s work titled, “Win-Win,” uses the metaphor of indigenous dress and patterned fabric to illustrate that Chinese involvement in Nigerian affairs extends beyond textiles to the construction industry.

Interpretable Deep Neural Network For Cancer Survival Analysis By Integrating Genomic And Clinical Data, Jie Hao, Youngsoon Kim, Tejaswini Mallavarapu, Jung Hun Oh, Mingon Kang

Computer Science Faculty Research

Background: Understanding the complex biological mechanisms of cancer patient survival using genomic and clinical data is vital, not only to develop new treatments for patients, but also to improve survival prediction. However, highly nonlinear and high-dimension, low-sample size (HDLSS) data cause computational challenges to applying conventional survival analysis. Results: We propose a novel biologically interpretable pathway-based sparse deep neural network, named Cox-PASNet, which integrates high-dimensional gene expression data and clinical data on a simple neural network architecture for survival analysis. Cox-PASNet is biologically interpretable where nodes in the neural network correspond to biological genes and pathways, while capturing the nonlinear …

Schulman, Frank Sicheri, Mike Tyers, Gary Kleiger

Life Sciences Faculty Research

The cullin-RING ligases (CRLs) form the major family of E3 ubiquitin ligases. The prototypic CRLs in yeast, called SCF enzymes, employ a single E2 enzyme, Cdc34, to build poly-ubiquitin chains required for degradation. In contrast, six different human E2 and E3 enzyme activities, including Cdc34 orthologs UBE2R1 and UBE2R2, appear to mediate SCF-catalyzed substrate polyubiquitylation in vitro. The combinatorial interplay of these enzymes raises questions about genetic buffering of SCFs in human cells and challenges the dogma that E3s alone determine substrate specificity. To enable the quantitative comparisons of SCF-dependent ubiquitylation reactions with physiological enzyme concentrations, mass spectrometry was employed …

Fundamental Limits To The Transfer Of Energy Harvested From Ferroelectric Materials Under Shock Loading, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Jay B. Chase Dec 2019

Fundamental Limits To The Transfer Of Energy Harvested From Ferroelectric Materials Under Shock Loading, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Jay B. Chase

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ferroelectrics are capable of producing megawatt power levels under shock loading due to stress-induced phase transformations, resulting in depolarization of the ferroelectric materials. This power can be used for generation of high voltages, high currents, or ultrahigh-power electromagnetic radiation. The results are reported herein on an experimental study of limitations on energy harvested from shocked Pb0.99(Zr0.95Ti0.05)0.98Nb0.02O3 and PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 ferroelectrics and transferred to external electrical systems. The experimental results indicate that one of the limits to the energy transfer is electric breakdown that occurs within …
