On April 23, 1852, Ramona de la Peña became a widow for the second time when she buried Eusebio García at the Inmaculada Concepción Parish of Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas. The priest who conducted the burial, Father José Luis Gonzaga García, had ministered to her family over the previous thirteen years and baptized five of the couple’s children. He christened their youngest, Gregorio, about a year earlier. On the day of the burial, the priest wrote a sacramental record that described Eusebio García’s death “in the hands of the Americans” (en manos de los americanos). He was one of eight Mexicans …

The Global Dominance Of European Competition Law Over American Antitrust Law, Anu Bradford, Adam S. Chilton, Katerina Linos, Alex Weaver Jan 2019

The Global Dominance Of European Competition Law Over American Antitrust Law, Anu Bradford, Adam S. Chilton, Katerina Linos, Alex Weaver

Faculty Scholarship

The world’s biggest consumer markets – the European Union and the United States – have adopted different approaches to regulating competition. This has not only put the EU and US at odds in high-profile investigations of anticompetitive conduct, but also made them race to spread their regulatory models. Using a novel dataset of competition statutes, we investigate this race to influence the world’s regulatory landscape and find that the EU’s competition laws have been more widely emulated than the US’s competition laws. We then argue that both “push” and “pull” factors explain the appeal of the EU’s competition regime: the …

Promoting Support For Public Health Policies Through Mediated Contact: Can Narrator Perspective And Self-Disclosure Curb In-Group Favoritism?, Riva Tukachinsky, Emily Brogan-Freitas, Tessa Urbanovich Jan 2019

Promoting Support For Public Health Policies Through Mediated Contact: Can Narrator Perspective And Self-Disclosure Curb In-Group Favoritism?, Riva Tukachinsky, Emily Brogan-Freitas, Tessa Urbanovich

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

An online 2 × 2 factorial experiment (N = 203) examined the effect of parasocial contact on support for public health policies in the context of opioid addiction. We hypothesize that because of an intergroup dynamic, individuals are less likely to engage with an outgroup character than an in-group character featured in a news magazine article. Results support the in-group favoritism hypothesis. The study examines two narrative devices for overcoming this tendency: the narrator’s perspective and amount of insight into the character’s inner world through character self-disclosure. We find support for the narrator perspective but not for the self-disclosure effect. …

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Creep Deformation In Nickel-Based Superalloy, Sabila Kader Pinky Jan 2019

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Creep Deformation In Nickel-Based Superalloy, Sabila Kader Pinky

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The present study employs molecular dynamics simulations of Ni-based superalloy to investigate the creep behavior under uniaxial compression test. Dislocation dynamics is analyzed for the nickel-based single crystal superalloy with the presence of void and with varying the distribution of gamma-prime phase The results show that multiple-void systems are more prone to yield than single-void systems and single-void systems are more prone to yield than the system without void. From the simulations, it has been determined that the creep mechanism in Ni/Ni3Al is subject to change on the applied stress depending on the distribution of gamma-prime phases change. Dislocation behavior …

Thermomechanical Processing Of Mg-Li-Al Ultralight Alloys, Rezawana Islam Jan 2019

Thermomechanical Processing Of Mg-Li-Al Ultralight Alloys, Rezawana Islam

Theses and Dissertations

Globally, magnesium (Mg), as the lightest metallic material, imparts a significant long term impact on the stipulation of lightweight structures in aerospace and automotive industries. However, the deformation behavior of magnesium at ambient (room) temperature is not acceptable for most of the structural applications because of its hexagonal closed pack (hcp) structure and limited active slip systems which result in an unacceptable level of brittleness (literally no formability at ambient temperature). Having said this, alloying Mg with an element with more active slip system in its crystalline structure (i.e. lithium with body center cubic crystalline structure) might be a solution …

Reservoir Characterization And Simulation Of Enhanced Oil Recovery For Bakken, Runxuan Sun Jan 2019

Reservoir Characterization And Simulation Of Enhanced Oil Recovery For Bakken, Runxuan Sun

Theses and Dissertations

The Bakken formation is one of the largest unconventional resources in the world with approximately 92 billion barrels of recoverable oil. However, the primary oil recovery factor remains as low as less than 10% of the original oil in place (OOIP). Given the vast Bakken resources and low primary oil recovery, there is a need and enormous potential for the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in Bakken.

Two comprehensive numerical compositional models were built for the simulation CO2 Huff-n-Puff and cyclic surfactant injection in an actual Middle Bakken horizontal well. A good history match of primary production was obtained. Embedded Discrete …

A Systematic Analysis Of Temporal Trends In The Sit-Ups Performance Of 9,939,289 Children And Adolescents Between 1964 And 2017 Representing 31 Countries, Tori Kaster

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To estimate national and international temporal trends in the sit-ups

performance of children and adolescents, and to examine relationships between trends in sit-ups performance and trends in health-related and sociodemographic indicators. Methods: Data were obtained in three ways: (a) through a systematic electronic database search of studies reporting on temporal trends in the handgrip strength of apparently healthy 9–17 year-olds, (b) by pearling reference lists, topical systematic reviews and personal libraries, and (c) by examining large country-level fitness datasets suitable to temporal trends analysis. Sample-weighted temporal trends (expressed as percent and standardized trends) were estimated at the country-sex-age level …

Fracture Detection And Prediction In Unconventional Reservoirs For Finding Sweet Spot, Sofiane Djezzar Jan 2019

Fracture Detection And Prediction In Unconventional Reservoirs For Finding Sweet Spot, Sofiane Djezzar

Theses and Dissertations

The Cambro-Ordovician in the Algerian Saharan platform is characterized by tight sandstone formations with very low petrophysical characteristics where the natural fractures play an important role in their productivity. The Mouydir basin is the less explored basin in Algeria where no 3D seismic data exist and only low quality of seismic 2D surveys are available. In addition, few wells were drilled in the fifties exist in this basin. They were drilled based on the field observations, gravity data, geological maps, and seismic refraction data. Unfortunately, these wells were all negative. The Mouydir basin is limited in the west by the …

An Exploration Of In-Person And Online Social Interaction: Examining The Effects Of Two Domains Of Social Behavior, Michael David Prazak Jan 2019

An Exploration Of In-Person And Online Social Interaction: Examining The Effects Of Two Domains Of Social Behavior, Michael David Prazak

Theses and Dissertations

Social interaction is a core dimension of a fulfilling life. At present, the study of social interaction has focused largely on online social interaction due to the prevalence of this behavior in modern society, and the large impact of this manner of interaction on the psychological health of individuals. In terms of online behavior, both positive and negative effects may be experienced. Better understanding predictors and outcomes of online behavior would thus be a timely and valuable contribution to literature. The present study examined anxious and avoidant attachment style as predictors of social intimacy, levels of both in-person and online …

Petrophysical Characterization Of Reservoir And Oil Properties As A Tool For Choosing Optimal Enhanced Oil Recovery Methods: Case Study Of Dawson Bay Formation, Divide County, North Dakota, United States, Kayode James Olatunji Jan 2019

Petrophysical Characterization Of Reservoir And Oil Properties As A Tool For Choosing Optimal Enhanced Oil Recovery Methods: Case Study Of Dawson Bay Formation, Divide County, North Dakota, United States, Kayode James Olatunji

Theses and Dissertations

In unconventional reservoirs, i.e., shaly or tight sand formations, with low porosity and very low permeability, the oil recovery factor is low hence enhanced oil recovery is important. In the conventional reservoirs, once the primary and secondary stages of recovery are exhausted, about two-thirds of the original oil in place is left behind. Enhanced Oil Recovery aims to recover the remaining oil (Green and Wilhite, 1998). These makes the enhanced oil recovery to be of great importance. Efforts are always in place to see how the system can be improved.

The study was carried out to describe the overview of …
