This thesis conducts a techno-economic feasibility analysis of tiny homes. Scenarios generated using a mathematical and physical model of energy use of zero-net energy tiny homes in coastal Humboldt County are compared with conventional energy systems powered by fossil-fuels for lifecycle economic cost, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy use. A residence of 2,425 ft.² (near the regional average) is simulated to offer a broader standard of comparison. A tiny home village model with outlying bedrooms and a central building for cooking, laundry and shower facilities is compared to a standalone tiny home model. A community services building …

There are various stressors that exist in different natural environments. The function of a stress response is to provide an organism with a better chance at survival. A functional stress response is essential to the survival of many species, but the influence of ecology on these behaviors is poorly understood. Astyanax mexicanus provides an effective model to study this relationship. In this thesis we used variations of the novel tank assay to investigate the connection between ecology and behavior. As a result of increases in regulations and taxes the government instituted to pay for a series of costly wars at the end of the 17th century, smuggling greatly increased. With the implementation of major punishments for smuggling, such as the death penalty, the smuggling trade grew more violent. In 1868, the leadership of Florida, faced with the emancipation and enfranchisement of its slave population, amended the state’s Constitution to disenfranchise those convicted of a felony. Criminal statutes were written criminalizing actions that were believed to be committed most often by African Americans. The original 60,000 population at risk of disenfranchisement would grow to 1,400,000 people over the course of the next 150 years. In November 2018, voters in Florida voted to once again amend the State’s Constitution, this time to restore the franchise to previously convicted felons. The 8th Amendment forbids excessive bail, but this essential Constitutional protection has been undermined. The Supreme Court held in U.S. v. Salerno that the Constitution does not entitle defendants to bail and allowed federal courts to deny bail if they deem the defendant a threat to the community. However, both history and the current problems in the bail system demonstrate the Court erred in its ruling. Although the pastoral poem's intrinsic formulation—a latent yearning for a lost time and space—has stayed constant, the minuscule shifts in what constitutes this idyllic respite reveal a great deal about the era it was written. To treat neurological diseases and disorders, the drug must cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Polar and high molecular weight molecules, such as peptides, are impeded by the BBB. Alternatively, intranasal administration allows the delivery of these molecules to the brain by bypassing the BBB. To improve intranasal delivery to the brain, novel cyclic opioid peptides DADLE-OL I and II were created as a proof-of-concept using a novel strategy that involved grafting a bioactive sequence into the scaffold of a cyclic peptide. In Fall 2018, John D. MacArthur Beach State Park’s estuary was surveyed to determine the health and distribution of their oysters. These organisms provide important ecological functions, so their populations are an important reflection on the health of the estuary. Hypothesis one is to determine oyster health by comparing environmental conditions, oyster densities, shell heights, and condition indexes today to a 2010 survey. The second hypothesis is to determine where oysters congregate, either on soft or hard substrates or in different estuary zones. The practice of trainhopping has historical roots in the post-Civil War period and during the Great Depression, when large migrations of penniless individuals caught rides on freight cars to find employment or adventure. Trainhopping is still widely practiced, however modern day trainhopping culture has not received appropriate scholarly attention as a specific subculture. Researchers are currently designing RNAs for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and an understanding of the factors that affect stability of these RNAs could inform the design of new RNA constructs. This project involved the use of in silico experiments to investigate the effects of different nucleotide substitutions on the stability of RNAs using EteRNA, a publicly available, online computer modeling software developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon and Stanford Universities to study RNA folding. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is granted in the United States to individuals from countries undergoing armed conflicts, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. TPS holders may obtain employment authorization but the status does not come with any specific pathway to permanent residency and may be revoked by the Department of Homeland Security. Asylum status may be granted to individuals in the United States who can demonstrate a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. The controversial debate over Affirmative Action in higher education institutions center on the constitutionality of legislative public policies to enact steps to create racially diverse campuses. Concerns arise from Affirmative Action policies in undergraduate and graduate college admission that those policies cause further harm than good for all prospective students. Citizens comment that racialized preferential treatment in public policies steer society from becoming equal and continues racial tension. I argue that Affirmative Action is constitutional under the Equal Protection Clause in the Fourteenth Amendment and essential for minorities as a legal remedy for past wrongs.

This paper examines the impact of crime rates, immigrant populations, and previous policies on the decision by law enforcement agencies to participate in the 287(g) program. Through the program, state, county, and local police and sheriff’s departments sign agreements with the Department of Homeland Security to give officers authorization to interrogate and detain people while they are checked against a database for an ICE detainer. The study focused on sources, format preference and challenges faced by the engineering students of the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State in accessing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) information resources. The study adopted a survey method. Questionnaire was administered on a sample size of 379 students selected from the School of Engineering of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, from a population of 7400 students through a stratified sampling technique. 306 sets of questionnaire were returned and valid for analysis, representing 80.74% return rate.
