Chemistry and Biochemistry

In this study, we provide a quantitative description of the adsorption of water-soluble N-substituted glycine oligomers (peptoids) to supported lipid bilayers that mimic mammalian plasma membranes. We prepared a small array of systematically varied peptoid sequences ranging in length from 3 to 15 residues. Using the nonlinear optical method second harmonic generation (SHG), we directly monitored adsorption of aqueous solutions of 3- and 15-residue peptoids to phospholipid membranes of varying physical phase, cholesterol content, and head group charge in physiologically relevant pH buffer conditions without the use of extrinsic labels. Equilibrium binding constants and relative surface coverages of adsorbed peptoids …

The Determinants Of A Health-Promoting Lifestyle In Older Adults, Patricia A. Stockert Jun 2019

The Determinants Of A Health-Promoting Lifestyle In Older Adults, Patricia A. Stockert

Dissertations

Health promotion for the older adult is of critical concern for nursing. Health promotion activities may help this group maintain their health, experience optimal functional capacity, remain independent, and lower medical costs. Limited and conflicting information on health promotion activities and factors that influence these behaviors is available in this population. The purpose of this study was to identify determinants of a health-promoting lifestyle in an older adult population by examining components of the Health Promotion Model. The study also used structural equation modeling to examine the psychometric properties of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLPII) in older adults. …

The Impact Of Stress, Coping, Constructive Thinking And Hardiness On Health And Academic Performance Of Female Registered Nurse Students Pursuing A Baccalaureate Degree In Nursing, Diane D. Cox Jun 2019

The Impact Of Stress, Coping, Constructive Thinking And Hardiness On Health And Academic Performance Of Female Registered Nurse Students Pursuing A Baccalaureate Degree In Nursing, Diane D. Cox

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test a theoretically-derived model of hardiness, constructive thinking, coping complexity and perceived stress level in predicting academic performance and perceived health status among female registered nurse students pursuing a baccalaureate degree in nursing. It was hypothesized that hardiness and constructive thinking would directly affect perceived stress level and coping complexity and indirectly affect perceived health status and academic performance. Neuman's Systems Model together with Lazarus and Folkman's theory on stress provided the theoretical framework.

Neurostimulator With Waveforms Inspired By Nature For Wearable Electro-Acupuncture, Jose Aquiles Parodi Amaya Jun 2019

Neurostimulator With Waveforms Inspired By Nature For Wearable Electro-Acupuncture, Jose Aquiles Parodi Amaya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The work presented here has 3 goals: establish the need for novel neurostimulation waveform solutions through a literature review, develop a neurostimulation pulse generator, and verify the operation of the device for neurostimulation applications.

The literature review discusses the importance of stimulation waveforms on the outcomes of neurostimulation, and proposes new directions for neurostimulation research that would help in improving the reproducibility and comparability between studies.

The pulse generator circuit is then described that generates signals inspired by the shape of excitatory or inhibitory post-synaptic potentials (EPSP, IPSP). The circuit analytical equations are presented, and the effects of the circuit …

Chemosensors Based On Higher Energy Gap Control Of Fluorescence In Conjugated Polymers, Chun-Han Wang Jun 2019

Chemosensors Based On Higher Energy Gap Control Of Fluorescence In Conjugated Polymers, Chun-Han Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have been widely investigated for their remarkably high sensitivity towards various chemical detection applications. CPs can exhibit effective transduction of certain analyte binding events through changes in fluorescence. These changes include amplified fluorescence quenching ("turn-offmechanism") or an appearance of a fluorescent emission ("turn-onmechanism"). Whereas turn-offsensors can be readily designed and are widely used, amplifying turn-onsensors, from a practical standpoint, are more convenient to use but are more challenging to design.

This dissertation primarily focuses on the development and study of conjugated polymer based amplifying turn-onfluorescence chemosensors utilizing the novel “higher …

A Tale Of Two Books: The Relationship Between John Harvey Kellogg’S Living Temple And Ellen G. White’S Ministry Of Healing, Thomas Rasmussen Jun 2019

A Tale Of Two Books: The Relationship Between John Harvey Kellogg’S Living Temple And Ellen G. White’S Ministry Of Healing, Thomas Rasmussen

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

In contemporary society John H. Kellogg is more known for his medical inventions, than he is for the book The Living Temple, which was published in 1903. However, within Adventism the name Kellogg denotes crisis and controversy. The thesis of this paper is that Ellen White responded to the Kellogg’s publication in three ways: personally—to John Kellogg; prophetically—to the Seventh-day Adventist Church; and publicly—with the book The Ministry of Healing, which was published two years later in 1905. It is the public response that is of primary interest to this paper. Ellen White wrote many personal letters to Kellogg leading …

A Student Research Manual: Helping Students Help Themselves Identifying And Addressing Challenges Facing Prospective Undergraduate Researchers, Landon Rohrer, Karen L. Sirum

Honors Projects

Undergraduate research does not only help equip STEM majors to be better researchers and employees but increases retention of students to graduate school in needed scientific fields. However, while resources are being produced for undergraduates like Undergraduate Research Experiences (UREs), Centers for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (CURS), and Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), undergraduate involvement and awareness about these resources, and the value of undergraduate research in general, does not seem to be improving. Therefore, it would be valuable to figure out why undergraduates aren't autonomously seeking out undergraduate research during their studies. To investigate why, a two-part survey was …

Porcine Interferon Complex And Co-Evolution With Increasing Viral Pressure After Domestication, Jordan Jennings, Yongming Sang Jun 2019

Porcine Interferon Complex And Co-Evolution With Increasing Viral Pressure After Domestication, Jordan Jennings, Yongming Sang

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Consisting of nearly 60 functional genes, porcine interferon (IFN)-complex represents an evolutionary surge of IFN evolution in domestic ungulate species. To compare with humans and mice, each of these species contains about 20 IFN functional genes, which are better characterized using the conventional IFN-α/β subtypes as examples. Porcine IFN-complex thus represents an optimal model for studying IFN evolution that resulted from increasing viral pressure during domestication and industrialization. We hypothesize and justify that porcine IFN-complex may extend its functionality in antiviral and immunomodulatory activity due to its superior molecular diversity. Furthermore, these unconventional IFNs could even confer some functional and …

Tissue-Specific 3 Prime-End Adenylation Of Mir-125b Mediates Cell Survival, Matthew T. Blahna, Jean-Charles Neel, Ge Yu, Justin Louie, Prajakta Ghatpande, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata

Biology

Next-generation sequencing has uncovered microRNAs (miRNAs) that undergo sequence modifications, known as isomiRs. Their physiological significance, however, remains uncertain, partly because they generally comprise a small fraction of total miRNAs. Here we report that more than 60% of miR-125b, one of the most abundant miRNAs in vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMC), exists as an edited isoform containing a non-templated adenosine residue at the 3 prime-end (miR-125b+A). The properties of miR-125b+A, such as stability and subcellular localization, are similar to those of canonical miR-125b, but miR-125b+A more potently inhibits the expression of a subgroup of targets, including the apoptosis effector Caspase-6 …

Effects Of Dietary Mortierella Alpine Meal Levels On Growth, Body Fatty Acid Composition And Arachidonic Acid Retention For Orange-Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus Coioides, Yu-Hung Lin, Man-Ting Chiu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study investigated the effect of using Mortierella alpina meal (MAM) as a dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) source on the growth, whole-body fatty acid composition, and ARA retention of the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Four diets supplemented with 0% (control), 1%, 2%, and 5% MAM actually contained 0.93%, 1.14%, 1.34%, and 1.93% ARA. Four experimental diets were fed to triplicate groups of fish (initial weight: 7.21 ± 0.21 g) in a recirculating system for 8 weeks. The final body weight, weight gain percentage, specific growth rate, daily feed intake, feed efficiency, and survival of fish did not significantly differ (p …

Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research

Apolipoproteins and apolipoprotein-defined lipoprotein subclasses have been associated with dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Our main objective was to define associations of serum apolipoproteins and ADLS with any CVD and major atherosclerotic cardiovascular events (MACE) in a prospective study of T1D. Serum apolipoproteins and ADLS (14 biomarkers in total) were measured in sera (obtained 1997-2000) from a subset (n=465) of the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) cohort. Prospective associations of any CVD (myocardial infarction, stroke, confirmed angina, silent MI, revascularization, or congestive heart failure) and MACE (fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction or stroke), over 5942 and 6180 patient-years …

Linking Water Quality To Aedes Aegypti And Zika In Flood-Prone Neighborhoods, Susan Harrell Yee, Donald A. Yee, Rebeca De Jesus Crespo, Autumn Oczkowski, Fengwei Bai, Stephanie Friedman

Faculty Publications

The ability of ecosystems to regulate water quality and flood events has been linked to health outcomes, including mosquito-borne illnesses. In the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed of Puerto Rico, habitat alterations and land-use development have disrupted watershed hydrology, exacerbating wastewater discharges and subjecting some neighborhoods to frequent flooding events. In 2016, the mosquito-borne illness Zika became a new cause for concern. We hypothesized that nutrient-enriched flood water could provide pulses of supplemental nutrients to local mosquito populations. We conducted a field study in six neighborhoods adjacent to the estuary to assess whether environmental variability of nutrient inputs could be …

Flammable, explosive and toxic gases, such as hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic compounds vapor, are major threats to the ecological environment safety and human health. Among the available technologies, gas sensing is a vital component, and has been widely studied in literature for early detection and warning. As a metal oxide semiconductor, zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) represents a kind of promising gas sensing material with a spinel structure, which also shows a fine gas sensing performance to reducing gases. Due to its great potentials and widespread applications, this article is intended to provide a review on the latest development in …

Working Paper No. 15, Jevons’ Selective Interpretation Of Bentham, Devin Bales Jun 2019

Working Paper No. 15, Jevons’ Selective Interpretation Of Bentham, Devin Bales

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that in The Theory of Political Economy, W. Stanley Jevons offers a selective interpretation of Jeremy Bentham’s notion of utility. Moreover, Jevons does so in a manner that generates enduring implications for Economics as a science. Special emphasis is placed upon Jevons’ use of Bentham’s understanding of the circumstances that direct pursuits of pleasure and avoidance of pain. Emphasized is that Jevons’ omission of ‘fecundity, purity, and extent’ as quantifiers of utility, creates enduring implications that emerged years after his book’s publication in 1871. What is finally considered are some of the difficulties associated …
