Density-Mediated Interactions Are Stronger But More Variable Than Trait-Mediated Interactions In Predator–Prey Systems, Travis M. Flock
Density-Mediated Interactions Are Stronger But More Variable Than Trait-Mediated Interactions In Predator–Prey Systems, Travis M. Flock
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Theoretical and empirical considerations of predator-prey dynamics have sought to determine the dominant of two effects exerted by predators onto prey: consumptive effects of predators and non-consumptive, or trait-mediated, effects. Many studies have identified trait-mediated interactions (TMIs) in diverse taxa, and meta-analyses of these studies found that prey population dynamics are as strongly – if not more strongly – affected by TMIs as density-mediated interactions (DMIs). Since then, there is now an expanded primary literature, and given this potential for new insight on the direct and indirect effect of predators on prey, the cost of traits involved in TMIs relative …

During the summers of 2015 and 2018, we observed predation on Foothill Yellow-legged Frogs (Rana boylii) by a giant water bug (Abedus indentatus), a California Red-legged Frog (Rana draytonii), and a Diablo Range Gartersnake (Thamnophis atratus zaxanthus) adjacent to 3 separate isolated pools along intermittent reaches of Coyote Creek, Santa Clara County, California, USA. To the best of our knowledge, our observations provide the first published record of California Red-legged Frog and giant water bug preying upon Foothill Yellow-legged Frogs. As pool habitat contracts over the course of the dry season, locally …

Cytochrome Oxidase I Sequences From Northern And Southern California Suggest Cryptic Baetis (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) Species, Natalie J. Stauffer-Olsen, Patrick M. O'Grady, Vincent H. Resh
Western North American Naturalist
The geographically widespread mayfly genus Baetis occurs from the subarctic to tropical regions of the world. Many of the 20 described Baetis species in North America are known to show cryptic species diversity. However, studies of Baetis that have examined morphology and genetic diversity have found mixed results in terms of cryptic species, with some studies indicating a complex of related species and others suggesting a single widespread species. We used Bayesian analyses, intra- and interspecific genetic diversity values, and median-joining haplotype networks to compare cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequences from Baetis specimens from parts of northern and southern California …

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
Calibration of CubeSat and other small payloads presents a variety of challenges including greater susceptibility to the space environment, volume constraints on calibration sources and subsystems, and power constraints on electronics. CIRiS (Compact Infrared Radiometer in Space), built by Ball Aerospace, is a multispectral, thermal infrared, radiometric imaging instrument with on-board calibration system, whose small volume (< 8 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm), weight (< 2 kg) and power (< 9.5 W average, including heaters) are compatible with CubeSat spacecraft, or any application with resource constraints. CIRiS has been integrated to a 6U spacecraft bus for an upcoming mission in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The primary mission objective is demonstration of new technologies for radiometric imaging and calibration from CubeSats or SmallSats. New technologies on CIRiS include two 1/8 inch thick, flat-panel, high emissivity (e> .9965) carbon nanotube (CNT) blackbody sources and a new model of uncooled microbolometer Focal Plane Array (FPA) with less demanding temperature stabilization requirements than previous versions.
Three calibration views are available in space: to 1) deep space 2) an on-board CNT source at …

Comments On Steven Smith, Pagans And Christians In The City, Michael P. Moreland
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
One of the most interesting aspects of this generally very interesting book was the discussion of sexual morality in paganism and Christianity. I have thought for a while that much of the contemporary debate about religious freedom is not about religious freedom in a generic sense but instead about religious freedom in a very particular context—sex. But that is a descriptive point—much more challenging is trying to give an account of why sex should have come to be (or as Smith’s argument implies, has long been) the battlefield on which much of the fight over religious freedom takes place. …

The Interdisciplinary Aspects Of Computing, Warren Wang
JCCC Honors Journal
The role of computing has aided humankind for over thousands of years, helping them with calculating and crunching large numbers with ease. Although it has been around for millenniums, the advancement we had in these past few decades has been significantly greater than the past century. Intel 4004 was leading the technology revolution, creating the first ever single chip microprocessor containing 2300 transistors and producing 60,000 instructions per second. Consequently, the computing power exponentially grew to achieve a performance rate of over four million times the speed of the original microprocessor. The advancement of computing has allowed us to solve …

Exposure to environmental contaminants and consumption of a high, saturated fatty diet has been demonstrated to promote precursors for metabolic syndrome (hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hypertriglyceridemia). The purpose of this study was to determine if exposure to the most prevalent environmental persistent organic pollutants (POPs) would act as causative agents to promote metabolic syndrome independent of dietary intake. We hypothesized that POPs will activate the advanced glycated end-product (AGE)-and receptor for AGE (RAGE) signaling cascade to promote downstream signaling modulators of cardiovascular remodeling and oxidative stress in the heart. Kinetic Study Of Tire Carbon Black And Biomass Soot Steam Activation Used For The Removal Of Phenol And Chlorine From Drinking Water, Anna Trubetskaya, Manuel Garcia Perez
Pyroliq 2019: Pyrolysis and Liquefaction of Biomass and Wastes
This study aims to demonstrate a novel method for removing toxic chemicals using soot produced from wood and herbaceous biomass pyrolyzed in a drop tube reactor and tire pyrolytic carbon black. In order to improve the economic performance and reliability of entrained flow gasification, biomass soot has the potential to be captured, activated and further used as a sorbent to remove a broad range of pollutants from wastewater. In recent years, the disposal of waste tires has become an important issue. The liquid hydrocarbons and solid char residue from thermal conversion of waste tires have potential to be used as …

Biological Sciences
Diversity of secondary lichen metabolites and their relationship to substrate and environmental parameters were studied in saxicolous lichens in the Middle and South Urals of Russia. Atranorin, usnic acid, gyrophoric acid, zeorin, norstictic acid, antraquinones and stictic acid were found in 73, 42, 41, 37, 36, 35 and 32 species, respectively, of 543 taxa collected. One hundred and ninety six species (i.e., 36% of total species documented) contained no secondary metabolites. Spectra of secondary metabolites of crustose lichens varied on different rock types, while in fruticose and foliose groups only those species without lichen acids were dependent on the substrate …

Population Structure Of Avian Malaria Parasites, Robert Ricklefs, Meghann Humphries, Matthew Stacy
Biology Department Faculty Works
The geographic distribution of genetic diversity in malaria parasite populations (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) presumably influences local patterns of virulence and the evolution of host‐resistance, but little is known about population genetic structure in these parasites. We assess the distribution of genetic diversity in the partial Domain I of apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) in three mtDNA‐defined lineages of avian Plasmodium to determine spatial population structure and host–parasite genetic relationships. We find that one parasite lineage is genetically differentiated in association with a single host genus and among some locations, but not with respect to other hosts. Two other parasite lineages are …

Background: Several studies showed that there is a relationship between vitamin and mineral status and muscle strength. In particular this is the case for handgrip strength (HS) and vitamin D deficiency. In bariatric surgery there is a risk of decrease in muscle strength after surgery and also vitamin and mineral deficiencies are not uncommon. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of low vitamin 25 (OH) cholecalciferol levels, high dose cholecalciferol supplementation regime and protein intake on physical fitness, measured using handgrip strength (HS) and the shuttle walk run test (SWRT). Methods: For this retrospective …

Targeted livestock grazing is a proven tool for manipulating range land vegetation, and current knowledge about targeted livestock grazing is extensive and expanding rapidly. Targeted grazing prescriptions optimize the timing, frequency, intensity, and selectivity of grazing (or browsing) in combinations that purposely exert grazing/ browsing pressure on specific plant species or portions of the landscape. Targeted grazing differs from traditional grazing management in that the goal of targeted grazing is to apply defoliation or trampling to achieve specific vegetation management objectives, whereas the goal of traditional livestock grazing management is generally the production of livestock commodities. A shared aim of targeted …

Single-Molecule Imaging Reveals The Interplay Between Transcription Factors, Nucleosomes, And Transcriptional Bursting, Matthew L. Ferguson
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Transcription factors show rapid and reversible binding to chromatin in living cells, and transcription occurs in sporadic bursts, but how these phenomena are related is unknown. Using a combination of in vitro and in vivo single-molecule imaging approaches, we directly correlated binding of the Gal4 transcription factor with the transcriptional bursting kinetics of the Gal4 target genes GAL3 and GAL10 in living yeast cells. We find that Gal4 dwell time sets the transcriptional burst size. Gal4 dwell time depends on the affinity of the binding site and is reduced by orders of magnitude by nucleosomes. Using a novel imaging platform …

Pyroliq 2019: Pyrolysis and Liquefaction of Biomass and Wastes
In this presentation a comprehensive microkinetic modelling framework and experimental tools are used to describe product yield and composition of direct lignin liquefaction processes with and without solvents (See Figure 1). With the framework proposed we aim to develop a unified theory and models capable of describing both dry (pyrolysis) and wet (hydrothermal and solvolysis) lignin liquefaction processes. An important phenomenon that has been shown to occur during lignin pyrolysis (as well as cellulose) is the formation of a liquid intermediate phase, and subsequent ejection of heavy products (>~250 Da) as aerosols from this intermediate. In our presentation we …

Cancer therapy is a double-edged sword, as surgery and chemotherapy can induce an inflammatory/immunosuppressive injury response that promotes dormancy escape and tumor recurrence. We hypothesized that these events could be altered by early blockade of the inflammatory cascade and/or by accelerating the resolution of inflammation. Preoperative, but not postoperative, administration of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug ketorolac and/or resolvins, a family of specialized proresolving autacoid mediators, eliminated micrometastases in multiple tumor-resection models, resulting in long-term survival. Ketorolac unleashed anticancer T cell immunity that was augmented by immune checkpoint blockade, negated by adjuvant chemotherapy, and dependent on inhibition of the COX-1/thromboxane A2 …

Optic fissure fusion is a critical event during retinal development. Failure of fusion leads to coloboma, a potentially blinding congenital disorder. Pax2a is an essential regulator of optic fissure fusion and the target of numerous morphogenetic pathways. In our current study, we examined the negative regulator of pax2a expression, Nz2, and the mechanism modulating Nlz2 activity during optic fissure fusion. Upregulation of Nlz2 in zebrafish embryos resulted in downregulation of pax2a expression and fissure fusion failure. Conversely, upregulation of pax2a expression also led to fissure fusion failure suggesting Pax2 levels require modulation to ensure proper fusion. Interestingly, we discovered Nlz2 …

Cough sounds act as an important indicator of an individual's physical health, often used by medical professionals in diagnosing a patient's ailments. In recent years progress has been made in the area of automatically detecting cough events and, in certain cases, automatically identifying the ailment associated with a particular cough sound. Ethical and sensitivity issues associated with audio recordings of coughs makes it more difficult for this data to be made publicly available. However, without the public availability of a reliable database of cough sounds, developments in the area of audio event detection are likely to be hampered. The purpose …

The integration of new CO2 capture and storage technologies into energy generation processes has led to the development and study of the oxy-fuel combustion, in which the nitrogen in the air is replaced by recirculated CO2 that facilitates its capture and storage to reduce polluting emissions. Currently, the integration of oxy-fuel technologies with the use of new fuels such as bio-oil obtained from the pyrolysis of biomass is a topic of interest. In this case, the CO2 content surrounding the bio-oil droplets modifies the pyrolysis mechanism due to barriers in the diffusion of light volatiles at low temperatures (less than …

In a recent study, repeated cold application induced beiging in subcutaneous white adipose tissue (SC WAT) of humans independent of body mass index. To identify factors that promote or inhibit beiging, we performed multiplex analysis of gene expression with the Nanostring nCounter system (the probe set contained genes for specific immune cell markers, cytokines, and chemokines) on the SC WAT from lean subjects. Multiple correlations analysis identified mast cell tryptase and CCL26, a chemokine for mast cells, as genes whose change correlated positively with the change in UCP1 in SC WAT, leading to the hypothesis that mast cells promote SC …

Investigating Color Additive Molecules For Pharmaceutical And Cosmetic Applications: A Comparison Of Theoretical And Experimental Uv-Visible Absorbance Spectra In Tunable Solvents, Jacqueline Casey Mohen
Theses and Dissertations
Color additive molecules have widespread applications ranging from ingestible foods and pharmaceutics to non-ingestible cosmetics and other naturally or synthetically developed consumer products available worldwide. Certification for approved use of color additives varies globally; therefore, a feasible method to analyze existing color additives or to design novel color additive molecules with enhanced or otherwise desired physicochemical properties (such as hue) is in high demand for universal adoption. The studies herein provide sufficient proof that density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory serve as effective predictive modeling techniques for generating theoretical maximum absorbance spectral peak responsivity for a single color …
