The origins of the Department of Neurosurgery at Albany Medical College closely parallel the development of early America and the establishment of modern health care. The tales of Washington Irving, the works of the Hudson River School of painters, and summers in the Catskill Mountains or Adirondacks are the stories that color the history of Upstate New York (Figure1). As a social, industrial, and political hub of the American colonies, New England’s need for centers providing structured medicine led to the creation of Albany Medical College in1839, one of the earliest such institutions in the young nation.1 Rapid progress in nearly …

African American Parent Perspectives On School Segregation And Integration, Beatrice Rendon
African American Parent Perspectives On School Segregation And Integration, Beatrice Rendon
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This capstone thesis explores the question: What are African American parent perspectives on segregation and integration in a large urban district in the Midwest? I review the literature on Critical Race Theory, counterstorytelling as a narrative research approach, historical factors leading to re-segregation in American schools, African American family engagement paradigms, African American families and school choice, and the effects of segregation on students. My narrative research approach centers the voices of four African American women who tell the stories of their school experiences as students and parents of Black children in the same urban district. While each parent had …

Exploring New Teacher Beliefs: Identity, Home-Life, And Culture In The Classroom, Frederick B. Bradley Iii
Exploring New Teacher Beliefs: Identity, Home-Life, And Culture In The Classroom, Frederick B. Bradley Iii
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A persistent shortage of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students, teachers, and professionals is seen by many as a threat to the nation’s global economic standing. Deficits in these areas are often attributed to a lack of quality K-12 STEM education, which is due in large part to a high rate of teacher turnover. Moreover, such teacher attrition has been shown to occur far more often in high-need schools and districts; thus serving to further marginalize disadvantaged members of society.
This study occurs within the context of The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program at our research-intensive university in the southeastern …

“It’S A Broken System That’S Designed To Destroy”: A Critical Narrative Analysis Of Healthcare Providers’ Stories About Race, Reproductive Health, And Policy, Brianna Rae Cusanno
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Constructions of race, reproductive health, and gender have been inextricably linked in the United States since the beginning of the nation. Today, these linkages remain evident in the marked racial and gender inequities in reproductive health outcomes that persist in the U.S. To better understand how these meanings and material outcomes are negotiated and produced by actors on the ground, this study asked: “How do reproductive healthcare providers (RHPs) communicate about the intersections of race, reproductive health, and policy?” I conducted semi- structures interviews with 24 RHPs, resulting in over 35 hours of recorded interviews. Drawing on critical-cultural communication, Reproductive …

Microplastics are an ecological stressor with implications for ecosystem and human health when present in seafood. We quantified microplastic types, concentrations, anatomical burdens, geographic distribution, and temporal differences in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and Pacific razor clams (Siliqua patula) from 15 Oregon coast, U.S.A. sites. Organisms were chemically digested and visually analyzed for microplastics, and material type was determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Microplastics were present in organisms from all sites. On average, whole oysters and razor clams contained 10.95 ± 0.77 and 8.84 ± 0.45 microplastic pieces per individual, or 0.35 ± 0.04 and …

A Microfluidics-Based Cross-Flow Filtration Platform For Rapid Processing Of Amphiphilic Biomarkers From Blood, Kiersten D. Lenz
A Microfluidics-Based Cross-Flow Filtration Platform For Rapid Processing Of Amphiphilic Biomarkers From Blood, Kiersten D. Lenz
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Early and accurate detection of bacterial infections can help save lives, prevent the spread of disease, and decrease the overuse of antibiotics. Our team at the Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed novel assays to detect bacterial biomarkers from patient blood at the point-of-care in order to facilitate a universal diagnostic platform. However, these biomarkers are amphiphilic in nature, and this biochemical property causes them to be sequestered by high-density and low-density lipoproteins (HDL and LDL) in the host’s blood. Extraction of the bacterial biomarkers from the lipoprotein complexes is thereby required for the development and deployment of a diagnostic …

The Effects Of Economic Factors And Groundwater Policies On The Timing Of Well Drilling, Qianyu Zhang
The Effects Of Economic Factors And Groundwater Policies On The Timing Of Well Drilling, Qianyu Zhang
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Understanding the factors that affect farmers’ irrigation decisions is critical for a better groundwater management. This study addresses the question of how economic, agronomic, and policy variables affect the timing of irrigation adoption in Nebraska. The key contribution of this paper is to identify farmers’ strategic responses to a particular type of policy intervention, a moratorium on well drilling. Our results estimate how farmers respond when a moratorium is announced but not enforced yet, and when neighboring areas implement a moratorium, which we refer as pre-regulation effect and policy spillover effect, respectively. Results show that farmers are more likely to …

In Vivo Human-Like Robotic Phenotyping Of Leaf And Stem Traits In Maize And Sorghum In Greenhouse, Abbas Atefi
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In plant phenotyping, the measurement of morphological, physiological and chemical traits of leaves and stems is needed to investigate and monitor the condition of plants. The manual measurement of these properties is time consuming, tedious, error prone, and laborious. The use of robots is a new approach to accomplish such endeavors, which enables automatic monitoring with minimal human intervention. In this study, two plant phenotyping robotic systems were developed to realize automated measurement of plant leaf properties and stem diameter which could reduce the tediousness of data collection compare to manual measurements. The robotic systems comprised of a four degree …
Herbicide Drift Influence On Amaranthus Spp. Herbicide Resistance Evolution, Bruno Canella Vieira
Herbicide Drift Influence On Amaranthus Spp. Herbicide Resistance Evolution, Bruno Canella Vieira
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The adverse consequences of herbicide drift towards sensitive crops have been extensively reported in the literature. However, no information is available on the consequences of herbicide drift onto weed species inhabiting boundaries of agricultural fields. Exposure to herbicide drift could be detrimental to long-term weed management as several weed species have evolved herbicide resistance after recurrent selection with low herbicide rates. Despite the herbicide drift exposure and its potential implications on resistance evolution and weed management, resistance prone weed species such as Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) and waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus) are often neglected and not properly …

The helmeted guinea fowl Numida meleagris belongs to the order Galliformes. Its natural range includes a large part of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Eritrea and from Chad to South Africa. Archaeozoological and artistic evidence suggest domestication of this species may have occurred about 2,000 years BP in Mali and Sudan primarily as a food resource, although villagers also benefit from its capacity to give loud alarm calls in case of danger, of its ability to consume parasites such as ticks and to hunt snakes, thus suggesting its domestication may have resulted from a commensal association process. Today, it is …
Effects Of Virus Infection And Volatiles On Aphid Virus Vector Behavior On Sweetpotato, John Lawrence Dryburgh
Effects Of Virus Infection And Volatiles On Aphid Virus Vector Behavior On Sweetpotato, John Lawrence Dryburgh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Sweetpotato is affected by a wide variety of viruses worldwide, which can cause yield losses of up to 90%. Many of these viruses are transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner. Non-persistent viruses are acquired and transmitted within minutes, and thus conventional control, such as insecticides, are ineffective. Altering aphid movement and feeding behavior may affect the rate of virus transmission. One potential method to alter aphid behavior is volatile organic compounds (VOC), including volatiles emitted by virus infected plants, plant hormones, and commercial control agents. Aphid movement near sweetpotato fields was monitored to determine trends throughout the growing season. …

In Vitro And In Vivo (Mouse Model) Investigation Of The Efficacy Of Probiotic Bacteria Lactobacillus Casei And Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Incorporated In Tomato Juice, Bennett Atta Dzandu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Fruit and vegetable production in Ghana were estimated at 371,811 tons in 2017 with tomatoes ranked among the top four most cultivated vegetables. The majority of the production goes to waste due to spoilage and lack of processing. Probiotics have recently gained much attention owing to claims about their potential health benefits. However, the inability of certain probiotics to survive gastric conditions remain a potential setback. Tomatoes can be processed into value added products including those fortified with probiotics. Such value-added products can be used as protectant for the delivery of probiotics to improve gut health. The objective of this …

Trial Of Canakinumab, An Il-1Β Receptor Antagonist, In Patients With Inclusion Body Myositis., Michalis L Kosmidis, Dimitris Pikazis, Panayotis Vlachoyiannopoulos, Athanasios G Tzioufas, Marinos C. Dalakas
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Objective: To assess whether canakinumab, a monoclonal antibody against IL-1β approved for autoinflammatory diseases, is effective as target-specific therapy in patients with sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM).
Methods: Because in sIBM IL-1β colocalizes with amyloid precursor protein and upregulates amyloid aggregates enhancing degeneration, targeting IL-1β with canakinumab may arrest disease progression. On this basis, 5 ambulatory patients with sIBM participated in an institutional review board--approved open-labeled study with 150 mg canakinumab [4 bimonthly, then monthly subcutaneous injections] for a mean period of 15.8 months. Patients were assessed bimonthly with a manual dynamometer in 12 proximal and distal muscles and with …

Pituitary Adenoma In Pediatric And Adolescent Populations, Jie Chen, Robert E Schmidt, Sonika Dahiya
Open Access Publications
Pituitary adenomas are rare in children and adolescents and although mostly benign, they can sometimes be challenging to manage due to their locally invasive nature. In this study, we examined the clinicopathologic features of 42 pituitary adenomas in patients ≤21 years of age. The youngest patient was 8 years old (median age: 18 years), and the female-to-male ratio was 1.8:1. Five patients had recurrence after resection. There was no obvious difference between the recurrent rates in the typical (11.7%) and atypical adenomas (12.5%) based on the 2004 WHO classification. However, the recurrence rate was much higher in adenomas with an …

Minimal Access Expandable Mesh Device For Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Case Series, Ryan Moncman, Do, Michael Yoon, Md
JHN Journal
Bone-sparing techniques for transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) are promoted to help maintain spinal stability and to minimize operative time. We present a series of seven patients who underwent TLIF with use of an interbody expandable mesh device and with supplemental instrumentation. This device is deployed and filled with bone through a small cannula. All patients experienced pain relief and suffered no complications. Our results support the data from other centers which have performed similar procedures with this device.

Master's Theses
The Structured Query Language (SQL) is widely used and challenging to master. Within the context of lab exercises in an introductory database course, this thesis analyzes the student learning process and seeks to answer the question: ``Which SQL concepts, or concept combinations, trouble students the most?'' We provide comprehensive taxonomies of SQL concepts and errors, identify common areas of student misunderstanding, and investigate the student problem-solving process. We present an interactive web application used by students to complete SQL lab exercises. In addition, we analyze data collected by this application and we offer suggestions for improvement to database lab activities.
Threat Perception Alteration As An Effect Of Use-Of-Force Simulation Training, Ellyse Vandyke
Threat Perception Alteration As An Effect Of Use-Of-Force Simulation Training, Ellyse Vandyke
All NMU Master's Theses
Due to the nature of police work police officers are often placed in life threatening situations. To prepare officers for these interactions police academies employ use-of-force simulations to train relevant skills such as situational awareness and judgement. Repeated exposure to threatening situations, such as those in the use-of-force simulations, may alter the threat perception of the participant. Using self-report measures of anxiety (STAI-6 Item) and affect (PANAS), as well as respiration rate data, and short answer self-reports, the present study aims to determine if perception of threat is altered as a result of the use-of-force training, both directly after one …
Evaluating Changes In Error-Monitoring Electrocortcial Responses As An Outcome Of Attention Bias Modification Training, Jeremy Andrzejewski
Evaluating Changes In Error-Monitoring Electrocortcial Responses As An Outcome Of Attention Bias Modification Training, Jeremy Andrzejewski
All NMU Master's Theses
Anxiety disorders are among one of the most debilitating and prevalent mental disorders. Maladaptive anxiety has been associated with enhanced attention bias to threat as well as heightened error-monitoring following an erroneous response. In an effort to reduce an anxious individual’s attention bias to threat, an attention training paradigm known as attention bias modification (ABM) was developed. While ABM training has demonstrated the ability to reduce attention bias and anxiety symptoms, there are inconsistencies in the magnitude of symptom reduction and there is a lack of neuroimaging support in regards to ABM outcome. Therefore, this study evaluated the outcome of …

An Examination Of Affective Blunting In Rodents, Sigrid Crowel
All NMU Master's Theses
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. The prevalence of MDD is 12% in men and 20% in women. Antidepressant drugs are the first line of treatment in Major Depressive Disorder and other mood disorders, particularly selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Affective blunting is a potential side effect of chronic SSRI treatment, which can be defined as a diminished response to pleasurable or unpleasant stimuli, and is indicated as a marked indifference towards engagement in activities. The present study looked to examine the effects of chornic fluoxetine (0.16g/L) administration on pre-test and post-test performance of a light aversion …
