Kihansi gorge is a natural habitat to Kihansi spray toad (KST), Nectophrynoides asperginis. The toad is extinct in its natural habitat partly due to diseases. Efforts to successfully re-introduce it are primed by awareness and mitigation of prevalent diseases at the gorge. This study aimed at exploring the prevalent amphibian diseases at and around Kihansi gorge. A total of 182 individuals from Petropedetes yakusini (n = 60), Nectophrynoides tornieri (n = 60) and Leptopelis uluguruensis (n = 62) species were collected, humanely sacrificed, fixed in formalin, routinely processed, sectioned, stained with haematoxylin and eosin and analysed for diseases by histopathology. …

Some Histopathological Findings In Dead Kihansi Spray Toads In Captivity, Joshua J Malago

Raising of Kihansi spray toad (KST), Nectophrynoides asperginis, in captivity is associated with disorders that can be fatal. Since diagnosis of these disorders cannot be confirmed grossly, the current study was aimed at exploring histopathological findings in dead KSTs kept under captivity in Tanzania. Dead KSTs were immediately recovered, observed for gross changes, fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, processed routinely, and stained sections reviewed for histological changes. Observed infectious agents were strongyloides (25.3%), ciliates (1.7%), lungworms (0.6%), fungi (3.4%) and bacteria (5.1%) or mixed infections (9%) of these agents. A baseline survey which covered 349 households in Bomang’ombe and Masisiwe (Kilolo district), Kibengu and Mapanda (Mufindi district) and Chita and Chisano (Kilombero district) was conducted to identify major pests, control measures and potential impacts in Kihansi catchment area. Maize was the most predominant crop being cultivated by 55% of the total respondents in all the study districts. Pests and diseases were the major constraints to crop production, whereby cereal stem borers were the most serious pests being reported by 88.2% of respondents. Application of synthetic pesticides was the major pest control measure, being applied by 66% of the respondents. …

On the most south-western slopes of the Udzungwa Mountains in Tanzania lies Kihansi River. The river was diverted underground in 2000 to run electric turbines for electricity generation. Using mist netting, pre-diversion (in 1998 and 1999) and short term post-diversion (in 2001) effects of the river diversion on understorey birds were undertaken before and year after river diversion, respectively. Intermediate and long-term effects of river diversion on understorey birds at the same transects are non-existent. Survivorship of the Kihansi Spray Toad in the wild depends on various factors such as environment, habitat, food availability, diseases and predation. This study assessed the abundance of Afrosteles distans Linnavuori 1959 as an indicator of food availability for the Kihansi Spray Toad. Samples were collected from sprinkled (A, B, C, D, E and F) and non-sprinkled (G and H) plots in the upper spray wetland in the Kihansi gorge during the dry period in 2007, 2008, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Introduction: Due to advances in disease management, mortality rates in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) have decreased. However, mortality rates for young adults (YA) increased, and understanding of social and psychological factors is critical. The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with health care transition experiences for YA with SCD.

Method: This was a qualitative descriptive study. A 45-minute semistructured interview was conducted with 13 YA (M = 21.5 years, SD = 1.73).

Discovery Learning With Jigsaw Ii On Information Literacy And Cognitive Learning Outcomes Of High School Students, Robiatul Adawiyah, Herawati Susilo, Sri Endah Indriwati

This study aimed to determine the effect of the discovery learning model combined with Jig-saw II on the students’ information literacy and cognitive learning outcomes. The study was a quasi-experimental with a non-equivalent control group design. The subjects were 134 high school students divided into one group given discovery learning model combined with Jigsaw II and 3 control groups given discovery learning, Jigsaw II, or conventional learning model. The experiment showed that the discovery learning model combined with Jigsaw II resulting in significant differences in students’ information literacy and cognitive learning outcomes with Fvalue = 13.935 (p < 0.05) on information literacy F value = 6.527 (p < 0.05) on cognitive learning outcomes. It can be concluded that the discovery learning model combined with Jigsaw II significantly improved students’ information literacy and cognitive learning outcomes.

Research has begun to illustrate a favorable efficacy and side-effect profile for many systemic agents used in pediatric dermatological conditions (i.e. atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, scleroderma, alopecia areata, chronic spontaneous urticaria, autoimmune blistering disorders, and hidradenitis suppurativa) despite not having extensive randomized clinical trials. The purpose of this article is to summarize the available data on the treatment regiments, safety, and efficacy of systemic immunosuppressants, including the newer biologics, focusing on the most up-to-date systematic reviews or randomized clinical trials. Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a malignant, slow growing, and locally invasive skin tumor. Advanced and neglected BCC may invade adjacent structures. The Kihansi Spray Toad (Nectophrynoides asperginis) is considered to be extinct in the wild. Captive breeding populations exist in Bronx and Toledo zoos in USA and in two captive breeding facilities in Tanzania. Efforts to reintroduce the species back to its natural habitat at Kihansi Gorge wetlands have become a long process. This study aims to obtain secondary metabolites that have antibacterial activity from bacteria endophytic of ascidian Pycnoclavella diminuta collected from the coast of Bitung, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The research was started with screening antibacterial activity of six bacteria isolated from P. diminuta. The active bacteria were selected for identification using standard biological molecular method and further fermentation to produce secondary metabolites. The flavonoids derived from Eugenia polyantha leaves were characterized by rapid and low cost approach. The aim of this research is to characterize secondary metabolite profile of flavonoids in the n-butanol fraction of E. polyantha using thin layer chromatography and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The n-butanol fraction was separated by using silica gel 60 GF254 as the stationary phase; chloroform: ethanol: glacial acetic acid (9.4: 0.5: 0.1) as the mobile phase; and visualized by using UV light 366 nm. However, the cytotoxicity of stem of Pycnarrhena cauliflora on human breast cancer cell line T47D through an apoptosis induction has not been proven yet. National standard agency of Indonesia has set the quality standard of shark liver oil through the Indonesian national standard which consists of sensory test, moisture content, free fatty acid as well as squalene concentration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate quality of shark liver oil capsule on market. As many as 6 samples were tested for the quality in accordance to SNI through organoleptic test (< 7), moisture content (max 0.3%), free fatty acid content (max 1.5%) and squalene concentration (min 70%). The results showed that the level of squalene in all samples do not meet the standard requirement, however all samples meet the free fatty acid content requirements. One sample does not fit the standard criteria in the term of organoleptic test and moisture content.

Acid fast bacilli (AFB) sputum microscopy is used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) and to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-tuberculosis drugs in TB eradication program. The AFB sputum microscopy should be performed before treatment, two months after intensive phase and four months after advance phase treatment. Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

Over 80% of the Mid-Continent Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) Population (MCP), estimated at over 660,000 individuals, stops in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) during spring migration from mid-February through mid-April. Research suggests that the MCP may be shifting its distribution spatially and temporally within the CPRV. From 2002 to 2017, we conducted weekly aerial surveys of Sandhill Cranes staging in the CPRV to examine temporal and spatial trends in their abundance and distribution.
