Space Telescope And Optical Reverberation Mapping Project. Viii. Time Variability Of Emission And Absorption In Ngc5548 Based On Modeling The Ultraviolet Spectrum, Dirk Grupe
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6 month reverberation mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Lyα and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The …

Pancreatic Cystic Neoplasms (Pcn), Assanee Tongyoo
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
The pancreatic cystic lesions are more frequently detected from commonly-used cross-sectional imaging studies. They usually are incidental finding without any symptoms. There are several types of neoplastic pancreatic cyst with different natural history and management. Either radiologic or endoscopic modalities are mentioned to be helpful in differentiating type of cyst. Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) and mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) are mucinous cysts harboring risk of malignancy. Any lesions with high-risk features should be identified and resected to prevent invasive cancer. However, malignancy can be found in remnant of pancreas after IPMN resected, long-term follow-up imaging is recommended. Serous cystic …
Hemodialysis Access For Chronic Renal Failure, Kanoklada Srikuea
Hemodialysis Access For Chronic Renal Failure, Kanoklada Srikuea
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
The well-functioning vascular access (VA) is the mainstay to perform an efficient hemodialysis. There are three types of vascular access that consist of arteriovenous fistula, arteriovenous graft and central venous catheters. Many guidelines from different countries recommend the fistula first and the catheter late approach because fistula has high patency rates, longevity and lowest comorbidity and mortality. Also, the upper extremity access should be preferred than lower extremity access. However, the VA- related outcomes may be optimized by considering individual patient characteristic, comorbidity and life expectancy. The good team should include a nephrologist, vascular surgeon and dialysis nurse team. Early …

An Update On The Management Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis: Surgical Perspective, Tawan Imvised
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common of neonatal surgical emergency. The initial signs are nonspecific and often indistinguishable from other neonatal problems. Abdominal radiography (AR) is the first modality imaging for diagnosis NEC and remains as the standard modality since the Bell staging system was developed. Ultrasonography (US) playing an increasing role in NEC. There is the potential for US to bridge the lack of sensitivity of AR for NEC. Understanding the influence of the pathophysiological dynamic of NEC and its variation with gestational age on AR or US findings is important to distinguish NEC from NEC-like conditions. Surgical …

Customization Of Aneurysm Scaffold Geometries For In Vitro Tissue-Engineered Blood Vessel Mimics To Use As Models For Neurovascular Device Testing, Camille D. Villadolid
Customization Of Aneurysm Scaffold Geometries For In Vitro Tissue-Engineered Blood Vessel Mimics To Use As Models For Neurovascular Device Testing, Camille D. Villadolid
Master's Theses
Cerebral aneurysms occur due to the ballooning of blood vessels in the brain. Rupture of aneurysms can cause a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which, if not fatal, can cause permanent neurologic deficits. Minimally invasive neurovascular devices, such as embolization coils and flow diverters, are methods of treatment utilized to prevent aneurysm rupture. The rapidly growing market for neurovascular devices necessitates the development of accurate aneurysm models for preclinical testing. In vivo models, such as the rabbit elastase model, are commonly chosen for preclinical device testing; however, these studies are expensive, and aneurysm geometries are difficult to control and often do not replicate …

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Discussion boards are tools to afford student interaction and engagement in online courses, but students often have negative attitudes toward discussion boards. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an intervention informing students of the usefulness of online discussion boards affected their attitudes toward discussion boards. The instructor randomly assigned students (N = 65) to view a video and answer an essay question on either the benefits of discussion boards (treatment) or how discussion boards were graded (control). Students in the treatment condition indicated discussion boards as being more useful than did students in the control condition, p …

The Nopp140 Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster Displays Length Polymorphisms In Its Large Repetitive Second Exon, Patrick J. Dimario, Sonu Shrestha Baral
Faculty Publications
Nopp140, often called the nucleolar and Cajal body phosphoprotein (NOLC1), is an evolutionarily conserved chaperone for the transcription and processing of rRNA during ribosome subunit assembly. Metazoan Nopp140 contains an amino terminal LisH dimerization domain and a highly conserved carboxyl domain. A large central domain consists of alternating basic and acidic motifs of low sequence complexity. Orthologous versions of Nopp140 contain variable numbers of repeating basic-acidic units. While vertebrate Nopp140 genes use multiple exons to encode the central domain, the Nopp140 gene in Drosophila uses exclusively exon 2 to encode the central domain. Here, we define three overlapping repeat sequence …

© 2019 by the authors. We conducted biophysical simulations using MapShed to determine the effects of adopting best management practices (BMPs) to reduce nutrients and sediment pollution in a watershed dominated by poultry production in the Saline Bayou Watershed, Louisiana, USA. The reduction of three water pollutants, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment from adopting different BMPs were assessed using a linear programming model with the cost minimization objective. We considered three weather scenarios (dry, normal, and wet) and BMP parameter efficiencies obtained from linear regression models. Optimization results showed that nutrient management and agricultural land retirement reduced most of the phosphorus …

Identifying Genetic Markers For A Range Of Phylogenetic Utility–From Species To Family Level, Bokyung Choi, Michael D. Crisp, Lyn G. Cook, Karen Meusemann, Robert D. Edwards, Alicia Toon, Carsten Kulheim
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Resolving the phylogenetic relationships of closely related species using a small set of loci is challenging as sufficient information may not be captured from a limited sample of the genome. Relying on few loci can also be problematic when conflict between gene-trees arises from incomplete lineage sorting and/or ongoing hybridization, problems especially likely in recently diverged lineages. Here, we developed a method using limited genomic resources that allows identification of many low copy candidate loci from across the nuclear and chloroplast genomes, design probes for target capture and sequence the captured loci. To validate our method we present data from …

Severity Of Chest Pain Among Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients With Diagonal Branch Vessel Disease: A Pilot Study, Nasir Rahman, Azmina Artani, Farhala Mari Baloch, Bilal Hussain
Section of Cardiology
Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients present with variable clinical manifestations such as shortness of breath, nausea, etc. among which chest pain is the most common. Previous studies have reported that the clinical presentation of AMI patients with branch vessel disease is indistinguishable from epicardial coronary vessel disease. However, our experience suggests patients with branch vessel disease experience severe chest pain, especially those with a diagonal branch. Therefore, we aim to study the association of chest pain severity with isolated diagonal branch vessel disease as a culprit vessel in AMI patients.
Methods: It is a retrospective case-control design, where 10 …

© 2019 The Author(s). The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, forms reefs that provide critical services to the surrounding ecosystem. These reefs are at risk from climate change, in part because altered rainfall patterns may amplify local fluctuations in salinity, impacting oyster recruitment, survival, and growth. As in other marine organisms, warming water temperatures might interact with these changes in salinity to synergistically influence oyster physiology. In this study, we used comparative transcriptomics, measurements of physiology, and a field assessment to investigate what phenotypic changes C. virginica uses to cope with combined temperature and salinity stress in the Gulf of Mexico. …

Light-Induced Release Of Nitric Oxide From The Nitric Oxide-Bound Cdgsh-Type [2fe–2s] Clusters In Mitochondrial Protein Miner2, Yiming Wang, Jeonghoon Lee, Huangen Ding
Faculty Publications
© 2019 Elsevier Inc. Human mitochondrial matrix protein Miner2 hosts two [2Fe–2S] clusters via two CDGSH (Cys-Asp-Gly-Ser-His) motifs. Unlike other iron-sulfur clusters in proteins, the reduced CDGSH-type [2Fe–2S] clusters in Miner2 are able to bind nitric oxide (NO) and form stable NO-bound [2Fe–2S] clusters without disruption of the clusters. Here we report that the NO-bound Miner2 [2Fe–2S] clusters can quickly release NO upon the visible light excitation. The UV–visible and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements show that the NO-bound Miner2 [2Fe–2S] clusters are converted to the reduced Miner2 [2Fe–2S] clusters upon the light excitation under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that NO …

Elevated blood pressure (BP), a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, is influenced by both genetic and lifestyle factors. Cigarette smoking is one such lifestyle factor. Across five ancestries, we performed a genome-wide gene-smoking interaction study of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and pulse pressure (PP) in 129 913 individuals in stage 1 and follow-up analysis in 480 178 additional individuals in stage 2. We report here 136 loci significantly associated with MAP and/or PP. Of these, 61 were previously published through main-effect analysis of BP traits, 37 were recently reported by us for systolic BP and/or diastolic BP through …

The evolution of Neotropical birds of open landscapes remains largely unstudied. We investigate the diversification and biogeography of a group of Neotropical obligate grassland birds (Anthus: Motacillidae). We use a multilocus phylogeny of 22 taxa of Anthus to test the hypothesis that these birds radiated contemporaneously with the development of grasslands in South America. We employ the R package DDD to analyze the dynamics of Anthus diversification across time in Neotropical grasslands, explicitly testing for shifts in dynamics associated with the Miocene development of grasslands, the putative Pleistocene expansion of arid lowland biomes, and Pleistocene sundering of Andean highland grasslands. …

The estuaries of coastal Louisiana overwinter a continentally significant proportion of Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis; colloquially, “bluebills”), a migratory bird species of conservation concern since population declines began in the 1980s. Thirty-eight years of aerial waterfowl surveys of Lake Pontchartrain—an oligohaline estuarine lagoon in southeast Louisiana—show that scaup abundance fluctuates between 0 and 1,194,907 birds, though the mechanisms driving this variation are unknown. Previous studies have shown that scaup feed primarily on mollusks, and so changes in the benthic prey community have the potential to strongly influence scaup dynamics on the Lake. Benthic communities are in turn shaped by both …

The Scientific Romances Of Jules Verne And H.G. Wells: Imperialism Disguised As Progress In The Early Days Of Science Fiction, Timothy Ferris
Theses and Dissertations
Frequently in their respective oeuvres, Verne and Wells write in a rhetoric of conquest that almost always translates to discovering a more efficient means of taming wild, non-European environments. These goals extend not only to the lands that their protagonists explore, but also to human beings and other life that may populate them. Indeed, the underlying focus—the one that is masked behind the thrill and adventure of both Wells and Verne—is none other than the march of progress as understood by middle-class Europeans in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Progress can produce positivistic optimism, and it can also …
