An Investigative Study Of Information Literacy Instruction And Learning Activities Of Undergraduate Students In A Federal University Of Technology, Nigeria, Kayode Abel Afolabi Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information is a very useful asset that is indispensable in the day-to-day operations of human beings. There is the need for people to be aware of the importance of information and how to make use of it in all their endeavours. Thus, inability of students to identify, locate, evaluate and make use of information whenever the need arises for it has necessitated the need to conduct a study on information literacy instruction and undergraduate learning activities. The study was carried out among the undergraduate students of Federal University of Technology, Akure and a descriptive survey technique was employed as research …

Enzyme Engineering XXV

Improvements in the catalytic activity, substrate specificity or enantioselectivity of enzymes are traditionally achieved by modification of enzymes’ active sites. We have recently proposed that the enzyme engineering endeavors should target both the active sites and the access tunnels/channels [1,2]. Using the model enzymes haloalkane dehalogenases, we have demonstrated that engineering of access tunnels provides enzymes with significantly improved catalytic properties [3] and stability [4]. User-friendly software tools Caver [5], Caver Analyst [6], CaverDock [7] and Caver Web [8], have been developed for the computational design of protein tunnels/channels; FireProt [9] and HotSpot Wizard [10] for automated design of stabilizing …

Laser Irradiation Of Mung Bean (Vigna Radiata L.) At Two Wavelengths For Enhanced Seedling Development, Rayno Vic B. Janayon, Raphael A. Guerrero

Physics Faculty Publications

Two laser sources operating at wavelengths of 632.8 nm (He-Ne) and 488 nm (Ar+

) are used in examining the effects of coherent, low-power, continuous wave exposure on the development of Vigna radiata L. Presowing laser irradiation of seeds leads to an improvement of mung bean seedling characteristics, with increased values of hypocotyl length (an increase of up to 22.5%), root length (an increase of up to 28.8%), and seedling mass (a maximum increase of 29.2%). Measured parameters between seedlings from laser-irradiated seeds and from control samples are statistically different at a level of significance equal to 0.05. For both …

Closed-Form Probability Distribution Of Number Of Infections At A Given Time In A Stochastic Sis Epidemic Model, Olusegun M. Otunuga

Mathematics Faculty Research

We study the effects of external fluctuations in the transmission rate of certain diseases and how these affect the distribution of the number of infected individuals over time. To do this, we introduce random noise in the transmission rate in a deterministic SIS model and study how the number of infections changes over time. The objective of this work is to derive and analyze the closed form probability distribution of the number of infections at a given time in the resulting stochastic SIS epidemic model. Using the Fokker-Planck equation, we reduce the differential equation governing the number of infections to …

The Huntingtin Inclusion Is A Dynamic Phase-Separated Compartment, Fahmida Aktar, Chakkapong Burudpakdee, Mercedes Polanco, Sen Pei, Theresa C. Swayne, Peter N. Lipke, Lesley Emtage

Publications and Research

Inclusions of disordered protein are a characteristic feature of most neurodegenerative diseases, including Huntington’s disease. Huntington’s disease is caused by expansion of a polyglutamine tract in the huntingtin protein; mutant huntingtin protein (mHtt) is unstable and accumulates in large intracellular inclusions both in affected individuals and when expressed in eukaryotic cells. Using mHtt-GFP expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we find that mHtt-GFP inclusions are dynamic, mobile, gel-like structures that concentrate mHtt together with the disaggregase Hsp104. Although inclusions may associate with the vacuolar membrane, the association is reversible and we find that inclusions of mHtt in S. cerevisiae are not taken …

The doctoral advisor, typically the principal investigator (PI), is often characterized as a singular or primary mentor who guides students using a cognitive apprenticeship model. Alternatively, the cascading mentorship model describes the members of laboratories or research groups receiving mentorship from more senior laboratory members and providing it to more junior members (i.e., PIs mentor postdocs, postdocs mentor senior graduate students, senior students mentor junior students, etc.). Here we show that PIs laboratory and mentoring activities do not significantly predict students skill development trajectories, but the engagement of postdocs and senior graduate students in laboratory interactions do. We found that …

Truscott, Julia C. Dunn, Iain Gardiner, Judd L. Walson, Steven A. Williams, D. Timothy J. Littlewood

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: The strategy of pooling stool specimens has been extensively used in the field of parasitology in order to facilitate the screening of large numbers of samples whilst minimizing the prohibitive cost of single sample analysis. The aim of this study was to develop a standardized reproducible pooling protocol for stool samples, validated between two different laboratories, without jeopardizing the sensitivity of the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays employed for the detection of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). Two distinct experimental phases were recruited. First, the sensitivity and specificity of the established protocol was assessed by real-time PCR for each one …

Chromatin Digestion By The Chemotherapeutic Agent Bleomycin Produces Nucleosome And Transcription Factor Footprinting Patterns Similar To Micrococcal Nuclease, Joshua Michael Stolz Sep 2019

Chromatin Digestion By The Chemotherapeutic Agent Bleomycin Produces Nucleosome And Transcription Factor Footprinting Patterns Similar To Micrococcal Nuclease, Joshua Michael Stolz

Theses and Dissertations

Bleomycin (BLM), a glycopeptide antibiotic commonly used in chemotherapeutic treatments, has been shown to produce single and double stranded DNA breaks. Subsequent analysis of DNA fragmentation patterns has demonstrated preferential digestion of chromatin in the TSS of active genes and the ability to produce nucleosome-sized fragments within intact chromatin. Nucleosome positioning plays a critical role in the regulation of gene activation. Currently, micrococcal nuclease (MNase) is used as the standard for mapping the position of nucleosomes in the genome. In order to identify whether BLM can be used as an effective nucleosome-mapping agent, BLM was used to digest chromatin in …

Kick Boxing Coaching System, Wentian Chen Sep 2019

Kick Boxing Coaching System, Wentian Chen

Theses

There are three key considerations when training for kickboxing; correct body position, motivation, and how to achieve different training goals. Training gear available on the market does not provide enough relevant feedback to the user to validate the effectiveness of their training. I will design a coaching system for recreational and avid kick boxers that records user input while also providing an interactive experience that tracks training in a more meaningful way. This is a project focused on user experience and product testing. User Experience requires me to study the response of the human body when it is hit, and …

Effectiveness Of Picturerx™ On Perceived Medication Adherence In The Independently Living Older Adults, Nicole Pascarella, Rachel Blansett Sep 2019

Effectiveness Of Picturerx™ On Perceived Medication Adherence In The Independently Living Older Adults, Nicole Pascarella, Rachel Blansett

DNP and Student Works

Medication adherence refers to the concept that at least 80% of a prescribed medication therapy including dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment is followed (World Health Organization, 2017). Failure to adhere to one's prescribed medication regimen is a serious issue that affects both the patient and the entire health care system. Medication non-adherence is especially dangerous for older adults due to their increased risk for multiple comorbidities, polypharmacy, and related adverse effects. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2017), medication non-adherence is the cause of approximately 125,000 deaths and 10% of hospitalizations every year, and it costs the health …
