A Comparison Of Multi-Attribute Utility Theory, The Analytic Hierarchy Process, The Analytic Network Process, And New Hybrid Approaches For A Case Study Involving Radon, Jesse Ray Toepfer

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the use of three new combinational hybrid approaches to solve a rational decision problem. Even though Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and the Analytic Network Process (ANP), are all long established theories, their practical applications continue to grow and generate new knowledge. As a case study approach, there exists a knowledge gap concerning the use of these MCDM methods in the area of environmental remediation, and more especially, in situations that involve radioactive materials. From this, and as borne out by the literature review discussed herein, a problem statement is thus …

Gender Differences: A Result Of Differences In The Brain Or Socialization?, Courtney Storms Sep 2019

Gender Differences: A Result Of Differences In The Brain Or Socialization?, Courtney Storms

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

There are obvious differences between males and females observed in society; aside from physical features, gender differences are present from infancy through adulthood in virtually all areas from childhood play to occupational choices. It is heavily debated as to whether these gender differences are a result of socialization or a result of differences between the male and female brain. This paper will explore both sides of the controversy, outlining the evidence offered by Cordelia Fine and Simon Baron-Cohen in their books ”Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference” and ”The Essential Difference: Male and Female Brains …

Body Brokerage: Inside The Trafficking Of Human Materials, Michelle Prizzi Sep 2019

Body Brokerage: Inside The Trafficking Of Human Materials, Michelle Prizzi

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 2011 Scott Carney, anthropologist and investigative journalist, introduced the public to the horrifying underworld of the Red Market, the illegal trade of human materials. Carney’s book The Red Market: On the Trail of the World’s Organ Brokers, Bone Thieves, Blood Farmers, and Child Traffickers (2011) deduces through ethnographic experiences that “[r]ed markets are the product of contradictions, aris[ing] when social taboos surrounding the human body collide with the individual urge to live a long, happy life” (5). The web behind this twisted niche of the black market is expansive and has a hold in many countries worldwide including the …

Ecological Indicators Of Mammal Exposure To Ebolavirus, John Paul Schmidt, Sean Maher, John M. Drake, Tao Huang, Maxwell J. Farrell, Barbara A. Han Sep 2019

Ecological Indicators Of Mammal Exposure To Ebolavirus, John Paul Schmidt, Sean Maher, John M. Drake, Tao Huang, Maxwell J. Farrell, Barbara A. Han

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Much of the basic ecology of Ebolavirus remains unresolved despite accumulating disease outbreaks, viral strains and evidence of animal hosts. Because human Ebolavirus epidemics have been linked to contact with wild mammals other than bats, traits shared by species that have been infected by Ebolavirus and their phylogenetic distribution could suggest ecological mechanisms contributing to human Ebolavirus spillovers. We compiled data on Ebolavirus exposure in mammals and corresponding data on life-history traits, movement, and diet, and used boosted regression trees (BRT) to identify predictors of exposure and infection for 119 species (hereafter hosts). Mapping the phylogenetic distribution of presumptive Ebolavirus …

Inclusion Of Enclosed Hydration Effects In The Binding Free Energy Estimation Of Dopamine D3 Receptor Complexes, Rajat Kumar Pal, Satishkumar Gadhiya, Steven Ramsey, Pierpaolo Cordone, Lauren Wickstrom, Wayne W. Harding, Tom Kurtzman, Emilio Gallicchio

Publications and Research

Confined hydration and conformational flexibility are some of the challenges encountered for the rational design of selective antagonists of G-protein coupled receptors. We present a set of C3-substituted (-) -stepholidine derivatives as potent binders of the dopamine D3 receptor. The compounds are characterized biochemically, as well as by computer modeling using a novel molecular dynamics-based alchemical binding free energy approach which incorporates the effect of the displacement of enclosed water molecules from the binding site. The free energy of displacement of specific hydration sites is obtained using the Hydration Site Analysis method with explicit solvation. This work underscores the critical role of confined …

Shelf Inputs And Lateral Transport Of Mn, Co, And Ce In The Western North Pacific Ocean, Peter L. Morton, William M. Landing, Alan M. Shiller, Thomas D. Kelly, Michael Bizimis, John R. Donat, Eric H. De Carlo, Joseph Shacat

Faculty Publications

The margin of the western North Pacific Ocean releases redox-active elements like Mn, Co, and Ce into the water column to undergo further transformation through oxide formation, scavenging, and reductive dissolution. Near the margin, the upper ocean waters enriched in these elements are characterized by high dissolved oxygen, low salinity, and low temperature, and are a source of the North Pacific Intermediate Water. High dissolved concentrations are observed across the Western Subarctic Gyre, with a rapid decrease in concentrations away from the margin and across the subarctic-subtropical front. The particulate concentrations of Mn, Co, and Ce are also high in …

Music Therapy’S Role In The Education System, Madison Riley, Tori L. Colson, Moriah Smothers

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

Music therapy is a lesser-known and used related service, yet it provides significant benefits to students that have language, behavioral, and social needs. This article reviews the literature on music therapy, discusses its historical and theoretical roots, and examines its use in educational settings. Special attention is given to therapeutic practices that are geared toward students on the autism spectrum because their social and communication needs are often a good fit for music therapy practices. Recommendations on using music therapy in special and general education classrooms are also made. Additionally, recommendations for including music therapy content in teacher preparation programs …

The doctoral advisor—typically the principal investigator (PI)—is often characterized as a singular or primary mentor who guides students using a cognitive apprenticeship model. Alternatively, the “cascading mentorship” model describes the members of laboratories or research groups receiving mentorship from more senior laboratory members and providing it to more junior members (i.e., PIs mentor postdocs, postdocs mentor senior graduate students, senior students mentor junior students, etc.). Here we show that PIs’ laboratory and mentoring activities do not significantly predict students’ skill development trajectories, but the engagement of postdocs and senior graduate students in laboratory interactions do. We found that the cascading …

Project Based Learning (PjBL) teaches many important strategies to train various life skills to face the challenges of 21st century life, one of which is creative thinking. This quasi experiment research aims to determine the effect of project-based learning on the material of growth and development in high school students by using simple hydroponic cultivation techniques on students’ creative thinking skills. The research instrument was in the form of pre test and post test questions given to the experimental class and the control class. Data analysis with independent t-test shows the results of p value < α (α = 0.05), which proves that the research hypothesis is accepted, so it can be concluded that simple hydroponic project-based learning can improve students’ creative thinking skills.

Temporal Changes In Abundance–Occupancy Relationships Over 40 Years, Lisa L. Manne, Richard R. Veit Sep 2019

Temporal Changes In Abundance–Occupancy Relationships Over 40 Years, Lisa L. Manne, Richard R. Veit

Publications and Research

  1. Abundance–occupancy (A–O) relationships are widely documented for many organismal groups and regions, and have been used to gain an understanding of regional population and community trends. Monitoring changes in abundance and occupancy over time may be what is required to document changes in conservation status and needs for some species, communities, or areas.
  2. We hypothesize that if there is a higher proportion of declining species in one group of species compared with another (e.g., migratory species vs. permanent residents), then a consequence of that difference will be vastly different abundance–occupancy relationships. If this difference persists through time, then the resulting …
