Improving Paper-Based Microfluidic Mixing With The Incorporation Of Flow Disrupting Structures, Hannah C. Green
Improving Paper-Based Microfluidic Mixing With The Incorporation Of Flow Disrupting Structures, Hannah C. Green
Master's Theses
Paper-based microfluidic devices provide a light-weight, cost effective platform for diagnostic and analytical testing. The goal of this project is to enhance paper-based microfluidic mixing by incorporating fluid flow disrupting structures (referred to here as rib bones) into the microdevice design to expand the analytical capabilities of paperbased microfluidic devices. The devices are fabricated on Whatman CHR-1 chromatography paper. The devices are designed in SolidWorks and printed using a solid ink printer (ColorQube 8580). The wax is penetrated into the paper to create hydrophobic barrier regions by heating in a convection oven until the wax is fully penetrated. The parameters …

Adaptive Feature Engineering Modeling For Ultrasound Image Classification For Decision Support, Hatwib Mugasa
Adaptive Feature Engineering Modeling For Ultrasound Image Classification For Decision Support, Hatwib Mugasa
Doctoral Dissertations
Ultrasonography is considered a relatively safe option for the diagnosis of benign and malignant cancer lesions due to the low-energy sound waves used. However, the visual interpretation of the ultrasound images is time-consuming and usually has high false alerts due to speckle noise. Improved methods of collection image-based data have been proposed to reduce noise in the images; however, this has proved not to solve the problem due to the complex nature of images and the exponential growth of biomedical datasets. Secondly, the target class in real-world biomedical datasets, that is the focus of interest of a biopsy, is usually …
Radical Feminist Nuns: Spiritual Activism, Catholicism, And The Power Of (Sister)Hood, Emily Lauletta
Radical Feminist Nuns: Spiritual Activism, Catholicism, And The Power Of (Sister)Hood, Emily Lauletta
Gender & Women’s Studies Student Scholarship
Based on the readings of authors such as Gloria Anzaldúa, AnaLouise Keating, Leela Fernandes, and others, throughout the course of this semester, I have been able to develop my own definition of spiritual activism that I believe integrates the theories and concepts that these scholars have written about with my own experiences. Having done both intensive self-study and academic research, I have come to understand that spiritual activism is the act of transforming one’s self through personal and communal reflection in order to work towards transforming the world and set it on a pathway towards equity and social justice. Based …
The Changing Role Of Rodenticides And Their Alternatives In The Management Of Commensal Rodents, Gary Witmer
The Changing Role Of Rodenticides And Their Alternatives In The Management Of Commensal Rodents, Gary Witmer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Rodents cause substantial damage and losses of foodstuffs around the world. They also transmit many diseases to humans and livestock. While various methods are used to reduce damage caused by rodents, rodenticides remain an important tool in the toolbox. However, like all tools, rodenticides have advantages and disadvantages. Several considerations are shaping the future of rodenticide use, including manufacturing and registration costs, concern about toxicity levels and nontarget animal hazards, potential hazards to children, reduced effectiveness of some formulations, and humaneness to the targeted rodents. Many of these disadvantages apply to anticoagulant rodenticides, and their use is being more restricted …

Beyond Light, Medium, And Dark: Diversity And Inclusivity In The Makeup And Beauty Industries, Adrienne Werle
Beyond Light, Medium, And Dark: Diversity And Inclusivity In The Makeup And Beauty Industries, Adrienne Werle
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The goal of this project is to promote diversity within beauty and continue the push for representation and inclusivity. I conducted research on the history of makeup in America during the 1900s and studied how the makeup industry has evolved into what it is today. Rihanna’s launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017 was seen as the start of a new era, challenging beauty brands to be more inclusive. As Fenty created a new industry standard of 40 shades, many other brands followed suit. I then compared my findings with the experiences of real women in my community. I interviewed 10 …

Availability And Quality Of Resources And Their Effect On Continuance To Higher Education, Tabitha Lenhart
Availability And Quality Of Resources And Their Effect On Continuance To Higher Education, Tabitha Lenhart
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This project is a research proposal. The main purpose of this proposal is to determine if resources have an effect on the number of students who go on to higher educations after high school. Many studies have been done to see what resources effect students achievement levels. This proposed study looks to determine which resources have the greatest effect on students confidence and preparedness to go on to higher education. Once this is discovered, certain schools would receive extra funding to go towards these resources and survey the students and teachers again to see if there is an increase of …

Testing Differences In Vital Lung Capacity Between Long-Term Cigarette Smokers, Vapers, And Non-Smokers, Madison Rea, Makayla Davis, Tatyana Green, Megan Curry
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Our research group sampled 15 subjects lungs in a semester-long project. Will there be a significant difference between the lung capacity and lung volume of cigarette smokers, vapers, and non-smokers? It is hypothesized that the lung capacity and lung volume of cigarette smokers and vapers should be relatively equal. Additionally, it is hypothesized that the non-smokers’ lung capacity and lung volume should be significantly higher relative to cigarette smokers and vapers.

The Prisoner's Dementia: Ethical And Legal Issues Regarding Dementia And Healthcare In Prison, David M. N. Garavito
The Prisoner's Dementia: Ethical And Legal Issues Regarding Dementia And Healthcare In Prison, David M. N. Garavito
Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy
The general population has been aging, leading to greater prevalence of age-related diseases such as dementia. However, given their environment and history with injury and illness, inmates provide a unique population that holds potentially the greatest risk for dementia. Despite this, few prisons provide the resources necessary to diagnose and care for those individuals who have dementia. The Supreme Court, in Estelle v. Gamble and its progeny, have set an extremely low standard for providing care for inmates, and legislation has protected prisons from lawsuits over lack of care for emotional or mental illnesses and injuries without physical manifestation. Unless …

Application Of Halloysite Nanotubes In Bone Disease Remediation And Bone Regeneration, Yangyang Luo
Doctoral Dissertations
Customized patient therapy has been a major research focus in recent years. There are two research fields that have made a significant contribution to realizing individualized-based treatment: targeted drug delivery and three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. With benefit from the advances in nanotechnology and biomaterial science, various drug delivery systems have been established to provide precise control of therapeutic agents release in time and space. The emergence of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology enables the fabrication of complicated structures that effectively mimic native tissues and makes it possible to print patient-specific implants. My dissertation research used a clay nanoparticle, halloysite, to develop …
