Spatial Upscaling Of Forest Response To Drought, Wei Fang, Peipei Xu, Tao Zhao, Xiang Zhao, Hui Luo, George Hendrey, Chuixiang Yi

Publications and Research

We have integrated the observational capability of satellite remote sensing with plot-scale tree ring data to up-scale the evaluation of forest responses to drought. Satellite data, such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), can provide a spatially continuous measure with limited temporal coverage, while tree Ring Width Index (RWI) provides accurate assessment with much longer time series local scales. Here, we explored the relationship between RWI and NDVI of three dominant species in the Southwestern United States (SWUS), and predicted RWI spatial distribution from 2001 to 2017 based on MODIS 1-km resolution NDVI data with stringent quality control. We detected …

Spatial Patterns Of Arctic Sponge Ground Fauna And Demersal Fish Are Detectable In Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (Auv) Imagery, H.K. Meyer, E.M. Roberts, H.T. Rapp, Andrew J. Davies

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Deep-sea sponge grounds are important habitats that provide several ecosystem services, yet relatively little is known about their distribution and ecology. While most surveys have focused on the broad-scale distribution patterns of sponge grounds (100s–1000s m), only rarely have the finer-scale (<10 m) spatial distribution patterns of the primary organisms been studied. In this study, the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Hugin 1000 was used to map an area of an arctic sponge ground located on the summit of the Schulz Bank (Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge), with the aim of detecting small-scale spatial patterns produced by the dominant megafauna. Using low-light cameras to construct a photomosaic comprising of 9,953 images and a virtual quadrat spatial sampling approach, density hotspots of …

Recently, porcine acellular dermal matrix (Mucoderm®) has become an alternative to connective tissue autografts in periodontal surgery. For the experimental purpose of using an alternative material to autologous connective tissue we selected a case of keratinized gingival augmentation. The expected results had been disappointing, which led us to ask the problem of the evolution in situ of this matrix and the reality of its bio-integration.We investigated in vivo human biopsy taken from patient who underwent xenogenic dermal transplant. Biopsy obtained at 11 weeks post-tissue transplantand stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin demonstrated the presence of numerous inflammatory cells in the connective gingival tissue …

Spread Of Domestic Animals Across Neolithic Western Anatolia: New Stable Isotope Evidence From Ugurlu Höyük, The Island Of Gökçeada, Turkey, Suzanne E. Pilaar Birch, Levent Atici, Burcin Erdogu

Anthropology Faculty Research

The origins of agriculture in Southwest Asia over 10,000 years ago and its subsequent spread into Europe during the Neolithic have been the focus of much archaeological research over the past several decades. Increasingly more sophisticated analytical techniques have allowed for better understanding of the complex interactions that occurred amongst humans, animals, and their environments during this transition. The Aegean Islands are critically situated where Anatolia and the mainland Greece meet, making the region pivotal for understanding the movement of the Neolithic into Europe. Located on the largest Turkish Aegean island of Gökçeada, the site of Uğurlu Höyük dates to …

Dose Effects Of Recombinant Adenovirus Immunization In Rodents, Eric A. Weaver Oct 2019

Dose Effects Of Recombinant Adenovirus Immunization In Rodents, Eric A. Weaver

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Recombinant adenovirus type 5 (rAd) has been used as a vaccine platform against many infectious diseases and has been shown to be an effective vaccine vector. The dose of the vaccine varies significantly from study to study, making it very diffcult to compare immune responses and vaccine effcacy. This study determined the immune correlates induced by serial dilutions of rAd vaccines delivered intramuscularly (IM) and intranasally (IN) to mice and rats. When immunized IM, mice had substantially higher antibody responses at the higher vaccine doses, whereas, the IN immunized mice showed a lower response to the higher rAd vaccine doses. …

Iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) are two essential mineral nutrients whose acquisition by plants presents important environmental and economic implications. Both elements are abundant in most soils but scarcely available to plants. To prevent Fe or P deficiency dicot plants initiate morphological and physiological responses in their roots aimed to specifically acquire these elements. The existence of common signals in Fe and P deficiency pathways suggests the signaling factors must act in conjunction with distinct nutrient-specific signals in order to confer tolerance to each deficiency. …

Nanoaperture Fabrication Via Colloidal Lithography For Single Molecule Fluorescence Analysis, Ryan M. Jamiolkowski, Kevin Y. Chen, Shane A. Fiorenza, Alyssa M. Tate, Shawn H. Pfeil, Yale E. Goldman

Physics & Engineering Faculty Publications

In single molecule fluorescence studies, background emission from labeled substrates often restricts their concentrations to non-physiological nanomolar values. One approach to address this challenge is the use of zero-mode waveguides (ZMWs), nanoscale holes in a thin metal film that physically and optically confine the observation volume allowing much higher concentrations of fluorescent substrates. Standard fabrication of ZMWs utilizes slow and costly E-beam nano-lithography. Herein, ZMWs are made using a self-assembled mask of polystyrene microspheres, enabling fabrication of thousands of ZMWs in parallel without sophisticated equipment. Polystyrene 1 mu m dia. microbeads self-assemble on a glass slide into a hexagonal array, …

There is limited research documenting current efforts to support preservice teachers to use the universal design for learning (UDL) framework in authentic teaching experiences. To increase knowledge on the effects of preparing preservice teachers to incorporate the UDL framework, researchers examined the effects a UDL professional development seminar that was delivered during the student teaching phase had on eight teacher candidates during their K–12 placement. Using a concurrent triangulation mixed-method design, researchers examined lesson plans, video footage of teaching, teacher candidate reflections on their teaching sample, and university supervisor measures of the same sample before and after the UDL seminar. …

Turn-On Near-Infrared Fluorescent Sensors For Selective Monitoring Of Kinase Activity, Gerard Thomas Ducharme Oct 2019

Turn-On Near-Infrared Fluorescent Sensors For Selective Monitoring Of Kinase Activity, Gerard Thomas Ducharme

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Reliable and selective detection of specific biopolymers is critical in a broad range of biomedical and technological areas, including availability of simple and efficient point-of-care-compatible systems for the detection of prognostic, pharmacodynamic and predictive biomarkers. Monitoring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase is of major significance due to its link to many epithelial cancers. This task is complicated by the high rate of mutation occurring in patients treated with kinase inhibitors. This dissertation describes a conceptually novel design and synthesis of turn-on near-infrared fluorescent sensors for selective and sensitive detection of EGFR. The fluorescent signal generation mechanism is based …

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Every U.S. President in recent decades has had to respond to at least one pandemic disease. Political leadership has proven decisive. In the coming years, U.S. foreign policy will face at least three inter-related issues: today’s major pandemics of AIDS, TB, and Malaria; future outbreaks with the potential to become pandemics; and rising risk from infectious diseases associated with climate change. A review of epidemiologic data shows global progress on each issue is threatened. A coordinated U.S. effort, across agencies and engaged with national and multilateral partners, could save lives and address significant foreign policy interests. Such an effort could …

Activity And Thermal Biology Of Blunt-Nosed Leopard Lizards (Gambelia Sila) In The San Joaquin Desert Of California, David J. Germano Oct 2019

Activity And Thermal Biology Of Blunt-Nosed Leopard Lizards (Gambelia Sila) In The San Joaquin Desert Of California, David J. Germano

Western North American Naturalist

Because lizards are ectotherms, their life-history traits are greatly influenced by variations in thermal regimes. The Blunt-nosed Leopard Lizard (Gambelia sila) is an endangered lizard that dominates the lizard community in the San Joaquin Desert. Because of the protected status of the species, census protocols are in place to ensure that censuses are conducted during optimal times for lizard activity, but the protocols have not been evaluated by a detailed study. Also, because of changing thermal regimes as a result of climate change, there is concern for lizard species worldwide. I studied the activity and thermal biology of …

The Energetic Cost Of Anthropogenic Disturbance On The Southern Sea Otter (Enhydra Lutris Nereis), Heather Elizabeth Barrett Oct 2019

The Energetic Cost Of Anthropogenic Disturbance On The Southern Sea Otter (Enhydra Lutris Nereis), Heather Elizabeth Barrett

Master's Theses

With increased human populations and tourism in coastal areas, there is greater potential for disturbance of marine wildlife. Having high metabolic rates, sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) are at risk of increased energetic costs due to disturbance. To investigate these effects, sea otter activity in response to potential disturbance stimuli was recorded over three years, at three California locations: Monterey, Moss Landing, and Morro Bay. A hidden Markov Model was developed to examine how activity varies as a function of location, group size, pup to adult ratio, kelp canopy, and occurrence of and proximity to disturbance stimuli. Results were combined …

Effect Of Nicotine Exposure On Fatigue Mechanics Of Murine Arteries, Elizabeth Ho Oct 2019

Effect Of Nicotine Exposure On Fatigue Mechanics Of Murine Arteries, Elizabeth Ho

Master's Theses

Nicotine is an addictive substance found in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and cigarettes, and the use of such products has growing concern because of the prevalent use by young adults. Nicotine exposure degrades arterial tissue and results in increased arterial stiffness, which is linked to cardiovascular events, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. The hypothesis of this research is that fatigue loading reveals changes to the mechanical behavior of nicotine-treated arteries that is more informatively discriminating than stiffness alone. Ten murine arteries, five untreated and five nicotine-treated, were subjected to cyclic fatigue loading in an open-circumferential configuration by a custom tensometer …

The Effects Of Culture And Gender Roles On The Efficacy Of Social Support As A Coping Mechanism For Stress, Quy Minh Vu Oct 2019

The Effects Of Culture And Gender Roles On The Efficacy Of Social Support As A Coping Mechanism For Stress, Quy Minh Vu

Master's Theses

Though social support has been thought to be an effective coping mechanism for handling distress, this generalization comes with limitations in that social support is highly intertwined with specific characteristics that could alter both help-seeking behavior and its outcomes. The present study examined the effects of cultural differences on the effectiveness of differing social support sources (i.e., parents versus peers) between European American and Asian/Asian American samples, as well as the influence of gender role orientation on social support outcomes. Ninety-Five European American and Asian/Asian American participants were assigned to either a parent or peer social support letter task prior …

Dynamics And Ecological Implications Of The Ulva-Zostera Ecotone In Elkhorn Slough, California, María Vila Duplá Oct 2019

Dynamics And Ecological Implications Of The Ulva-Zostera Ecotone In Elkhorn Slough, California, María Vila Duplá

Master's Theses

Ecotones are transitional areas between adjacent ecological communities that have unique ecological qualities defined by space and time scales, and by the interactions between adjacent systems. Ecotones play an essential role in supporting biologically diverse communities, and are sensitive indicators of global change. An Ulva-Zostera ecotone extends along the northern shore of Seal Bend in Elkhorn Slough, an estuary located in central California. Although previous studies have mentioned the presence of the Ulva-Zostera ecotone, this was the first study to focus on understanding its driving factors, spatiotemporal dynamics, and overall ecological implications. A combination of habitat monitoring, water quality assessments, …

Preserving Ideals Of Chemical Reaction Networks, Mark Curiel Oct 2019

Preserving Ideals Of Chemical Reaction Networks, Mark Curiel

Master's Theses

Under the assumption of mass-action kinetics, every chemical reaction network has an associated polynomial dynamical system. Rather than study the dynamics of this system, we shall study the ideal generated by the polynomials in the system called the steady state ideal. In this thesis, we will show that there is a combinatorial way to determine the existence of monomials in the steady state ideal using the underlying structure of the network. This allows us to prove that there is a combinatorial condition that is enough to guarantee the steady state ideal is monomial. We introduce three operations on chemical reaction …

Asian Long-Range Transport In Relation To Atmospheric Rivers In Northern California, Catherine Liu Oct 2019

Asian Long-Range Transport In Relation To Atmospheric Rivers In Northern California, Catherine Liu

Master's Theses

The study investigated the effect of aerosol long-range transport on precipitation over northern California during atmospheric river (AR) events in the 2017 cold season (January-April). ARs in 2017 were among the strongest to date and the intense precipitation associated with the ARs resulted in flooding, destruction of property, and contamination of water supplies. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data showed Asian dust traveling across the northern Pacific Ocean along with AR events. Aerosol measurements in California, provided by the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE), showed that more Asian dust tends to be …

The Role Of Metacognition In Visual Art Education, Renae P. Mccollum Oct 2019

The Role Of Metacognition In Visual Art Education, Renae P. Mccollum

Master's Theses

Metacognition is a conscious activity that occurs in the brain when an individual monitors or controls his or her thinking. Research in multiple fields has found that metacognition plays a significant role in a person’s learning. It is currently a popular trend in general education to teach students metacognitive strategies, and research has shown that it is a practical tool to boost student success. Moreover, metacognition is most effective when it is taught explicitly and regularly practiced by the students. There is a need for more research into the effectiveness of explicitly teaching metacognition in middle and high school visual …

Time-Invariant Tensile Necking Of Blood On An Electrowetting Digital Microfluidic Platform, Curtis Young Oct 2019

Time-Invariant Tensile Necking Of Blood On An Electrowetting Digital Microfluidic Platform, Curtis Young

Master's Theses

Recent developments in electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) technology have expanded the possibilities for testing methods and investigation of blood. This work evaluated the development of necking geometry of whole blood and red blood cell (RBC) suspensions on a digital microfluidic (DMF) platform. This was achieved by applying tension to liquid droplet specimens on an EWOD-based device using applied electrowetting forces, thereby inducing necking. The deformation of 5 μL fluid specimens was recorded using neck radius and minimum neck width as two characteristic geometric parameters. Tensile tests were performed on phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), whole blood diluted in PBS, and RBCs suspended in PBS …

Development Of A Computational Elbow Joint Model To Analyze The Effects Of Synovial Fluid On Articular Cartilage During Joint Motion, Abhishek Yellapragada Oct 2019

Development Of A Computational Elbow Joint Model To Analyze The Effects Of Synovial Fluid On Articular Cartilage During Joint Motion, Abhishek Yellapragada

Master's Theses

While significant advances have been made in the development of computational elbow joint models, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) in the elbow joint has not yet been explored. The objective of this study is to develop a computational elbow joint model to simulate the effects of synovial fluid on articular cartilage during flexion, extension, pronation, and supination. The model was developed with anatomically accurate 3D bone geometries; articular cartilage geometries that were derived from the 3D bone geometries; ligaments defined as linear springs; muscles embedded as joint non-linear stiffness; and a fluid domain that encompassed the joint articulations with a homogenous, incompressible, …
