Heterogeneity And Plasticity Of Human Breast Cancer Cells In Response To Molecularly-Targeted Drugs, Emira Bousoik, Ramina Nabiee, Farideh Amirrad, Ashley Nichols, Rebecca Witt, Parvin Mahdipoor, Hamidreza Montazeri Aliabadi

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Non-responsive subpopulation of tumor cells, and acquired resistance in initially responsive cells are major challenges for cancer therapy with molecularly-targeted drugs. While point mutations are considered the major contributing factor to acquired resistance, in this study we explored the role of heterogeneity and plasticity of selected human breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468, and AU565) in their initial and adjusted response, respectively, to ruxolitinib, everolimus, and erlotinib. After determination of lethal concentration for 50% cell death (LC50), cells were exposed to selected drugs using three different approaches: single exposure to 4 × LC50 and collection of surviving cells, multiple exposures …

Evaluation Of Reproductive Phenology And Ecology Of Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) Across The Southeastern United States, Landon Robert Schofield Oct 2019

Evaluation Of Reproductive Phenology And Ecology Of Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) Across The Southeastern United States, Landon Robert Schofield

LSU Master's Theses

The primary driver of population growth and sustainability of gallinaceous birds is annual recruitment. Habitat selection by wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo spp.) during reproductive activities could influence production at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Vegetation conditions at nest sites that could drive nest success have not been clearly identified, which suggests that other factors may drive reproductive success.

Female wild turkeys maintain dominance hierarchies, which could influence how reproductively active females distribute themselves across the landscape during reproductive periods. Using high-frequency GPS data collected from reproductively active females, I analyzed nesting attempts for Eastern (n = 381), …

On Waves Propagating Through An Emergent Poroelastic Medium, Yuan-Jyh Lan Oct 2019

On Waves Propagating Through An Emergent Poroelastic Medium, Yuan-Jyh Lan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper describes a theoretical study of the problem of linear waves propagating over an emergent poroelastic medium. Lan-Lee’s poro-elastomer theory is extended to derive a new analytical solution for describing this problem, with the free surface boundary condition discussed in the context of a poroelastic medium, a topic that has rarely been covered by previous studies. In the present approach, the problem domain is divided into three subregions and a negligible water-exposed region. Using general solutions for each region and the matching dynamic and kinematic conditions for neighboring regions, a set of simultaneous equations is developed and numerically solved. …

Cpue Standardization For The Pacific Saury (Cololabis Saira) Fishery In The Northwest Pacific, Wen-Bin Huang, Chih-Hao Hsieh, Tai-Sheng Chiu, Wei-Ting Hsu, Chih-Shin Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In stock assessment and fisheries management, the standardization of catch per unit effort (CPUE) is critical to derive an effective index of the abundance of exploited fish stocks. In addition to developing various statistical models, a method including the relative fishing power (RFP) of individual vessels has been developed from an intuition concept and applied to bottom trawl fisheries using logbookbased data. This is a convenient and traightforward approach for standardizing the catch-effort data of a fishery. The Pacific saury is a pelagic fish species, and its stock in the Northwest Pacific has been targeted by international fleets since the …

Intrinsic Cleavage Inhibition By Thermophilic Type Ii-S Restriction Endonucleases, Dino Jake Ciccone Oct 2019

Intrinsic Cleavage Inhibition By Thermophilic Type Ii-S Restriction Endonucleases, Dino Jake Ciccone

Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses

Restriction endonucleases (REs) are the cornerstone research tools used in molecular biology and biotechnology. These enzymes are essential to several ground-breaking achievements, including DNA cloning, gene editing, and genome mapping. A subset of these enzymes, Type II-S restriction endonucleases (IISREs), cleave double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) not governed by sequence specificity, but rather at a fixed distance from their recognition sequence. These enzymes maintain complete cleavage promiscuity, allowing utilization in techniques such as Golden Gate assembly, Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE), and Restriction Endonuclease Protection, Selection, and Amplification (REPSA). However, laboratories generated evidence that intrinsically cleavage refractory sequences exist. Understanding the …

Composition And Distribution Of Fish Larvae Surrounding The Upwelling Zone In The Waters Of Northeastern Taiwan In Summer, Yi-Chen Wang, Ming-An Lee Oct 2019

Composition And Distribution Of Fish Larvae Surrounding The Upwelling Zone In The Waters Of Northeastern Taiwan In Summer, Yi-Chen Wang, Ming-An Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

We investigated the species composition and distribution of fish larvae surrounding the upwelling zone in the waters of northeastern Taiwan in July 2011. The surface water had higher temperatures (25.7°C-28.3°C) and lower salinity (33.67-34.05 psu) than did lower water columns. A divergent trend was observed between temperature and salinity in the waters above 80 m. Moreover, we identified a cold-core eddy at the upwelling of the Kuroshio subsurface at waters approximately 60 m beneath the surface. In total, 1834 fish larvae were collected from eight stations; 85 taxa contributing to 60 families were identified. The abundance of fish larvae varied …

Camptothecin-Based Dendrimersomes For Gene Delivery And Redox-Responsive Drug Delivery To Cancer Cells, Partha Laskar, Sukrut Somani, Sarah Jane Campbell, Margaret Mullin, Patricia Keating, Rothwelle J. Tate, Craig Irving, Hing Y. Leung, Christine Dufès

School of Medicine Publications

Combination therapy involving chemotherapeutic drugs and genes is emerging as a promising strategy to provide a synergistic therapeutic effect, to overcome drug resistance while reducing the severe side effects associated with conventional chemotherapeutic drugs. However, the lack of nanomedicines able to simultaneously carry anti-cancer drugs and nucleic acids limits the application of this therapeutic strategy. To overcome this issue, we proposed to synthesize a pro-drug dendrimer by conjugating the PEGylated, positively charged generation 3-diaminobutyric polypropylenimine dendrimer to the anti-cancer drug camptothecin with a redox-sensitive disulphide linkage, and evaluate its efficacy to co-deliver the complexed DNA and camptothecin to cancer cells. …

Brachiopod Shell Thickness Links Environment And Evolution, U Balthasar, J Jin, L Hints, M Cusack Oct 2019

Brachiopod Shell Thickness Links Environment And Evolution, U Balthasar, J Jin, L Hints, M Cusack

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

While it is well established that the shapes and sizes of shells are strongly phylogenetically controlled, little is known about the phylogenetic constraints on shell thickness. Yet, shell thickness is likely to be sensitive to environmental fluctuations and has the potential to illuminate environmental perturbations through deep time. Here we systematically quantify the thickness of the anterior brachiopod shell which protects the filtration chamber and is thus considered functionally homologous across higher taxa of brachiopods. Our data comes from 66 genera and ten different orders and shows well-defined upper and lower boundaries of anterior shell thickness. For Ordovician and Silurian …
