Oyster Reefs In Northern Gulf Of Mexico Estuaries Harbor Diverse Fish And Decapod Crustacean Assemblages: A Meta-Synthesis, Megan K. La Peyre, Danielle Aguilar Marshall, Lindsay S. Miller

Faculty Publications

Oyster reefs provide habitat for numerous fish and decapod crustacean species that mediate ecosystem functioning and support vibrant fisheries. Recent focus on the restoration of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs stems from this role as a critical ecosystem engineer. Within the shallow estuaries of the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM), the eastern oyster is the dominant reef building organism. This study synthesizes data on fish and decapod crustacean occupancy of oyster reefs across nGoM with the goal of providing management and restoration benchmarks, something that is currently lacking for the region. Relevant data from 23 studies were identified, representing data …

Genetic Structure Of Mycoplasma Ovipneumoniae Informs Pathogen Spillover Dynamics Between Domestic And Wild Caprinae In The Western United States, Pauline L. Kamath, Kezia Manlove, E. Frances Cassirer, Paul C. Cross, Thomas E. Besser

Ecology Center Publications

Spillover diseases have significant consequences for human and animal health, as well as wildlife conservation. We examined spillover and transmission of the pneumonia-associated bacterium Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae in domestic sheep, domestic goats, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats across the western United States using 594 isolates, collected from 1984 to 2017. Our results indicate high genetic diversity of M. ovipneumoniae strains within domestic sheep, whereas only one or a few strains tend to circulate in most populations of bighorn sheep or mountain goats. These data suggest domestic sheep are a reservoir, while the few spillovers to bighorn sheep and mountain goats can …

Genomic Selection In Rubber Tree Breeding: A Comparison Of Models And Methods For Managing G×E Interactions, Livia M. Souza, Felipe R. Francisco, Paulo S. Gonçalves, Erivaldo J. Scaloppi Junior, Vincent Le Guen, Roberto Fritsche-Neto, Anete P. Souza Oct 2019

Genomic Selection In Rubber Tree Breeding: A Comparison Of Models And Methods For Managing G×E Interactions, Livia M. Souza, Felipe R. Francisco, Paulo S. Gonçalves, Erivaldo J. Scaloppi Junior, Vincent Le Guen, Roberto Fritsche-Neto, Anete P. Souza

Faculty Publications

Several genomic prediction models combining genotype × environment (G×E) interactions have recently been developed and used for genomic selection (GS) in plant breeding programs. G×E interactions reduce selection accuracy and limit genetic gains in plant breeding. Two data sets were used to compare the prediction abilities of multienvironment G×E genomic models and two kernel methods. Specifically, a linear kernel, or GB (genomic best linear unbiased predictor [GBLUP]), and a nonlinear kernel, or Gaussian kernel (GK), were used to compare the prediction accuracies (PAs) of four genomic prediction models: 1) a single-environment, main genotypic effect model (SM); 2) a multienvironment, main …

W. E. B. Du Bois’S “Conservation Of Races”: A Metaphilosophical Text, Kimberly Ann Harris Oct 2019

W. E. B. Du Bois’S “Conservation Of Races”: A Metaphilosophical Text, Kimberly Ann Harris

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Nothing was more important for W. E. B. Du Bois than to promote the upward mobility of African Americans. This essay revisits his “Conversation of Races” to demonstrate its general philosophical importance. Ultimately, Du Bois’s three motivations for giving the address reveal his view of the nature of philosophical inquiry: to critique earlier phenotypic conceptions of race, to show the essentiality of history, and to promote a reflexive practice. Commentators have been unduly invested in the hermeneutic readings and as a result have misunderstood its philosophical dimensions. Du Bois did more than introduce the concept of race into the purview …

Uncovering And Characterizing Splice Variants Associated With Survival In Lung Cancer Patients, Sean West, Sushil Kumar, Surinder K. Batra, Hesham Ali, Dario Ghersi

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications

Splice variants have been shown to play an important role in tumor initiation and progression and can serve as novel cancer biomarkers. However, the clinical importance of individual splice variants and the mechanisms by which they can perturb cellular functions are still poorly understood. To address these issues, we developed an efficient and robust computational method to: (1) identify splice variants that are associated with patient survival in a statistically significant manner; and (2) predict rewired protein-protein interactions that may result from altered patterns of expression of such variants. We applied our method to the lung adenocarcinoma dataset from TCGA …

Equine Hoof Stratum Internum K14+Cd105+ Progenitor Cells: Culture, Characterization, And Model Of Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition, Qingqiu Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

For the potential benefit of progenitor cells to be realized in cell-based clinical therapies, it is vital to investigate the mechanism between progenitor cells and abnormal tissue formation. Laminitis is a fatal condition that is often presented by equine hoof inflammation and hoof tissue disarrangement. The persistence of abnormal tissue formation after the resolution of equine laminitis suggests there is progenitor cell compromise. So far, there is limited information about equine hoof progenitor cells and the effects of inflammation on hoof progenitor cells. To pursue a better understanding of both hoof progenitor cell and hoof growth as well as find …

We Can Get There: Understanding The High School Experience Of Latin@S In A Large Suburban School District, Octavio Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

Success in school is something that every student tries and accomplishes in different ways, but this is not a simple matter of just demonstrating academic success. Students may have the best grades, but if they do not master the “college student” (Collier, Morgan, 2004) role, many students may not succeed. When students master this role, it will help them understand the different expectations professors may have and then will be able to apply their academic skills effectively and help them meet these expectations. This is something that many students know and understand, and this information is not passed on to …

Gamification And Entrepreneurial Intentions, Jl Ruiz-Alba, A Soares, Ma Rodríguez-Molina, A Banoun Oct 2019

Gamification And Entrepreneurial Intentions, Jl Ruiz-Alba, A Soares, Ma Rodríguez-Molina, A Banoun

Plymouth Business School

This paper investigates how gamification can influence entrepreneurial intentions (EI) of a group of users of an online platform provided by a private company. A quantitative research strategy was used with a sample of 220 respondents. These respondents were tested before and after the gamification experience. Main findings support literature suggesting a clear effect of attitudes towards behaviour (ATT) and perceived behavioural control (PBC) on EI, in line with the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Once the basic assumptions of TPB were confirmed, the authors tested the effects of gamification comparing before and after results. Main findings highlight an increase …

Mechanism Of Neutrophil Homeostasis And Immunity In Pneumonia And Sepsis, Sagar Paudel Oct 2019

Mechanism Of Neutrophil Homeostasis And Immunity In Pneumonia And Sepsis, Sagar Paudel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Severe bacterial pneumonia and septicemia are pressing health problems. A better understanding of cellular and molecular players of neutrophil immunity and homeostasis in bacterial pneumonia and sepsis is critical for inspiring novel therapeutics. Chemokine CXCL1 is a widely secreted neutrophil attractant and Nod-like receptor (NLRC4) is commonly expressed cytoplasmic pathogen sensor in hematopoietic compartments. How these innate mediators convert pathogen signals into molecular cues of immune response in context of Gram-positive bacterial pneumonia and septicemia largely remain unknown. Utilizing Cxcl1 gene deficient mice, we demonstrate CXCL1 regulates neutrophil influx, bacterial clearance, and host survival in pneumococcal pneumonia-derived sepsis. Furthermore, Cxcl1 …

Posted: October 24th, 2019

Ever hear of a little company called 23andMe? For around $100, you can get a breakdown of your global heritage. You can even get it for your dog or cat.

The availability to learn more about our own ancestry or genetic health markers is a result of the Human Genome Project. The original mapping of human DNA took thirteen years to complete, and involved 20 institutions around the globe. It is considered the world’s largest collaborative biological project, with a price tag of …

The Perfect Misogynist Storm And The Electromagnetic Shape Of Feminism: Weathering Brazil’S Political Crisis, Cara K. Snyder, Cristina Scheibe Wolff

Journal of International Women's Studies

In Brazil, the 2016 coup against Dilma Rousseff and the Worker’s Party (PT), and the subsequent jailing of former PT President Luis Ignacio da Silva (Lula), laid the groundwork for the 2018 election of ultra-conservative Jair Bolsonaro. In the perfect storm leading up to the coup, the conservative elite drew on deep-seated misogynist discourses to oust Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s progressive first woman president, and the Worker’s Party she represented. Imprisoning Lula and preventing him from running solidified the effects of the coup and opened the field to the right wing. In this article, we track the roots of the elite’s …

Fate Of The Organophosphate Insecticide, Chlorpyrifos, In Leaves, Soil, And Air Following Application, Supta Das, Kimberly J. Hageman, Madeleine Taylor, Sue Michelsen-Heath, Ian Stewart

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A field study was conducted to further our understanding about the fate and transport of the organophosphate insecticide, chlorpyrifos, and its degradation product, chlorpyrifos oxon. Leaf, soil and air sampling was conducted for 21 days after chlorpyrifos application to a field of purple tansy (Phacelia tanacetifolia). Air samples were collected using a high-volume air sampler (HVAS) and seven battery-operated medium-volume active air samplers placed around the field and on a 500-m transect extending away from the field. Chlorpyrifos was detected every day of the sampling period in all matrices, with concentrations decreasing rapidly after application. Chlorpyrifos oxon was …
