Professional Identity Of Esl Teachers And The Missing Links In Kosovo Schools, Syzane Merovci
UBT International Conference
Understanding the process of identity construction, its dynamics, influencing factors, and the roles teachers adhere to while exercising their profession, has become a challenge many researchers are trying to overcome. In the Kosovo context, this field of study result utterly un-researched. Therefore, this study aims to understand the identity perception of the novice and experienced EFL teachers involving the following features; gender, role, qualification, teaching experience, methodology, teaching curriculum. The study took place in public and private elementary schools in Pristina region, Kosovo. A group of 32 EFL (English as Foreign Language) teachers engaged in urban and rural areas and …

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
The Applied Learning Experience (ALEX) program at The University of Tampa pairs multidisciplinary teams of UT students with local companies to solve real-world problems. Tampa Bay organizations provide problems or creative opportunities that may benefit from a multidisciplinary, inquiry-based approach. Teams of three to four students from different academic majors then collaborate to produce a deliverable for the organization within a 14-week timeframe. ALEX teams also benefit from supervision by a faculty committee composed of members with subject-area expertise. This session will the present logistics, the challenges, lessons learned, and initial outcomes of the program.

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate research enhances student learning and professional development, including self-reported learning gains and solidified career goals. However, it is unclear how undergraduate research affects direct measures of student learning relative to other High Impact Practices (HIPs). FGCU assesses critical thinking, information literacy, & written communication skills among graduating seniors annually, allowing us to compare HIPs directly. Seniors that complete research-focused capstones perform significantly better than students completing service-learning or internship experiences. Research appears to strengthen students’ use of evidence, which then improves the overall development of these transferable skills.

A Defense Of Free-Roaming Cats From A Hedonist Account Of Feline Well-Being, C. E. Abbate
A Defense Of Free-Roaming Cats From A Hedonist Account Of Feline Well-Being, C. E. Abbate
Philosophy Faculty Research
There is a widespread belief that for their own safety and for the protection of wildlife, cats should be permanently kept indoors. Against this view, I argue that cat guardians have a duty to provide their feline companions with outdoor access. The argument is based on a sophisticated hedonistic account of animal well-being that acknowledges that the performance of species-normal ethological behavior is especially pleasurable. Territorial behavior, which requires outdoor access, is a feline-normal ethological behavior, so when a cat is permanently confined to the indoors, her ability to flourish is impaired. Since cat guardians have a duty not to …
Antibiotics Overuse And Bacterial Resistance, Mir Saleem, Brett Deters, Adam De La Bastide, Martha Korzen
Antibiotics Overuse And Bacterial Resistance, Mir Saleem, Brett Deters, Adam De La Bastide, Martha Korzen
Biology Faculty Articles
Antibiotic usage has become very widespread, as they are used to treat so many infectious diseases today. Antimicrobial agents exert their actions via different mechanisms including blockage of cell wall synthesis, interference of protein and/or nucleic acid synthesis, interruption of cell membrane structure, and inhibition of a metabolic pathway. The treatment of bacterial infections with antimicrobial agents has become more difficult due to the capability of bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics. Erroneous diagnosing, misconceptions, and improper physician-patient dynamics have led to overuse of antibiotics and the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Bacterial colonies have been shown to confer advantageous genetic …
Exploitation Of Wastelands For Fodder Production And Agroforestry, Gurbachan Singh
Exploitation Of Wastelands For Fodder Production And Agroforestry, Gurbachan Singh
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Natural resources degradation for agricultural production and environmental protection has been a matter of concern for future food, nutrition, environment and livelihood security. As per current estimates, 120.7 million hectare (mha) is under degraded or wastelands. These lands provide ample opportunity for growing fodder trees and grasses to bridge the gap between demand and supply of green and dry fodder.Several species of fodder trees and grasses have been identified and their agro-techniques standardized for raising in different categories of wastelands such as affected by soil and wind erosion, salinity, acidity and mining etc. A brief account of such plants is …

Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
It is believed that if students are taught inductively in their first 2 years, it could induce many of them to seek research experiences later in their academic careers. To do this, we initiated an effort to promote engagement in research topics and faculty development. First, collaboration between one faculty member at SSC and a Principal Investigator at the Sanford-Burnham Institute was developed. This collaboration resulted in the creation of several internships at the Institute for students in the newly developed STEM research class. Second, to increase student engagement, the biology department developed a research focused colloquium series. Each fall …

Introducing research into UG curriculum is critical toward the development of empirically informed future researchers and practitioners. Developing mechanisms to embed research into curriculum and culture can be challenging. To address these challenges, our UG psychology program has implemented initiatives to increase research participation. We will discuss several which include embedded class research, laboratory experiments, poster opportunities, and faculty research team participation. We also facilitate UG through research centers, partnering with public and private organizations, and novel approaches such as Roach Lab (roachlab.org). We will specifically highlight outcomes attributed to engaging students in research.

In the production of commodity chemicals through microbial synthesis, the use of renewable sugars as a raw material is increasingly common. However, this generates competition between its use in the chemical industry and the food industry. Therefore, developing alternative biosynthetic pathways involving other renewable feedstocks to replace starch-derived feedstocks is crucial. CgX, a tautomerase native to Corynebacterium glutamicum, catalyzes the hydration and subsequent decarboxylation of acetylenecarboxylic acid (ACA), a compound that can be produced from methane gas and carbon dioxide, both abundant greenhouse gases. The products formed from the CgX (wild-type)-catalyzed reaction of ACA results in a mixture of …

Do After-School Robotics Programs Expand The Pipeline Into Stem Majors In College?, Cathy Burack, Alan Melchior, Matthew Hoover
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
One result of the growing concerns over the numbers of young people moving into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related careers has been the expansion of formal and informal STEM education programming for pre-college youth, from elementary school through high school. While the number of programs has grown rapidly, there is little research on their long-term impacts on participant education and career trajectories. This paper presents interim findings from a multi-year longitudinal study of three national after-school robotics programs that engage students in designing, building, and competing complex robots with the goal of inspiring long-term interest in STEM. Focusing on …

Malbrancheamide is a fungal natural product with significant vasorelaxation effects and potential as a cardiovascular therapeutic. The dichlorination of the indole ring is key for its biological activity, and this transformation is performed by the flavin dependent halogenase MalA. This enzyme utilizes a proposed chloramine lysine intermediate to iteratively and selectively chlorinate its natural substrate premalbrancheamide. Halogenases can provide orthogonal selectivity to many chemical methods, making them useful for pharmaceutical applications, while providing selective methods for late-stage functionalization. This investigation focuses on the substrate scope of the halogenase on complex pharmaceutically relevant substrates in collaboration with the Novartis Institutes for …

Methionine Synthase (MetSyn) is an enzyme that uses folate and homocysteine to create the amino acid methionine, which is essential for all organisms. There are key differences between the fungal MetSyn enzyme and the mammalian (human) form, especially with regard to the proximity of the two binding sites for folate and homocysteine. Taking advantage of these differences, an antifungal drug could be developed to exclusively bind the fungal enzyme and inhibit fungal growth while leaving the host (patient) unaffected. We are currently exploring the synthesis of various molecules that mimic folate, an essential substrate for MetSyn function. We plan to …

Microfiber Pollution In A Southern Lake Michigan Watershed, Edward Kostelnik, Julie Peller, Laurie Eberhardt, Cassandra Nelson, Robert Clark, Chris Iceman
Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium
Synthetic microfibers, such as polyester, rayon, acrylic, and nylon, originate from everyday materials such as clothing, blankets, and rugs. The shedding of these plastic microfibers, especially in laundry water, has led to water and sediment contamination in watersheds and surface water. Research in the field of microfiber pollution is important for many reasons, including the need to understand the types and quantity of plastic pollution that contaminate watersheds and surface water around the world. To evaluate the extent of microfiber pollution in a southern Lake Michigan watershed, the Salt Creek watershed, research has been carried out on water and sediment …
The Importance Of Statistical Design In Spatial Analysis: Indiana Superfund Site Locations And Socioeconomic Variables, Jenna Johnston, Cecilia Hall
The Importance Of Statistical Design In Spatial Analysis: Indiana Superfund Site Locations And Socioeconomic Variables, Jenna Johnston, Cecilia Hall
Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium
Environmental justice research has focused on the question of whether marginalized people are more likely to live close to polluted sites. These spatial disparities have been found when analyzing the distribution of Superfund sites with race and socioeconomic status. However, these results appear to be dependent on what methods and units of analysis are used. This study examines whether these disparities exist in Indiana by comparing the results of two different statistical tests: a t-test and bootstrapping analysis.
Using t-tests to compare median income in areas close to and far from Superfund sites at distances of 1 and 5 miles …
A New Catechism For The Digital Age, Bruce D. Baker
A New Catechism For The Digital Age, Bruce D. Baker
SPU Works
Preaching and teaching in our digital age demands theological reflection to answer challenging questions raised by exponential technologies. Can an AI become conscious? Is AI intelligent, really? Can a robot sin? Can we program morality? Can we upload our minds? Is transhumanism a technical possibility? Do we need to rethink eschatology? In this paper I hope to contribute to a constructive dialog. I suggest this catechism format as a means to support the need of the Church to teach sound theological doctrine with respect to these challenging questions. By no means do I wish to imply that this catechism is …

To safeguard biodiversity effectively, marine protected areas (MPAs) should be sited using the best available science. There are numerous ongoing United Nations and non-governmental initiatives to map globally important marine areas. The criteria used by these initiatives vary, resulting in contradictions in the areas identified as important. Our analysis is the first to overlay these initiatives, quantify consensus, and conduct gap analyses at the global scale. We found that 55% of the ocean has been identified as important by one or more initiatives, and that individual areas have been identified by as many as seven overlapping initiatives. Using our overlay …
