Pharmacokinetics Of Once-Daily Extended-Release Tacrolimus Tablets Versus Twice-Daily Capsules In De Novo Liver Transplant, Derek A Dubay, Lewis Teperman, Kimi Ueda, Andrew Silverman, William Chapman, Angel E Alsina, Carmelina Tyler, Daniel R Stevens

2010-2019 OA Pubs

The pharmacokinetics of once-daily extended-release tacrolimus tablets (LCPT) in de novo liver transplantation have not been previously reported. In this phase II, randomized, open-label study, de novo liver transplant recipients were randomized to LCPT 0.07-0.13 mg/kg/day (taken once daily; n = 29) or twice-daily immediate-release tacrolimus capsules (IR-Tac) at 0.10-0.15 mg/kg/day (divided twice daily; n = 29). Subsequent doses of both drugs were adjusted to maintain tacrolimus trough concentrations of 5 to 20 ng/mL through day 90, and 5-15 ng/mL thereafter. Twenty-four-hour pharmacokinetic profiles were obtained on days 1, 7, and 14, with trough concentration and efficacy/safety monitoring through year …

Diel Transcriptional Response Of A California Current Plankton Microbiome To Light, Low Iron, And Enduring Viral Infection, Ahmed Moustafa Nov 2019

Diel Transcriptional Response Of A California Current Plankton Microbiome To Light, Low Iron, And Enduring Viral Infection, Ahmed Moustafa

Faculty Journal Articles

Phytoplankton and associated microbial communities provide organic carbon to oceanic food webs and drive ecosystem dynamics. However, capturing those dynamics is challenging. Here, an in situ, semi-Lagrangian, robotic sampler profiled pelagic microbes at 4 h intervals over ~2.6 days in North Pacific high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll waters. We report on the community structure and transcriptional dynamics of microbes in an operationally large size class (>5 μm) predominantly populated by dinoflagellates, ciliates, haptophytes, pelagophytes, diatoms, cyanobacteria (chiefly Synechococcus), prasinophytes (chiefly Ostreococcus), fungi, archaea, and proteobacteria. Apart from fungi and archaea, all groups exhibited 24-h periodicity in some transcripts, but larger portions of …

Mammalian cells express a variety of nucleic acid sensors as one of the first lines of defense against infection. Despite extensive progress in the study of sensor signaling pathways during the last decade, the detailed mechanisms remain unclear. In our previous studies, we reported increased type I interferon expression and the upregulation of several proposed cytosolic DNA sensors after transfection of several tumor cell types with plasmid DNA (pDNA). In the present study, we sought to reveal the early events in the cytosolic sensing of this nucleic acid in a myoblast cell line. We demonstrated that DNA-dependent activator of interferon …

A Strategy For Building Healthy Local Churches In Jordan, Kwang Hu Hwang Nov 2019

A Strategy For Building Healthy Local Churches In Jordan, Kwang Hu Hwang

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Evangelical churches in Jordan have faced many challenges in maintaining healthy churches under the Islamic government. The churches in Jordan are not only important for local people, but also for people in the Middle East in fulfilling the Great Commission. This is because many Jordanians visit various Arab countries to have a job and a numerous number of Gulf countries’ people travel to Jordan. The purpose of this thesis is to create a strategy with this context to build healthy local churches in Jordan that can then be involved in fulfilling the Great Commission actively for the local and Arab …

Modifying Carbon Supports For Improved Ion-Exchange Capacity In Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Bryan Bill Nov 2019

Modifying Carbon Supports For Improved Ion-Exchange Capacity In Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Bryan Bill

All Theses

Sulfonated perfluorocyclobutyl phosphonate (s-PFCB-PO3) polymers are studied extensively in proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel-cell applications for their favorable ionic-conducting properties. Inspired by their high chemical, mechanical and thermal stability, PFCB polymers have been used by several groups as grafting compounds onto zirconia-decorated carbon black (ZrC) catalyst supports. The trifluorovinyl ether (TFVE) moiety of the aryl bis-TFVE monomer provides a template for polymerization by step-growth [2+2] cycloaddition to afford PFCB polymers which upon subsequent sulfonation can have high ion-exchange capacity and high proton conductivity. Aryl phosphonic acid substitution onto the terminal TFVE groups provides a route to anchoring the ionic polymers onto …

The Impact Of Genetic Background And Cell Lineage On The Level And Pattern Of Gene Expression In Position Effect Variegation, Sarah C.R. Elgin, Sh Wang Nov 2019

The Impact Of Genetic Background And Cell Lineage On The Level And Pattern Of Gene Expression In Position Effect Variegation, Sarah C.R. Elgin, Sh Wang

Biology Faculty Research

"Background: Chromatin-based transcriptional silencing is often described as a stochastic process, largely because of the mosaic expression observed in position effect variegation (PEV), where a euchromatic reporter gene is silenced in some cells as a consequence of juxtaposition with heterochromatin. High levels of variation in PEV phenotypes are commonly observed in reporter stocks. To ascertain whether background mutations are the major contributors to this variation, we asked how much of the variation is determined by genetic variants segregating in the population, examining both the level and pattern of expression using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as the model.

Results: Using …

Using Bourdieu To Answer Spivak: On The Study Of Historical Subaltern Religious Practices, Curtis Hutt Nov 2019

Using Bourdieu To Answer Spivak: On The Study Of Historical Subaltern Religious Practices, Curtis Hutt

International Dialogue

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, in her 1988 publication “Can the Subaltern Speak?,” famously challenges the ability of scholars—educated and operating within the dominating power structures of oftentimes European colonizing transnational political and religious movements—to ever grasp subaltern religion. This skepticism logically extends to the work of historians investigating the obscured religious traditions of past cultures that have been overlooked, overwhelmed, and suppressed. In this paper, I lay out a restrained strategy inspired in part by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and based upon my own historical work for circumventing some forms of historical blindness that conceal subaltern pasts. In conclusion, a …

Legacy Effects Of Biodegradable Mulch And Soil Amendments On Vegetable Crops And The Soil, Elise V. H. Reid Nov 2019

Legacy Effects Of Biodegradable Mulch And Soil Amendments On Vegetable Crops And The Soil, Elise V. H. Reid

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Plastic film mulches are used in horticulture to manage weeds, improve water retention, and increase soil temperature. Bioplastics and biofabrics are potentially sustainable alternatives to plastic film; however, they have different rates of in soil degradation. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a 100% biobased polymer that degrades slowly, but could fulfill organic certification to be soil incorporated. Mater-Bi is a commercially available biodegradable plastic (bioplastic), which degrades quickly, but cannot be incorporated in organic systems. Our objectives were to determine the individual and combined effects of soil amendments and residual mulch on vegetable crop yield and soil fertility. In a two-year …

Geometric Morphometric Analyses Support Incorporating The Goshen Point Type Into Plainview, Briggs Buchanan, Mark Collard, Michael J. O'Brien Nov 2019

Geometric Morphometric Analyses Support Incorporating The Goshen Point Type Into Plainview, Briggs Buchanan, Mark Collard, Michael J. O'Brien

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Recent work has demonstrated that Goshen points overlap in time with another group of unfluted lanceolate points from the Plains, Plainview points. This has raised the question of whether the two types should be kept separate or consolidated into a single type. We sought to resolve this issue by applying geometric morphometric methods to a sample of points from well-documented Goshen and Plainview assemblages. We found that their shapes were statistically indistinguishable, which indicates that Goshen and Plainview points should be assigned to the same type. Because Plainview points were recognized before Goshen points, it is the latter type name …

Exploring How Primary School Teachers Integrate Children’S Ideas In Science During Teaching And Learning: A Case Of One Primary School In Arua District, Draleku John Jay Milsome Nov 2019

Exploring How Primary School Teachers Integrate Children’S Ideas In Science During Teaching And Learning: A Case Of One Primary School In Arua District, Draleku John Jay Milsome

Master of Education

The focus of this study was to establish whether and how primary school teachers integrate children‟s ideas in science during science lessons. Primary pupils are motivated to learn if science lessons are connected to their experiences. World wide, there is a general trend of loss of interest in sciences among students, partly because teaching and learning processes are disconnected from the pupils‟ daily experiences. If planning and implementation of science lessons do not incorporate children‟s ideas in science, conceptual misunderstanding will continue, leading to poor results in sciences. In this study two teachers were selected by purposive sampling, and 12pupils …

Reduced Bias For Respondent Driven Sampling: Accounting For Non-Uniform Edge Sampling Probabilities In People Who Inject Drugs In Mauritius, Miles Q. Ott, Krista J. Gile, Matthew T. Harrison, Lisa G. Johnston, Joseph W. Hogan

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

People who inject drugs are an important population to study in order to reduce transmission of blood-borne illnesses including HIV and Hepatitis. In this paper we estimate the HIV and Hepatitis C prevalence among people who inject drugs, as well as the proportion of people who inject drugs who are female in Mauritius. Respondent driven sampling (RDS), a widely adopted link-tracing sampling design used to collect samples from hard-to-reach human populations, was used to collect this sample. The random walk approximation underlying many common RDS estimators assumes that each social relation (edge) in the underlying social network has an equal …

Women In The Serbian Orthodox Church: Historical Overview And Contemporary Situation, Aleksandra Djurić Milovanović, Radmila Radić Nov 2019

Women In The Serbian Orthodox Church: Historical Overview And Contemporary Situation, Aleksandra Djurić Milovanović, Radmila Radić

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Research on the position of women in the Eastern Orthodox churches is still scarce. Some recent studies show differences among the various Orthodox Churches in Eastern Europe regarding women’s issues. The position of the women in the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) was addressed as late as in the 1990s, but this is still an insufficiently examined field. Eastern Orthodox theologians have rarely discussed the problem of the position and role of women in the SOC. During the socialist era, they did not engage this topic, except in studies related to female monasticism. On the other hand, sociological and anthropological studies …

The impact of society’s digital integration is difficult to articulate. It suffices to say much of our lives are now digitized, and digital technologies have yielded immeasurable benefits to the individual and society at large. Change heralds challenge, and the digital paradigm-shift has brought challenges of comparable numerosity and magnitude. Privacy is at the forefront of those challenges. In recent years, the digital industry has been subject to increased scrutiny over the rising number of privacy scandals and perceived market failures related to the collection and use of individuals’ personal information. New technologies, market developments, and increases in public attention …

Balancing Act: Admissibility Of Propensity Evidence Under Article I, Section 18(C) Of The Missouri Constitution, Emily Holtzman

Missouri Law Review

The American legal system has a long-standing ban against using character evidence to show a party’s propensity to act in conformity with that character. This rule has been especially stringent in the criminal system, where the notion is that when a criminal defendant is tried for a crime, that defendant should face trial only for the crimes charged. However, certain crimes, like sex crimes, can be incredibly difficult to prosecute and, accordingly, victim advocates have pushed for changes to these rules. The Federal Rules of Evidence (“FRE”) and several states have enacted rules that allow evidence of prior bad acts …

The Quest For Equal Dignity: Federal Statutory Protection Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination, Alec D. Guy Nov 2019

The Quest For Equal Dignity: Federal Statutory Protection Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination, Alec D. Guy

Missouri Law Review

Over one million Americans are married to someone of the same sex. Although the United States Supreme Court guaranteed the fundamental right of marriage to same-sex couples in 2015, these individuals can still be denied housing or fired from their dream job after getting legally married. For much of history, gay individuals have not been protected by the law, both statutorily and constitutionally. Private individuals are generally still free to discriminate against gay people today because federal statutes rarely prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. Consequently, many have argued that sexual orientation discrimination constitutes unlawful discrimination based on sex. Until …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The development of new therapeutic options against Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection is a critical public health concern, as the causative bacterium is highly resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics. Antimicrobial host-defense peptides (HDPs) are highly effective at simultaneously modulating the immune system function and directly killing bacteria through membrane disruption and oxidative damage. The copper-binding HDPs piscidin 1 and piscidin 3 have previously shown potent antimicrobial activity against a number of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial species but have never been investigated in an anaerobic environment. Synergy between piscidins and metal ions increases bacterial killing aerobically. Here, we …

Effect Of Processing On Microbiota Accessible Carbohydrates In Whole Grains, Caroline Smith Nov 2019

Effect Of Processing On Microbiota Accessible Carbohydrates In Whole Grains, Caroline Smith

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There is potential to increase microbiota accessible carbohydrates (MAC) in whole grains through food processing. Therefore, different processing conditions for boiling and extrusion of whole wheat flour were studied for their effect on MAC. Processing conditions had a minimal effect on fermentation response using 2 fecal samples of disparate composition. However, the processing method had an impact on the fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates and subsequent short chain fatty acids production, but only for a microbiome with high diversity and a predominance of microbes associated with dietary fiber intake. Subsequently, five processing methods: boiling, extrusion, unleavened bread, yeast bread, and sourdough …

Most alternatives assessments (AAs) published to date are largely hazard-based rankings, thereby ignoring potential differences in human and/or ecosystem exposures; as such, they may not represent a fully informed consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of possible alternatives. Building on the 2014 US National Academy of Sciences recommendations to improve AA decisions by including comparative exposure assessment into AAs, the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute's (HESI) Sustainable Chemical Alternatives Technical Committee, which comprises scientists from academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations, developed a qualitative comparative exposure approach. Conducting such a comparison can screen for alternatives that are expected to have …

Psychosocial Adjustment In Children Of Immigrants, Shaza A. Karam Nov 2019

Psychosocial Adjustment In Children Of Immigrants, Shaza A. Karam

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

For immigrants, assimilation into mainstream society is complex, with numerous layers and experiences across multiple settings (e.g., employment, education, healthcare). In addition, immigrant populations are underserved and under-resourced compared to native populations, with major systemic barriers that influence socioeconomic status as well as immigrant ability to maximize education and employment potential. In turn, these difficulties have an adverse impact on psychosocial wellbeing in immigrants broadly. Immigrant youth are a particularly vulnerable population facing an even more complex set of barriers and challenges in addition to the typical challenges associated with identity development in adolescence. However, multiple factors have been explored …

Large Deformable Soft Actuators Using Dielectric Elastomer And Origami Inspired Structures, Jangho Park Nov 2019

Large Deformable Soft Actuators Using Dielectric Elastomer And Origami Inspired Structures, Jangho Park

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

There have been significant developments in the field of robotics. Significant development consists of new configurations, control mechanisms, and actuators based upon its applications. Despite significant improvements in modern robotics, the biologically inspired robots has taken the center stage. Inspired by nature, biologically inspired robots are called ‘soft robots’. Within these robots lies a secret ingredient: the actuator. Soft robotic development has been driven by the idea of developing actuators that are like human muscle and are known as ‘artificial muscle’. Among different materials suitable for the development of artificial muscle, the dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) is capable of large …
