A Comprehensive Review Of Anaerobic Digestion Of Organic Solid Wastes In Relation To Microbial Community And Enhancement Process, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang, Xiaoying Lu

Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering

Organic solid wastes (OSWs) should be regarded as valuable resources rather than dead-end landfill waste that causes public health and odor concerns. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an ideal approach for managing organic solid waste issues and involves using a group of anaerobic microorganisms to transformOSWs into useful products. In this review, over 100 publications related toADofOSWs have been compiled, discussed, and analyzed.Acomprehensive analysis of the environmental and safety impacts of AD, its key environmental factors, co-digestion, and pretreatment, as well as the AD of OSWs by various anaerobic microbes uncovered by high throughput sequencing-based approaches, is presented. The purpose of …

Educating For Ecological Responsibility: Bernard Lonergan, Pope Francis, And A Local Case Study Prompted By A Global Reality, Jame Schaefer Jan 2019

Educating For Ecological Responsibility: Bernard Lonergan, Pope Francis, And A Local Case Study Prompted By A Global Reality, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Bernard Lonergan’s philosophy of knowing and Pope Francis’s magisterial teachings yield a complementary trajectory toward educating for ecological responsibility. A concrete example was demonstrated by students in the capstone seminar required for the Interdisciplinary Minor in Environmental Ethics (INEE) at Marquette University in Spring 2017. After exploring Lonergan’s explanation of responsibility, his philosophy of education in which he underscores the need to integrate different ways of knowing, and the pope’s call for “integral ecology” when addressing and acting on ecological problems, the INEE seminar and its outcomes are described. They demonstrate local ways in which individuals and their religious communities …

Storied Feelings: Emotions, Culture, Media, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D. Jan 2019

Storied Feelings: Emotions, Culture, Media, E. Deidre Pribram Ph.D.

Communications: Faculty Publications

Mass mediated emotional experiences are central to late modern subjectivity. Narrative storytelling creates public sites where audiences encounter and negotiate shared sociocultural circumstances rendered in aesthetic terms. Popular narratives move us by providing access, through felt recognition, to aspects of our emotional existence that would otherwise remain inexpressible. Using examples from film, this chapter explores how emotions as public events, constituted as part of collectively experienced social, cultural, and historical conditions, are enacted or realized through narrative media.

Dealing With Diversity: State Strategies On Ethnic Minority Management In Southeast Asia, Hansley A. Juliano, Matthew David D. Ordoñez, Antonio Gabriel M. La Viña Jan 2019

Dealing With Diversity: State Strategies On Ethnic Minority Management In Southeast Asia, Hansley A. Juliano, Matthew David D. Ordoñez, Antonio Gabriel M. La Viña

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

Southeast Asia’s ethnic, political and cultural diversity continues to pose major policy and governance hurdles in enforcing a common community born out of the post-colonial nationalist baggage of almost all the region’s countries. ASEAN’s “non-interference” clause gives leeway to each member state to respond to its ethnic diversity with nation-building projects through exclusionary governance. With this leeway, each Southeast Asian country’s nation-building policies
legitimize a particular, existing ethno-nationalist or “ethno-religious” majority at the expense of democratic accountability. This study proposes a preliminary quantitative model which uses regression analysis to compare Southeast Asian countries’ data on their religious and ethnic populations. …

Ecological Consequences Of Sea Star Wasting Disease: Non-Consumptive Effects And Trait-Mediated Indirect Interactions From Pisaster Ochraceus, Timothy Ian Mcclure Jan 2019

Ecological Consequences Of Sea Star Wasting Disease: Non-Consumptive Effects And Trait-Mediated Indirect Interactions From Pisaster Ochraceus, Timothy Ian Mcclure

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Consumptive effects (CEs) of predators are an important factor in structuring biological communities, but further work is needed to understand how the interaction between spatial and temporal differences in predator density affects non-consumptive effects (NCEs) on prey. NCEs can cause indirect effects on food resources, known as trait-mediated indirect interactions (TMIIs), and thus can also affect community structure. However, few studies have considered the relationships between spatial and temporal predator density variation and the strength of NCEs and TMIIs in the natural environment. The ochre star Pisaster ochraceus is common predator of the herbivorous black turban snail Tegula funebralis, imposing …

Mechanisms And Spatial Patterns Of Bark Beetle-Associated Mortality Following Variable Density Thinning Treatments In A Sierra Mixed-Conifer Forest, Alexis Bernal Jan 2019

Mechanisms And Spatial Patterns Of Bark Beetle-Associated Mortality Following Variable Density Thinning Treatments In A Sierra Mixed-Conifer Forest, Alexis Bernal

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Long-term trends of tree mortality have increased over the last several decades, coinciding with above-average temperatures, high climatic water deficits, and bark beetle outbreaks. With the anticipation that drought and bark beetles may increase with climate change, uncertainty exists over the appropriate treatments that could ensure the future sustainability of forest resources and the ecosystem services that forests provide. Conventional thinning treatments are used to reduce stand density, with the assumption that reductions in competition can alleviate drought stress and enable trees to resist bark beetle attack. Alternative thinning treatments may also reduce stand density, but have a greater focus …

Autumn Roost Selection By Male Hoary Bats (Lasiurus Cinereus) In Northern California, Danielle (Skye) Salganek Jan 2019

Autumn Roost Selection By Male Hoary Bats (Lasiurus Cinereus) In Northern California, Danielle (Skye) Salganek

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The hoary bat, Lasiurus cinereus, is a solitary bat that roosts in the foliage of trees throughout the western hemisphere. Roosts are subject to the ambient temperature of their surroundings, thus hoary bats undergo long-distance migrations between summer and winter ranges to avoid freezing temperatures. Habitat selection has been studied during the summer for maternal female hoary bats, but not during migration and winter. Autumn migration coincides with the hoary bat mating period and it has been proposed that male and female bats may rendezvous on migration paths. Individuals may select roosts in stopover locations that enhance fitness by providing …

Reserve, Symptoms, Sex, And Outcome Following A Single Sports-Related Concussion, Summer A. Thornfeldt Jan 2019

Reserve, Symptoms, Sex, And Outcome Following A Single Sports-Related Concussion, Summer A. Thornfeldt

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Reserve refers to the biological/cognitive differences between individuals that protect against cognitive changes following a single sports-related concussion (SRC). A single SRC can lead to brain damage and a loss of reserve. The ImPACT is a neurocognitive test which was used as a proxy for reserve. The Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS), a symptom checklist, was used to examine symptoms. It was hypothesized that pre-SRC reserve would affect post-SRC reserve, so that those with higher pre-SRC reserves would demonstrate less change in their reserve after a single SRC compared to those with low pre-SRC reserves. It was also hypothesized that females …

Shade Trees Preserve Avian Insectivore Biodiversity On Coffee Farms In A Warming Climate, Sarah L. Schooler Jan 2019

Shade Trees Preserve Avian Insectivore Biodiversity On Coffee Farms In A Warming Climate, Sarah L. Schooler

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Coffee is an important export in many developing countries, with a global annual trade value of $100 billion. Climate change is projected to drastically reduce the area where coffee is able to be grown. Shade trees may mitigate the effects of climate change through temperature regulation for coffee growth, temperature regulation for pest control, and increase in pest-eating bird diversity. The impact of shade on bird diversity and microclimate on coffee farms has been studied extensively in the Neotropics, but there is a dearth of research in the Paleotropics. I examined the local effects of shade on bird presence and …

Achromatic Plumage Patch Quality: Internal Organ And Skeletal Correlates In Aleutian Cackling Geese (Branta Hutchinsii Leucopareia), Matthew D. Delgado Jan 2019

Achromatic Plumage Patch Quality: Internal Organ And Skeletal Correlates In Aleutian Cackling Geese (Branta Hutchinsii Leucopareia), Matthew D. Delgado

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Sexual selection theory predicts unique plumage patches signaling quality or status evolve via mate-choice and competition for mates. A growing body of research supports evidence that achromatic plumage patches may act as honest indicators of quality. Irregularities in these patches are attributed to an individual’s phenotypic and genotypic quality as well as environmental wear and tear. Aleutian cackling geese (Branta hutchinsii leucopareia) display achromatic plumage patches on their heads and necks, which may signal information about an individual’s attributes. I tested the honest advertisement and status signaling hypotheses by determining whether size and irregularities in the transition between …

Density And Distribution Of Piscivorous Fishes In The Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta, Christopher M. Loomis Jan 2019

Density And Distribution Of Piscivorous Fishes In The Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta, Christopher M. Loomis

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Predatory fishes, including numerous introduced species, are common to the Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta, but abundance data for most species is insufficient to determine the Delta-wide distribution and ecological impacts of these species. Predatory fishes (e.g. Striped Bass, Largemouth Bass have long been suspected of contributing to the decline of native species, including salmonids, but data has been insufficient to investigate this hypothesis. In this study, I present a novel method to assess predator fish populations across the southern Delta using DIDSON acoustic cameras and analyze the environmental associations that form the landscape and fine-scale distribution of predatory fishes. …

Multidecadal Change In Aspen Experiencing Long-Unburned, Mixed-Severity Wildfire, And Reburn Disturbance Regimes, Cerena Brewen Jan 2019

Multidecadal Change In Aspen Experiencing Long-Unburned, Mixed-Severity Wildfire, And Reburn Disturbance Regimes, Cerena Brewen

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a valued, minor component on western landscapes. It provides a wide range of ecosystem services, and has been in decline for the last century. This decline may be explained partially by the lack of fire on the landscape as aspen benefit from fire that eliminates conifer competition and stimulates reproduction through root suckering. Managers are interested in aspen restoration but have a lack of knowledge about their spatial dynamics in response to fire. Improving our understanding of aspen stand spatial changes over time may be important for maintaining their presence on landscapes where …

Justice And Public Health, Govind Persad Jan 2019

Justice And Public Health, Govind Persad

Publications

This chapter discusses how justice applies to public health. It begins by outlining three different metrics employed in discussions of justice: resources, capabilities, and welfare. It then discusses different accounts of justice in distribution, reviewing utilitarianism, egalitarianism, prioritarianism, and sufficientarianism, as well as desert-based theories, and applies these distributive approaches to public health examples. Next, it examines the interplay between distributive justice and individual rights, such as religious rights, property rights, and rights against discrimination, by discussing examples such as mandatory treatment and screening. The chapter also examines the nexus between public health and debates concerning whose interests matter to …

Privatizing The Reservation?, Kristen A. Carpenter, Angela R. Riley Jan 2019

Privatizing The Reservation?, Kristen A. Carpenter, Angela R. Riley

Publications

The problems of American Indian poverty and reservation living conditions have inspired various explanations. One response advanced by some economists and commentators, which may be gaining traction within the Trump Administration, calls for the “privatization” of Indian lands. Proponents of this view contend that reservation poverty is rooted in the federal Indian trust arrangement, which preserves the tribal land base by limiting the marketability of lands within reservations. In order to maximize wealth on reservations, policymakers are advocating for measures that would promote the individuation and alienability of tribal lands, while diminishing federal and tribal oversight.

Taking a different view, …

The Role Of Lysophosphatidic Acid In The Pathogenesis Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma / Mariati Abdul Rahman, Abdul Rahman Mariati

Student Works (2010-2019)

Oral squamous cell carcinoma continues (OSCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and accounts for 300,000 new cases yearly with a five-year survival rate of approximately 50%. Current treatment relies on surgery combined with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Major challenges include late presentation, treatment resistance, second primary tumours and other co-morbidities. Thus, there is a compelling need to develop novel therapeutic strategies to improve prognosis and reduce the late burden of the disease and a further understanding into the molecular pathogenesis of the disease could ultimately lead to better management strategies. This study investigated the role of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) …

Protein Profiling Of Candida Albicans Planktonic And Biofilm Cultures Upon Exposure To Aureobasidin / Komathy Munusamy, Munusamy Komathy

Student Works (2010-2019)

Candidiasis is a fungal infection leading to significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Aureobasidin (AbA), a cyclic depsipeptide antifungal drug, has been reported to be effective against Candida albicans but is yet to be used for therapy. Although AbA is presumed to target the fungal sphingolipid biosynthesis, the exact mechanism of action has yet to be defined. As a prerequisite to study the mechanism of action of this antifungal drug, this study investigated changes in the proteome of planktonic and biofilm cultures of C. albicans upon exposure to AbA. In this study, the whole cell extracts of biofilm and …

Evaluating Presence Of Antibodies Against Citrullinated Proteins In Relation To Rheumatoid Arthritis And Periodontitis / Lew Pit Hui, Pit Hui Lew Jan 2019

Evaluating Presence Of Antibodies Against Citrullinated Proteins In Relation To Rheumatoid Arthritis And Periodontitis / Lew Pit Hui, Pit Hui Lew

Student Works (2010-2019)

Background and objective(s): Presence of antibodies against citrullinated proteins (antiCitP) are highly specific for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Recent studies have revealed the occurrence of citrullination in periodontitis (PD) which can induce anti-CitP production, allowing for a potential link between PD and development of RA. However, conflicting findings have been reported to associate RA and PD in relation to the expression of antiCitP. This study aimed to compare the presence of serum anti-CitP with clinical periodontal and RA parameters in patients with RA and/or PD. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 participants were recruited, each of 20 from those diagnosed …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Reusable Magnetic Tio2/Chitosan/Fe3o4 Nanocomposite For The Photocatalytic Degradation Of Ortho Nitrophenol Pollutant / Saba Afzal, Afzal Saba

Student Works (2010-2019)

Designing a Titanium Oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles based catalyst with improved photocatalytic activity in visible region of light with efficient recycling ability is desirable. As TiO2 is one of the most attractive materials in nanotechnology due to its superior photo-catalytic oxidation ability, non-photo-corrosive and nontoxic nature. Despite of its excellent properties, the problems of rapid electron hole pair recombination, wide band gap and poor catalyst reusability narrows the applications of TiO2 nano particles. The present research aims to synthesize titanium dioxide-chitosan-magnetite (TiO2/CS/Fe3O4) nano composite with enhanced adsorption characteristics, minimize electron hole pair recombination of TiO2, improves activity in visible region of …

Abstract Background Variability in standard-of-care classifications precludes accurate predictions of early tumor recurrence for individual patients with meningioma, limiting the appropriate selection of patients who would benefit from adjuvant radiotherapy to delay recurrence. We aimed to develop an individualized prediction model of early recurrence risk combining clinical and molecular factors in meningioma. Methods DNA methylation profiles of clinically annotated tumor samples across multiple institutions were used to develop a methylome model of 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS). Subsequently, a 5-year meningioma recurrence score was generated using a nomogram that integrated the methylome model with established prognostic clinical factors. Performance of both …

Gravel Beach Cross- And Alongshore Response To An Extreme Event: Beach Length And Headland Proximity Controls, Rj Mccarroll, G Masselink, M Wiggins, Tim Scott, O Billson, D Conley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Gravel beach morphologic change is a function of combined cross- and alongshore transport. At present, numerical methods deal with these processes separately. We present observations from Start Bay, UK, of extreme storm response and recovery, across five gravel subembayments (lengths 250 m to 5 km). An easterly storm sequence in Feb-Mar 2018 forced massive alongshore transport (rotation and headland bypassing) and cross-shore transport including erosion of the barrier, destruction of barrier-crest roads, and distribution of material offshore. We demonstrate that profile response is a function of embayment length and headland proximity, such that: (i) pocket embayments (~250 m) experience a …

River ecosystems receive and process vast quantities of terrestrial organic carbon, the fate of which depends strongly on microbial activity. Variation in and controls of processing rates, however, are poorly characterized at the global scale. In response, we used a peer-sourced research network and a highly standardized carbon processing assay to conduct a global-scale field experiment in greater than 1000 river and riparian sites. We found that Earth’s biomes have distinct carbon processing signatures. Slow processing is evident across latitudes, whereas rapid rates are restricted to lower latitudes. Both the mean rate and variability decline with latitude, suggesting temperature constraints …

Numerical data in biology and medicine are commonly presented as mean or median with error or confidence limits, to the exclusion of individual values. Analysis of our own and others’ data indicates that this practice risks excluding ‘Goldilocks’ effects in which a biological variable falls within a range between ‘too much’ and ‘too little’ with a region between where its function is ‘just right’; a concept captured by the Swedish term ‘Lagom’. This was confirmed by a narrative search of the literature using the PubMed database, which revealed numerous relationships of biological and clinical phenomena of the Goldilocks/Lagom form including …
