Synthesis And Antitumor Activities Of 2-(Piperidin-4-Yl)-Thiazole-4-Carboxamides Analogues Of Tubulysins, Xiangfu Peng, Mingsha Shao, Shuchao Ma, Lei Yao Jan 2019

Synthesis And Antitumor Activities Of 2-(Piperidin-4-Yl)-Thiazole-4-Carboxamides Analogues Of Tubulysins, Xiangfu Peng, Mingsha Shao, Shuchao Ma, Lei Yao

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

}Tubulysins are a family of natural products that exhibit potent antitumor activities, which have attracted much attention from synthetic and medicinal chemists. Previous attempts to aromatize the Tuv part of tubulysin analogues led to a loss in antitumor activity, which suggested that the Ile and Tuv fragments of these analogues were adopting different conformations than the natural products. In this study, a series of 2-(piperidin-4-yl)-thiazole-4-carboxamides have been prepared to investigate whether an intramolecular H-bond between key NH and OH groups is responsible for the conformational control. The antitumor activities of these analogues have been screened using MDA-MB-231-breast, Siha-cervical, MCF7-breast, and …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Curcuminoids, reported to have important biological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-Alzheimer, and antidiabetic properties, comprise curcumin (CRM; 1,7-bis [4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and its derivatives demethoxycurcumin (DMC; (E,6E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxy-cyclohexyl)-7-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC; 1,7-bis[4-hydroxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione). Their electrochemical oxidations are thoroughly explored by applying cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric techniques. The dependence of current intensities and potentials on pH, concentration, scan rate, and nature of the buffer was investigated. The outcome is supported by density functional theory computations indicating the transfer of 4-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, 6-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, and 8-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$ couples involved in the oxidation mechanisms of CRM, DMC, and BDMC, respectively, leading to the formation of the same oxidized product.

Methyl-Substituted 2-Aminothiazole--Based Cobalt(Ii) And Silver(I) Complexes: Synthesis, X-Ray Structures, And Biological Activities, Ezzat Khan, Tufail Ahmad, Zarif Gul, Farhat Ullah, Muhammad Nawaz Tahir, Awal Noor

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

2-Aminothiazole derivatives bear three nucleophilic centers, i.e. endocyclic N, exocyclic NH$_{2}$, and S atom in the ring system. In addition to these centers there are $\pi$-electrons in the ring system which can also expectedly be involved in some sort of coordination. To the best of our knowledge the solid state coordination chemistry of such ligands has not been fully presented in the literature. These ligands (2-amino-4-methylthiazole and 2-amino-5-methylthiazole) were coupled with CoCl$_{2}$ under aerobic conditions to form tetrahedral complexes, bis(2-amino-4-methylthiazole)dichlorocobalt(II) (1) and bis(2-amino-5-methylthiazole)dichlorocobalt(II) (2). Reaction of 2-amino-5-methylthiazole with AgNO$_{3}$ led to an expected two-coordinated, bis(2-amino-5-methylthiazole)silver(I) nitrate (3) as crystalline material. …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Adsorption Of Long Pyrene-Peg Chains On A Thin Carbon Nanotube, Peli̇n Deni̇z Akkuş, Ayşe Özge Kürkçüoğlu Levi̇tas

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Carbon nanotubes have emerged as highly promising theranostic agents due to their unique structural/physical features, high surface area, and high drug-loading capacity. The high cytotoxicity of carbon nanotubes can be eliminated by noncovalent coating using hydrophilic polymers. We investigated the adsorption of long pyrene functionalized polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains, PEG$_{2000}$ and PEG$_{5000}$, on a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) from a crowded solution. Full-atom molecular dynamics simulations in explicit water were used to mimic the experimental conditions of noncovalent PEGylation with a stoichiometry of one SWNT to ten pyrene-PEG. Although the diffusional behavior of the pyrene molecules still attached to the …

Developing And Modeling Scaffold Free Vascular Constructs, Sanket Pattanaik

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Despite a strong clinical demand for tissue replacement therapies, few tissue-engineered constructs (TECs) have attained FDA approval. Fewer still demonstrate long term viability of implanted cells, with root causes of failure of these devices identified as poor cell retention, poor vascularization, and inflammation following implantation. Focusing on the first two of these issues, we attempt to create a rapidly vascularizable TEC by optimizing a novel vascular implant model developed in our laboratory: the scaffold-free, prevascular endothelial-fibroblast construct (SPEC). The optimization process calls on a hybrid in vivo, in vitro, and in silico approach. We first developed an in vivo temporal …

Digital Image Processing And Metabolic Parameter Linearity To Noninvasively Detect Analyte Concentration, Joseph Allen Jr Jan 2019

Digital Image Processing And Metabolic Parameter Linearity To Noninvasively Detect Analyte Concentration, Joseph Allen Jr

Theses and Dissertations

Spectroscopy is the scientific technique of quantifying and measuring electromagnetic, or light, reflectance or absorption. Atoms emit and/or absorb light when light passes through. The excitations provide specific energy signatures that relate to the element that is emitting or absorbing the light. Non-invasive biosensors monitor physical health properties such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, and tissue blood flow as a result of spectroscopy. Several attempts have been made to non-invasively detect metabolic chemical, or analyte, concentration with various spectroscopic techniques. The primary limitation is due to signal-to-noise ratio. This research focuses on a unique method that combines emission spectroscopy and …

The Mythology Of Sanctuary Cities, Kit Johnson Jan 2019

The Mythology Of Sanctuary Cities, Kit Johnson

Faculty Articles

Sanctuary jurisdictions — be they cities, counties, or states — employ various means of disentangling local law enforcement from federal civil immigration enforcement. Much of the criticism directed at these “sanctuary cities” revolves around a set of myths — such as that these jurisdictions are lawless or dangerous. This Essay identifies nine myths about sanctuary cities and subjects each to a fact-based shakedown.

Owning Colors, Deborah Gerhardt, Jon J. Lee Jan 2019

Owning Colors, Deborah Gerhardt, Jon J. Lee

Faculty Articles

Color is powerful. Historically, colors have been invested with mystical, symbolic, and religious significance. We are biologically wired to respond to color cues. A particular color may stimulate emotion, activate memory, and influence perception of the passage of time. Yet the omnipresence of color in our visual world is just the beginning of the story. We have learned to attach many meanings to colors through our lived experiences. Colors have become heuristics for even our abstract ideas. They connect communities. They unite and divide sports fans. They may be shorthand for gender identity, sexual orientation, race, and political identity. Although …

Method Development And Optimization For The Recovery Of Carbohydrates From A Microalga Species Of Chlorella Vulgaris By Combined Physical And Chemical Pre-Treatments, William Richard Hammann Jan 2019

Method Development And Optimization For The Recovery Of Carbohydrates From A Microalga Species Of Chlorella Vulgaris By Combined Physical And Chemical Pre-Treatments, William Richard Hammann

Theses and Dissertations

A key focus of microalgae-based fuels/chemicals research and development has been on the lipids that many strains generate, but recent studies show that solely recovering these lipids may not be cost competitive with fossil-derived processes. However, if the carbohydrates can also be recovered and ultimately converted into useful chemical intermediates, this may improve the economics for microalgae-based sustainable product technologies.

In the present work, physical and chemical pre-treatments were performed on the Chlorella vulgaris microalgae strain to recover the carbohydrates from the biomass. A central composite design approach was used to optimize hydrolysis conditions including temperature, acid concentration, microalgae solid-to-liquid …

Collegiate Aviation Pilots: Analyses Of Fatigue Related Decision-Making Scenarios, Julius Keller, Flavio Coimbra Mendonca Mr, Jason E. Cutter Jan 2019

Collegiate Aviation Pilots: Analyses Of Fatigue Related Decision-Making Scenarios, Julius Keller, Flavio Coimbra Mendonca Mr, Jason E. Cutter

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

According to Dawson and McCulloch (2005), indicating factors for pilot fatigue may be difficult to ascertain. However, fatigue is a probable cause in 15%-20% of all aircraft accidents (Akerstedt, 2000). It may be assumed fatigue has been important latent condition for many of the general aviation incidents and or accidents but not necessarily identified as a probable cause. Events that barely missed a detrimental situation due to fatigue, often go unnoticed and or unreported. Furthermore, fatigue can influence the quality of flight instruction and flight operations overall. The purpose of the current paper was to examine fatigue related decision-making responses …

Determination Of Parameters During Quasi-Steady Stall Maneuver Using Genetic Algorithm, Ambuj Srivastava, Ajit Kumar, Ajoy Kanti Ghosh Jan 2019

Determination Of Parameters During Quasi-Steady Stall Maneuver Using Genetic Algorithm, Ambuj Srivastava, Ajit Kumar, Ajoy Kanti Ghosh

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The current work offers the determination of longitudinal aerodynamic derivatives during flight manoeuver at angles of attack near the stall. The flight manoeuver near stall is highly non-linear in nature due to separated flow at such elevated angles of attack. Kirchoff’s model for Quasi-Steady Stall Modelling (QSSM) is employed to represent the non-linear nature of aerodynamics during flight manoeuver at elevated angles of attack close to the stall. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimized output error method is utilized for estimating the parameters specific to stall characteristics and longitudinal aerodynamics of the ATTAS aircraft. The comparative evaluation of the parameter estimates …

Computation Of Eclipse Time For Low-Earth Orbiting Small Satellites, Sumanth R M Jan 2019

Computation Of Eclipse Time For Low-Earth Orbiting Small Satellites, Sumanth R M

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

This paper addresses a method for computing eclipse and daylight time for satellites in LEO. Continuous health-monitoring of the satellite is required for the success the mission. For this, the satellites are primarily powered by solar energy but during the eclipse time, the satellite’s functioning is affected as it cannot generate power during this period and also, its temperature drops rapidly. To tackle these issues, computing eclipse time for satellites becomes essential so as to plan for sizing its secondary power source for continuous functioning. In this work, eclipse time is being computed and it is shown that eclipse time …

Dialogic Teaching In A Detracked High School Ela Class: "We Talk Here", Signy Emler Jan 2019

Dialogic Teaching In A Detracked High School Ela Class: "We Talk Here", Signy Emler

Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation combines the two fields of dialogic teaching and detracking in a study of one teacher’s English Language Arts high school classroom. The policy of tracking students into separate academic classes perpetuates segregation and is antithetical to the principles of democracy. Dialogic teaching is where students and the teacher engage in inquiry and exploratory talk to co-construct knowledge, and all students are provided with frequent opportunities to express their voices. Grounded in theory that views language and identity as socially constructed and situated, this qualitative case study examined how students from different racial, socio-economic, political and cultural backgrounds worked …

Effects Of Urea And Distillers Inclusion In Finishing Diets On Steer Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Bradley M. Boyd, James C. Macdonald, Matthew K. Luebbe, Galen E. Erickson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplemental urea in dry rolled corn based finishing diets containing low inclusions of distillers grains. Treatments were set up in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement. The first factor was wet distillers inclusion at either 10, 15, or 20% of diet DM. The second factor was urea inclusion at either 0, 0.5, or 1.0% of diet dry matter. Increasing inclusion of distillers linearly improved feed conversion and linearly reduced dry matter intake. An interaction for feed efficiency was observed where there was no effect of added urea when 10% or 20% …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Winter wheat is susceptible to several fungal pathogens throughout the growing season and foliar fungicide application is one of the strategies used in the management of fungal diseases in winter wheat. However, for fungicides to be profitable, weather conditions conducive to fungal disease development should be present. To determine if winter wheat yield response to fungicide application at the flowering growth stage (Feekes 10.5.1) was related to the growing season precipitation, grain yield from fungicide treated plots was compared to non-treated plots for 19 to 30 hard red winter wheat cultivars planted at 8 site years from 2011 through 2015. …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Traditional agricultural research and extension relies on replicated field experiments, on-farm trials, and demonstration plots to evaluate and adapt agronomic technologies that aim to increase productivity, reduce risk, and protect the environment for a given biophysical and socio-economic context. To date, these efforts lack a generic and robust spatial framework for ex-ante assessment that: (i) provides strategic insight to guide decisions about the number and location of testing sites, (ii) define the target domain for scaling-out a given technology or technology package, and (iii) estimate potential impact from widespread adoption of the technology(ies) being evaluated. In this study, we developed …

Nebraska’S Natural Resource District System: Collaborative Approaches To Adaptive Groundwater Quality Governance, Gregory N. Sixt, Laurens Klerkx, J. David Aiken, Timothy S. Griffin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Nonpoint source pollution of groundwater by nitrates from agricultural activity is a persistent problem for which developing effective policy approaches has proven difficult. There is little empirical information on forms of governance or regime attributes that effectively and sustainably address agricultural nonpoint source pollution of groundwater. Nebraska’s Natural Resource District (NRD) system is a rare example of a groundwater governance regime that is putting programmes in place that are likely to generate sustainable groundwater quality outcomes. We focus on three groundwater nitrate management programmes in the state that collectively represent the broader NRD system. The research shows that four elements …
