Catch Composition And Selectivity Of Fishing Gears In A Multi-Species Indonesian Coral Reef Fishery, Austin T. Humphries, Kelvin D. Gorospe, Paul G. Carvalho, Irfan Yulianto, Tasrif Kartawijaya, Stuart J. Campbell

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

There are millions of small-scale fishers worldwide that rely on coral reefs for their livelihood. Yields from many of these coral reef fisheries, however, have been declining. In Indonesia and other coral reefs worldwide, management approaches are dominated by marine protected areas but other options including gear-restrictions may be feasible and more adaptive to local ecological and social conditions. Yet, there is little data on the impacts and selectivity of fishing gears for coral reef fisheries. In this paper, we present results from a case study on the island of Lombok, where we examine the selectivity and overlap in catch …

Modification Of Lipid Microenvironments On Solid Support Structures For Use In Transmembrane Protein Assays, William J. Houlihan Jan 2019

Modification Of Lipid Microenvironments On Solid Support Structures For Use In Transmembrane Protein Assays, William J. Houlihan

Dissertations and Theses

Gamma-Secretase (γ-secretase) is a transmembrane protease of increasing interest, which has been shown to have significant connections to both cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. γ-secretase cleaves both Notch-1, a transmembrane signaling protein, and Amyloid precursor protein (APP), a transmembrane protein whose cleavage may result in the formation of β-amyloid plaques in the brain. Notch-1 and APP are widely studied proteins that have substantial impacts on the development and proliferation of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, respectively. Notch-1 partakes in the signaling of apoptosis in damaged and mutated cells, thus its cleavage by γ-secretase within the plasma membrane has ramifications on cell growth …

Optimizing Crispr/Cas9 Gene Targeting To Investigate Cone Photoreceptor Development In The Chick Retina, Diana Y. Kim Jan 2019

Optimizing Crispr/Cas9 Gene Targeting To Investigate Cone Photoreceptor Development In The Chick Retina, Diana Y. Kim

Dissertations and Theses

Many human eye conditions result in the loss of vision, due to the degeneration of cone photoreceptors in the retina. Thus, the development of methods to regenerate these cone photoreceptors is an active area of study. In order to find ways to regenerate cones, the molecular pathways and gene regulatory networks that a retinal progenitor cell takes to develop into a postmitotic cone photoreceptor needs to be well understood. In an attempt to answer this question, this paper studies the effect of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis of two key transcription factors, Otx2 and Nr2e3, on retinal progenitor cells and cone photoreceptors throughout …

This research was conducted because the uncertainty in the tax amnesty policy. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of taxpayer’s expectation of future tax amnesty, tariff period system, tax penalty and audit towards tax compliance in tax amnesty policy, using experimental economics. The result shows that, a tax amnesty followed by strict audit and tax penalties will rise tax compliance. Tax amnesty policy is best applied once in a lifetime, because the expectation of the taxpayers towards future tax amnesty will result in lowering the compliance. Taxpayers prefer the lowest rate on tariff period.

The Limits Of Legal Evolution: Knowledge And Normativity In Theories Of Legal Change, Liam Mchugh-Russell Jan 2019

The Limits Of Legal Evolution: Knowledge And Normativity In Theories Of Legal Change, Liam Mchugh-Russell

PhD Dissertations

Over the last forty years, legal theory and policy advice have come to draw heavily from an ‘evolutionary’ jurisprudence that explains legal transformation by drawing inspiration from the theoretical successes of Darwinian natural selection. This project seeks to enrich and critique this tradition using an analytical perspective that emphasizes the material consequences of concepts and ideas. Existing theories of legal evolution depend on a positivist epistemology that strictly distinguishes the objects of social life — interests, institutions, systems — from knowledge about those objects. My dissertation explores how knowledge, and especially non-legal expertise, acts as an independent site and locus …

Fear Effect In Prey And Hunting Cooperation Among Predators In A Leslie-Gower Model, Saheb Pal, Nikhil Pal, Sudip Samanta, Joydev Chattopadhyay Jan 2019

Fear Effect In Prey And Hunting Cooperation Among Predators In A Leslie-Gower Model, Saheb Pal, Nikhil Pal, Sudip Samanta, Joydev Chattopadhyay

Journal Articles

The predation strategy for predators and the avoidance strategy of prey are important topics in ecology and evolutionary biology. Both prey and predators adjust their behaviours in order to gain the maximal benefits and to increase their biomass for each. In the present paper, we consider a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model where predators cooperate during hunting and due to fear of predation risk, prey populations show anti-predator behaviour. We investigate step by step the impact of hunting cooperation and fear effect on the dynamics of the system. We observe that in the absence of fear effect, hunting cooperation can induce …

Hearing Threshold And Its Concomitants Among Santal Stone Mine Workers Of Birbhum District, West Bengal, India, Biswanath Malakar, Akash Mallick, Subrata Kumar Roy, Arpita Santra

Journal Articles

Background: Hearing impairment is one of the major health problems under the paradigm of occupational health. Mine workers are vulnerable to hearing impairment due to the nature of work, inadequate knowledge of sound hazards and limited access to protective devices. However, the cause of such health problems in India have rarely been explored. Present study aimed to find out hearing threshold of the study population, the level of noise in the mine areas and the relationship of different concomitants on hearing thresholds of the workers. Methods: Cross-sectional data on audiometric measurements, age and work duration in stone mining work were …

Enhancing Synchrony In Multiplex Network Due To Rewiring Frequency, Sarbendu Rakshit, Bidesh K. Bera, Jürgen Kurths, Dibakar Ghosh Jan 2019

Enhancing Synchrony In Multiplex Network Due To Rewiring Frequency, Sarbendu Rakshit, Bidesh K. Bera, Jürgen Kurths, Dibakar Ghosh

Journal Articles

Most of the previous studies on synchrony in multiplex networks have been investigated using different types of intralayer network architectures which are either static or temporal. Effect of a temporal layer on intralayer synchrony in a multilayered network still remains elusive. In this paper, we discuss intralayer synchrony in a multiplex network consisting of static and temporal layers and how a temporal layer influences other static layers to enhance synchrony simultaneously. We analytically derive local stability conditions for intralayer synchrony based on the master stability function approach. The analytically derived results are illustrated by numerical simulations on up to five-layers …

Spatio-Temporal Patterns Of Climatic Niche Dynamics Of An Invasive Plant Mikania Micrantha Kunth And Its Potential Distribution Under Projected Climate Change, Achyut Kumar Banerjee, Abhishek Mukherjee, Wuxia Guo, Ying Liu, Yelin Huang Jan 2019

Spatio-Temporal Patterns Of Climatic Niche Dynamics Of An Invasive Plant Mikania Micrantha Kunth And Its Potential Distribution Under Projected Climate Change, Achyut Kumar Banerjee, Abhishek Mukherjee, Wuxia Guo, Ying Liu, Yelin Huang

Journal Articles

Similarity of climatic niches occupied by a species in its native and invasive ranges has been recognized as one of the key factors for successful invasion. Accounting for changes in climatic niche over time may provide better understanding of the dynamic biological invasion process. We investigated these changes for an invasive alien plant Mikania micrantha in South and Southeast Asia, Australia, Oceania and parts of the USA. Based on documented occurrences over 200 years (1800–2017), we reconstructed the introduction history of the species and estimated climatic niche dynamics for the presumed invasion routes. We estimated niche conservatism and the environmental …

Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya Jan 2019

Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya

Journal Articles

In this paper, we consider the problem of multiple testing where the hypotheses are dependent. In most of the existing literature, either Bayesian or non-Bayesian, the decision rules mainly focus on the validity of the test procedure rather than actually utilizing the dependency to increase efficiency. Moreover, the decisions regarding different hypotheses are marginal in the sense that they do not depend upon each other directly. However, in realistic situations, the hypotheses are usually dependent, and hence it is desirable that the decisions regarding the dependent hypotheses are taken jointly. In this article, we develop a novel Bayesian multiple testing …

Western Australian Feral Pig Strategy 2020-2025, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Jan 2019

Western Australian Feral Pig Strategy 2020-2025, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

Management of invasive species is an important component of biosecurity. For species already established in Western Australia (WA), including feral pigs, effective management aims to reduce the impacts of those populations and detect occurrences of new populations, thereby preventing further harm to the State’s agriculture and biodiversity. Effective management also includes monitoring the density and distribution of established populations to define their boundaries and determine the effectiveness of control programs.

The foundations for a national biosecurity framework were established in 2007, with the development of the inaugural Australian Pest Animal Strategy (APAS). The Feral Pig Strategy (this Strategy) outlines the …

Associations Between Fgm/C And Hiv In Ethiopia, The Gambia, Kenya, And Sierra Leone: A Limited Analysis Of Demographic And Health Survey Data, Yetunde A. Noah Pinheiro, Zhuzhi Moore, David Gathara

Reproductive Health

Studies investigating the association between male circumcision and HIV have demonstrated the protective effect of male circumcision. In some settings, FGM/C and male circumcision are considered “equivalent” procedures. This working paper presents findings of a study that investigates the effect of FGM/C on the likelihood of HIV infection for women in practicing communities in Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, and Sierra Leone.

Hypertensive Disorders In Pregnancy: Assessing Postnatal Quality Of Care And Outcomes For Women And Their Infants In Bangladesh, Sharif M.I. Hossain, Kanij Sultana, Salma Rouf, Rabeya Akter, Shongkour Roy, Sumaiya Anwar, Karen Kirk, Charlotte E. Warren

Reproductive Health

Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDPs) are the second leading cause of maternal mortality in Bangladesh, responsible for 24 percent of maternal deaths. Various factors, such as lack of health-care provider capacities for detecting, preventing, and managing pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E), late referrals, late (or lack of) antenatal care (ANC), and poor awareness of PE/E, are factors in most of these deaths. While some information was available on the prenatal and postnatal periods, an evidence gap existed in information after delivery through the first year postnatal, and beyond. In this prospective cohort study, the Ending Eclampsia project recruited married women ages …
