Acoustic Methods For Mapping And Characterizing Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Using A Multibeam Echosounder, Ashley Rose Norton Jan 2019

Acoustic Methods For Mapping And Characterizing Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Using A Multibeam Echosounder, Ashley Rose Norton

Doctoral Dissertations

Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is an important component of many temperate global coastal ecosystems. SAV monitoring programs using optical remote sensing are limited by water clarity and attenuation with depth. Here underwater acoustics is used to analyze the water volume above the bottom to detect, map and characterize SAV. In particular, this dissertation developed and applied new methods for analyzing the full time series of acoustic intensity data (e.g., water column data) collected by a multibeam echosounder. This dissertation is composed of three separate but related studies. In the first study, novel methods for detecting and measuring the canopy height …

The Interaction Between Prpf8 And Dzip1 And Its Role In Mitral Valve Prolapse, Janiece Sharmell Glover Jan 2019

The Interaction Between Prpf8 And Dzip1 And Its Role In Mitral Valve Prolapse, Janiece Sharmell Glover

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) is one of the most common cardiac diseases affecting 1 in 40 individuals worldwide. Functionally, MVP is the abnormal billowing of one or both of the mitral valve leaflets into the left atrium during ventricular systole. Structurally, the valves experience an accumulation of proteoglycans, an increase of collagen and hyperplasia. An echocardiogram can be used to diagnose the disease as well as determine the severity of it. MVP can cause several underlying effects such as regurgitation, arrhythmias and even sudden cardiac death in severe cases. Although there is very little known about the cause of the …

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Dependent Signaling In Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Benjamin Abner Harlan Jan 2019

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Dependent Signaling In Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Benjamin Abner Harlan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease is caused by the progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord, brain stem, and motor cortex. Motor neuron death leads to muscle weakness and paralysis causing death in one to five years from the time of symptoms onset. Most ALS cases are sporadic (sALS) and exposure to yet unidentified environmental factors might be responsible for sALS. About 5-10% of the cases are inherited (familial ALS, fALS) and the first ALS-linked gene identified was superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1). SOD1 mutations account for up to 20% of FALS and 1-2% of apparently …

Seismic Imaging Of Seafloor Deformation Induced By Impact From Large Submarine Landslide Blocks, Offshore Oregon, Brandi L. Lenz, Derek E. Sawyer, Benjamin Phrampus, Kathy Davenport, Ashley Long

Marine Science

A series of large blocks from the 44-North Slide, offshore Oregon, impacted the seafloor with sufficient force to induce a broad zone of deformation. In 2017, we acquired a seismic profile from the headwall area to the outer toe of this slide. Previous work identified this slide, but it has not been imaged at high resolution before this survey. A striking surficial feature is a collection of blocks that lie downslope from an amphitheater-shaped headwall. The blocks traveled up to 20-km horizontally and about 1200-m vertically down a 13◦ slope and now cover an area of ~100 km2 …

Groundwater Discharge To The Western Antarctic Coastal Ocean, Kimberly A. Null, D. Reide Corbett, Jared Crenshaw, Richard N. Peterson, Leigha E. Peterson, W. Berry Lyons Jan 2019

Groundwater Discharge To The Western Antarctic Coastal Ocean, Kimberly A. Null, D. Reide Corbett, Jared Crenshaw, Richard N. Peterson, Leigha E. Peterson, W. Berry Lyons

Marine Science

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) measurements have been limited along the Antarctic coast, although groundwater discharge is becoming recognized as an important process in the Antarctic. Quantifying this meltwater pathway is important for hydrologic budgets, ice mass balances and solute delivery to the coastal ocean. Here, we estimate the combined discharge of subglacial and submarine groundwater to the Antarctic coastal ocean. SGD, including subglacial and submarine groundwater, is quantified along the WAP at the Marr Glacier terminus using the activities of naturally occurring radium isotopes (223Ra, 224 Ra). Estimated SGD fluxes from a224Ra mass balance ranged from …

Conformational Studies Of Glucose Transporter 1 (Glut1) As An Anticancer Drug Target, Suliman Almahmoud, Xiaofang Wang, Jonathan L. Vennerstrom, Haizhen A. Zhong Jan 2019

Conformational Studies Of Glucose Transporter 1 (Glut1) As An Anticancer Drug Target, Suliman Almahmoud, Xiaofang Wang, Jonathan L. Vennerstrom, Haizhen A. Zhong

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) is a facilitative glucose transporter overexpressed in various types of tumors; thus, it has been considered as an important target for cancer therapy. GLUT1 works through conformational switching from an outward-open (OOP) to an inward-open (IOP) conformation passing through an occluded conformation. It is critical to determine which conformation is preferred by bound ligands because the success of structure-based drug design depends on the appropriate starting conformation of the target protein. To find out the most favorable GLUT 1 conformation for ligand binding, we ran systemic molecular docking studies for different conformations of GLUT1 using known …

Social Influence On Pick-Up Truck Purchase: A Case Study, Sydney Clark Jan 2019

Social Influence On Pick-Up Truck Purchase: A Case Study, Sydney Clark

Undergraduate Research Awards

Through this paper, we will ask ourselves whether irrational behaviors such as anchoring, symbolic utility, and self-concept help explain low-income households’ purchasing decisions concerning vehicle class or size. We will argue these behaviors do explain these purchasing decisions, and we will narrow this case study to pick-up truck ownership and purchases of the four lowest, median, and highest-income states in the United States from 1990-2015. We will use existing survey data to relate demographics to state data such as the nominal net farm income per capita and personality type, as a distinguishing proxy to capture purchasing traits. The period in …

Motus Animi In Mente Insana: An Emotion-Oriented Paradigm Of Legal Insanity Informed By The Neuroscience Of Moral Judgments And Decision-Making, Federica Coppola Jan 2019

Motus Animi In Mente Insana: An Emotion-Oriented Paradigm Of Legal Insanity Informed By The Neuroscience Of Moral Judgments And Decision-Making, Federica Coppola

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Legal insanity is deeply rooted in an intellectualistic conception of the capacity for moral rationality. The vast majority of insanity standards essentially consider the integrity of the defendant’s cognitive faculties at the time of the offense. However, the cognitivist model of legal insanity collides with the body of neuroscientific and behavioral literature about the critical role of emotions in moral judgments and decision-making processes. Drawing upon this scientific knowledge, this Article reforms the intellectualistic substance of the capacity for moral rationality that underlies the insanity doctrine by including emotions in its relevant psychological set. Hence, it provides a revised model …

Ziglar V. Abassi And Its Effect On The Constitutional Rights Of Federal Prisoners, Julio Pereyra Jan 2019

Ziglar V. Abassi And Its Effect On The Constitutional Rights Of Federal Prisoners, Julio Pereyra

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

In June 2017, the Supreme Court decided Ziglar v. Abbasi and held that prisoners unlawfully detained post-9/11 did not have a Bivens claim against policy-level federal executive branch officials and likely had no Bivens claim against the wardens at the facility where they were detained. In doing so, the Court drastically altered the analysis for deciding when a Bivens claim is new and for determining when a new Bivens claim should be either allowed by a court or precluded under a “special factors” analysis. This change in the Bivens framework severely restricts the availability of factually novel Bivens claims, even …

Exposure To 1,4-Dioxane Dysregulates Stool Metabolomic Network, Yensheng Wang Jan 2019

Exposure To 1,4-Dioxane Dysregulates Stool Metabolomic Network, Yensheng Wang

Public Health Theses

1,4-dioxane is an environmental toxin found in drinking water that is highly associated with liver cancer. The interactions between environmental toxins and the human body can result in the development of tumorigenesis, it can also result in changes to metabolism and thus metabolites that circulate within the body. Some of these metabolites can be procarcinogenic, or can reflect changes to host processes that control metabolism. Stool contains copious information on metabolism that can provide an overview of the well-being of our body, and metabolites in the stool can provide information regarding the pathogenesis of disease and the toxicokinetics of toxicants. …

Evaluation Of The Endocrine Disrupting Potential Of Chemicals Used In Crumb Rubber: A Multi-Factorial Approach, Alexia Sara Akbay Jan 2019

Evaluation Of The Endocrine Disrupting Potential Of Chemicals Used In Crumb Rubber: A Multi-Factorial Approach, Alexia Sara Akbay

Public Health Theses

Crumb rubber, an infill substance made from repurposed tires, has been examined for its carcinogenic potential but no studies have looked at its endocrine disrupting potential to date. After prioritizing 306 chemical components of crumb rubber using computational models, four endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) thought to possess estrogenic activity were chosen for further in vitro testing. In addition to these chemicals, a crumb rubber concentrated media (CRCM) was created for mixture analysis. Gene expression assays for estrogenic activity were conducted on Ishikawa, HepG2 and MCF-7 immortalized cell lines exposed to 4-tert-octylphenol, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, fluoranthene, chrysene and CRCM. Based on the findings …

Scaling Up Group Prenatal Care: Analysis Of The Current Situation And Recommendations For Future Research And Policy Actions, Allissa Anne Desloge

Public Health Theses

The United States consistently spends more on healthcare than other developed nations, but continues to suffer from inferior outcomes in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Innovation is needed within maternal and child healthcare to address these adverse outcomes. One identified innovative approach to tackle these issues is group prenatal care (GPNC). Women who participate in GPNC experience individual clinical care checks to monitor weight, blood pressure, and gestational age in addition to interactive learning and community-building activities and discussions. When compared to those who receive individual prenatal care, GPNC recipients have lower rates of preterm birth, fewer small for …

Iraqi Women As Legally Vulnerable Subjects: Applying Gender-Mainstreaming And Vulnerability Theory In The Post-Conflict Iraqi State, Jenna Breslin Jan 2019

Iraqi Women As Legally Vulnerable Subjects: Applying Gender-Mainstreaming And Vulnerability Theory In The Post-Conflict Iraqi State, Jenna Breslin

Emory International Law Review

Despite U.N.S.C.R 1325 being hailed as a momentous breakthrough for women in international law, such post-conflict reconstruction policies that rely on injecting women into the peacemaking process to achieve gendered equality prove ineffective and dangerous when applied to foreign nations torn apart by war. In the context of post-conflict Iraq, Resolution 1325 not only rendered Iraqi women more vulnerable as symbols of western invasion but failed to address the crumbling state infrastructure that left women without electricity, clean drinking water, employment, food, and security. This Comment argues that the ¿add women and stir¿ equality of Resolution 1325 must be abandoned …

The North Atlantic Alliance And Collective Defense At 70: Confession And Response Revisited, Michael N. Schmitt Jan 2019

The North Atlantic Alliance And Collective Defense At 70: Confession And Response Revisited, Michael N. Schmitt

Emory International Law Review

The North Atlantic Treaty was largely a response to global sentiment that other international organizations, namely the United Nations, were not accomplishing their intended purpose of the maintenance and promotion of peace and order in the world. This had a magnifying effect due to the global trauma and destruction that had been witnessed by the world following World War II. This Article visits the realities of history that led to the formation of NATO as a collective measure for self-defense and the effectiveness it had as a response to global concern of peace preservation. Importantly, this Article analyzes the substantive …

John Paul Ii's Theology Of The Body: The Human Person, Self-Gift, And The Sacramental Dimension Of Human Love, Mitchell Johansson

University Libraries Award for Undergraduate Research

This thesis is a philosophical defense of certain proposals John Paul II outlined and argued for in his work A Theology of the Body. The format of this thesis will be the following, arranged into four parts. In part one, I will give a very brief historical introduction to John Paul II and his work. Then I will sketch the philosophical matrix which the Theology of the Body enters, and introduce the synthetic methodology that John Paul II employs. The second part will elaborate and explain John Paul II’s metaphysics and phenomenology of the human person, the theological dimension of …

Seasonal Methane And Carbon Dioxide Emissions Along A Temperate Fluvial Wetland Dominated River Continuum, Paige Elizabeth Clarizia Jan 2019

Seasonal Methane And Carbon Dioxide Emissions Along A Temperate Fluvial Wetland Dominated River Continuum, Paige Elizabeth Clarizia

Master's Theses and Capstones

Freshwater ecosystems, such as streams and fluvial wetlands, are a subset of global aquatic ecosystems and produce and emit significant amounts of the greenhouse gases (GHG) methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In temperate regions, freshwater ecosystems often contain fluvial wetlands, which form the boundary between stream and wetland ecosystems. In fluvial wetlands, oxygen- and nutrient- poor soils are continuously fed by upstream river networks, which have the potential to create ecosystems with enhanced GHG production and emissions. The magnitude and seasonal variability of natural GHG emissions from freshwater fluvial wetlands, though highly understudied, have been suggested …

Agrobiodiversity For Pest Management: An Integrated Bioeconomic Simulation And Machine Learning Approach, Talha Siddique Jan 2019

Agrobiodiversity For Pest Management: An Integrated Bioeconomic Simulation And Machine Learning Approach, Talha Siddique

Master's Theses and Capstones

A pressing challenge of modern agriculture is to develop means of decreasing the negative impacts of pesticides while maintaining low pest pressure and high crop yield. Certain crop varieties, especially wild relatives of domesticated crops, provide pest regulation ecosystem services through chemical defense mechanisms. Benefits from these ecosystem service can be realized by intercropping cash crops with repellent wild varieties to reduce pest pressure. An opportunity cost exists, however, which consists of lower yield and market value. Such is the case of heirloom apple varieties that are more resistant to the codling moth but have a lower market value compared …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Molecular Xenomonitoring Using Mosquito And Tsetse Fly Excreta/Feces To Amplify Plasmodium, Brugia, And Trypanosoma Dna, Nils Pilotte, Darren A.N. Cook, Joseph Pryce, Michael F. Zulch, Corrado Minetti, Lisa J. Reimer, Steven A. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Results from an increasing number of studies suggest that mosquito excreta/feces (E/F) testing has considerable potential to serve as a supplement for traditional molecular xenomonitoring techniques. However, as the catalogue of possible use-cases for this methodology expands, and the list of amenable pathogens grows, a number of fundamental methods-based questions remain. Answering these questions is critical to maximizing the utility of this approach and to facilitating its successful implementation as an effective tool for molecular xenomonitoring. Methods: Utilizing E/F produced by mosquitoes or tsetse flies experimentally exposed to Brugia malayi, Plasmodium falciparum, or Trypanosoma brucei brucei, factors such as …

Loss Of A Foundation Species, Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga Canadensis), May Lead To Biotic Homogenization Of Fungal Communities And Altered Bacterial Abundance In The Forest Floor, Aliza Fassler, Jesse Bellemare, Danielle D. Ignace Jan 2019

Ignace

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock) is a key forest foundation species that is currently declining across the eastern US due to attack by exotic insect species, primarily Adelges tsugae (Hemlock Woolly Adelgid). In the northeastern US, declining Eastern Hemlock stands are typically replaced by fast-growing deciduous Betula lenta (Black Birch) trees, altering ecosystem processes and ecological communities. In this study, we used an approach that substituted space for time to explore how the forest floor's soil organic horizon, macrofungal communities, and bacterial abundance might be altered following Eastern Hemlock replacement by Black Birch. We compared intact, mature Eastern Hemlock forest plots …
