Insights Into Nucleic Acid-Platinum(Ii) Compound Interactions And Structural Impacts, Supuni Duneeshya Kamal Thalalla Gamage Jan 2019

Insights Into Nucleic Acid-Platinum(Ii) Compound Interactions And Structural Impacts, Supuni Duneeshya Kamal Thalalla Gamage

Wayne State University Dissertations

With the discovery of cisplatin in the 1960s, it has been widely studied as a precursor for anticancer drug development. Despite its effectiveness against certain cancers, clinical usage of cisplatin is restricted by a number of side effects and resistance. In the past decade, scientists have been exploring biologically important ligands such as sugar derivatives in the hope of overcoming such challenges. Attachment of a sugar moiety could facilitate lower accumulation of platinum drugs in the body as well as enhance cellular uptake. In this study, a carbohydrate-linked cisplatin analog, cis-dichlorido[(2-β-D-glucopyranosidyl)propane-1,3-diammine]platinum (5) has been studied. The aim was to evaluate …

Immune Modulation By Amphiphilic Oligonucleotides, Chunsong Yu Jan 2019

Immune Modulation By Amphiphilic Oligonucleotides, Chunsong Yu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Immunotherapy is emerging as one of the most promising therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment in clinical practice. Immunotherapy leverages the host’s immune system to attack and kill tumor cells. Rationally-designed cancer vaccines are emerging as one of the powerful immunotherapies primarily because of the promise of inducing tumor antigen-specific immune responses. To improve immunogenicity of cancer vaccines, vaccine antigens are administered with vaccine adjuvants which can robustly activate innate immune system and subsequently lead to adaptive immune response. However, the major challenge of achieving significant therapeutic efficacy is lack of efficient targeted-delivery of vaccine components. By taking advantage of endogenous …

Functional Characterization Of Accessory Proteins And Novel Activities In Direct And Indirect Trna Aminoacylation, Udumbara Menike Rathnayake Jan 2019

Functional Characterization Of Accessory Proteins And Novel Activities In Direct And Indirect Trna Aminoacylation, Udumbara Menike Rathnayake

Wayne State University Dissertations

Indirect tRNA aminoacylation is essential for most bacteria and archaea, particularly when these species do not have genes encoding asparaginyl- and/or glutaminyl-tRNA synthetase (AsnRS and GlnRS). In the absence of AsnRS, the first step in Asn-tRNAAsn synthesis involves misacylation of tRNAAsn with aspartate to produce Asp-tRNAAsn; this reaction is catalyzed by a non-discriminating aspartyl-tRNA synthetase (ND-AspRS). Subsequently, in bacteria, an amidotransferase called GatCAB converts Asp-tRNAAsn to Asn-tRNAAsn. An analogous, two-step processes exist to produce Gln-tRNAGln. In this case, a non-discriminating glutamyl-tRNA synthetase (ND-GluRS) misacylates tRNAGln to produce Glu-tRNAGln, which is then converted to Gln-tRNAGln by GatCAB. The central hub of …

Comparison Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms For Real Time Prediction Of Uav Behaviors, Brian Baity Jan 2019

Comparison Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms For Real Time Prediction Of Uav Behaviors, Brian Baity

Theses

An American scientific writer/critic of the mid-20th century, Joseph Wood Krutch, stated, “Technology made large populations possible: large populations now make technology indispensable.” Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a vital part of society, evolving from solely military use to commercial and even personal day-to-day use. UAV application has grown for mobility on demand, increasing the number of UAVs in the sky. Consequently, more UAVs increases the possibility of aerial collisions, challenging the safety of passengers flying and bystanders on the ground. Understanding the behavior of UAVs and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in general, therefore, will decrease the possibility of …

On The Relevance Of Cognitive Neuroscience For Community Of Inquiry, Mark Weinstein, Dan Fisherman Jan 2019

On The Relevance Of Cognitive Neuroscience For Community Of Inquiry, Mark Weinstein, Dan Fisherman

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Community of inquiry is most often seen as a dialogical procedure for the cooperative development of reasonable approaches to knowledge and meaning. This reflects a deep commitment to normatively based reasoning that is pervasive in a wide range of approaches to critical thinking and argument, where the underlying theory of reasoning is logic driven, whether formal or informal. The commitment to normative reasoning is deeply historical reflecting the fundamental distinction between reason and emotion. Despite the deep roots of the distinction and its canonization in current educational thought contemporary cognitive neuroscience presents a fundamental challenge to the viability of the …

Social Segmentation And K-Means Analysis At Jiangzhai: Quantitative Analysis And The Social Formation Of A Pre-Dynastic Yangshao Banpo Phase Community., Kirkland Judge Jones Jan 2019

Social Segmentation And K-Means Analysis At Jiangzhai: Quantitative Analysis And The Social Formation Of A Pre-Dynastic Yangshao Banpo Phase Community., Kirkland Judge Jones

Theses & ETDs

The village of Jiangzhai, located in the reaches of the Yellow River Valley is one of the most completely excavated examples of an early agricultural community during the Early Yangshao period (5000-4000 BCE). The village and the extensive data set collected during its excavation have been used in order to better our current understanding of the social milieu present in early agricultural communities and the development of hierarchical society, often focused on issues concerning the development of equality, and inequality. These models have largely been based on the presence in the archaeological record of a five part social segmentation in …

Linking Gut Permeability, Microbial Translocation And The Microbiome In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Pathogenesis, Elizabeth Ogunrinde Jan 2019

Linking Gut Permeability, Microbial Translocation And The Microbiome In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Pathogenesis, Elizabeth Ogunrinde

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Objective – Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by loss of tolerance to self-antigens and production of autoantibodies. Growing evidence suggests that autoimmune diseases may arise or worsen due to increased intestinal permeability allowing passage of antigens into the systemic circulation. Translocation of microbes or microbial components into the systemic circulation can result in consequences including alteration of microbiota composition and immune system activation. In SLE disease, the extent of intestinal permeability and microbial translocation and their effect on SLE disease pathogenesis is yet to be defined. We hypothesized that increased gut permeability resulting in …

Prescription Trends In Branded Versus Generic Glatiramer Acetate Utilization Among Insurers For The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis In The United States, Stephen G. Smith Jan 2019

Prescription Trends In Branded Versus Generic Glatiramer Acetate Utilization Among Insurers For The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis In The United States, Stephen G. Smith

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic condition managed by disease modifying pharmaceutical therapies (DMTs). Health care cost is increasing due to high prescription drug spending. The high cost of branded DMTs highlights the potential value of lower cost generic therapies. Using generic DMTs could reduce the spending in the prescription drug sector. Recently, generic glatiramer acetate (GA) that treats relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis has become available. Appropriate insurer policies and practices are imperative to promote the use and utilization of generics like GA. Notably, no study has specifically evaluated the differences in utilization uptake of branded vs generic GA …

The Effects Of Chronic Age Consumption On Prostate Carcinogenesis, Pamela Woods Jan 2019

The Effects Of Chronic Age Consumption On Prostate Carcinogenesis, Pamela Woods

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among men in America. Interestingly, it has been shown that immigration and the adaption of a Western-Diet can significantly increase the risk of prostate cancer development in men, suggesting diet may play a key role in prostate cancer development. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are reactive metabolites that are produced during normal metabolism and accumulate in our tissues and organs as we get older. AGE content in the Western-Diet has significantly increased over the years leading to an increase of AGE …

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

In this paper, we used tongue coating to obtain metabolites in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic renal failure (CRF). The metabolites were analyzed to discover the substance that serves as the underlying basis of the damp phlegm pattern. This analysis is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory of “different diseases have the same pattern.” The metabolic spectrum was obtained through the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry coupling techniques and analyzed by searching the METLIN and HMDB databases. Some metabolites related to amino acids and glucose metabolism were identified in the tongue-coating samples from damp phlegm pattern …

Louisville Jewish Hospital’S “Tikkun Olam”: A Case Example Of Continuity For American Jewish Hospitals, Hannah Thompson Jan 2019

Louisville Jewish Hospital’S “Tikkun Olam”: A Case Example Of Continuity For American Jewish Hospitals, Hannah Thompson

Libraries Award for Undergraduate Scholarship

According to Mary Wagner, the author of Jewish Hospitals Yesterday and Today, Jewish Hospitals emerged in the mid-19th century in the U.S. for several reasons: the Jewish American community’s need to combat anti-Semitism, to provide services for its large and then-growing immigrant population, and to establish a place for Jewish medical professionals to work, since anti-Semitism prevented them from being employed elsewhere. Although, American Jews became increasingly more accepted as part of the broader American social and political milieu throughout the early 20th century, Jewish Hospitals persisted in cities across the U.S. until the 1970s. To date roughly 22 …
