Development Of Laser Ablation Direct Analysis In Real Time Imaging-Mass Spectrometry (Ladi-Ms)-Applications To Questions Of Relevance To Forensic Science And Plant Biochemistry, Kristen Leigh Fowble Jan 2019

Development Of Laser Ablation Direct Analysis In Real Time Imaging-Mass Spectrometry (Ladi-Ms)-Applications To Questions Of Relevance To Forensic Science And Plant Biochemistry, Kristen Leigh Fowble

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Methods for the accomplishment of small molecule imaging by mass spectrometry are challenged by the need for sample pre-treatment steps such as cryo-sectioning, dehydration, chemical fixation, or application of a matrix or solvent, that must be performed to obtain interpretable spatial distribution data. Furthermore, these steps along with requirements of the mass analyzer such as high vacuum, can severely limit the range of sample types that can be analyzed by this powerful method. Here, we report the development of a laser ablation-direct analysis in real time imaging-mass spectrometry (LADI-MS) approach which couples a 213 nm Nd:YAG solid state UV laser …

The Role Of Rock Signaling On Salivary Gland Organoid Formation, Matthew Koslow Jan 2019

The Role Of Rock Signaling On Salivary Gland Organoid Formation, Matthew Koslow

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Salivary glands are crucial organs that are responsible for secreting saliva which is important for the breakdown of carbohydrates, providing lubrication of the mouth, and maintenance of oral health. Patients diagnosed with Sjögren's Syndrome or receiving treatment for head and neck cancer, can permanently lose salivary gland function, which is referred to as salivary hypofunction. As a result, these patients develop Xerostomia, or the feeling of dry mouth, and suffer from an overall decreased quality of life. To combat the negative effects of salivary hypofunction, stem cell therapy is an attractive option, as implantation of specific cell populations can rescue …

Novel Mass Spectrometric Approaches For Deciphering The Epitranscriptomic Code, William D. Mcintyre Jan 2019

Novel Mass Spectrometric Approaches For Deciphering The Epitranscriptomic Code, William D. Mcintyre

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

According to the results of the Human Genome Project, less than 5% of our genome consists of sequences that code for actual proteins. At the same time, however, ~90% of these non-coding sequences are transcribed into a myriad of classes of ribonucleic acids collectively known as ncRNAs, which have been recognized as essential regulatory factors. It has been recently shown that the activity of ncRNAs can be in turn modulated by post-transcriptional modifications (PTMs), covalent marks that can be established/removed by tightly regulated enzymatic pathways. Now, the race is on to understand the new set of controls of cellular functions …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of the impact of e-petitioning as a collective mobilized action taken to express policy preferences and the way that signing behavior takes place. Previous studies have analyzed e-petition signature data to track and understand the relationship between signing activity, time, and success of a petition (Hale et al., 2013; Yasseri et al., 2014). By using data mining techniques, namely market basket analysis and social network analysis, this research will explore three case studies that consist of three sets of similar petitions that were initiated on the US e-petitioning platform, …

Examining The Influence Of Technology Affordances Of Fitness Trackers And Health Psychographic Factors On Physical Activity, Xin Zhou Jan 2019

Examining The Influence Of Technology Affordances Of Fitness Trackers And Health Psychographic Factors On Physical Activity, Xin Zhou

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Fitness trackers have immense potential to improve individuals’ health behaviors and health outcomes. Studies in disciplines such as public health, communication technology and information systems, have examined factors that can predict use of fitness trackers and their influence on health-related behaviors. However, not much is known about (1) which element(s) of fitness trackers affect individuals’ health behaviors, and (2) the psychological mechanism that guides the relationships between individuals’ health-related beliefs and use of fitness trackers on physical activity behaviors. Guided by the Motivational Technology Model (MTM) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this dissertation examined the influence of technology affordances (i.e., customization, …

Significance Of Rna 2'-5' Linkage And Metal-Ion Mediated Base Pairs, Fusheng Shen Jan 2019

Significance Of Rna 2'-5' Linkage And Metal-Ion Mediated Base Pairs, Fusheng Shen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

It has been known that the template-directed RNA chemical replication reaction produces mixture of backbones containing both 3’-5’ and 2’-5’ linkages. This backbone heterogeneity has been a significant problem in studying the emergence of RNA World from the prebiotic chemistry. However, very recently, it is reported that FMN binding aptamer and a hammerhead ribozyme are still able to retain considerable functions in the presence of certain 2’-5’ linkages, indicating that RNA backbones may be quite flexible and this backbone heterogeneity problem may not be as severe as originally thought. This finding also brings two related important questions: First, how does …

Modeling Chaperone-Substrate Interactions Of Alpha Crystallin From The Ocular Lens, Lisa Marie S. Ramirez Jan 2019

Modeling Chaperone-Substrate Interactions Of Alpha Crystallin From The Ocular Lens, Lisa Marie S. Ramirez

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The α-crystallins (αA- and αB-crystallin isoforms) from the ocular lens are small heat shock proteins and molecular chaperones, widely believed to play a significant role in protecting the lens from cataract. Mutations and modifications on human αA- and αB-crystallin (HAA and HAB, respectively) are linked to a variety of diseases, including cataract formation, neuropathological protein folding disorders, and many others. It is believed that HAA and HAB prevent the aggregation of other lens proteins. However, the structural and thermodynamic details of the chaperone-substrate (aka “client”) interaction are sparse. Therefore, the main objective of this dissertation is to reveal structural and …

Empirical Essays On Science And New Technology Adoption, Huifeng Yu Jan 2019

Empirical Essays On Science And New Technology Adoption, Huifeng Yu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The first chapter studies how the quantity and quality of research output varies over the career using 5.6 million biomedical science articles published over three decades. We show that controlling for selective attrition reconciles conflicts in a longstanding, interdisciplinary literature. While research quality declines monotonically over the career, this decline is easily overlooked because the highest “ability” authors have the longest publishing careers. Our results have implications for broader questions of human capital accumulation over the career and also for federal research policies that shift funding from late- to early-career researchers – while providing more funding to researchers when they …

The State Of Substance Use Education In Master Of Social Work Programs : A Content Analysis Of Msw Curricula & Survey Of Msw Program Leaders, Dane Minnick Jan 2019

The State Of Substance Use Education In Master Of Social Work Programs : A Content Analysis Of Msw Curricula & Survey Of Msw Program Leaders, Dane Minnick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Substance use is currently a pervasive problem among a large proportion of populations served by the social work profession. Several studies have indicated that social workers routinely provide services to clients with direct and indirect substance use needs, making knowledge of substance use interventions and public policies a necessity for most social workers to operate effectively in the field. However, despite the regularity of interaction with substance using clients, a large body of research has suggested that social work students are ill-prepared to deliver substance use services upon completing their academic training, and that a significant deficit of substance use …

"Farre Fetched And Deare Bought" : Cosmetics And Englishness 1570-1625, Marta Josie Schoel Jan 2019

"Farre Fetched And Deare Bought" : Cosmetics And Englishness 1570-1625, Marta Josie Schoel

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study examines cosmetic practice, discourse, and material to explore the ways in which face paint, often made from a mixture of foreign and domestic ingredients, challenges the emergent notion of a pure English identity. Within a broader discourse found in recipe books, anti-cosmetic treatises, public and private documents, and plays for public spectacle—as well as court masques—I examine how early modern performances use cosmetic mixtures as theatrical devices to stage, represent, and negotiate anxieties about England’s increased engagement with the nascent global economy. Worn on the permeable surface of the skin, cosmetic material, such as alum, mercury, and mummia, …

Harm Reduction Policy : Biopower, Race & Stigma At The Heart Of The 'Opioid Crisis', Cole Charles Melby Jan 2019

Harm Reduction Policy : Biopower, Race & Stigma At The Heart Of The 'Opioid Crisis', Cole Charles Melby

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Across the U.S., concerns regarding substance abuse, addiction, and treatment are coming to the forefront of public discourse, due to increased media coverage of the popularly dubbed ‘opioid crisis.’ As overdose rates increase, particularly in rural and suburban white communities, so have debates about the ethics and efficacy of harm reduction services. Through a review of existing literature and reflections on interviews from key informants at New York State Department of Health, grassroots harm reduction organizations, and a ‘mainstream’ addiction clinic, this thesis will critically examine the history of drug user stigmatization in the U.S. and how it has influenced …

Getting Serious With Comedy : Power, Stand-Up Comedy, And American Public Life, Andrew Michael Cutrone Jan 2019

Getting Serious With Comedy : Power, Stand-Up Comedy, And American Public Life, Andrew Michael Cutrone

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This master’s thesis theorizes the political and cultural significance of stand-up comedy as an institution in the contemporary US public sphere, against the dominant perception that it is an enterprise severed from social consequence. Via a critical application of Ferguson’s theorization of power in The Reorder of Things (2012), in addition to a reading of stand-up comedy routines and related public discourse that utilizes feminist and queer of color theory, I show how subjective terrains of race, gender, and sexuality produce the discursive and political materials which organize stand-up discourse and performance in moments of “racial comedy,” “gender comedy,” and …

Family Instability As A Turning Point In The Life-Course : An Examination Of Whether And How Family Instability And Specific Types Of Family Instability Directly And Indirectly Influence Delinquency, Walter Shelley Jan 2019

Family Instability As A Turning Point In The Life-Course : An Examination Of Whether And How Family Instability And Specific Types Of Family Instability Directly And Indirectly Influence Delinquency, Walter Shelley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

“A family’s resources and the doors they open cast a long shadow over children’s life trajectories…This view is at odds with the popular ethos that we are makers of our own fortune.” (Alexander, Entwisle, & Olson, 2010, pg. 1). Perhaps no aspect about an individual’s life is not shaped in some way by their family. In fact, it could be surmised that families set the stage for all later outcomes in the life-course. An event in a family such as family instability could play an important role in shaping an individual’s behavior and outcomes in their life course. However, heterogeneity …

The Aids Volcano : Narratives Of Hiv/Aids In The Iranian Public Sphere, Elham Pourtaher Jan 2019

The Aids Volcano : Narratives Of Hiv/Aids In The Iranian Public Sphere, Elham Pourtaher

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Broadly construed, this thesis will examine the transformations in the socio-cultural construction of HIV/AIDS in Iran from the joint perspectives of media and medical sociology. Until recently, official public narratives in Iran primarily regarded AIDS to be a drug-related disease. However, beginning from the early 2010s, a new narrative frame (often called as “the third wave”) introduces a significant “alarming” collective shift in the transmissions modes of the disease toward sexual pathways. Having observed the rather rapid transformation of the public AIDS framing, this research began with an empirical question: considering the fact that the shift implied the prevalence of …

Butterflies As Charismatic Indicators : Can Study Of Impact Of On-Farm Habitat Enrichment On Butterfly Populations Provide Insight About Habitat Quality For Other Insects?, Erin Allen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Populations of insect pollinators have been declining precipitously across the Northern Hemisphere, due to disease, insecticide application, and habitat degradation and loss. As a result, crop pollination services are at risk, and the ecological insurance provided by biodiversity is in jeopardy. Regional efforts to combat the decline of pollinator diversity and abundance include the New York State Pollinator Protection Plan to assess regional pollinator health, strategies to enhance wild pollinator habitat, as well as on-farm habitat enhancement strategies to augment pollinator populations in and around crops. One such habitat enhancement strategy involves improving native floral resource availability, which is often …

Queering Sexual Development Frameworks : A Dynamic Systems Approach To Conceptualizing Other-Sex Sexuality Among Lesbians, Kolbe Franklin Jan 2019

Queering Sexual Development Frameworks : A Dynamic Systems Approach To Conceptualizing Other-Sex Sexuality Among Lesbians, Kolbe Franklin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Essentialist models of sexual identity development have dominated social discourse and public opinion since the 1980s. This perspective posits that sexual orientation is an intrinsic, core identity that has roots in specific biological factors. Based on this perspective it is assumed that a person’s sexuality will manifest in a linear fashion throughout the life course. Notably, this model positions individuals with same-sex sexual attractions and behaviors as specific “types” of people. While this perspective has become largely institutionalized in public opinion, within academic research on sexual orientation, there has been little consensus on the veracity of this model. Specifically, the …

Artificial Intelligence And Utility : Deep Problems For A.I. Ethics, Trevor Howard Groves

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

As technology advances further, new problems arise for us to contend with philosophically. Indeed, popular media has already begun presenting the possible issues our society must deal with. One of these is A.I., and how they will challenge old notions of subjects like identity, consciousness, and ethics. It is this third category that this paper is concerned with, namely how the existence of A.I. will affect our choice of ethical theory in regards to their treatment. It is my intention to demonstrate that one particular category of ethical theory, hedonistic consequentialist ones, will be ill equipped to handle these considerations. …

Of Donuts And Promo : In Silico Approaches To Identification Of Transcriptional Regulators Of Salivary Acinar Differentiation, Connor Cillian Duffy

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The salivary gland is an organ often taken for granted by most people. However, its proper function is essential for several everyday activities, such as speaking, swallowing, and tasting. As such, impaired salivary gland function, such as that caused by Sjögren’s Syndrome or radiotherapy for head and neck cancers, can lead to a significantly reduced quality of life. The cells that produce saliva in salivary glands are known as acinar cells, which arise from proacinar cells generated during embryonic development. As such, in studying the promoter regions of proacinar and acinar genes, it may be possible to identify common transcription …

Assessing Novel Expectancies About Ayahuasca : A Preliminary Report, Brianna Rose Altman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Given the growing popularity of Ayahuasca, we sought to identify why people might use this psychoactive brew rather than classic hallucinogens like LSD or psilocybin. Experienced users (N=139) completed an online survey about their use of hallucinogens, including ayahuasca, how their ayahuasca experiences differed from those with other hallucinogens, and their willingness to use ayahuasca over other hallucinogens in the future. Participants reported meaningful differences between ayahuasca and other hallucinogens, which apparently related to positive connections to nature and other people, dramatic or terrifying negative thoughts, and aversive physical reactions. Multiple measures of self-reported likelihood of using ayahuasca again increased …
