Tryptophan (Trp) catabolizing enzymes play an important and complex role in the development of cancer. Significant evidence implicates them in a range of inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities. Whereas inhibitors of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-1 (IDO1) have been reported and analyzed in the clinic, fewer inhibitors have been described for tryptophan dioxygenase (TDO) and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-2 (IDO2) which also have been implicated more recently in cancer, inflammation and immune control. Consequently the development of dual or pan inhibitors of these Trp catabolizing enzymes may represent a therapeutically important area of research. This is the first report to describe the development of dual and …
Prenatal Stress And Birth Weight: Evidence From The Egyptian Revolution, Ronia A. Hawash
Prenatal Stress And Birth Weight: Evidence From The Egyptian Revolution, Ronia A. Hawash
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
The Egyptian Revolution that ignited in January 2011 resulted in intense violent conflict between protestors and former regime allies. This generated a significant amount of fear and stress among people who lived in proximity to such events. We use this exogenous shock as a natural experiment to test the causal relationship between prenatal stress and birth weight. Governorate-level fatalities resulting from this conflict will be used as an exogenous indicator for prenatal stress. Using fixed effects and difference-in-difference analysis, results show that higher prenatal stress resulting from political conflict during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy has a …

Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers In Diamond For Nanoscale Magnetic Resonance Imaging Applications, Alberto Boretti, Lorenzo Rosa, Jonathan Blackledge, Stefania Castelletto
Articles
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is a point defect in diamond with unique properties for use in ultra-sensitive, high-resolution magnetometry. One of the most interesting and challenging applications is nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging (nano-MRI). While many review papers have covered other NV centers in diamond applications, there is no survey targeting the specific development of nano-MRI devices based on NV centers in diamond. Several different nano-MRI methods based on NV centers have been proposed with the goal of improving the spatial and temporal resolution, but without any coordinated effort. After summarizing the main NV magnetic imaging methods, this review presents a …

Microplastics (or MPs; < 5 mm in size) pollution is largely unstudied in the Philippines. From an environmental sustainability standpoint, it is important to understand the characteristics, abundance, and environmental fate of plastic debris of various sizes, and these include microplastics that are not more easily and readily detected. In this study, we assessed the extent of microplastics contamination in the sediments, waters, oysters, and selected fishes found in the rivers and coastal areas of Ticalan, Batangas, which were identified from water quality parameters as Class C and CS, respectively. The microplastics were extracted from these samples by chemical digestion of the matrix, series of filtration, and separation by flotation through a density gradient to finally isolate the microplastics which were not dissolved by chemical digestion. The isolated samples were imaged by optical microscopy and characterized based on their descriptive attributes. The results showed the presence of microplastics in all the samples tested, which were found mostly in the form of filaments, fragments, films, and pellets – with most showing weathered, degraded, or angular and irregular surfaces. Identification was done through spectral matching of the Fourier transform infrared spectra of isolated fragments with that of known plastics, although identification in some cases is made uncertain by possibility of degradation of the plastics in the environment. The majority of the isolates showed signature absorption bands of the C-H stretching vibrations of polyethylene-based plastics.

Preservation Protocols For Maintaining Species Stability Of Arsenic, Chromium, And Selenium In Water Samples, Contessa Lowery
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Water quality has become an increasing concern in recent years. The environmental challenges surrounding water quality include the presence of dissolved metals and their potential impact on human health and the environment. The challenge is exacerbated because many important metals have multiple oxidation states, which affect the health and environmental behavior of the metal. Many metals are known carcinogens and increased anthropogenic effects have inexorably made metals’ accumulation an imposing threat. Analytical instrumentation has advanced in many areas, making it now possible to measure very low concentrations of multiple elements in water. Current interest is determining the chemical speciation of …

Extreme weather events (EWEs) are increasing in frequency, posing a greater risk of adverse human health effects. As such, developing sociological and psychological based interventions is paramount to empowering individuals and communities to actively protect their own health. Accordingly, this study compared the efficacy of two established social-cognitive models, namely the Health Beliefs Model (HBM) and Risks-Attitudes-Norms-Abilities-Self-regulation (RANAS) framework, in predicting health behaviours following EWEs. Surface water flooding was used as the exemplar EWE in the current study, due to the increasing incidence of these events in the Republic of Ireland over the past decade. Levels of prior experience with …

Community Detection In Complex Networks Using A New Agglomerative Approach, Majid Arasteh, Somayeh Alizadeh
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Complex networks are used for the representation of complex systems such as social networks. Graph analysis comprises various tools such as community detection algorithms to uncover hidden data. Community detection aims to detect similar subgroups of networks that have tight interconnections with each other while, there is a sparse connection among different subgroups. In this paper, a greedy and agglomerative approach is proposed to detect communities. The proposed method is fast and often detects high-quality communities. The suggested method has several steps. In the first step, each node is assigned to a separated community. In the second step, a vertex …

Speech Emotion Recognition Using Semi-Nmf Feature Optimization, Surekha Reddy Bandela, T Kishore Kumar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In recent times, much research is progressing forward in the field of speech emotion recognition (SER). Many SER systems have been developed by combining different speech features to improve their performances. As a result, the complexity of the classifier increases to train this huge feature set. Additionally, some of the features could be irrelevant in emotion detection and this leads to a decrease in the emotion recognition accuracy. To overcome this drawback, feature optimization can be performed on the feature sets to obtain the most desirable emotional feature set before classifying the features. In this paper, semi-nonnegative matrix factorization (semi-NMF) …

Confocal near-infrared Raman spectroscopy has been shown to have applications in the area of clinical biology. A source wavelength in the near infrared is preferred over visible wavelengths for inspecting biological samples due to superior wavenumber resolution and reduced photodamage. However, these excitation sources have a number of drawbacks when compared to lasers in the visible wavelength region, including the requirement to use expensive highly pure crystal substrates such as Raman grade calcium fluoride as well as long acquisition times due to the lower Raman scattering efficiency. This paper investigates the use of a reflective substrate comprising a low cost …

Patient samples are unique and often irreplaceable. This allows biobanks to be a valuable source of material. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of Raman spectroscopy to screen for histologically confirmed cases of Cervical Intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) using biobanked liquid based cytology (LBC) samples. Two temperatures for long term storage were assessed; 80°C and -25°C. The utility of Raman spectroscopy for the detection of CIN was compared for fresh LBC samples and biobanked LBC samples. Two groups of samples were used for the study with one group associated with disease (CIN 3) and the other associated …

How Faculty Advisers And Counselors View Their Role In The Swe Organization, Diane Peters, Alexa Rihana Abdallah
Mechanical Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials
Faculty advisors and counselors play an important role in establishing and sustaining a successful Society of Women Engineers (SWE) student section. Currently, most SWE collegiate sections have both faculty advisors and counselors. A faculty advisor, who is required for student organizations in most universities, serves as the liaison between the SWE section and the university and is responsible for knowing the university’s policies. A faculty advisor helps the student section access university resources and ensures the section is meeting all university requirements. A counselor is required by SWE for a collegiate section to remain in “good standing” and serves as …

Patents For Sharing, Toshiko Takenaka
Patents For Sharing, Toshiko Takenaka
Michigan Technology Law Review
Spurred by the Internet, emerging technologies have changed the way commercial firms innovate and have made it possible for individuals to play an important role in that innovation. Producers in the Information Communication Technologies (ICT), and other sectors dealing with complex technologies with many separately patentable components, find it increasingly difficult to make products without infringing on patents held by others. Numerous overlapping patents often cover such products. Producers have developed a new way to use patents: as inclusive rights for sharing their technologies with others through cross-licensing and other private ordering arrangements in order to ensure the freedom to …
Some Transitivity-Like Concepts In Abelian Groups, Gabor Braun, Brendan Goldsmith, Ketao Gong, Lutz Strungmann
Some Transitivity-Like Concepts In Abelian Groups, Gabor Braun, Brendan Goldsmith, Ketao Gong, Lutz Strungmann
Articles
The classical notions of transitivity and full transitivity in Abelian p-groups have natural extensions to concepts called Krylov and weak transitivity. The interconnections between these four types of transitivity are determined for Abelian p-groups; there is a marked difference in the relationships when the prime p is equal to 2. In the final section the relationship between full and Krylov transitivity is examined in the case of mixed Abelian groups which are p-local in the sense that multiplication by an integer relatively prime to p is an automorphism.

Light is necessary for vision; it enables us to sense and perceive our surroundings and in many direct and indirect ways, via eye and skin, affects our physiological and psychological health. The use of light in built environments has comfort, behavioural, economic and environmental consequences. Daylight has many particular benefits including excellent visual performance, permitting good eyesight, effective entrainment of the circadian system as well as a number of acute non-image forming effects and the important role of vitamin D production. Some human responses to daylight seem to be well defined whilst others require more research to be adequately understood. …
Between The Margins And The Mainstream: The Case Of Women's Rights, Hilary Charlesworth, Christine M. Chinkin
Between The Margins And The Mainstream: The Case Of Women's Rights, Hilary Charlesworth, Christine M. Chinkin
Book Chapters
This chapter investigates the conceptual limits of the field of women’s rights. It identifies two main currents of activity in the field: the elaboration of human rights standards, particularly through the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women of 1979; and the development of the ‘Women, Peace and Security’ agenda by the UN Security Council since 2000. Both areas are limited in their understandings of the diverse lives of women. The chapter argues that campaigns for the recognition of women’s rights shuttle between the mainstream and the margins of international law and that the structural …

Health Care Ai: Law, Regulation, And Policy., W. Nicholson Price Ii
Book Chapters
As discussed in previous chapters, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to be involved in almost all aspects of the health care industry. The legal landscape for health care AI is complex; AI systems with different intended uses, audiences, and use environments face different requirements at state, federal, and international levels. A full accounting of these legal requirements, or of the policy questions involved, is far beyond the scope of this chapter. Additionally, the legal and regulatory framework for AI in health care continues to evolve, given the nascent stage of the industry.
In this chapter, we offer an overview …

Molecular-logic based computation (MLBC) has grown by accumulating many examples of combinational logic gates and a few sequential variants. In spite of many inspirations being available in biology, there are virtually no examples of MLBC in chemistry where sequential and combinational operations are integrated. Here we report a simple alcohol-ketone redox interconversion which switches a macrocycle between a large or small cavity, with erect aromatic walls which create a deep hydrophobic space or with collapsed walls respectively. Small aromatic guests can be captured or released in an all or none manner upon chemical command. During capture, the fluorescence of the …

Point-of-care diagnostics will rely upon the development of low-cost, noncomplex, and easily integrated systems in order to examine biological samples such as blood and urine obtained from the patient. The development of metal ion sensors is a subject of significant relevance for physiological samples. The level of different blood electrolytes, mainly H+, Na+, K+ and Cl− is considerably used to monitor irregular physiologies. The particular challenge in biosensing, and in fact for any other sensor, is signal differentiation between non-specifically bound material and the specific detecting of the target molecule/ion. The biosensors described in this paper are fabricated by a …

Isoxazolo‐pyrene tethered calix[4]arenes selectively detect copper(II) ions without interference from related perchlorate ions. The fluorescence emission of the probes, synthesised by nitrile oxide alkyne cycloaddition, and characterised by spectroscopic and crystallographic data, is rapidly reduced by Cu(II) ions. Detection limits are in the micromolar or sub‐micromolar range (0.3–3.6 μM) based on a 1 : 1 sensor:analyte interaction. Voltammetric behaviour and 1H NMR data provide new insights into the sensing mechanism which is dependent on the calixarene substitution pattern. When the calixarene lower rim is fully substituted, Cu(II) detection occurs through a traditional chelation mechanism. In contrast, for calixarenes 1,3‐disubstituted on …

Determination Of Distance Between Dc Traction Power Centers In A 1500-V Dc Subway Line With Artificial Intelligence Methods, Mehmet Taci̇ddi̇n Akçay, İlhan Kocaarslan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The electrification system in rail systems is designed with regard to the operating data and design parameters. While the electrification system is formed, the minimum voltage rating that the traction force requires during the operation needs to be provided. The highest value of the voltage drop occurring on the line is determined by the distance between power centers. This value needs to be kept within certain limits for the continuity of operation. In this study, the determination of the distance between DC traction power centers for a 1500-V DC-fed rail system is done by means of the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference …

Fitting A Recurrent Dynamical Neural Network To Neural Spiking Data: Tackling The Sigmoidal Gain Function Issues, Reşat Özgür Doruk
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This is a continuation of a recent study (Doruk RO, Zhang K. Fitting of dynamic recurrent neural network models to sensory stimulus-response data. J Biol Phys 2018; 44: 449-469), where a continuous time dynamical recurrent neural network is fitted to neural spiking data. In this research, we address the issues arising from the inclusion of sigmoidal gain function parameters to the estimation algorithm. The neural spiking data will be obtained from the same model as that of Doruk and Zhang, but we propose a different model for identification. This will also be a continuous time recurrent neural network, but with …

Robust Compressed Domain Watermarking Algorithm For Video Protection And Authentication In Noisy Channels, Naveen Cheggoju, Vishal Satpute
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper introduces a robust and noise-resilient compressed domain video watermarking technique for data authentication and copyright protection. In recent years, watermarking has emerged as an essential technique to be equipped with data transmission. The main challenge pertaining to transmission is to protect the watermark from noise introduced by the channel. Here, we address this issue by watermark replication and by using the independent pass coding (INPAC) algorithm for compression. A replicated watermark is embedded into the video by the proposed blind video watermarking algorithm and then the watermarked video is compressed by the INPAC algorithm. The compressed video is …

Market-Base Solutions To Manage The Guarani Aquifer: Pigouvian Fee And Cap-And-Trade, Julia Hayes Vieira
Master's Theses and Capstones
The objective of this case-study is to analyze the effects and the perception of different groups in possibly implementing market-based approaches of Pigouvian tax and Cap-and-Trade to manage the Guarani Aquifer, Brazil. The Pigouvian Tax is a corrective taxation that assigns a price for the negative impacts water consumption creates to aquifers, as a way to influence a more sustainable level of water consumption. Cap-and-Trade sets a maximum quantity of water allowed to be used from aquifers, and allow economic agents to trade quantities of water they have the right to use, as a way to adapt to the cap. …

Distribution, Hybridization, And Taxonomic Status Of Two-Lined Salamanders (Eurycea Bislineata Complex) In Virginia And West Virginia, Paul W. Sattler, Timothy R. Brophy
Faculty Publications and Presentations
We used three diagnostic protein markers to examine salamanders of the Eurycea bislineata complex at 80 localities in Virginia and West Virginia. Two groups were strongly differentiated and met at a narrow contact zone. Rare hybridization was observed as well as limited introgression up to 5 km north and 10 km south of the contact zone. At the contact zone, 1% F1, 2% F2, 32% backcross, and 66% parental genotypes were observed. This pattern of parapatric distribution with limited hybridization and introgression argues for the recognition of Eurycea bislineata and E. cirrigera as separate species.
