Understanding Diabetes Through Pathway Analysis Evaluation, London Cavaletto Jan 2019

Understanding Diabetes Through Pathway Analysis Evaluation, London Cavaletto

Research Opportunities for Engineering Undergraduates (ROEU) Program 2018-19

Metabolic disorders affect many people and identifying significantly perturbed biological processes in a metabolic disease can provide valuable insight into the disease’s mechanisms. Evaluating the proposed Metabolic Pathway Analysis Method (RAMP) will enable us to reliably use it to identify significantly perturbed metabolic pathways that could help identify disease mechanisms and potential therapy targets or disease bio-markers of a metabolic disorder.

The Litigation Rollercoaster Of Bipa: A Comment On The Protection Of Individuals From Violations Of Biometric Information Privacy, Anna L. Metzger Jan 2019

The Litigation Rollercoaster Of Bipa: A Comment On The Protection Of Individuals From Violations Of Biometric Information Privacy, Anna L. Metzger

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

As technology progresses, businesses are enacting new programs that utilize emerging technology. Biometric data is an example of a tech capability that is becoming more popular for businesses. Companies can use an individual’s unique body data to monitor their employees, collect data, and enhance security and convenience for their customers. While this technology is impressive, it comes with privacy and security concerns. In 2008, Illinois enacted the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) to address these concerns. BIPA aims to protect individuals by setting strict guidelines for data collection by private entities. Individuals can file suit for violations of this statute, …

Lessons From The Lead-K Campaign For Language Equality For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Christina Payne-Tsoupros Jan 2019

Lessons From The Lead-K Campaign For Language Equality For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Christina Payne-Tsoupros

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

This Article asserts that early intervention under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEIA) should be amended to recognize the needs of the young child with the disability as primary over the needs of the child’s family. This Article contends that certain requirements of the IDEIA cause early intervention professionals to view and treat the child’s family, rather than the child herself, as the ultimate recipient of support. In many situations, the needs of the family and the needs of the child may wholly align, but that is an assumption that bears questioning. This Article analyzes groundbreaking …

Controlling Lonicera Maackii (Amur Honeysuckle): Basal Bark And Prescribed Fire Efficacy And Impacts, Kaleb Baker Jan 2019

Controlling Lonicera Maackii (Amur Honeysuckle): Basal Bark And Prescribed Fire Efficacy And Impacts, Kaleb Baker

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Lonicera maackii is a non-native shrub that has invaded eastern and midwestern North American deciduous forests, altering the ecosystem functions and reducing biodiversity. Managers tasked with controlling L. maackii, being resource limited, require effective methods that are quick and easy to use without inflicting extensive nontarget damage. This study explores prescribed fire and seasonal basal applications of triclopyr as control methods and examines their extent of off-target damage. Paired-split plots were established to implement seasonal basal bark treatments within burned/unburned units where individual L. maackii were tracked to determine mortality and the hyperlocal impacts of management. Basal bark treatments were …

History In American New Wave And Hard Renaissance Science Fiction, Joseph Donaldson Jan 2019

History In American New Wave And Hard Renaissance Science Fiction, Joseph Donaldson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the novels of American New Wave Science Fiction authors Philip K. Dick and Ursula K. Le Guin as well as the novels of American Hard Renaissance Science Fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson. This examination places the rhetoric of these three authors into the larger discourse in Science Fiction that metaphorically visualizes the physics of space-time, historiography, periodization, and narrative form. By crafting nonteleological arguments against hard determinism, Dick and Le Guin effect Robinson’s ahistorical perspectives celebrating human agency

Hidden Cracks In The Leaking Stem Pipeline: Retention Within First-Generation Latinx Students In Baccalaureate Stem Programs At Predominately White Institutions, Kevin Kandamby Jan 2019

Hidden Cracks In The Leaking Stem Pipeline: Retention Within First-Generation Latinx Students In Baccalaureate Stem Programs At Predominately White Institutions, Kevin Kandamby

Pitzer Senior Theses

This thesis documents the lived experiences of first-generation Latinx students navigating

through predominately white institutions while attaining or attempting to attain a STEM degree. To examine this, twelve students from five different institutions were interviewed in semi- structured focus groups to better understand the educational trajectories of students in STEM. Inadequate high school preparation, educational disparities, mental health, and lack of institutional support were some of the reoccurring concerns students had across all focus groups. Students also highlighted that cultural competency across faculty in STEM, support from identity groups, and returning back to their Latinx community to serve as professionals …

Preparation And Characterization Of Multimodal Hybrid Organic And Inorganic Nanocrystals Of Camptothecin And Gold, Christin P. Hollis, Alan K. Dozier, Barbara L. Knutson, Tonglei Li

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

We demonstrate a novel inorganic-organic crystalline nanoconstruct, where gold atoms were imbedded in the crystal lattices as defects of camptothecin nanocrystals, suggesting its potential use as simultaneous agents for cancer therapy and bioimaging. The incorporation of gold, a potential computed tomography (CT) contrast agent, in the nanocrystals of camptothecin was detected by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and further quantified by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometers (ICP-OES). Due to gold's high attenuation coefficient, only a relatively small amount needs to be present in order to create a good noise-to-contrast ratio in CT imaging. The imbedded …

Evaluating And Improving Consumer Perceptions Of The Agriculture Industry, Katelyn Berndt

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Consumer perceptions of the agriculture industry are increasingly important as alternative labeling and non-conventional options become more common. Consumers are seeking a more dominant role in the conversation about their food. This study explores how the agriculture industry can respond in a way that improves consumer perceptions and builds trust. The study also seeks to answer the question of whether country of birth or background affects consumer perceptions of agriculture. The research model includes a QuestionPro survey completed by students at South Dakota State University, representing consumers in the Millennial generation who are more likely to respond positively to transparent …

Modeling Pyran Formation In The Molybdenum Cofactor: Protonation Of Quinoxalyl–Dithiolene Promoting Pyran Cyclization, Douglas R. Gisewhite, Alexandra L. Nagelski, Daniel C. Cummins, Glenn P.A. Yap, Sharon J. Nieter Burgmayer

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

Mononuclear Mo and W enzymes require a unique ligand known as molybdopterin (MPT). This ligand binds the metal through a dithiolene chelate, and the dithiolenebridges a reduced pyranopterin group. Pyran scission and formation have been proposed as a reaction of the MPT ligand that may occur within the enzymes to adjust reactivity at the Mo atom. We address this issue by investigating oxo−Mo(IV)model complexes containing dithiolenes substituted by pterinor quinoxaline and a hydroxyalkyl poised to form a pyran ring. While the pterin−dithiolene model complex exhibits a low energy, reversible pyran cyclization, here we report that pyran cyclization does not spontaneously occur …

DNA damage responses (DDR) to double-strand breaks (DSBs) alter cellular transcription programs at the genome-wide level. Through processes that are less well understood, DSBs also alter transcriptional responses locally, which may be important for efficient DSB repair. Here, we developed an approach to elucidate the

Potential Role Of Gut Microbiota In Induction And Regulation Of Innate Immune Memory, Shikha Negi, Deepjyoti Kumar Das, Susanta Pahari, Sajid Nadeem, Javed N Agrewala

Open Access Publications

The gut microbiota significantly regulates the development and function of the innate and adaptive immune system. The attribute of immunological memory has long been linked only with adaptive immunity. Recent evidence indicates that memory is also present in the innate immune cells such as monocytes/macrophages and natural killer cells. These cells exhibit pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) that recognize microbe- or pathogen-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs or PAMPs) expressed by the microbes. Interaction between PRRs and MAMPs is quite crucial since it triggers the sequence of signaling events and epigenetic rewiring that not only play a cardinal role in modulating the activation …

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is widely known as deleterious for many organisms since it can cause damage to biomolecules either directly or indirectly via the formation of reactive oxygen species. The goal of this study was to analyze the capacity of high-mountain Espeletia hartwegiana plant phyllosphere microorganisms to survive UVR and to identify genes related to resistance strategies. A strain of Deinococcus swuensis showed a high survival rate of up to 60% after UVR treatment at 800J/m2 and was used for differential expression analysis using RNA-seq after exposing cells to 400J/m2 of UVR (with >95% survival rate). Differentially expressed genes were …

Models Dont Decompose That Way: A Holistic View Of Idealized Models, Collin Rice Jan 2019

Models Dont Decompose That Way: A Holistic View Of Idealized Models, Collin Rice

Philosophy Faculty Research and Scholarship

Many (if not most) accounts of scientific modelling assume that models can be decomposed into the contributions made by their accurate and inaccurate parts. These accounts then argue that the inaccurate parts of the model can be justified by distorting only what is irrelevant. In this article, I argue that this decompositional strategy requires three assumptions that are not typically met by our best scientific models. In response, I propose an alternative view in which idealized models are characterized as holistically distorted representations that are justified by allowing for the application of various (mathematical) modelling techniques.
