A new 30-m spatial resolution global shoreline vector (GSV) was developed from annual composites of 2014 Landsat satellite imagery. The semi-automated classification of the imagery was accomplished by manual selection of training points representing water and non-water classes along the entire global coastline. Polygon topology was applied to the GSV, resulting in a new characterisation of the number and size of global islands. Three size classes of islands were mapped: continental mainlands (5), islands greater than 1 km2 (21,818), and islands smaller than 1 km2 (318,868). The GSV represents the shore zone land and water interface boundary, and is a …

Sustained global ocean observations are needed to recognise, understand, and manage changes in marine biodiversity, resources and habitats, and to implement wise conservation and sustainable development strategies. To meet this need, the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), a network of observing systems distributed around the world and coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) has proposed Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) that are relevant to both the scientific and the broader community, including resource managers. Building a network that is truly global requires expanding participation beyond scientists from well-resourced countries to a far broader representation of the global community. New approaches …

Effects Of Rhinacanthin-C In Multidrug-Resistance Breast Cancer Cells, Suwichak Chaisit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Rhinacanthin-C (RN-C) is a major bioactive naphthoquinone ester found in Rhinacanthus nasutus Kurz (Acanthaceae). This compound has potential therapeutic value as an anticancer agent. Rhinacanthin-C was reported to enhance doxorubicin cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells through direct inhibition of P-gp activity. However, its ability in reversing multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer cells through the down-regulation of P-gp expression, alteration of detoxification system, and increase in apoptosis proteins remains unreported. Thus, this study was to investigate the potential MDR reversal effect of rhinacanthin-C and its underlying mechanisms in MCF-7/DOX. In this study, rhinacanthin-C (1 µM, 48 h) significantly enhanced cytotoxicity of …

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience
A paradigm shift has emerged in Parkinson's disease (PD) highlighting the prominent role of CD4+ Tregs in pathogenesis and treatment. Bench to bedside research, conducted by others and our own laboratories, advanced a neuroprotective role for Tregs making pharmacologic transformation of immediate need. Herein, a vasoactive intestinal peptide receptor-2 (VIPR2) peptide agonist, LBT-3627, was developed as a neuroprotectant for PD-associated dopaminergic neurodegeneration. Employing both 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and α-synuclein (α-Syn) overexpression models in rats, the sequential administration of LBT-3627 increased Treg activity without altering cell numbers both in naïve animals and during progressive nigrostriatal degeneration. LBT-3627 administration was linked to …

Autonomic And Redox Imbalance Correlates With T-Lymphocyte Inflammation In A Model Of Chronic Social Defeat Stress, Cassandra M. Moshfegh, Safwan K. Elkhatib, Christopher W. Collins, Allison J. Kohl, Adam J. Case
Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology
Patients diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at a significantly elevated risk of developing comorbid inflammatory conditions, but the mechanisms underlying this predilection remain unclear. Our previous work has shown that T-lymphocytes exposed to elevated levels of norepinephrine (NE) displayed a pro-inflammatory signature reminiscent of an autoreactive phenotype. With this, we hypothesized that the increased sympathetic tone observed during psychological trauma may be promoting pro-inflammatory T-lymphocytes, which causes a predisposition to comorbid inflammatory conditions. Here, we examined the consequences of psychological trauma on splenic T-lymphocytes using a mouse model of repeated social defeat stress. Social defeat led to anxiety-like …
Perceived Threat To Paternity Reduces Liklihood Of Paternal Provisioning In House Wrens, Rachael A. Disciullo, Charles F. Thompson, Scott K. Sakaluk
Perceived Threat To Paternity Reduces Liklihood Of Paternal Provisioning In House Wrens, Rachael A. Disciullo, Charles F. Thompson, Scott K. Sakaluk
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Biparental care is a critical and, occasionally, unequally shared obligation that ensures that young survive to maturity. Such care may be complicated in systems in which one parent, typically the male, is unsure of his genetic relatedness to the young. Males may reduce paternal provisioning when full paternity is not assured, as occurs in mating systems in which females engage in extrapair copulations. Moreover, other factors independent of extrapair matings, such as male personality traits, likely also affect the level of paternal care. In this study, we determined the effect of a paternity threat event (i.e., a conspecific or a …

Group-Based Physical Activity Trajectories In Children Transitioning From Elementary To High School, Russell R. Pate
Group-Based Physical Activity Trajectories In Children Transitioning From Elementary To High School, Russell R. Pate
Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Background: Physical activity has been observed repeatedly to decline as children transition into adolescence; however, few studies have explored the possibility that sub-groups of children experience unique patterns of change during this transition. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine the physical activity trajectories in clusters of youth transitioning from 5th to 11th grade.
Methods: Participants (n = 652) were recruited as 5th graders (ages 10–12 years) from elementary schools (n = 21) in two school districts. Demographic, anthropometric, and physical activity data were collected once per year when children were in 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, …

What do people want? Few questions are more fundamental to psychological science than this. Yet, existing taxonomies disagree on both the number and content of goals. We thus adopted a lexical approach and investigated the structure of goal-relevant words from the natural English lexicon. Through an intensive rating process, 1,060 goal-relevant English words were first located. In Studies 1-2, two relatively large and diverse samples (total n = 1,026) rated their commitment to approaching or avoiding these goals. Principal component analyses yielded 4 replicable components: Prominence, Inclusiveness, Negativity prevention, and Tradition (the PINT Taxonomy). Study 3-7 (total n = 1,396) …
Have Your Cake And Eat It Too: Cognitive Neurology And Negligence Law In North Carolina, Derek J. Dittmar
Have Your Cake And Eat It Too: Cognitive Neurology And Negligence Law In North Carolina, Derek J. Dittmar
Campbell Law Review
Sometimes a new solution is the best way to fix an old problem. Currently, relying on a case from the early nineteenth century, North Carolina courts refuse to consider an individual's cognitive disability when determining whether she acted reasonably in a negligence case. In other words, juries are instructed to hold a mentally disabled individual to the same duty of care they would use to judge an able-minded individual. Litigants are not allowed to discuss their clients' mental disabilities. This puts a great perspective strain on mentally disabled individuals who are already among the most disenfranchised groups in America.

Adapting An Elementary School Nutrition Context Assessment For High School Settings And Students, Deborah H. John, Beret Halverson, Tia H. Ho
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
The school nutrition context is comprised of supportive environmental features, programs, policies, and social relationships that shape students’ healthy dietary choices and patterns. When engaging students as change agents, advocates, and partners in making healthy nutrition choices easier, environmental assessment tools developed for adults may be too complex or inappropriately tailored for youth. Adolescents need practical, user-tailored tools that reliably measure the food and beverage environments they encounter in school to inform youth-led changes to the school nutrition context. To meet this need, an evidence-based school environmental assessment was adapted for use in high schools by students as evaluators. Cooperative …

Transboundary collaborations related to international freshwater are critical for ensuring equitable, efficient, and sustainable shared access to our planet’s most fundamental resources. Visual artifacts, such as knowledge maps, functioning as boundary objects, are used in hydropolitical contexts to convey understandings and facilitate discussion across scales about challenges and opportunities from multiple perspectives. Such focal points for discussion are valuable in creating shared, socially negotiated priorities and integrating diverse and often disparate cultural perspectives that naturally exist in the context of international transboundary water resources. Visual boundary objects can also represent the collective mental models of the actor countries and transboundary …

Nationalizing Trips: An Examination Through Exceptions, 18 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 285 (2019), Evan Tallmadge
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
What should not be patentable? The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (“TRIPS”) codifies certain categories of subject matter that nations can exclude from patent protection. This Article examines how nations have interpreted these exclusions through an analysis of their national manuals of patent examining procedure and more importantly what explicit exceptions to patentability these countries have listed. The Article proceeds to analyze both the similarities and differences in approaches towards exclusions that attempt to ban the same subject matter from patentability and differences in what countries have chosen to bar from patenting. The Article concludes with an …
The Golden Claims: Necessary Support For Nonprovisional Application Prior Art References To Be Granted Provisional Application Filing Dates During Inter Partes Review Proceedings, 18 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 326 (2019), Madison Makeever
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
Whether to beat an impending disclosure, disclose the most information possible, or simply to get the earliest possible filing date, provisional patent applications are a beneficial way to protect your patent rights. The few formal and statutory requirements allow provisionals to be prepared on a rush basis. The Federal Circuit held in 2017 that published nonprovisional applications can constitute prior art as of its provisional filing date but only as to elements in the application. However, ambiguity regarding published applications in the Federal Circuit’s 2015 precedent for awarding a patent it’s provisional filing date may lead to increased patent invalidation …
When Enough Is Not Enough: Can Post Filing Experimental Data Bridge The Gap In Patent Disclosure Of Non-Enabling Specifications In The Unpredictable Arts?, 18 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 496 (2019), Fei Sha
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
On issues of 35 U.S.C. §112, the Federal Circuit has been inconsistent in determining the extent to which patent applicants need to disclose examples of their claimed inventions in patent specifications to fully enable their patent claims. Confusion as to how many or what types of examples amount to sufficient disclosure is augmented for inventions in the unpredictable arts, such as chemistry, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals. Current practice skewing towards disclosure of examples in greater numbers is a misguided effort to satisfy enablement, as shown by patents at issue in two recent Federal Circuit cases. A qualitative approach to disclosure is …

Patent Infringement Under 35 U.S.C. § 271(G) For Goods Made In The United States, 19 Uic Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 64 (2019), Peter Hecker
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
Section 271(g) filled a loophole that allowed companies to escape patent infringement by producing goods overseas and then importing them. In filling this loophole, Congress may have unintentionally broadened patent liability for the production and use of goods in the United States. This paper discusses important ramifications of this broadened language and encourages the Federal Circuit or Congress to clarify the extent of patent infringement under Section 271(g).

The Role Of Dunc13 In Ethanol Tolerance, Yusuke Wachi
The Role Of Dunc13 In Ethanol Tolerance, Yusuke Wachi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the effects of ethanol on presynaptic activity have been studied, the molecular mechanisms and the changes in gene expression which are responsible for inducing ethanol tolerance are unclear. Munc13-1 is an active-zone protein that is essential for presynaptic vesicle fusion. This protein interacts with vesicle fusion machinery at presynaptic active zones in the mammalian brain. The C1 domain of Munc13-1 binds diacylglycerol (DAG), which helps membrane localization of this protein and promotes vesicle fusion, facilitating synaptic vesicle release. Previously, it was shown that ethanol binds to the C1 domain of Munc13-1 in vitro at concentrations below 100 mM (Das …
An Exploration Of Relationships Between Parenting Stress And Primary Headache Disorders, Yelena Louise Johnson
An Exploration Of Relationships Between Parenting Stress And Primary Headache Disorders, Yelena Louise Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stress is the most commonly reported trigger for headache and stress affects headache both directly through resulting physiological changes and indirectly through its effects on lifestyle and coping behaviors. However one form of stress that has been neglected within headache is parenting. Parenting stress is defined as the imbalance between parents’ perceptions of available resources and their perceived demands of parenthood. Many variables have been established as predictors of parenting stress (e.g. demographic variables child behavior maternal depression) though fewer studies have examined its effects on health. Given that headache and parenthood share similar demographic distributions and risk factors exploration …

Developing Zebrafish As An In Vivo Model To Screen Compounds For Anti-Cancer Activity In Human Breast Cancer, Trisha Dhawan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Breast Cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer; 1:8 women are at risk of developing BC in her lifetime. Cancer metastasis causes the majority of deaths in BC patients. Moreover, side effects of traditional chemotherapeutic drugs (TCD) impair the quality of life of these patients. Discovery and development of safe and effective new therapies is imperative for the treatment of BC and targeting metastasis. The goal herein is to further expand the applicability of in vivo xenotransplantation of human BC cells in transgenic zebrafish to screen potential chemotherapeutics for toxicity and efficacy. For xenotransplantation, MCF-7, BT-474, and MDA-MB-231 BC …
