An Evolving Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar On Science And Religion, Joseph W. Shane

Honors in Practice Online Archive

The majority of this essay describes the content, pedagogy, and assessments associated with an undergraduate, interdisciplinary honors seminar on science and religion. The seminar is structured around five major themes: (a) philosophy of science, religion, and their interactions, (b) historical and contemporary case studies, (c) the controversy over biological evolution in the United States as a necessary case study, (d) comparative religion and science, and (e) contemporary issues at the intersection of science and religion. I also describe the consistency between the seminar and the mission of the honors college at my institution. Given the prominence of both science and …

The Fearless Teaching Framework: A Model To Synthesize Foundational Education Research For University Instructors, Alice E. Donlan, Sandra M. Loughlin, Virginia L. Byrne Jan 2019

The Fearless Teaching Framework: A Model To Synthesize Foundational Education Research For University Instructors, Alice E. Donlan, Sandra M. Loughlin, Virginia L. Byrne

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

There is often a disconnect between the unit of analysis in rigorous education research, and the types of recommendations that instructors find the most useful to improve their teaching. Research often focuses on narrow slices of the student experience, and university instructors often require broad recommendations. We present the Fearless Teaching Framework to address this gap between research and practice. In this framework, we define four pieces of effective teaching: classroom climate, course content, teaching practices, and assessment strategies. We argue that these are appropriate areas of focus for instructor growth, based on their relations to student engagement.

The Criminalization Of Muslims In The United States, 2016, Sarah Beth Kaufman Jan 2019

The Criminalization Of Muslims In The United States, 2016, Sarah Beth Kaufman

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

The criminalization of Muslims—framing an Islamic religious identity as a problem to be solved using state crime control logic—is undeniably in process in the United States. Local, state, and federal statutes target Muslims for surveillance and exclusion, and media sources depict Muslims as synonymous with terrorism, as others have shown. This paper analyzes the public’s role in the criminalization of Islam, which I call “cr-Islamization.” Drawing on in-depth, qualitative interviews in a major Southwest city during the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, I detail how the majority of 144 politically, racially, and economically diverse interviewees talk about Muslims as …

Staphylococcus aureus is commonly found as normal flora on human skin. As such, it is a frequent cause of skin and soft tissue infection that often spreads to deeper tissue. It has become an especially important microorganism in both clinical and community settings due to its propensity to acquire resistance to antibiotics as well as the invasive mechanisms it utilizes. Specifically, community-associated methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) strains have developed resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and, perhaps more importantly, many invasive pathogenic mechanisms. Thisdissertation explores novel virulence mechanisms of CA-MRSA infections through characterization of novel protein within the prevalent CA-MRSA strain, …

Trans Formations In The Vatican’S War On "Gender Ideology", Mary Anne Case Jan 2019

Trans Formations In The Vatican’S War On "Gender Ideology", Mary Anne Case

Articles

This article will trace the Vatican's decades-long, worldwide, multifront war on what it has come to call "gender ideology" from its very recent incarnation in Donald Trump's United States back through its origins in the last century, highlighting the central role that concerns about transgender rights have always played for the two popes who have most directly shaped the contours of this war, Benedict XVI and Francis. Among the claims of the paper is that the conceptual apparatus behind the Vatican's anathematization of the complex of feminist, reproductive, and LGBT rights issues it has for a quarter century lumped together …

A Review And Synthesis Of The Work Ability Literature, David Cadiz, Grant Brady, Jennifer R. Rineer, Donald M. Truxillo

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is a growing literature investigating aging and work due to increasing numbers of older working adults. One emerging research line has focused on work ability (WA), or workers’ functional capacity to meet work demands, including the antecedents of WA and how WA affects work attitudes, performance, and retirement. Our article provides the first comprehensive multidisciplinary (e.g., medicine, psychology, management) review of the WA literature to date. In our review, we discuss the evolution and limitations of WA measurement and conceptualization that could limit future advancements in WA research, integrate WA with organizational and lifespan development theories, synthesize the extant …

The annual trade in exotic vertebrates as pets is a multi-billion- dollar global business. Thousands of species, and tens of millions of individual animals, are shipped both internationally and within countries to satisfy this demand. Most research on the exotic pet trade has focused on its contribution to native biodiversity loss and disease spread. Here, we synthesize information across taxa and research disciplines to document the exotic pet trade’s contribution to vertebrate biological invasions. We show recent and substantial worldwide growth in the number of non-native animal populations introduced via this invasion pathway, which demonstrates a strong potential to increase …

Immune cell infiltration of tumors and the tumor microenvironment can be an important component for determining patient outcomes. For example, immune and stromal cell presence inferred by deconvolving patient gene expression data may help identify high risk patients or suggest a course of treatment. One particularly powerful family of deconvolution techniques uses signature matrices of genes that uniquely identify each cell type as determined from single cell type purified gene expression data. Many methods from this family have been recently published, often including new signature matrices appropriate for a single purpose, such as investigating a specific type of tumor. The …

Ensuring Quality Standards And Reproducible Research For Data Analysis Services In Oncology: A Cooperative Service Model., Frank Emmert-Streib, Matthias Dehmer, Olli Yli-Harja

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Modern molecular high-throughput devices, e.g., next-generation sequencing, have transformed medical research. Resulting data sets are usually high-dimensional on a genomic-scale providing multi-factorial information from intertwined molecular and cellular activities of genes and their products. This genomics-revolution installed precision medicine offering breathtaking opportunities for patient's diagnosis and treatment. However, due to the speed of these developments the quality standards of the involved data analyses are lacking behind, as exemplified by the infamous Duke Saga. In this paper, we argue in favor of a two-stage cooperative serve model that couples data generation and data analysis in the most beneficial way from the …

Neural repair after stroke involves initiation of a cellular proliferative program in the form of angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and molecular growth signals in the surrounding tissue elements. This cellular environment constitutes a niche in which regeneration of new blood vessels and new neurons leads to partial tissue repair after stroke. Cancer metastasis has similar proliferative cellular events in the brain and other organs. Do cancer and CNS tissue repair share similar cellular processes? In this study, we identify a novel role of the regenerative neurovascular niche induced by stroke in promoting brain melanoma metastasis through enhancing cellular interactions with surrounding niche …

"Do They Know The Normal Language?": Language Attitudes And Ideologies In German Hip Hop Culture, Matt Garley Jan 2019

"Do They Know The Normal Language?": Language Attitudes And Ideologies In German Hip Hop Culture, Matt Garley

Publications and Research

This article presents a theoretical discussion of the relationship between language ideologies and language attitudes and builds on previous work by providing an organized framework connecting these notions. This framework is evaluated with reference to online and offline ethnographic work surrounding attitudes and ideologies about anglicisms, or English loanwords, among German hip hop fans and artists. Language attitudes are theorized as individual thoughts and expressions about language, and are often, but not always, informed by individual reproductions of language ideologies, which are conceived of as systematic, shared over groups of individuals, enduring, and mediated. Language ideologies can then be organized …
