Viral Sovereignty, Intellectual Property, And The Changing Global System For Sharing Pathogens For Infectious Disease Research, Sam F. Halabi Jan 2019

Viral Sovereignty, Intellectual Property, And The Changing Global System For Sharing Pathogens For Infectious Disease Research, Sam F. Halabi

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the substantial changes under way in the global system for infectious disease research demonstrated by the changing practices in negotiating MTAs. Instead of the open system of sharing bacterial and viral human pathogens that characterized the research system for much of the 20th Century, notions of "viral sovereignty," access contingent upon provisions like sharing research benefits, and acrimonious negotiations, are far more common. The increasing barriers to the flow of research material and related data like genetic sequencing information are posing threats to public health responses and the potential use of such resources in diagnostic, therapeutic, and …

Dung Beetle Functional Traits Related To Restoration Management Practices In Tallgrass Prairie, Sheryl C. Hosler Jan 2019

Dung Beetle Functional Traits Related To Restoration Management Practices In Tallgrass Prairie, Sheryl C. Hosler

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The restoration of degraded ecosystems often focuses on reestablishing species richness and diversity of native organisms, especially plants. However, functional trait descriptions of communities are emerging as a more comprehensive approach to evaluating restorations, including consumer communities. I examined the species composition and functional traits of dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabeidae) communities across a chronosequence of restored tallgrass prairie in Illinois, in which sites varied in the presence of bison and the application of prescribed fire during the study. Data were collected on behavioral guild and body measurements, and functional diversity metrics (functional richness, evenness, divergence, and dispersion) were analyzed using …

La Heroica Alcahueta Dormía La Siesta: La Celestina’S Presence In La Regenta, Leyla Rouhi, Julie A. Cassiday Jan 2019

La Heroica Alcahueta Dormía La Siesta: La Celestina’S Presence In La Regenta, Leyla Rouhi, Julie A. Cassiday

Decimonónica

Our epigraph comes from the closing scene of the opening chapter of Leopoldo Alas’s La Regenta (1885). Here Vetusta’s resident erudite, Saturnino Bermúdez, shows the local cathedral to a provincial couple visiting “la heroica ciudad” (I: 135) while he clumsily flirts with Obdulia Fandiño, the town’s most scandalous citizen. This first chapter of La Regenta famously begins with all of Vetusta taking its daily siesta while it “descansaba oyendo entre sueños” (I: 136), as Fermín de Pas, canon theologian and vicar general, ascends the cathedral bell tower to survey his drowsing domain. The multiple symbolic functions of Vetusta’s geography have …

Progress At What Price?: Defenses Of Indigenous Peoples In Argentine Writing About Patagonia (1894-1904), Ashley Kerr

Decimonónica

Official history boasts that by the mid-1880s, the Argentine government had definitively brought Patagonia under national control, neutralizing the savagery associated with both the land and the indigenous people who lived there. The 1881 Tratado de Límites between Argentina and Chile and the 1884 Ley Orgánica de los Territorios Nacionales demarcated the limits of national sovereignty and organized the newly-formed provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego. General Lorenzo Vittner declared the successful end of the Conquista del desierto in 1885, ending military efforts to subdue indigenous populations in the south (Mases 59). At the …

Although vital to the immune system, macrophages can act as reservoirs for pathogens such as tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus. Limitations in the treatment of such diseases include targeting therapeutics directly to macrophages and the large systemic dosages needed. The objective of this study is to develop a nanoparticle (NP)-based drug delivery system that can provide targeted delivery into macrophages. Acetalated dextran (Ac-Dex) NP loaded with the lipophilic model compound curcumin (CUR) were synthesized and coated in 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-l-serine (DPPS), a phospholipid that induces phagocytosis in macrophages. DPPS-CUR NP were found to release 67.8% of encapsulated CUR within 24 …

Comparison Of Ferrate And Ozone Pre-Oxidation On Disinfection Byproduct Formation From Chlorination And Chloramination, Yanjun Jiang, Joseph E. Goodwill, John E. Tobiason, David A. Reckhow

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This study investigated the effects of ferrate and ozone pre-oxidation on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation from subsequent chlorination or chloramination. Two natural waters were treated at bench-scale under various scenarios (chlorine, chloramine, each with ferrate pre-oxidation, and each with pre-ozonation). The formation of brominated and iodinated DBPs in fortified natural waters was assessed. Results indicated ferrate and ozone pre-oxidation were comparable at molar equivalent doses for most DBPs. A net decrease in trihalomethanes (including iodinated forms), haloacetic acids (HAAs), dihaloacetonitrile, total organic chlorine, and total organic iodine was found with both pre-oxidants as compared to chlorination only. An increase in …

Ideological Analysis Of Colorblindness In Get Out, Danielle Goldstein Jan 2019

Ideological Analysis Of Colorblindness In Get Out, Danielle Goldstein

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

This ideological analysis of the horror film, Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele investigates three major ideological aspects that are poignant to the film. The main ideology that will be examined is “colorblindness” also known as colorblind racism, which is the belief or attitude that denying the existence of race will cure racism and achieve racial equality. The two other sub-ideologies that will be examined are multicultural racism and post-racism, as they are both facets of colorblindness and work together to reinforce one another in society. Colorblindness is apparent in the film’s dialogue that reveal attitudes regarding interracial dating …

Can Nanotechnology Be The Leading Method In Detecting And Treating Cerebral Tumors?, Daniel D. Singh, Zuri Jules-Culver Jan 2019

Can Nanotechnology Be The Leading Method In Detecting And Treating Cerebral Tumors?, Daniel D. Singh, Zuri Jules-Culver

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

Nanotechnology refers to the manipulation or design of materials and structures with desired features in the 1nm–1000 nm size range. The blood brain barrier (BBB) is a major obstacle that drugs must overcome in order to reach tumor cells. The role of this barrier is to transport essential nutrients while protecting and regulating the internal environment. Nanoparticles have been shown to transport drugs through this barrier and accumulate in tumor cells. This is significant since nanoparticles are drug carriers allowing chemotherapeutic drugs to accumulate in target areas (Sun et al., 2017). This is possible because they are able to be …

Footnote 43: Recovering Justice Powell’S Anti-Preference Framing Of Affirmative Action, Devon W. Carbado

Faculty Articles

For more than four decades, scholars have been debating the constitutional parameters of affirmative action. Central to this debate is Justice Powell’s opinion in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. For good or bad, that opinion has set not only the doctrinal terms on which lawyers litigate and judges adjudicate the constitutionality of affirmative action, but the normative terms on which many in the public arena discuss the policy as well. However, in all the controversy and contestation over affirmative action, little attention has been paid to footnote forty-three of Justice Powell’s Bakke opinion. There, Justice Powell suggested …

A Composite Review Of The Proposed Molecular Mechanisms And Genetic Components Underlying Parkinson’S Disease, Paige Brodrick Jan 2019

A Composite Review Of The Proposed Molecular Mechanisms And Genetic Components Underlying Parkinson’S Disease, Paige Brodrick

Scripps Senior Theses

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive death of dopaminergic neurons present in the substantia nigra. The clinical presentation of PD includes tremors, slowed movement (bradykinesia), muscle and limb rigidity, and difficulty with walking and balancing. While many environmental factors can affect the onset and progression of the disease, genetic mutations have a large influence. Of the identified PD-linked genetic mutations, mutations in the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) are one of the most common genetic causes of PD. Located in endosomes, LRRK2 has been shown to play a role in the sorting and endocytosis …

Forms Of Supplemental Selenium In Vitamin-Mineral Mixes Differentially Affect Serological And Hepatic Parameters Of Growing Beef Steers Grazing Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue, Yang Jia Jan 2019

Forms Of Supplemental Selenium In Vitamin-Mineral Mixes Differentially Affect Serological And Hepatic Parameters Of Growing Beef Steers Grazing Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue, Yang Jia

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Consumption of endophyte-infected tall fescue results in a syndrome of negatively altered physiological systems, collectively known as fescue toxicosis. Another challenge to endophyte-infected tall fescue -based beef cattle operations is that the soils often are selenium (Se) poor, necessitating the need to provide supplemental Se. To test the general hypothesis that different forms of supplemental Se would ameliorate the negative effects of fescue toxicosis, predominately-Angus steers (BW = 183 ± 34 kg) were randomly selected from herds of fall-calving cows grazing an endophyte-infected tall fescue pasture and consuming vitamin-mineral mixes that contained 35 ppm Se as sodium selenite (ISe), SELPLEX …

Urolithin A, A Gut Metabolite, Improves Insulin Sensitivity Through Augmentation Of Mitochondrial Function And Biogenesis, Ashley Mulcahy Toney, Rong Fan, Yibo Xian, Virginia Chaidez, Amanda E. Ramer-Tait, Soonkyu Chung

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Objective: Urolithin A (UroA) is a major metabolite of ellagic acid produced following microbial catabolism in the gut. Emerging evidence has suggested that UroA modulates energy metabolism in various cells. However, UroA’s physiological functions related to obesity and insulin resistance remain unclear. Methods: Male mice were intraperitoneally administrated either UroA or dimethyl sulfoxide (vehicle) along with a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. Insulin sensitivity was evaluated via glucose and insulin tolerance tests and acute insulin signaling. The effects of UroA on hepatic triglyceride accumulation, adipocyte size, mitochondrial DNA content, and proinflammatory gene expressions were determined. The impact of UroA on …

Milk-Derived Exosomes And Metabolic Regulation, Janos Zempleni, Sonal Sukreet, Fang Zhou, Di Wu, Ezra Mutai

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Exosomes are natural nanoparticles that play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. Communication is achieved through the transfer of cargos, such as microRNAs, from donor to recipient cells and binding of exosomes to cell surface receptors. Exosomes and their cargos are also obtained from dietary sources, such as milk. Exosome and cell glycoproteins are crucial for intestinal uptake. A large fraction of milk exosomes accumulates in the brain, whereas the tissue distribution of microRNA cargos varies among distinct species of microRNA. The fraction of milk exosomes that escapes absorption elicits changes in microbial communities in the gut. Dietary depletion of …

Report From The Stem 2026 Workshop On Assessment, Evaluation, And Accreditation, Rebecca Bates, Angela Arnold, Cary Komoto, Peggy Brickman, R. Alan Cheville, Elizabeth Longley, Jose Mestre, Mihaela Sabin, James Warnock

Reports

A gathering of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) higher education stakeholders met in November 2018 to consider the relationship between innovation in education and assessment. When we talk about assessment in higher education, it is inextricably linked to both evaluation and accreditation, so all three were considered. The first question we asked was can we build a nation of learners? This starts with considering the student, first and foremost. As educators, this is a foundation of our exploration and makes our values transparent. As educators, how do we know we are having an impact? As members and implementers of …

Defending Behavior Of Peer Victimization In School And Cyber Context During Childhood And Adolescence: A Meta-Analytic Review Of Individual And Peer-Relational Characteristics, Ting-Lan Ma, Diana J. Meter, Wei-Ting Chen, Yen Lee

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

Adolescent defending of peer victimization in the school and cyber context has received increased attention in developmental science and is an important component of antibullying interventions. However, the overall prevalence, and individual characteristics that correlate with defending in adolescence, have not been systematically and statistically reviewed. Framed in Bronfenbrenner’s social-ecological theory, this meta-analytic review included 172 reports out of 155 studies of defending including 150,978 children and adolescent participants from 4 continents (i.e., North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia) to analyze two aspects: (1) the average proportion of defenders in the population and (2) associations between defending and individual and …

On The Interactions Of Augmin With Microtubules And The Mechanics Of The Cross-Linker Prc1, Alejandro Dottore Jan 2019

On The Interactions Of Augmin With Microtubules And The Mechanics Of The Cross-Linker Prc1, Alejandro Dottore

Student Theses and Dissertations

Cell division in eukaryotes requires the assembly and maintenance of a structure, the bipolar spindle, self-organized from microtubules and their associated proteins. A multitude of components have been identified to be involved in this organization, and solving the combinatorial of the conditions that lead to the specific set of configurations present in vivo remains an open question. This thesis presents reconstitutions from purified components used to study aspects of microtubule self-organization: first, the microtubule-nucleation-related augmin octameric complex was assessed at a single-molecule interaction level with microtubules; second, the cross-linker PRC1's frictional response resisting motion between two microtubule filaments was analyzed …

Neural Mechanisms That Control An Innate Foraging Behavior In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Alejandro Lopez-Cruz Jan 2019

Neural Mechanisms That Control An Innate Foraging Behavior In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Alejandro Lopez-Cruz

Student Theses and Dissertations

The ability to efficiently locate food is critical for survival. Thus, animals modify their foraging patterns based on recent experience and current conditions to increase their likelihood of finding food. One highly conserved foraging strategy is local search, an intensive exploration over several minutes of the region where food resources were last encountered. As time since the last food encounter passes, animals transition to global search strategies to explore distant areas. The local-to-global search foraging pattern has been observed in fish, reptiles, insects, birds, and mammals, yet few studies ask how an animal's brain generates this ancient behavior. Here, I …

Dopamine And The Temporal Dependence Of Learning And Memory, Annie Handler Jan 2019

Dopamine And The Temporal Dependence Of Learning And Memory, Annie Handler

Student Theses and Dissertations

Animal behavior is largely influenced by the seeking out of rewards and avoidance of punishments. Positive or negative reinforcements, like a food reward or painful shock, impart meaningful valence onto sensory cues in the animal's environment. The ability of animals to form associations between a sensory cue and a rewarding or punishing reinforcement permits them to adapt their future behavior to maximize reward and minimize punishments. Animals rely on the timing of events to infer the causal relationships between cues and outcomes –– sensory cues that precede a painful shock in time become associated with its onset and are imparted …

Center Manifold Dynamics In Randomly Coupled Oscillators And In Cochlea, Dimitrios Moirogiannis Jan 2019

Center Manifold Dynamics In Randomly Coupled Oscillators And In Cochlea, Dimitrios Moirogiannis

Student Theses and Dissertations

In dynamical systems theory, a fixed point of the activity is called nonhyperbolic if the linearization of the system around the fixed point has at least one eigenvalue with zero real part. The center manifold existence theorem guarantees the local existence of an invariant subspace of the activity, known as a center manifold, around nonhyperbolic fixed points. A growing number of theoretical and experimental studies suggest that neural systems utilize dynamics on center manifolds to display complex, nonlinear behavior and to flexibly adapt to wide-ranging sensory input parameters. In this thesis, I will present two lines of research exploring nonhyperbolicity …

The Role And Control Of Wnt Signalling In An Hesc Model Of Human Primitive Streak, Iain Martyn Jan 2019

The Role And Control Of Wnt Signalling In An Hesc Model Of Human Primitive Streak, Iain Martyn

Student Theses and Dissertations

In amniotes, gastrulation is marked by the creation of the primitive streak (PS) and is largely controlled by WNT, BMP, and ACTIVIN/NODAL signalling. Despite detailed characterization in model organisms, the human PS and the role these pathways play in its formation and patterning remains a mystery. In this work I focused on understanding the role and control of the WNT pathway in human PS development. Due to the ethical limitations of working with human embryos, I used an in vitro human embryonic stem cell (hESC) micropatterned "gastruloid" system. I first showed that in the human PS there is a conserved …

Non-Coding Rna Features Critical To The Replication Of Hiv-1, Matthew A. Takata Jan 2019

Non-Coding Rna Features Critical To The Replication Of Hiv-1, Matthew A. Takata

Student Theses and Dissertations

The HIV-1 genome contains RNA sequences and structures that control many aspects of viral replication including, but not limited to transcription, splicing, nuclear export, translation, packaging and reverse transcription. Despite this extensive existing catalogue of RNA sequences that are critical to its replication, chemical probing and targeting mutagenesis studies suggest that the HIV-1 genome may contain many more RNA elements of unknown important function. To determine whether there are additional, undiscovered cis-acting RNA elements in the HIV-1 genome that are important for viral replication, we conducted a global synonymous mutagenesis experiment. Sixteen mutant proviruses containing clusters of ~50 to ~200 …
