Faithful Parents: Choice Of Childcare Parentage Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2019

Faithful Parents: Choice Of Childcare Parentage Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness

College of Law Faculty Publications

In July 2017, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) approved and recommended for enactment in all U.S. states a new Uniform Parentage Act (UPA). This Act follows the 1973 and 2000 UPAs, which have been widely adopted. While all three UPAs recognize forms of childcare parentage beyond biological ties (in and outside of marital births) and formal adoptions, the 2017 UPA is quite expansive in recognizing such forms, including in its provisions on de facto parentage, voluntary acknowledgment parentage, and intended parentage of children born of assisted reproduction. These expanded forms of childcare parentage, relevant to …

The Nac Family Transcription Factor Gmnac42–1 Regulates Biosynthesis Of The Anticancer And Neuroprotective Glyceollins In Soybean, Md Asraful Jahan, Brianna Harris, Matthew Lowery, Katie Coburn, Aniello M. Infante, Ryan J. Percifield, Amanda G. Ammer, Nik Kovinich

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Glyceollins are isoflavonoid-derived pathogen-inducible defense metabolites (phytoalexins) from soybean (Glycine max L. Merr) that have important roles in providing defense against pathogens. They also have impressive anticancer and neuroprotective activities in mammals. Despite their potential usefulness as therapeutics, glyceollins are not economical to synthesize and are biosynthesized only transiently and in low amounts in response to specific stresses. Engineering the regulation of glyceollin biosynthesis may be a promising approach to enhance their bioproduction, yet the transcription factors (TFs) that regulate their biosynthesis have remained elusive. To address this, we first aimed to identify novel abiotic stresses that enhance …

Background: The global HIV burden among adolescents ages 10–19 is growing. This population concurrently confronts the multifaceted challenges of adolescence and living with HIV. With the goal of informing future interventions tailored to this group, we assessed sexual activity, HIV diagnosis disclosure, combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) adherence, and drug use among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in Lima, Peru.

Methods: Adolescents at risk or with a history of suboptimal cART adherence completed a self-administered, health behaviors survey and participated in support group sessions, which were audio recorded and used as a qualitative data source. Additionally, we conducted in-depth interviews with …

Novel Oncolytic Virotherapies For Cancer, Chase Joseph Burton Jan 2019

Novel Oncolytic Virotherapies For Cancer, Chase Joseph Burton

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Cancer is one of the world’s foremost causes of death, affecting over 15 million people. While traditional therapies offer some efficacy to patients novel treatments are needed to combat this epidemic. In recent years, novel immune- and combination-therapies have shown great strides in easing the cancer burden for some patients. One of these novel treatment modalities is oncolytic virotherapy, a form of immunotherapy which uses viruses with an inherent tumor specific tropism. Oncolytic virotherapy is an attractive option due to both its inherent immunotherapeutic potential as well as the ease by which it can be combined with other treatment modalities. …

Preparing Social Workers For Interprofessional Practice: A Conceptual Interprofessional Education (Ipe) Competency-Based Model, Carlos Devonte Graham Jan 2019

Preparing Social Workers For Interprofessional Practice: A Conceptual Interprofessional Education (Ipe) Competency-Based Model, Carlos Devonte Graham

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Interprofessional education (IPE) continues to advance as the best method to prepare health care professionals for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP). Large numbers of US social workers enter the workforce unprepared for interprofessional collaborative practice (Taylor & Coffey, 2014; Jones & Phillips, 2016; Stanhope et al., 2015). Without a clear understanding of the redundancies between social work educational standards and IPE competencies it is difficult to design IPE based courses for social work students with adequate content. The study purpose was to (1) identify were there was redundancy between the IPEC core competencies and CSWE 2015 EPAS competencies, (2) identify gaps …

The Structural Basis For Brain Health, Barbara Khalibinzwa Marebwa Jan 2019

The Structural Basis For Brain Health, Barbara Khalibinzwa Marebwa

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality in the United States. Stroke and dementia are the leading causes of adult disability worldwide, and the 5th and 6th leading causes of mortality respectively in the United States. Furthermore, CVD annually accounts for approximately $330 billion in direct and indirect costs in the United States: approximately one in seven health care dollars is spent on CVD. While these diseases have different etiologies, and present with different clinical manifestations and prognosis, converging evidence increasingly supports the idea of CVD as a common pathophysiological origin of cerebrovascular disease, potentially indicating a complex …

Development Of Diffusion Mri Methodology To Quantify White Matter Integrity Underlying Post-Stroke Anomia, Emilie Tuijnder Mckinnon Jan 2019

Development Of Diffusion Mri Methodology To Quantify White Matter Integrity Underlying Post-Stroke Anomia, Emilie Tuijnder Mckinnon

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

In 1909 German neurologist Korbinian Brodmann wrote “functional localization of the cerebral cortex without the lead of anatomy is impossible... In all domains, physiology has its firmest foundations in anatomy [1”. While histology is the current gold standard for studying brain microstructure, it is primarily a post-mortem technique that has an average resolution of one micrometer making it impractical for studying the entire brain. Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) is ideally suited to study whole-brain tissue microstructure by sensitizing the MRI contrast to water diffusion, which has a length scale on the order of micrometers. Even though dMRI is applied …

Defining The Breast Cancer N-Glycome In Clinical Tissues, Danielle Angela Scott Jan 2019

Defining The Breast Cancer N-Glycome In Clinical Tissues, Danielle Angela Scott

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Despite decades of studies documenting the association between aberrant glycosylation and breast cancer formation and progression, these investigations have failed to make a significant impact in the clinic. This highlights the inherent biological and clinical heterogeneity of breast cancers. In this thesis, we utilize MALDI mass spectrometry imaging and other glycoproteomic techniques to classify the N-glycome of clinical FFPE breast cancer samples. By doing this, we were able to identify glycosylation patterns specific to tissue regions, cancer stage and patient outcome. When analyzing tissue specific regions of tumor, stroma and necrosis, we found that the tumor regions contained high mannose …

Tackling Specialty Drug Access And Cost Of Care In Our Modern Age: Using Pediatric Crohn’S Disease Care As A Model, J. Antonio Quiros

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: Biologic agents that block tumor necrosis factor-α (anti-TNF) have been FDA approved for treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis, in both adults and children, they have better efficacy when started early in disease course but access can be limited due to cost. The objective of this study is to address whether the current differential drug coverage methods between privately and publicly insured children is associated with timely access to biologics and differences in healthcare utilization using pediatric Crohn’s disease as a model. Methods: Children with a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease were identified from Truven Health …

Enhancing Aldehyde Detoxification As A Novel Therapy For Liver Fibrosis And Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury, Hereward John Wimborne Jan 2019

Enhancing Aldehyde Detoxification As A Novel Therapy For Liver Fibrosis And Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury, Hereward John Wimborne

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Oxidative stress is a common component and important mediator in the pathogenesis of many liver injuries and of liver fibrosis. Although reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known to have effects on many important biological macromolecules and cell organelles, such as mitochondria, how oxidative stress causes liver injury/fibrosis has not been fully elucidated. ROS oxidize membrane lipids to form lipid radicals which undergo ß-scission to form aldehydes, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). These aldehydes are highly reactive and readily form adducts with proteins and nucleic acids. Relatively little is known about the role of aldehydes in the pathogenesis of …

Social Learning Through Associative Processes: A Computational Theory, Johan Lind, Stefano Ghirlanda, Magnus Enquist Jan 2019

Social Learning Through Associative Processes: A Computational Theory, Johan Lind, Stefano Ghirlanda, Magnus Enquist

Publications and Research

Social transmission of information is a key phenomenon in the evolution of behaviour and in the establishment of traditions and culture. The diversity of social learning phenomena has engendered a diverse terminology and numerous ideas about underlying learning mechanisms, at the same time that some researchers have called for a unitary analysis of social learning in terms of associative processes. Leveraging previous attempts and a recent computational formulation of associative learning, we analyse the following learning scenarios in some generality: learning responses to social stimuli, including learning to imitate; learning responses to non-social stimuli; learning sequences of actions; learning to …

2019 Idea Of Nature Public Lecture Series Schedule (Flyer), Samantha Harvey

The Idea of Nature Public Lecture Series

The goal of the series is to promote interdisciplinary inquiry about the environment and to foster dialogue across the campus and community, based on the premise that big questions need interdisciplinary answers.

How are conceptions of nature expressed in the sciences, literature, art, philosophy, music and other disciplines? How did ideas of nature change from 1660 to the present, a period of radical change and revolution?

These lectures are free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception with a no-host bar and appetizers.

Identification Of Candidate Mirna Biomarkers For Glaucoma, Allyson Hindle, Robrecht Thoonen, Jessica V. Jasien, Robert M. H. Grange, Krishna Amin, Jasen Wise, Mineo Ozaki, Robert Ritch, Rajeev Malhotra, Emmanuel S. Buys Jan 2019

Identification Of Candidate Mirna Biomarkers For Glaucoma, Allyson Hindle, Robrecht Thoonen, Jessica V. Jasien, Robert M. H. Grange, Krishna Amin, Jasen Wise, Mineo Ozaki, Robert Ritch, Rajeev Malhotra, Emmanuel S. Buys

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Purpose: Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, often remains undetected until irreversible vision loss has occurred. Treatments focus on lowering intraocular pressure (IOP), the only modifiable and readily measurable risk factor. However, IOP can vary and does not always predict disease progression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are promising biomarkers. They are abundant and stable in biological fluids, including plasma and aqueous humor (AqH). We aimed to identify differentially expressed miRNAs in AqH and plasma from glaucoma, exfoliation syndrome (XFS), and control subjects. Methods: Plasma and AqH from two ethnic cohorts were harvested from glaucoma or XFS (often associated with glaucoma, n …

Radical (Re)Naming Through A Tapestry Of Autoethographic Voices: Finding Healing Through Dis/Ability Theorizing, Kelly Vaughan, David I. Hernandez-Saca, Jamie Buffington-Adams, Mercedes Cannon, Sandra Vanderbilt, Ann G. Winfield

Education Faculty Publications

In this article, we engaged in a multi-layered collective autoethnography about disability, ableism, and identity within the context of schools and society by exploring the relationship between Curriculum Studies and Dis/ability Studies in Education. While excerpts of our individual narratives are embedded in the article, our final piece weaves together our individual reflections to illustrate that there is no single experience of dis/ability; however, there are themes about dis/ability and resistance to ableism that can be gleaned from hearing a multiplicity of voices within a context of intersectionality for radical individual, social and (inter)disciplinary transformation.

Sparc Produced By Bone-Marrow Derived Cells Contributes To Myocardial Fibrosis, Hannah Jeanne Riley Jan 2019

Sparc Produced By Bone-Marrow Derived Cells Contributes To Myocardial Fibrosis, Hannah Jeanne Riley

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is commonly associated with individuals with hypertension. Increases in myocardial hemodynamic load are recapitulated in murine models of pressure overload (PO) induced by trans-aortic constriction (TAC). In both human and TAC hearts, increases in fibrosis are demonstrated and align with increases in myocardial stiffness, a hallmark of diastolic dysfunction in HFpEF. Previous studies indicated that the matricellular protein secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) was essential for the development of cardiac fibrosis in TAC hearts, however the …
