Learning Journey As An Educator Ethnography, Seleni Alcantar Jan 2019

Learning Journey As An Educator Ethnography, Seleni Alcantar

CGU Theses & Dissertations

What makes an effective teacher? This is the question I have tried to answer as I developed this ethnographic narrative. What is written here for you to read is an outline of what my experiences have been for the past two years, although it could have been my first year of teaching, but because I set back in the program, I will talk about both my first and second year of teaching. It traces back to the early expectations and hopes to more complex understandings of my students and myself. It has been 19 months since I started writing my …

A Geocritical Approach To Coloniality And Aesthetics: Mapping The Spatial Narratives Of The Amazon Basin, Michael Wang Jan 2019

A Geocritical Approach To Coloniality And Aesthetics: Mapping The Spatial Narratives Of The Amazon Basin, Michael Wang

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Coloniality, or the living legacies and practices of the 500 years of European colonization, has produced racial, political, and cultural hierarchies around the colonial difference dividing East from West, center from periphery, civilization from the Global South. This dissertation examines a particular strand of coloniality in the Western narration and aesthetics of the Amazon basin, particularly the consequences of travel writing, science fiction and cinema of Amazon’s tropicality and its enduring effects on spatial cartography. In addressing Western representations of the jungle terrain, this paper focuses on the dichotomous relationship between the metropolitan center and the colonial outer-periphery exemplified by …

What Contributes To Well-Being In Later Life? How Two Life-Span Perspectives Explain The Process, Yeojin Rho Jan 2019

What Contributes To Well-Being In Later Life? How Two Life-Span Perspectives Explain The Process, Yeojin Rho

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Goals influence the direction of life. Because of this, goals play major roles in our motivations, behaviors, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2015). Thus, it has been one of the important topics in developmental psychology to study how goals are formed and changed over the life-span. Selection, optimization, and compensation (SOC) theory and socioemotional selectivity theory (SST) explain goal changes throughout life. Although these theories focus on different factors that led to goal changes and on different aspects of goals, both theories assert that people can achieve their goals, be satisfied with their life, and finally experience successful …

The Role Of Cognitive Dissonance In Fin De Siècle Jamesian Narratives, Mona Moin Syed Jan 2019

The Role Of Cognitive Dissonance In Fin De Siècle Jamesian Narratives, Mona Moin Syed

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Henry James once described emergent self—awareness of individual consciousness as an “illimitable power” that enables personal survival within a world that is, by default, unpredictable and volatile. Subsequent analyses of narrative subtleties and character evolution in James’s major works of fiction have often been considered through constructs of psychological realism. One particular aspect of the majority of early Jamesian criticism highlights the connections between stringent Victorian social mores and contemporaneously shifting perceptions of life in England toward the end of the 19th century. In the decades that followed, correlations between the Jamesian narrative and psychoanalytical theory became more prominent within …

Prediction Of The Outcome In Cardiac Arrest Patients Undergoing Hypothermia Using Eeg Wavelet Entropy, Hana Moshirvaziri Jan 2019

Prediction Of The Outcome In Cardiac Arrest Patients Undergoing Hypothermia Using Eeg Wavelet Entropy, Hana Moshirvaziri

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Cardiac arrest (CA) is the leading cause of death in the United States. Induction of hypothermia has been found to improve the functional recovery of CA patients after resuscitation. However, there is no clear guideline for the clinicians yet to determine the prognosis of the CA when patients are treated with hypothermia. The present work aimed at the development of a prognostic marker for the CA patients undergoing hypothermia. A quantitative measure of the complexity of Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, called wavelet sub-band entropy, was employed to predict the patients’ outcomes. We hypothesized that the EEG signals of the patients who …

Fifty Years Of Cave Arthropod Sampling: Techniques And Best Practices, J. Judson Wynne, Francis G. Howarth, Stefan Sommer Jan 2019

Fifty Years Of Cave Arthropod Sampling: Techniques And Best Practices, J. Judson Wynne, Francis G. Howarth, Stefan Sommer

KIP Articles

Ever-increasing human pressures on cave biodiversity have amplified the need for systematic, repeatable, and intensive surveys of cave-dwelling arthropods to formulate evidence-based management decisions. We examined 110 papers (from 1967 to 2018) to: (i) understand how cave-dwelling invertebrates have been sampled; (ii) provide a summary of techniques most commonly applied and appropriateness of these techniques, and; (iii) make recommendations for sampling design improvement. Of the studies reviewed, over half (56) were biological inventories, 43 ecologically focused, seven were techniques papers, and four were conservation studies. Nearly one-half (48) of the papers applied systematic techniques. Few papers (24) provided enough information …

A Mechanistic Study Of The Teratogenic Potential Of 4-O-Methylhonokiol (Mh) On Japanese Medaka (Oryzias Latipes), Santu Kumar Singha Jan 2019

A Mechanistic Study Of The Teratogenic Potential Of 4-O-Methylhonokiol (Mh) On Japanese Medaka (Oryzias Latipes), Santu Kumar Singha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An additional goal of this project was to characterize the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway to unravel the adverse potential of MH on the cardiovascular system (CVS). Our study suggested that MH-mediated cardiovascular injury may be caused due to upregulation of some major components of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway through expression of excessive pro-inflammatory mediators. Moreover MH decreased expression of ErbB3 and NRG-2 suggesting impaired cardiac structure. MH exposure caused a slow heartbeat blood occlusion absence of blood circulation decreased hatching efficiency and increased mortality in medaka embryos in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. MH might cause blood vessel occlusion by increasing the …

Examining The Role Of Reproductive Interference In The Decline Of Native Green Treefrogs Following Cuban Treefrog Invasions, Joseph Kennedy Jan 2019

Examining The Role Of Reproductive Interference In The Decline Of Native Green Treefrogs Following Cuban Treefrog Invasions, Joseph Kennedy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reproductive interference occurs when the mating behaviors of one species negatively impact the fitness of another species. It is of increasing interest in invasive species biology because the introduction of alien species often leads to novel sexual interactions with native taxa, which can contribute to their decline. I examined whether reproductive interference plays a role in the decline of native green treefrogs (Hyla cinerea) following invasions of Cuban treefrogs (Osteopilus septentrionalis) in the southeastern United States. The impetus for this study revolves around similarities in spectro-temporal features of Cuban treefrog courtship calls and green treefrog aggressive calls. The significance of …

In chapter two, the phytochemical investigation of A. linearis resulted in the isolation and characterization of 14 phenolic compounds. Safety assessment of the phytochemicals through interaction with CYP, PXR, and P gp was conducted. The …

Identifying Transcription Co-Regulators Of Gcm/Repo In The Development Of Glia In Drosophila Melanogaster, Glendin Kostantinos Pano Jan 2019

Identifying Transcription Co-Regulators Of Gcm/Repo In The Development Of Glia In Drosophila Melanogaster, Glendin Kostantinos Pano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The molecular mechanism mediating the differentiation of neural progenitors to either glia or neurons is guided by the gene glial cells missing (gcm), a master regulator of glial cell differentiation. Knockout of this transcription factor (TF) and its homolog gcm2 in the fruit fly Drosophila Melanogaster results in embryos that develop neurons in place of lateral glia. Conversely, overexpression of gcm in those neural progenitors results in embryos that have substantially fewer neurons and excess glia(Jones, et.al, 1995; Hosoya, et.al, 1995; and Vincent, et.al, 1996). Additionally, gcm has also been shown to be involved in the differentiation of blood …

Student Motivation To Learn: Is Self-Belief The Key To Transition And First Year Performance In An Undergraduate Health Professions Program?, Susan Edgar, Sandra E. Carr, Joanne Connaughton, Antonio Celenza

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Student motivation to learn has been undervalued to date though has been identified as an area influencing student success and retention at university. The transition into university has been highlighted as a key period affecting student outcomes as well as well-being. Early identification of those students at risk may assist the transition for many students moving into higher education. Previous research has identified the Motivation and Engagement Scale – University/College (MES-UC) as a valid instrument for measuring motivation to learn in physiotherapy students. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between a student’s motivation to learn …

Resting State Coupling Between The Amygdala And Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Is Related To Household Income In Childhood And Indexes Future Psychological Vulnerability To Stress, Jamie L. Hanson, Dustin Albert, Ann T. Skinner, Shutian H. Shen, Kenneth A. Dodge, Jennifer E. Lansford

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

While child poverty is a significant risk factor for poor mental health, the developmental pathways involved with these associations are poorly understood. To advance knowledge about these important linkages, the present study examined the developmental sequelae of childhood exposure to poverty in a multiyear longitudinal study. Here, we focused on exposure to poverty, neurobiological circuitry connected to emotion dysregulation, later exposure to stressful life events, and symptoms of psychopathology. We grounded our work in a biopsychosocial perspective, with a specific interest in “stress sensitization” and emotion dysregulation. Motivated by past work, we first tested whether exposure to poverty was related …

Sex- And Stress-Dependent Effects On Dendritic Morphology And Spine Densities In Putative Orexin Neurons, Laura A. Grafe, Eric Geng, Brian Corbett, Kimberly Urban, Seema Bhatnagar Jan 2019

Sex- And Stress-Dependent Effects On Dendritic Morphology And Spine Densities In Putative Orexin Neurons, Laura A. Grafe, Eric Geng, Brian Corbett, Kimberly Urban, Seema Bhatnagar

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

We recently found that non-stressed female rats have higher basal prepro-orexin expression and activation of orexinergic neurons compared to non-stressed males, which lead to impaired habituation to repeated restraint stress at the behavioral, neural, and endocrine level. Here, we extended our study of sex differences in the orexin system by examining spine densities and dendritic morphology in putative orexin neurons in adult male and female rats that were exposed to 5 consecutive days of 30-min restraint. Analysis of spine distribution and density indicated that putative orexinergic neurons in control non-stressed females had significantly more dendritic spines than those in control …

Feature Extraction Using Spiking Convolutional Neural Networks, Ruthvik Vaila, John Chiasson, Vishal Saxena

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Spiking neural networks are biologically plausible counterparts of the artificial neural networks, artificial neural networks are usually trained with stochastic gradient descent and spiking neural networks are trained with spike timing dependant plasticity. Training deep convolutional neural networks is a memory and power intensive job. Spiking networks could potentially help in reducing the power usage. There is a large pool of tools for one to chose to train artificial neural networks of any size, on the other hand all the available tools to simulate spiking neural networks are geared towards computational neuroscience applications and they are not suitable for real …
