Polanyi, Broudy And Teacher Preparation, Timothy L. Simpson Jan 2019

Polanyi, Broudy And Teacher Preparation, Timothy L. Simpson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

To demonstrate the power and scope of Polanyi’s thought, this paper will establish the importance of Polanyi’s abundant insight for the accreditation of educator preparation programs in higher education. This inquiry will begin with a brief summary of the role and purpose of accreditation of educator preparation programs, highlighting the positivist presuppositions driving the current assessment process. With the aid of Harry Broudy, a close student of Polanyi, the essay will identify the implications of those presuppositions for educator preparation programs. Broudy’s analysis suggests that, despite claims to the contrary, the current assessment process fails to produce a professional teacher. …

Developing Leadless Heart Rate Monitoring Technique In Elasmobranchs, Madison Weaver Jan 2019

Developing Leadless Heart Rate Monitoring Technique In Elasmobranchs, Madison Weaver

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study was to successfully obtain a reliable method of measuring the heart rate of elasmobranchs that is noninvasive and eliminates confounding factors common in present heart rate monitoring techniques. DST-centi HRT loggers have successfully recorded heart rate without the use of leads in bony fish, but elasmobranch trials have not been successful. Implanting high amplitude DST-centi HRT loggers, in combination with DSTcenti ACT loggers, into the abdominal cavity of a member of Chiloscyllium plagiosum, the whitespotted bamboo shark, allowed for a reliable heart rate measurement to be made in one subject (N = 4), yielding a …

“¿Eres Tú, Antígona?”: Intertextuality And Representations Of Authoritarianism In Two 20th Century Retellings Of Antigone, Ari A. Plymale Jan 2019

“¿Eres Tú, Antígona?”: Intertextuality And Representations Of Authoritarianism In Two 20th Century Retellings Of Antigone, Ari A. Plymale

Theses & ETDs

This thesis aims to look at two 20th century retellings of Antigone by Sophokles, and how they use the framework of this ancient text as a means through which to discuss modern authoritarianism in the post-war era. This analysis includes an examination of Bertolt Brecht’s Die Antigone des Sophokles and José Bergamín’s La sangre de Antígona in relationship to their intertextual relationships (with Sophokles and other source texts) and the cultural-historical moment out of which each work was created. This thesis also includes a translation of the two prologues of Die Antigone des Sophokles that Brecht wrote, and a full …

Orgasm Beyond Genitals: A Critical Study Of The Gender Orgasm Gap, Roni Wiener Jan 2019

Orgasm Beyond Genitals: A Critical Study Of The Gender Orgasm Gap, Roni Wiener

Theses & ETDs

Women experience orgasm less frequently than men, a phenomenon known as the gender orgasm gap. Social explanations for this gap connect it to cultural norms that privilege men’s pleasure and preferences. In this thesis, I employ practices from Critical Sexuality Studies to consider how narrow definitions of sex contribute to orgasm disparities. I destabilize heteronormative ideals by centering experiences of orgasm with no genital stimulation (orgasm WNGS). I conducted a quantitative study of orgasm frequencies using an anonymous online survey with a convenience and snowball sample. Participants (N = 388) were between the ages of 18 and 71 (M = …

Comparative Analysis Of Charge Distributions In Homologous Thermophilic And Mesophilic Proteins, Connor Galvin Jan 2019

Comparative Analysis Of Charge Distributions In Homologous Thermophilic And Mesophilic Proteins, Connor Galvin

Theses & ETDs

Previous comparative analyses of homologous thermophilic and mesophilic proteins have consistently shown increased numbers of charged amino acids and ion pairing interactions within the thermophilic structures. While the electrostatic energies of thermophilic proteins have been shown to be more favorable than those of mesophiles, the physical determinants for this enhanced stabilizing effect have remained unclear. In order to address this problem, we compared ten features of the charge distributions in high quality crystal structures of 104 thermophilic and 118 mesophilic subunits from 90 different protein families. Substantial differences were found for eight of the features investigated, including several that have …

An Evaluation Of Elasmobranch Abundance, Diversity, And Habitat Utilization In Manatee River, Florida, Mauryn Brownback Jan 2019

An Evaluation Of Elasmobranch Abundance, Diversity, And Habitat Utilization In Manatee River, Florida, Mauryn Brownback

Theses & ETDs

In this study longline and gillnet fish survey methods were used to survey elasmobranch diversity, abundance, and habitat utilization in the estuarine portion of the Manatee River, Florida. Collecting data on these species is important to conservation, regulation, and management of areas determined to be essential. Essential Fish Habitat is commonly used to define important areas for species, but it is often too broad to enforce effective conservation strategies. One way to determine more crucial habitat is to characterize an area as nursery habitat with three guidelines stated by Heupel et al. (2007). A total of six shark and three …

Dance For Parkinson’S, Ryan Smith Jan 2019

Dance For Parkinson’S, Ryan Smith

Theses & ETDs

This thesis offers a qualitative analysis of dance classes intended for individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Through field research and semi-structured interviews with participants, carers, and instructors, I aimed to address the question, how can dance class help people negotiate changes in functioning caused by Parkinson’s Disease? I synthesize literature which suggests that dance may be a particularly beneficial activity for people living with PD, and argue that the dance for Parkinson’s model most significantly benefits the lives of participants through the contribution of an accessible dance culture.

“Queer Is The Best Word For It”: Exploring Preference For And Interactional Processes Of ‘Queer’ Identity, Jason D'Amoururs Jan 2019

“Queer Is The Best Word For It”: Exploring Preference For And Interactional Processes Of ‘Queer’ Identity, Jason D'Amoururs

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this study is to explore how the identity label ‘queer’ serves queer people, and what interactional processes of identity communication look like given such an allencompassing identity term. Through in-depth interviews with eight queer individuals ages 18-25 residing throughout Florida’s Tampa Bay Area, three themes emerged from the data: 1) Participants claimed queer to acknowledge their range of attraction, to account for previous life experience, and to connect them to a community of other queer people. 2) Participants wished to navigate everyday life as a queer person, so as not to hide important aspects of the self, …

Taking Off The Mask: Superheroism And Identity, Rachel Reimer Jan 2019

Taking Off The Mask: Superheroism And Identity, Rachel Reimer

Theses & ETDs

Since the invention of Superman in 1939, comic books have majorly influenced and have been influenced by the moral ideals of social and political movements. This study is designed to better understand the psychological impact of superheroes on the avid consumer via two routes. Through the theoretical lens of parasocial interaction, superheroes are viewed as a partner within a one-sided social exchange. Alternatively, the theory of identification depicts superheroes as a model for emulation. Using a survey method, participants were asked a series of questions regarding both parasocial and identification behaviors with superhero characters, as well as demographics information and …

Water With Standing: A Comparative Analysis Of The Legal Personalities Of Lake Erie And Te Awa Tupua, Devin Johnson Hogan Jan 2019

Water With Standing: A Comparative Analysis Of The Legal Personalities Of Lake Erie And Te Awa Tupua, Devin Johnson Hogan

Theses & ETDs

Human survival is dependent on a functioning environment to support our basic requirements of life. The estimated value of Earth’s ecosystem services is $125 trillion annually, but consistent degradation is limiting the ability of the environment to perform ecosystem services. The significant environmental impacts of human activity necessitate a new approach to environmental law, in which nature is granted basic rights to exist without pollution or destruction. The Rights of Nature movement calls for a shift in the relationship between ecology and law that acknowledges the interdependence of human and natural communities. In 2017, New Zealand passed the Te Awa …

Attention And Autonomic Function: The Relationship Between Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome And Adhd, Margaret Joan Owens

Theses & ETDs

Cognitive impairment is one of the most common symptoms of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and frequently one of the more disabling ones as well. The symptoms of cognitive dysfunction found in POTS patients tends to be remarkably similar to those found in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Little to no research has investigated the role of attentional difficulties in POTS patients, let alone rates of ADHD diagnosis. This study investigates ADHD diagnosis prevalence in adult POTS patients, as well as prevalence of Inattentive, Hyperactive, and Sensory Processing symptoms. A survey was conducted of 146 POTS patients via SurveyMonkey. The results …

The Scientific Method In The Formulation Of Physics, Jasper Fay Jan 2019

The Scientific Method In The Formulation Of Physics, Jasper Fay

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an inquiry into the Scientific Method, as it has been employed in the historical development of physics. The goals are to determine the course followed by physics as a science in the discovery and formulation of its theories, to identify the methodological principles and philosophical precepts at work in its evolution from ancient to modern times, and to present the theoretic history of this particular science, in such a way that the general scientific method is embodied in the exhibition. My strategy consists in examining primary sources—i.e. works of natural philosophy by scientists who therein contributed to …

Exploration Of Molecular Basis For Rebound Weight Gain In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Sarah Nosacka Jan 2019

Exploration Of Molecular Basis For Rebound Weight Gain In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Sarah Nosacka

Theses & ETDs

In the midst of the obesity epidemic, a broad understanding of metabolic conditions is necessary for proper care of obese and overweight individuals. Rebound weight gain, that which follows a period of significant weight loss, is an adaptive symptom which minimizes the utility of caloric deficit as a long-term treatment of obesity. Rebound weight gain is documented in humans and mice, and mice have been found with increased levels of a fat-synthesis gene, acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC, pod- 2), in response to starvation and refeeding. In the present study, the model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans, was age-matched with hypochlorite treatment, starved …

Investigating The Effects Of Fructose, Stevia, And Aspartame On The Lifespan And Body Fat Content Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kara Grissom Jan 2019

Investigating The Effects Of Fructose, Stevia, And Aspartame On The Lifespan And Body Fat Content Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Kara Grissom

Theses & ETDs

The consumption of sugar has increased greatly over the last few decades, and is correlated with obesity and several major diseases. While fructose is a natural sugar, it is the main component in high fructose corn syrup which has been targeted as an offender in the obesity epidemic in recent years. Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, has over 100 studies that support its safety however its efficacy in use for diabetics is still questioned. Stevia is a relatively new sweetener that comes from a plant in the form of steviol glycosides, however the leaf and crude extract safety have not been …

Testing The Effects Of Communication On The Training Process Of Neural Networks In Multiagent Coordination Using Neuroevolution Of Augmenting Topologies, Maxwell Miller Jan 2019

Testing The Effects Of Communication On The Training Process Of Neural Networks In Multiagent Coordination Using Neuroevolution Of Augmenting Topologies, Maxwell Miller

Theses & ETDs

Communication is one variable of many in the implementation of artificial neural networks. This thesis explores the effects of adding communication to multiagent systems where each agent is an artificial neural network. We compare the performance of multiagent systems with full communication to the performance of multiagent systems with no communication to the performance of multiagent systems with one channel of communication. We measure the performance of each system using a simulation based off of real world objects where each of three small robots is an agent. The goal of these agents is to push a box over to a …

The United Fissure: Temporality And Projection In The Poetics Of Robert Creeley And Charles Olson, Jacquelyn Grace Harrison Jan 2019

The United Fissure: Temporality And Projection In The Poetics Of Robert Creeley And Charles Olson, Jacquelyn Grace Harrison

Theses & ETDs

As poets and as figures in the literary community, Charles Olson and Robert Creeley greatly influenced the trajectory of technical and stylistic development of the mid-20th century. Olson’s pamphlet Projective Verse is widely referenced by poets as means of evaluating and developing their work, and Creeley’s sentiment about content as an extension of form has become pervasive in the field. This study approaches these figures through the temporal lens and attempts to locate the extents to which each poet is in temporal motion or evading it. Although the conclusion is that neither poet fully occupies either a temporal or atemporal …

“This Is Who We Are, This Is Who I Am” Exploring Queerness In Cartoons Through Steven Universe, Roxanne Seraphina Kennedy Jan 2019

“This Is Who We Are, This Is Who I Am” Exploring Queerness In Cartoons Through Steven Universe, Roxanne Seraphina Kennedy

Theses & ETDs

Cartoons offer significant teaching opportunities in the way they discuss and normalize identities. This thesis examines queer gender and sexual content in cartoons as examples of the power of positive representation, specifically looking at Cartoon Network’s popular animated series Steven Universe. Over the last several decades, cartoons as a genre have gone through notable thematic shifts in order to address public awareness of gender and sexuality. Contemporary animation is currently seeing a queer renaissance, where shows explicitly discuss and represent LGBTQ+ identities in their stories. In order to better understand how Steven Universe accomplishes this, I focus on the ways …

Non-Conformative Gender Expression In Manga, Visual Arts, And Fashion In Modern Japan, Hannah Oberlin Jan 2019

Non-Conformative Gender Expression In Manga, Visual Arts, And Fashion In Modern Japan, Hannah Oberlin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis will explore how gender non-conforming individuals in Japan live their lives through means of opposition to societal expectations and desire for the removal of (gendered) constraints. Through the lenses of Japanese manga, visual arts, and fashion, I will examine the history of Japan’s gender roles, how the country as a whole has been affected by gendered power dynamics, and what the current social environment is for people who do not conform to modern expectations of what gender should and should not look like. Therefore, this study will yield new understandings of how gender is conceived of in Japan, …

Dismantling Digital First: An Ethnographic Study Of The Importance Of Community Engagement For Local Publications, Michala Anne Head Jan 2019

Dismantling Digital First: An Ethnographic Study Of The Importance Of Community Engagement For Local Publications, Michala Anne Head

Theses & ETDs

The objective of this thesis was to provide a comprehensive look at local media and journalism trends in 2018 through ethnographic study of a local, lifestyle magazine. With the Internet came the new ability to communicate directly with others online. This disrupted multiple streams of revenue for traditional print publications, as this development rendered classified postings and print advertising obsolete. The circulation of information online also unfathomably increased competition for the attention of readers. My thesis research used ethnographic methods to produce qualitative findings on the strategies employed by SRQ , a local publication in Sarasota, Florida, to stay afloat …

Cauliflower Communities: A Comparative Analysis Of Bacterial Endophytes Within Differentiating Tissues Of Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis, Hanah Chaudry Jan 2019

Cauliflower Communities: A Comparative Analysis Of Bacterial Endophytes Within Differentiating Tissues Of Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis, Hanah Chaudry

Theses & ETDs

Fungal and bacterial endophytes live within the tissue of every plant and are beneficial to their hosts in many ways. Endophytic presence can affect plant morphology, metabolism and gene expression leading to advantages like increased abiotic stress tolerance, disease resistance and pest deterrence. Endophytic communities, which are thought to have evolved from Rhizosphere bacteria, have differing compositions in different tissues (Card et al. , 2015, (Liu et al., 2013) ). However, the development of this diversity is not well studied. The curd of cauliflower ( Brassica oleracea var. Botrytis), was used for tissue culturing because of its ability to differentiate …

“Our Father, Our King”: The Creators Of Artificial Life In Novels Featuring Artificial Intelligence, Golems, And Frankenstein’S Creature, Emily Mulholland Jan 2019

“Our Father, Our King”: The Creators Of Artificial Life In Novels Featuring Artificial Intelligence, Golems, And Frankenstein’S Creature, Emily Mulholland

Theses & ETDs

In my thesis I explore the artificial creation of life in literature through novels featuring golems, artificial intelligence, and the Creature of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I trace these figures through The Golem and the Wondrous Deeds of the Maharal of Prague by Yudl Rosenberg, The Puttermesser Papers by Cynthia Ozick, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and He, She, and It by Marge Piercy. I explore the relationship between a human Creator and their nonhuman Creation in each text. This raises religious questions of origins, as well as ethical questions regarding how humanity is defined. I argue that the assumption of the …

Comparative Effects Of Acute Low And High-Toxin Red Tide (Karenia Brevis Wilson) Exposure On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin) Feeding Response, Daniel Collins Niedospial Jan 2019

Comparative Effects Of Acute Low And High-Toxin Red Tide (Karenia Brevis Wilson) Exposure On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin) Feeding Response, Daniel Collins Niedospial

Theses & ETDs

Red Tide causes extensive ecological and economic damage through massive marine deaths, water quality shifts and human illness. A contributor to the health of coastal ecosystems and economies, it’s important to understand how the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin) responds to red tide and its toxins. Studies on the chronic effects of Karenia brevis exposure on bivalve mollusks are increasing, but few have explored its short-term effects on Eastern Oyster feeding response. In this study, Eastern Oysters were fed Tetraselmis impellucida and Isochrysis galbana, starved for 48 hours, and exposed to Karenia brevis Low-Toxin and High-Toxin Wilson in a static …

Analysis Of The Effect Of Capillary Diameter On The Desolvation Of Proteins Using Esi-Ms, Tyler Gonzalez Jan 2019

Analysis Of The Effect Of Capillary Diameter On The Desolvation Of Proteins Using Esi-Ms, Tyler Gonzalez

Theses & ETDs

In the past decade, advances in protein analysis techniques have opened up new avenues of study for proteins that previously proved extremely difficult or time consuming to analyze with traditional x-ray crystallography. From improvements to NMR spectroscopy that allows the analysis of small proteins to the creation of cryo-EM that uses electron microscopy techniques to image proteins, there are more techniques to analyze proteins then before. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is one of those techniques and allows for charged proteins to be introduced to the gas phase with minimal disruption to their native conformations, and their masses determined. While …

Epistemic Injustices Of Economics And Their Effects On Economic Theory, Kaylie J. Mccarthy Jan 2019

Epistemic Injustices Of Economics And Their Effects On Economic Theory, Kaylie J. Mccarthy

Theses & ETDs

Economic knowledge is communally created. Since its beginning, the creation of knowledge in economics has been exclusionary of both women as epistemic agents and women as economic actors. The chronic hermeneutical marginalization of women from economic theory has resulted in epistemic injustices which both impair women as knowers in economic academia and create damaging “gaps” of knowledge in the truth-seeking process of economic theory and methodology. This in turn, strips women of the hermeneutical tools to understand and effectively communicate their lived economic reality to those knowers outside of their social position. Further, these epistemic injustices also disproportionately harms women’s …
