Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a good summative measure of the body’s ability to perform continuous, rhythmic, dynamic, large-muscle group physical activity, and exercise. In children, CRF is meaningfully associated with health, independent of physical activity levels, and it is an important determinant of sports and athletic performance. Although gas-analyzed peak oxygen uptake is the criterion physiological measure of children’s CRF, it is not practical for population-based testing. Field testing offers a simple, cheap, practical alternative to gas analysis. The 20-m shuttle run test (20mSRT)—a progressive aerobic exercise test involving continuous running between 2 lines 20 m apart in time to …

Racial Bias In Post-Arrest And Pretrial Decision Making: The Problem And A Solution, Joseph J. Avery, Joel Cooper
Racial Bias In Post-Arrest And Pretrial Decision Making: The Problem And A Solution, Joseph J. Avery, Joel Cooper
Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy
There is significant racial disparity in U.S. incarceration rates, with African Americans vastly overrepresented. Given that almost all criminal cases resolve through plea bargaining, a process that takes place between the poles of arrest and trial, if progress concerning racial disparity in incarceration rates is to be made, greater understanding of the post-arrest and pretrial (PAPT) period is necessary. What do we know about racial bias in PAPT decision making, and what can the psychology of prejudice teach us about it?
In this Article, we map the factors that are liable to lead individuals to disparate treatment decisions, and we …

Parent Couples’ Participation In Speech-Language Therapy For School-Age Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In The United States, Michelle Flippin, Debbie L. Hahs-Vaughn
Communicative Disorders Faculty Publications
This study examined parent couples’ participation in and satisfaction with speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States. Responses from 40 father–mother couples (n = 80 parents) were examined across therapy components (i.e. parent–therapist communication, assessment, planning, and intervention). Descriptive frequencies, chi-square tests, intraclass correlations, and dyadic multilevel modeling were used to examine participation across fathers and mothers and within parent couples. Compared to mothers, fathers communicated less with therapists and participated less in assessment and planning. Fathers also had lower satisfaction than mothers with parent–therapist communication and planning. Although few parents participated in …

Increasing evidence supports the beneficial effects of polyphenol-rich diets, including the traditional Mediterranean diet, for the management of cardiovascular disease, obesity and neurodegenerative diseases. However, a common concern when discussing the protective effects of polyphenol-rich diets against diseases is whether these compounds are present in systemic circulation in their intact/parent forms in order to exert their beneficial effects in vivo. Here, we explore two common classes of dietary polyphenols, namely isoflavones and lignans, and their gut microbial-derived metabolites for gut and blood–brain barrier predicted permeability, as well as protection against neuroinflammatory stimuli in murine BV-2 microglia. Polyphenol microbial metabolites (PMMs) …
Predicting The Structure And Selectivity Of Coiled-Coil Proteins, Mojtaba Jokar
Predicting The Structure And Selectivity Of Coiled-Coil Proteins, Mojtaba Jokar
Wayne State University Dissertations
A coiled-coil protein structure consists of two (in coiled-coil dimers) or more interacting α-helical strands that together form a left-handed supercoil structure. Many coiled-coil proteins are involved in significant biological functions such as the regulation of gene expression, known as transcription factors. Also coiled-coil structures entail unique mechanical properties critical to the function and integrity of various motor proteins, cytoskeletal filaments and extra-cellular matrix proteins. Engineering these transcription factors is also expected to create more efficient and practical solutions to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and prion …
Caesarean Birth In A Social Context: A Content Analysis Of Childbirth Narratives, Marissa Cobuzio
Caesarean Birth In A Social Context: A Content Analysis Of Childbirth Narratives, Marissa Cobuzio
Honors Program Theses
Childbirth is a shared life experience among a majority of women and is both biological and social in nature. This paper explores the stories women hearing about birth by looking at the language, themes, messages which surround the public discussions of C-section. Using sociological theories of child birth and historical context, this paper answers the question: What are the language, themes, messages used in popular media, such as parenting magazines and “mommy blogs” and how do they characterize caesarean births for women? To answer this questions, a content analysis of two parent blogs was conducted to identify the themes and …
Gender And Singing In The American Classroom, Amanda Franklin
Gender And Singing In The American Classroom, Amanda Franklin
Honors Program Theses
This thesis was written to uncover the history of gender and choral singing, draw connections between gender and music, analyze current student perspectives regarding singing in the American classroom, and offer suggestions for educators in present-day chorus classes. This thesis is most relevant for music educators who seek a more-gender balanced program, but the implications of this research can be applied to gender in education as a whole.

The Art Of Caring: Increasing Empathy Through Conversation, Joy Harlynking
Honors Program Theses
In our every day lives we use empathy more than we would assume, however a current empathy deficit has led us to wonder how we can increase our empathy. The present study aimed to find a way to increase one’s empathy, specifically through an emotional conversation with another individual. There were 61 participants who were separated into either an emotional or factual conversation group. They first took surveys including the IRI, closeness questions, and the pre Revised Eyes Test and then engaged in conversation with another participant. They then took a post Revised Eyes Test after their conversation. The results …

A gathering of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) higher education stakeholders met in November 2018 to consider the relationship between innovation in education and assessment. When we talk about assessment in higher education, it is inextricably linked to both evaluation and accreditation, so all three were considered. The first question we asked was can we build a nation of learners? This starts with considering the student, first and foremost. As educators, this is a foundation of our exploration and makes our values transparent. As educators, how do we know we are having an impact? As members and implementers of …

Ecopedagogy: Learning How To Participate In Ecological Consciousness, Peterson, Eric
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
This paper is the result of an inquiry into ecological consciousness through a participatory paradigm. The dialectical relationship between institutionalized education and consciousness is central to this inquiry’s focus. This exploration into ecological consciousness has lead to the following question: How can institutionalized education be designed, delivered, and experienced in a way that nurtures ecological intelligence, ecological consciousness, and more importantly, ecological activism? The ‘sense of self ‘is a central theme within the paper, and led to the conception of intraearthal and interearthal relationships as a way of communicating our need to identify as being in Earth. The author utilizes …
Air Quality And Asthma Hospitalization: Evidence Of Pm2.5 Concentrations In Pennsylvania Counties, Elham Erfanian, Alan R. Collins
Air Quality And Asthma Hospitalization: Evidence Of Pm2.5 Concentrations In Pennsylvania Counties, Elham Erfanian, Alan R. Collins
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
According to the World Health Organization, 235 million people around the world currently suffer from asthma, which includes approximately 25 million in the United States. There is substantial epidemiological evidence indicating linkages between outdoor air pollution and asthma symptoms, more specifically between concentrations of particulate matter and asthma. Using county level data for 2001-2014, a spatial panel framework is imposed based upon prevailing wind patterns to investigate the direct and indirect impacts of PM2.5 concentration levels on asthma hospitalization in Pennsylvania. This model controls for population density, precipitation, smoking rate, and population demographic variables. Results show that PM2.5 concentrations as …

Ignatian Intent: Using Ignatian Pedagogy For Sustainability In The Sociology Classroom, Erin E. Robinson
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
In the sociology classroom, students expressed thoughts of denial of the importance of a number of social issues, including climate change. During this time, I was involved in two initiatives which were collaborative efforts to weave Ignatian Pedagogy with sustainability education. First, at Canisius College, we developed a Sustainability Initiative to embrace a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability in academics, community and campus culture. Second, I was invited to become involved with the AJCU Ecology Educators group working on the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability. Through the application of the Ignatian Pedagogy for Sustainability tool kit, I took the opportunity to …

Does In-Vitro Fertilization Increase The Risk For Birth Defects?, Tehila Tropper
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Since 1978 when the first “petri dish” baby was born, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has been used as a tool to give couples struggling with infertility the opportunity to have children. Using this method of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), the woman is given medication to stimulate her ovaries for the maturation of multiple eggs, which are then retrieved via needle aspiration, fertilized in a petri dish, and inserted in the uterus with the hopes of achieving a successful pregnancy. Many times IVF is completed with another technique known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where the sperm is injected straight into the …

Integrated Pest Management Manual For Greenhouses, Evy Z. Santiago
Integrated Pest Management Manual For Greenhouses, Evy Z. Santiago
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The original definition of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was introduced by Stern et al. in 1959 as Integrated Control. It was defined as applied pest control which combines and integrates biological and chemical control (Stern et al. 1959). Entomologists began exploring insect management alternatives to reduce reliance on insecticides in the 1950’s after resistance and pest resurgence in agriculture was first noted. Today, the European Union follows a definition of IPM largely inspired from the definition given by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (Barzman et al. 2015). Integrated Pest Management means the careful consideration of …

Furthering Entomological Outreach And Education For High School Aged Students With Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Robert G. Lefevre
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
This project was designed and conducted as an entomological educational outreach program for high school students. I was given access to an environmental science class at Kaiserslautern High School (KHS) under the guidance and supervision of a licensed teacher. Environmental Science is an elective class that fulfills the course requirement at the school for a science course with a laboratory component. I was given three groups of students, and I taught four classes to each of these groups. Each class had students in their freshman, sophomore, and junior years. During these class periods, I composed a food preference experiment that …
