Assessing The Prevalence Of Multidrug Resistant Salmonella Enterica From Stream Sediment And Poultry Litter In The Shenandoah Valley Of Virginia, Noah Greenman
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Multidrug resistant Salmonella enterica present in stream sediment and poultry litter represent a critical health concern. A small number of S. enterica serotypes are responsible for most lab-confirmed infections in the US each year. To assess the prevalence of these significant strains, we isolated 88 S. enterica from stream sediment and poultry litter. Sequence data for all isolates were generated using an Illumina® sequencing platform, with long-reads for some isolates from the Oxford Nanopore MinION™ used in a hybrid genome assembly approach. Isolates were typed according to their serotype and multi-locus sequence type using SeqSero/SISTR and Enterobase respectively. Antibiotic resistance …

The One Health Initiative: The Intersection Of Human, Animal, And Environmental Health, Mary Evelyn Pearsall
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The One Health concept is a global strategy for strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations among health care for humans, animals, and the environment. The purpose of this honors capstone project is to study the One Health Initiative and create a comprehensive thesis on what the initiative is and how it is relevant to different sectors of health. An overview of prevalent zoonotic diseases will be provided including how they are transmitted and their global relevance. Case studies on zoonotic diseases will be used in which the effectivity of a One Health approach can be analyzed. In addition, relevant sections on One Health …

The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao
The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao
Management Faculty Research
Since 2017, increased sexual harassment incidents have been reported in Hollywood; yet, little guidance has been offered on how organizations, which are informally governed by their network members, can effectively reduce sexual harassment. Building upon the theory of network governance, this paper suggests social mechanisms, which are used to coordinate and safeguard exchanges between Hollywood organizations, are more effective at reducing incidents of workplace sexual harassment than traditional strategies. These social mechanisms direct change to the macroculture through collective sanctions that damage the perpetrators reputation and restrict access to network opportunities. In essence, perpetrators become toxic assets that Hollywood avoids …

Gender Stereotypes Of Toys In Target, Gabrielle L. Branciforti
Gender Stereotypes Of Toys In Target, Gabrielle L. Branciforti
Writing Across the Curriculum
When looking in a department or toy store, it is easy to identify the separation between the boy and girl section. Children’s toys have always reflected society’s typical gender roles. That is, young girls should play with Barbie dolls, while boys play with trucks. When walking into a local Target, or old Toys-R-Us stores, one automatically walks to the socially appropriate side of the stores to buy their young child a toy. Is it because they are afraid of what others will say, because their child is playing with different toys from their peers? Or is it because society is …
Effects Of The Invasive Asian Shore Crab, Hemigrapsus Sanguineus, On New England Trophic Cascade: Diet And Predation, Madison Bradley
Effects Of The Invasive Asian Shore Crab, Hemigrapsus Sanguineus, On New England Trophic Cascade: Diet And Predation, Madison Bradley
Writing Across the Curriculum
Trophic cascades occur when the community structure is influenced by indirect effects of predation on the lower trophic levels. The trophic cascade can be disrupted when an invasive species is introduced. The Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus has invaded ecosystems in New England and we predict this invasion will negatively affect the classic New England trophic cascade. By the predation indirectly affecting lower trophic levels, H. sanguineus can influence the community structure and diversity at the lower levels. To understand the trophic cascade, we manipulated the food source and competitors in four different mini-ecosystems. By introducing H. sanguineus into an …

Learning To Write In An Academic Genre: Adult English Learners’ Use Of Sociocultural Resources, Lyudmyla Ivanyuk
Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction
In this multiple case study, I examined what types of sociocultural resources adult English learners brought with them from their previous contexts and what new resources they drew upon in the U.S. while learning to write in the essay genre. The study also identified how the participants chose to use previous and new sociocultural resources as mediated by the essay genre in the U.S. The following research foci shaped this study: (1) What types of sociocultural resources do adult English learners use while learning to write in the essay genre prior to and after their arrival in the U.S.? (2) …
Residual Next-Day Effects Of Alprazolam On Psychomotor Performance And Simulated Driving In Healthy Normal Volunteers, Marion A. Coe
Residual Next-Day Effects Of Alprazolam On Psychomotor Performance And Simulated Driving In Healthy Normal Volunteers, Marion A. Coe
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
The prevalence of drugged driving has increased in the United States, and some prescription medications (e.g., zolpidem) cause impairment after the predicted duration of therapeutic action has elapsed. The aim of this study is to determine if bedtime administration of alprazolam similarly impacts driving performance the following day.
Volunteers were 14 healthy adults (6 males) who completed a double-blind, double-dummy within-subjects design study examining the effects of alprazolam (0.5, 1, & 2mg), zolpidem (10mg), and placebo administered at bedtime on driving performance the following day. The positive control condition was alprazolam (1mg) administered on the test morning. Driving simulator measures, …
The Hermeneutics Of Policing: An Analysis Of Law And Order Technocracy, Jason Blakely
The Hermeneutics Of Policing: An Analysis Of Law And Order Technocracy, Jason Blakely
All Faculty Open Access Publications
Contemporary American policing practices are marked by increasingly top-down, racialized, militarized, and pseudo-scientific features. Social scientists have played a central role in creating this political situation: social-scientific advocates of “law and order,” far from providing a value-neutral description of social reality, appear instead to have contributed to the creation of a peculiarly modern form of power.

Differential Sensitivity Of Bees To Urbanization-Driven Changes In Body Temperature And Water Content, Justin D. Burdine, Kevin E. Mccluney
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Predicting how species will respond to climate change and land use modification is essential for conserving organisms and maintaining ecosystem services. Thermal tolerances have been shown to have strong predictive power, but the potential importance of desiccation tolerances have been less explored in some species. Here, we report measurements of thermal and desiccation tolerances and safety margins across a gradient of urbanization, for three bee species: silky striped sweat bees (Agapostemon sericeus), western honeybees (Apis mellifera), and common eastern bumblebees (Bombus impatiens). We found significant differences in thermal tolerances, measured as critical thermal maximum …
Temporal Effectiveness Of Biodiversity Surrogates In Coral Reefs In The British Virgin Islands, Nicole B. Keefner
Temporal Effectiveness Of Biodiversity Surrogates In Coral Reefs In The British Virgin Islands, Nicole B. Keefner
Open Access Master's Theses
Global biodiversity declines associated with anthropogenic stressors have motivated researchers to implement monitoring programs to estimate species richness for major taxonomic groups. Due to logistical challenges of species identification, there have been efforts to use biological and abiotic surrogates as indicators of species richness targets. An effective surrogate has two essential features: first, it takes less time, money, and experience to measure than the target and second, it maintains a consistently strong correlation with the target over space and time. Few studies, however, have explicitly investigated surrogate effectiveness over time, and those that have are typically quite short. Our main …

Cultural Tightness-Looseness: Its Nature And Missiological Applications, David R. Dunaetz
Cultural Tightness-Looseness: Its Nature And Missiological Applications, David R. Dunaetz
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The focus of much missionary work concerns sharing the gospel with others so that they may put their faith in Jesus Christ. However, members of some cultures are much more resistant to this than are members of other cultures. The concept of cultural tightness-looseness helps explain why some cultures are more closed to the gospel than are others. Tight cultures, in contrast to loose cultures, have strong social norms, violations of which are met with intense sanctions. Numerous recent studies reveal the antecedents, consequences, and the geographical distribution of cultural tightness-looseness. There are important missiological implications at the societal level, …
The Paradox Of Big Data, Gary N. Smith
The Paradox Of Big Data, Gary N. Smith
Pomona Economics
Data-mining is often used to discover patterns in Big Data. It is tempting believe that because an unearthed pattern is unusual it must be meaningful, but patterns are inevitable in Big Data and usually meaningless. The paradox of Big Data is that data mining is most seductive when there are a large number of variables, but a large number of variables exacerbates the perils of data mining.
Gender Performativity Through Traditional Dance Performance, Calder Hollond
Gender Performativity Through Traditional Dance Performance, Calder Hollond
2019 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
As a representation of nation and culture, traditional dances provide a uniquely rehearsed performance of ideal values in a certain society. Using a framework of gender performativity theory, this paper analyzes how the Argentinian tango and Soviet state-sponsored traditional dance companies perform gender in a highly intentional, highly visible manner that is reflective of how gender is perceived in those societies. A historical analysis of both nations, touching on the Bolshevik government’s relation to women and Latin American machismo, provides a background for understanding how gender is constructed in each society, while a formal analysis of dance elements such as …
