Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

With the intensive development of lignocellulosic biorefineries to produce fuels and chemicals from biomass-derived carbohydrates, lignin was generated at a large quantity every year. Therefore, lignin has received increasing attention as an abundant aromatics resource in terms of research and development efforts for value-added chemicals production. In this review, studies about lignin degradation especially the crucial enzymes involved and the reaction mechanism were substantially discussed, which provided the molecular basis of lignin biodegradation. Then, the latest improvements in lignin valorization by biological methods were summarized and case studies about value-added compounds from lignin were introduced. Afterwards, challenges, opportunities and prospects …

Lignin Valorizations With Ni Catalysts For Renewable Chemicals And Fuels Productions, Xiao Chen, Weixiang Guan, Chi-Wing Tsang, Haoquan Hu, Changhai Liang

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

Energy and fuels derived from biomass pose lesser impact on the environmental carbon footprint than those derived from fossil fuels. In order for the biomass-to-energy and biomass-to-chemicals processes to play their important role in the loop of the circular economy, highly active, selective, and stable catalysts and the related efficient chemical processes are urgently needed. Lignin is the most thermal stable fraction of biomass and a particularly important resource for the production of chemicals and fuels. This mini review mainly focuses on lignin valorizations for renewable chemicals and fuels production and summarizes the recent interest in the lignin valorization over …

Black Soldier Fly Larvae As A Sustainable Animal Feed Ingredient In Kenya, Shaphan Y. Chia Jan 2019

Black Soldier Fly Larvae As A Sustainable Animal Feed Ingredient In Kenya, Shaphan Y. Chia

All PhD Dissertations

In low-income countries where the poor rely on agriculture for livelihood, intensification of agricultural production to develop profitable and inclusive fish and livestock enterprises is one way to increase food production and reduce poverty (FAO et al., 2012). Poultry, pig and fish farming are among the fastest growing agribusinesses in Kenya, offering employment and sources of livelihood to the growing population (Bizna, 2019). The poultry sub-sector contributes about 55% to the livestock sector and accounts for about 30% of the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) of Kenya. The sub-sector employs two to three million Kenyans (Omiti & Okuthe, 2009). Pig …

Identification And Characterization Of Host Marking Pheromones In Three Ceratitis Species, Xavier Cheseto Jan 2019

Identification And Characterization Of Host Marking Pheromones In Three Ceratitis Species, Xavier Cheseto

All PhD Dissertations

Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are notorious pests of horticultural crops, causing significant economic losses especially in the tropics. The conventional approaches utilized in controlling these pests including biological and chemical methods are relatively inefficient and targets mostly males, making it imperative to identify new Integrated Pest Management (IPM) tools that are effective and economically sustainable. To boost current efforts in fruit fly control, females should also be controlled, for example through exploitation of their host marking behavior. Ovipositing females of certain fruit fly species have been established to mark their oviposition sites with a host marking pheromone (HMP), to deter …

Olfactory Preferences Of Gravid Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae), And Their Fitness Consequences, Steve Soh Bernard Baleba Jan 2019

Olfactory Preferences Of Gravid Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae), And Their Fitness Consequences, Steve Soh Bernard Baleba

All PhD Dissertations

Oviposition decisions are a prominent example of behaviour directly affecting the fitness, abundance, distribution, and population dynamics of holometabolous insects. Due to eggs being immobile and adult insects often not practicing biparental and/or maternal care, gravid females, when ovipositing, should select substrate(s) that maximise fitness of their offspring.Studies have revealed that this selection is influenced by biotic (intra and interspecific competition, parasitism, larval experience, etc…) and abiotic (olfactory cues, visuals cues, substrate physiochemical properties, etc…) factors. However, in the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae), a cosmopolitan blood-feeder that transmits several pathogens to animals, the influence of these factors in gravid …

The Aftereffects Of Tc Heartland: How To Effectively Approach Motions To Dismiss And Motions To Transfer On The Basis Of Improper Venue, Jennifer Rosenblatt Jan 2019

The Aftereffects Of Tc Heartland: How To Effectively Approach Motions To Dismiss And Motions To Transfer On The Basis Of Improper Venue, Jennifer Rosenblatt

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Prior to the Supreme Court's decision in TC Heartland, the law of venue in patent infringement actions fluctuated over time. In recent history, the Eastern District of Texas became a notoriously plaintiff-friendly forum in which to litigate patent infringement actions; it was also a widely available choice of forum due to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit's broad reading of the patent venue statute, 28 U.S.C. § 1400(b). However, the Supreme Court in TC Heartland adopted its earlier interpretation of the patent venue statute that is much narrower than subsequent interpretive expansions.

This Note surveys and categorizes motions …

Categorical Modelling Of Conscious States, Baruss, Imants Jan 2019

Categorical Modelling Of Conscious States, Baruss, Imants

CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century

In the last several decades, there has been an explosion of research concerning consciousness with some efforts at mathematical modelling. The purpose of this paper is to model conscious states using categorical constructions. In particular, this modelling captures temporality, the intentional structure of consciousness, and meaning fields, which provide the templates for occurrent events. The architecture of conscious states naturally lends itself to applications of category theory, more specifically to sheaf-like constructions in which the stacks over a site are topoi whose germs are the objects of the topoi. Each topos represents the potential experiential content of an individual where …

Are Vaccines The Key To Alzheimer’S Treatment? (2019-2020), Myia Tyler

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

In this research inquiry, Tyler uses a metacognitive style of reflection walking the reader through her personal connections to topic selection and research process before presenting what she discovered in medical journal articles on the topic of using vaccines for Alzheimer’s treatment and prevention. In closely reviewing journal articles and their findings, Tyler is able to make comments about the challenges of developing a vaccine appropriate to humans (as opposed to the mice trials she reads about,) and the complexity of high failure rates in the past. Finally, Tyler comments on the financial issues involved in this treatment plan and …

Potential applications include, but are not limited to, forecasting of weather and climate variability; prediction and monitoring of drought conditions; management and allocation of water resources; agricultural plant production and alleviation of famine; prevention of natural disasters such as wild fires, landslides, floods, and dust storms; or monitoring of ecosystem response to climate change. Because of the importance and wide-ranging applicability of highly variable spatial and temporal SM information that …

Evidence For Quantized Magnetic Flux In An Axon, Robert Melendy Jan 2019

Evidence For Quantized Magnetic Flux In An Axon, Robert Melendy

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

In December of 2018 I published my consolidated findings of a closed-form description of propagated signaling phenomena in the membrane of an axon [1]. Those results demonstrate how intracellular conductance, the thermodynamics of magnetization, and current modulation, function together in generating an action potential in a unified differential equation. At present, I report on a subsequent finding within this model. Namely, evidence of quantized magnetic flux Φ0 in an axon.

Dna Damage And Cytokine Production In Non-Target Irradiated Lymphocytes, Jane Bryant, Laura Shields, Christopher Hynes, Orla L. Howe, Brendan Mcclean, Fiona Lyng

Articles

In advanced radiotherapy, treatment of the tumor with high-intensity modulated fields is balanced with normal tissue sparing. However, the non-target dose delivered to surrounding healthy tissue within the irradiated volume is a potential cause for concern. Whether the effects observed are caused after exposure to out-of-field radiation or bystander effects through neighboring irradiated cells is not fully understood. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of exposure to out-of-field radiation in lymphocyte cell lines and primary blood cells. The role of cellular radiosensitivity in altering bystander responses in out-of-field exposed cells was also investigated. Target cells were …

There is interest in peptide drug design, especially for targeting intracellular protein–protein interactions. Therefore, the experimental validation of a computational platform for enabling peptide drug design is of interest. Here, we describe our peptide drug design platform (CMDInventus) and demonstrate its use in modeling and predicting the structural and binding aspects of diverse peptides that interact with oncology targets MDM2/MDMX in comparison to both retrospective (pre-prediction) and prospective (post-prediction) data. In the retrospective study, CMDInventus modules (CMDpeptide, CMDboltzmann, CMDescore and CMDyscore) were used to accurately reproduce structural and binding data across multiple MDM2/MDMX data sets. In the prospective study, CMDescore, …

Intranasal Delivery Of Insulin By Nanoemulsion System, Darshana Mahendrakumar Shah Jan 2019

Intranasal Delivery Of Insulin By Nanoemulsion System, Darshana Mahendrakumar Shah

Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this research was to develop an o/w nanoemulsion dosage form of insulin for intranasal delivery where insulin is loaded into the oil phase of the nanoemulsion for enhanced absorption. When loaded into the lipid droplets (oil phase), insulin can be protected from enzymatic degradation, can permeate through the mucus gel barrier in a comparatively efficient manner and can be absorbed through transcellular permeation along with paracellular route. To incorporate lipophilicity to insulin molecule, several complexes of insulin with various amphiphiles were developed to load it into the oil phase. The cytotoxicity of these amphiphiles and the …
