Interaction Of Seed Dispersal And Environmental Filtering Affects Woody Encroachment Patterns In Coastal Grassland, Natasha N. Woods, Benjamin L. Dows, Evan B. Goldstein, Laura J. Moore, Donald R. Young, Julie C. Zinnert
Biology Publications
Encroachment of woody plants into grasslands has occurred worldwide and includes coastal ecosystems. This conversion process is mediated by seed dispersal patterns, environmental filtering, and biotic interactions. As spatiotemporally heterogeneous, harsh environments, barrier islands present a unique set of challenges for dispersal and establishment. Environmental conditions act as filters on dispersed seeds, thereby influencing encroachment and distribution patterns. Seldom have patterns of propagule dispersal been considered in the context of woody encroachment. We quantified dispersal and post‐dispersal processes of an encroaching woody population of Morella cerifera relative to directional rate of encroachment and observed distribution patterns on an Atlantic coastal …

An Alternative Approach In Hospitality: Exploring The Leadership Philosophy Of A Successful Restauranteur Family, Scott Linklater, Kem Gambrell
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Hospitality in the United States has come a long way since the first recorded “inn” was established in 1607 by Spaniards in what is now modern-day Santa Fe, New Mexico (http://traveltips.usatoday.com/history-hotel-restaurantmanagement-54946.html). Since then, hotels and restaurants have popped up throughout the United States along trade routes and waterways, serving bourgeoning metropolitan centers such as New York City and locations along the Mississippi River.

Relevansi Pendekatan Posdisipliner Pada Kajian Stratejik Global Dan Revolusi Industri “3.0”, “4.0”, Akhyar Yusuf Lubis
Jurnal Kajian Stratejik Ketahanan Nasional

A Metrics-Based Assessment Of Scotland's Science Landscape (2007-2016), Başak Candemir Phd, Eleonora Palmaro
Public Reports
Elsevier was commissioned by the Scottish Science Advisory Council (SSAC), to undertake a bibliometric-based assessment of the performance of Scotland’s scientific research base to provide ministers, officials and interested stakeholders with an objective overview. Similar analysis has been conducted for the UK, Scotland and Wales separately, in the past. Of course, publication outputs relate to only one of the many facets of the research system, but they do at least give an indication of the publication performance relative to other countries.
The report tracks the performance of Scotland’s scientific research base over a ten-year period (2007-2016), analysing a number of …

Magnetic Characterization Of Iron Formations From Drill Cores Near Iron Mountain, Michigan, Adren Rigdon
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The magnetic properties of the ~1.88 Ga Vulcan Iron Formation and Felch Formation were investigated from samples taken from three drill cores through the Felch Trough, north of Iron Mountain, MI. The conducted analyses included measurements of natural remanent magnetization, magnetic hysteresis, first order reversal curves, magnetic anisotropy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron dispersive spectroscopy. The data is compared to the results of a previous magnetic characterization study conducted on surface outcrop samples on two members of the Vulcan formation, the Curry and Traders members, near Iron Mountain, MI. Two distinct members of the Vulcan Formation were identified in the …

The Relationship Between Pcos And Obesity: Which Comes First?, Sara L. Rosenberg
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is recognized as the most common reproductive disorder in women. Obesity is believed to play a central role in the development of PCOS, as many women with this condition are reported to be overweight or obese. A strong correlational relationship exists between PCOS and obesity. This paper examines the relationship between PCOS and obesity in order to determine whether PCOS causes obesity as opposed to obesity causes metabolic changes that lead to PCOS. Analysis was conducted by reviewing and comparing many studies related to the topic. Factors such as insulin resistance, hyperandrogenemia and body fat distribution …
The Dark Sky Character Of Archaeological Landscapes: Cultural Meaning And Conservation Strategies, Frank Prendergast
The Dark Sky Character Of Archaeological Landscapes: Cultural Meaning And Conservation Strategies, Frank Prendergast
Book/Book Chapter
This paper presents the first ever study of light pollution at selected Irish prehistoric archaeological landscapes. The concepts of cosmology and landscape are first briefly described and followed by a summary of early human settlement of the island. Building on this, the extant corpus of early prehistoric megalithic burial tombs is illustrated to show their contrasting distribution patterns and typology. Analysis of tomb locations using nearest-neighbour statistical methods reveals evidence of intentional clustering. Further geo-statistical analysis identifies the geographical locations and the density ranking of these nucleated clusters - a feature especially evident in the passage tomb tradition on this …

Label-Free Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging For Characterization Of Necrotic Tissue Areas On Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Cássio A. Lima, Luciana Correa, Hugh Byrne, Denise M. Zezell
Conference Papers
In this study, FTIR spectroscopy was used to evaluate the overall biochemical status of necrotic tissue areas of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma chemically-induced on mice. FTIR hyperspectral image collected from specimen showed high correlation with the photomicrograph obtained by light microscopy, in which we were able to identify clusters associated to keratin, necrosis and regions with no tissue. Alterations in the protein content were documented in the necrotic tissue areas, indicating changes on protein conformation.

Introduction : Patrimoine/Cultural Heritage In France And Ireland, Eamon Maher, Eugene O'Brien
Books/Chapters
Assessing something as all-pervasive as cultural heritage can run the risk of resorting to cliches and stereotypes, even though these very things are also an integral part ofwhat constitutes the patrimoine ofany given society. The French are rightly acclaimed for their fashion, wines, gastronomy, literature, philosophy, regional specificities, architecture, and cafe culture, to name but a few ofthe Hexagone's most distinctive traits. Ireland, on the other hand, has its pubs, its writers, many ofwhom traditionally spent far too much time in the aforementioned pubs, its fighting spirit, its greenness, its historic struggle with its nearest neighbour, perfidious Albion, its beef …

No Room For Squares: Using Bitmap Masks To Improve Pedestrian Detection Using Cnns., Adam Warde, Hamza Yous, David Gregg, David Moloney
Session 3: Deep Learning for Computer Vision
.
In this paper we investigate a method to reduce the number of computations and associated activations in Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) by using bitmaps. The bitmaps are used to mask the input images to the network that fall within a rectangular window but do not fall within the boundaries of the objects the network is being trained upon. The mask has the effect of rendering the operations on these portions of the training images trivial. The thesis is that applying this approach to CNNs will not degrade accuracy while at the same time reducing the computational workload and reducing …

Deep Cnn Frameworks For Comparison For Malaria Diagnosis, Priyadarshini Adyasha Pattanaik, Zelong Wang, Patrick Horain
Session 2: Deep Learning for Computer Vision
Abstract We compare Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) frameworks, namely AlexNet and VGGNet, for the classification of healthy and malaria-infected cells in large, grayscale, low quality and low resolution microscopic images, in the case only a small training set is available. Experimental results deliver promising results on the path to quick, automatic and precise classification in unstrained images.

Mechanistic Insight Into Tau Fibril Cross-Seeding Barriers: Structural Order And Disorder, Hilary Ann Weismiller
Mechanistic Insight Into Tau Fibril Cross-Seeding Barriers: Structural Order And Disorder, Hilary Ann Weismiller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Filamentous deposition of microtubule-associated protein tau is a hallmark for a number of neurodegenerative diseases collectively termed tauopathies. While tau fibrils are directly linked to the etiology and pathogenesis of these diseases, fibril morphology and their phenotypic presentation can be quite disparate. Alternative splicing of tau results in two main isoform groups, four-repeat (4R) tau and three-repeat (3R), identified by their number of microtubule binding repeats. Some diseases show deposition of both 4R and 3R isoforms, while others show preferential deposition of only one type. The conformational templated growth scheme and trans-synaptic spreading of fibrils is influenced by fibril conformation. …
The Equal Rights Amendment Revisited, Bridget L. Murphy
The Equal Rights Amendment Revisited, Bridget L. Murphy
Notre Dame Law Review
This Note proceeds in three Parts. Part One chronicles the history of the Equal Rights Amendment, from the original attempt at passage through the various reiterations thereafter. Part Two describes the legal background, including constitutional and legislative protection against discrimination on the basis of sex. Part Three of this Note then demonstrates that a faithful understanding of the existing constitutional and legislative protections reveals inherent weaknesses. Specifically, the original understanding of the Fourteenth Amendment did not contemplate protection from sex-based discrimination, and the word “sex” as a prohibited basis for discrimination in Title VII was added as a last-minute attempt …

2019 Faculty Bibliography
Strains with complete morphological match to Pleurocapsa fuliginosa and P. minor were isolated from Oahu (Hawaii, USA), with another strain matching P. minor isolated from a wet rock face in Utah (USA). Phylogenetically these baeocyte and pseudofilament producing strains fell in a single well-supported clade among a number of pleurocapsalean strains. They were sister to a clade of baeocyte-producing strains that lack the ability to form pseudofilaments and likely belong in an as-yet-to- be-described genus. Strains putatively named Pleurocapsa are scattered throughout the Pleurocapsales and Chroococcales, indicating a need for clear definition of the genus so that revisionary work and …

When evolutionarily divergent lineages adjoin their geographic ranges after a period of isolation, myriad outcomes can occur, from population anastomosis to the evolution of reproductive isolation by way of reinforcement. Hybrid zones represent natural experiments that may indicate whether lineages will maintain their evolutionary independence. Here, we report on a hybrid zone in the Eastern Red-Backed Salamander, Plethodon cinereus, a highly abundant and wide-ranging terrestrial salamander found in the northeastern United States and in southeastern Canada. An earlier study identified six distinct mitochondrial clades across the range of P. cinereus. Populations of two of these clades were as close as …
