Learning From Their Mistakes - An Online Approach To Evaluate Teacher Education Students' Numeracy Capability, Thuan Thai, Kate Hartup, Adelle Colbourn, Amanda Yeung

Education Conference Papers

Teachers’ numeracy capability is essential for student learning in the classroom and important across all subject areas, not only within mathematics. This study investigated the use of online diagnostic tests as a form of assessment for learning, to evaluate and support teacher education students (TES) in developing their numeracy skills. Data was collected using the “Test” feature through the Blackboard learning management system at two Australian universities. In this paper, we report on trends amongst TES who showed growth in their numeracy capability through the repeated use of the diagnostic test.

Motor Learning Deficits In Parkinson's Disease (Pd) And Their Effect On Training Response In Gait And Balance: A Narrative Review, Markey Olson, Thurmon E. Lockhart, Abraham N. Lieberman Jan 2019

Motor Learning Deficits In Parkinson's Disease (Pd) And Their Effect On Training Response In Gait And Balance: A Narrative Review, Markey Olson, Thurmon E. Lockhart, Abraham N. Lieberman

Neurology

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder traditionally associated with degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra, which results in bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability and gait disability (PIGD). The disorder has also been implicated in degradation of motor learning. While individuals with PD are able to learn, certain aspects of learning, especially automatic responses to feedback, are faulty, resulting in a reliance on feedforward systems of movement learning and control. Because of this, patients with PD may require more training to achieve and retain motor learning and may require additional sensory information or motor guidance in …

Antecedents Of Workplace Deviance, Taylor Harder Jan 2019

Antecedents Of Workplace Deviance, Taylor Harder

Celebration of Student Scholarship

Workplace deviance occurs in organizations everywhere and has been found to produce detrimental effects to companies such as serious financial loss and higher rates of employee turnover. There has been substantial research conducted investigating different factors that add to the likelihood of employees engaging in deviant behavior. Some of these factors include situational and personality influences, emotions, perceptions, and motivation. By gaining more knowledge of the antecedents of workplace deviance, managers can gain a better understanding of how to both manage and prevent these behaviors. It is important for organizations to find ways to meet the needs of their employees …

Chronic Wasting Disease In Cervids: Prevalence, Impact And Management Strategies, Nelda A. Rivera, Adam L. Brandt, Jan E. Novakofski, Nohra E. Mateus-Pinilla

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that affects members of the cervidae family. The infectious agent is a misfolded isoform (PrPSC) of the host prion protein (PrPC). The replication of PrPSC initiates a cascade of developmental changes that spread from cell to cell, individual to individual, and that for some TSEs, has crossed the species barrier. CWD can be transmitted horizontally and vertically, and it is the only TSE that affects free-ranging wildlife. While other TSEs are under control and even declining, infection rates of CWD continue to grow and the disease distribution continues to expand …

Biology

Skeletal muscle injury provokes a regenerative response, characterized by the de novo generation of myofibers that are distinguished by central nucleation and re-expression of developmentally restricted genes. In addition to these characteristics, myofiber crosssectional area (CSA) is widely used to evaluate muscle hypertrophic and regenerative responses. Here, we introduce QuantiMus, a free software program that uses machine learning algorithms to quantify muscle morphology and molecular features with high precision and quick processing-time. The ability of QuantiMus to define and measure myofibers was compared to manual measurement or other automated software programs. QuantiMus rapidly and accurately defined total myofibers and measured …

Evolution And Diversification Of Fruitfull Genes In Solanaceae, Christopher A. Emerling, Dinusha C. Maheepala, Alex Rajewski, Jenna Macon, Maya Strahl, Natalia Pabón-Mora, Amy Litt Jan 2019

Evolution And Diversification Of Fruitfull Genes In Solanaceae, Christopher A. Emerling, Dinusha C. Maheepala, Alex Rajewski, Jenna Macon, Maya Strahl, Natalia Pabón-Mora, Amy Litt

Biology

Ecologically and economically important fleshy edible fruits have evolved from dry fruit numerous times during angiosperm diversification. However, the molecular mechanisms that underlie these shifts are unknown. In the Solanaceae there has been a major shift to fleshy fruits in the subfamily Solanoideae. Evidence suggests that an ortholog of FRUITFULL (FUL), a transcription factor that regulates cell proliferation and limits the dehiscence zone in the silique of Arabidopsis, plays a similar role in dry-fruited Solanaceae. However, studies have shown that FUL orthologs have taken on new functions in fleshy fruit development, including regulating elements of tomato ripening …

Odontogenic Ameloblast-Associated (Odam) Is Inactivated In Toothless/ Enamelless Placental Mammals And Toothed Whales, Christopher A. Emerling, Mark S. Springer, John Gatesy, Jason Randall, Matthew A. Collin, Nikolai Hecker, Michael Hiller, Frédéric Delsuc

Biology

The gene for odontogenic ameloblast-associated (ODAM) is a member of the secretory calcium-binding phosphoprotein gene family. ODAM is primarily expressed in dental tissues including the enamel organ and the junctional epithelium, and may also have pleiotropic functions that are unrelated to teeth. Here, we leverage the power of natural selection to test competing hypotheses that ODAM is tooth-specific versus pleiotropic. Specifically, we compiled and screened complete protein-coding sequences, plus sequences for flanking intronic regions, for ODAM in 165 placental mammals to determine if this gene contains inactivating mutations in lineages that either lack teeth (baleen whales, pangolins, anteaters) …

Targeting Intracellular Calcium Stores Alleviates Neurological Morbidities In A Dfp-Based Rat Model Of Gulf War Illness, Laxmikant Deshpande, Edna Santos, Kristin Phillips, Robert Blair Jan 2019

Targeting Intracellular Calcium Stores Alleviates Neurological Morbidities In A Dfp-Based Rat Model Of Gulf War Illness, Laxmikant Deshpande, Edna Santos, Kristin Phillips, Robert Blair

Neurology Publications

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic multi-symptom disorder afflicting the veterans of the First Gulf War, and includes neurological symptoms characterized by depression and memory deficits. Chronic exposure to organophosphates (OP) is considered a leading cause for GWI, yet its pathobiology is not fully understood. We recently observed chronic elevations in neuronal Ca2+ levels ([Ca2+]i) in an OP- diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP) based rat model for GWI. This study was aimed at identifying mechanisms underlying elevated [Ca2+]i in this DFP model and investigating whether their therapeutic targeting could improve GWI-like neurological morbidities. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (9-wks) were exposed to DFP …

Evolutionary Relationships Of Courtship Songs In The Parasitic Wasp Genus, Cotesia (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Justin P. Bredlau, Karen M. Kester

Biology Publications

Acoustic signals play an important role in premating isolation based on sexual selection within many taxa. Many male parasitic wasps produce characteristic courtship songs used by females in mate selection. In Cotesia (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Microgastrinae), courtship songs are generated by wing fanning with repetitive pulses in stereotypical patterns. Our objectives were to sample the diversity of courtship songs within Cotesia and to identify underlying patterns of differentiation. We compared songs among 12 of ca. 80 Cotesia species in North America, including ten species that have not been recorded previously. For Cotesia congregata, we compared songs of wasps originating from …

Optical Tweezers As An Effective Tool For Spermatozoa Isolation From Mixed Forensic Samples, Nicole Auka, Michael Valle, Bobby D. Cox, Peter D. Wilkerson, Tracey Dawson Cruz, Joseph E. Reiner, Sarah J. Seashols-Williams Jan 2019

Optical Tweezers As An Effective Tool For Spermatozoa Isolation From Mixed Forensic Samples, Nicole Auka, Michael Valle, Bobby D. Cox, Peter D. Wilkerson, Tracey Dawson Cruz, Joseph E. Reiner, Sarah J. Seashols-Williams

Forensic Science Publications

A single focus optical tweezer is formed when a laser beam is launched through a high numerical aperture immersion objective. This objective focuses the beam down to a diffraction-limited spot, which creates an optical trap where cells suspended in aqueous solutions can be held fixed. Spermatozoa, an often probative cell type in forensic investigations, can be captured inside this optical trap and dragged one by one across millimeter-length distances in order to create a cluster of cells which can be subsequently drawn up into a capillary for collection. Sperm cells are then ejected onto a sterile cover slip, counted, and …

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems: Vaping Away Gum Tissue, Christina Tulloch, Denise Thieleman Jan 2019

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems: Vaping Away Gum Tissue, Christina Tulloch, Denise Thieleman

Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship

Objective: Conventional cigarettes have shown severe toxicity on immune cells and wound healing in the periodontium, but little is known about the comparative effects of vaping or electronic cigarettes. In a substantial shift away from conventional cigarettes, vaping and e-cigarette sales have increased nearly 600% since 2017. If current conventional cigarette users are to transition to a less detrimental alternative, the evidence must demonstrate if electronic nicotine delivery systems can be deemed safer than conventional options.

Methods: By compiling data from the PubMed database, the most recent perspectives on new smoking methods and effects of usage on periodontal tissues were …
