Somatics Research Bibliography: A Working Tool For Somatics And Somatic Psychology, Eleanor Criswell Hanna
Somatics Research Bibliography: A Working Tool For Somatics And Somatic Psychology, Eleanor Criswell Hanna
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Many years ago when Somatics magazine was young, it occurred to me that it would be valuable to collect and publish research article references in Somatics magazine that were relevant to the different somatics disciplines to encourage the development of the field. There were next to no studies devoted to Somatics itself, but there were many studies devoted to the elements of somatic practices. Somatics is a multidisciplinary field. It builds on the research findings from many fields, such as anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, psychology, dance, biomechanics, and education. The references are selected to be suggestive to the interested researcher and …
Augmented Reality And Health Informatics: A Study Based On Bibliometric And Content Analysis Of Scholarly Communication And Social Media, Nilish Gupte
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Healthcare outcomes have been shown to improve when technology is used as part of patient care. Health Informatics (HI) is a multidisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption, and application of IT-based innovations in healthcare services delivery, management, and planning. Augmented Reality (AR) is an emerging technology that enhances the user’s perception and interaction with the real world. This study aims to illuminate the intersection of the field of AR and HI. The domains of AR and HI by themselves are areas of significant research. However, there is a scarcity of research on augmented reality as it applies to health …
Drug Rehabilitation: Is It Effective In Decreasing The Drug Epidemic On Long Island, New York, Alexandra Sade De Costa
Drug Rehabilitation: Is It Effective In Decreasing The Drug Epidemic On Long Island, New York, Alexandra Sade De Costa
Selected Full-Text Master Theses Collection 2018-
This research will explain what rehabilitation is and the depths of it as well as analyze the question of whether or not rehabilitation is effective in decreasing the drug epidemic on Long Island. Some indicators of effectiveness are when drug-related deaths decrease, when fewer offenders are in jail for drug charges/recidivism rates decrease, when drugs sales have been lowered, and when more addicts remain sober (relapse rates decrease) and return to productive functioning lives. Treatment is effective when it is available, attends to multiple needs of an individual (not just their drug abuse), and offers each individual the proper treatment. …
Anti-Viral Abilities Of Dabco-Conjugated Molecules, Mia Jensen
Anti-Viral Abilities Of Dabco-Conjugated Molecules, Mia Jensen
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Viral infections cause many detrimental diseases throughout the world and are difficult to treat due to their use of the host’s own cells. In addition, viruses have high mutation rates making them difficult to target with medical treatments. Studies done with DABCO-Conjugated molecules have showed promising results in removing viruses from environments. DABCO molecules are unique due to their ability to bind covalently to carbohydrate and protein based surfaces, such as cotton and wood. This provides opportunity to create antiviral surfaces, such as filters and fabrics which can be used to treat viral infections and minimize the possible transfers. It …

The Effect Of Various Vinegars On Infectious Diseases And Body Metabolism, Alexandria Hutchins
The Effect Of Various Vinegars On Infectious Diseases And Body Metabolism, Alexandria Hutchins
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Regular vinegar and apple cider vinegar have historically been used as home remedies to cure illness and diseases; however, not enough empirical research has been done to substantiate these assertions. This thesis will discuss the different ways that various vinegar forms affect one’s body metabolism, and the effect that they have on infectious diseases. This is an important topic to examine because of the growing number of infectious diseases. Vinegar contains polyphenols, which display antioxidant qualities in the body. Polyphenols found in the acetic acid of vinegar also inhibit microbial growth. This microbial growth is usually controlled by antimicrobials; however …
Social Behavior Of Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) And The Expression Of The Stress Hormone Cortisol, Vanessa Finazzo
Social Behavior Of Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) And The Expression Of The Stress Hormone Cortisol, Vanessa Finazzo
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Zebrafish are often used in studies involving social behavior because they readily form shoals. A shoal is any group of fish congregating together for social reasons. Zebrafish form shoals because of the many benefits these social groups provide such as defense against predators and improved foraging success. Because the zebrafish is an animal that exists in a large social grouping, it provides an interesting perspective on understanding the influences of stress on social behavior. Using zebrafish as a model, this thesis aims to determine how specific social situations are affected by and affect stress and associated cortisol levels. In order …
The Way It Should Be: Towards Healthy Masculinity, Jenna Gadille
The Way It Should Be: Towards Healthy Masculinity, Jenna Gadille
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
My thesis paper explains how my research on the pervasiveness of gendered violence provided the material we used to devise a show. I analyze what causes the issue of specifically gendered violence, instead of just “violence”. I focus on the gender binary and how it creates an unhealthy practice of masculinity, which is a major contributing factor to gendered violence. My ensemble used that research to create devised pieces during the process, which we molded into an original show we titled Beyond Us. To start, we identified why the topic mattered to us and why we were all in a …
Utilizing Art Therapy To Overcome Cumulative Trauma Experienced By Adolescents Admitted Into The Foster Care System, Adela R. Ramos-Saenz
Utilizing Art Therapy To Overcome Cumulative Trauma Experienced By Adolescents Admitted Into The Foster Care System, Adela R. Ramos-Saenz
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
This research studied the effects of art therapy on a foster care child whom experienced multiple cumulative traumas in her biological household and is struggling to assimilate with her current foster family. This research consists of a qualitative secondary analysis of a previous case study conducted by Meghan J. Krikorian (2008). While Krikorian designed an ABA format study measuring self-concept before and after receiving individual art therapy sessions, this study focuses on maladaptive behavior and the transformation it undergoes with a stable and intimate therapeutic relationship. Two African American children participated in Krikorian’s study, an eight-year-old female and a nine-year-old …
Gendered Violence: An Epidemic, Megan Breit
Gendered Violence: An Epidemic, Megan Breit
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
This thesis examines the roots of gendered violence as the focus for creating a 15-minute devised performance along with Jenna Gadille and Julia Vaughn. My specific research is broken up into three categories: Toxic Masculinity, Domestic Violence, and Violence in Pop-Culture and Media. The performance featured three women, and was developed over a four-week rehearsal process. We used physical theatre to explore our research on gendered violence with a theme of female empowerment, in a physical way to be translated into theatre. In March of 2019, our thesis entitled “Beyond Us” ran for three performances in The Little Theatre Rifle …
Physics And Mathematics Behind Tomographic Techniques Of Medical Imaging, Thomas Reid
Physics And Mathematics Behind Tomographic Techniques Of Medical Imaging, Thomas Reid
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Aside from that of x-rays, the important methods of medical imaging provide 3-dimensional views of the human body. The mathematics behind this is called reconstructive tomography. Indeed, “C.A.T.” is an anagram for computed axial tomography. There are two other important tomographic techniques in use. Magnetic resonance imaging and positron imaging. In this thesis we explain the physics and some of the mathematics behind each.

The Behavioral Effects Of Riluzole On Memory, Coordination, And Stereotypy In Cd-1 Mice, Janine Gelles
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
ALS one of the most common fatal neurodegenerative diseases to date among the adult population. Symptoms of ALS lead to the atrophy neuromuscular junctions, deterioration of upper and lower motor neurons in the nervous system, neuronal death, and eventually respiratory failure. Main genes discussed that are known to lead to ALS when mutated or disrupted include SOD-1, TARDBP, FUS, C9orf72. Glutamate excitotoxicity has also been linked to overstimulation of neurotransmitters in the brain causing complications that result in ALS. There are only two FDA approved drugs in the U.S. to treat symptoms ALS, one of them being the drug Riluzole. …

Political And Governance Challenges To Achieving Global Hiv Goals With Injecting Drug Users: The Case Of Pakistan, Ashley M. Fox, Hina Khalid
Political And Governance Challenges To Achieving Global Hiv Goals With Injecting Drug Users: The Case Of Pakistan, Ashley M. Fox, Hina Khalid
Public Administration and Policy Faculty Scholarship
Background
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has recently set the ambitious “90-90-90 target” of having 90% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) know their status, receive antiretroviral therapy (ART), and achieve viral suppression by 2020. This ambitious new goal is occurring in a context of global “scale-down” following nearly a decade of heightened investment in HIV prevention and treatment efforts. Arguably international goals spur action, however, setting unrealistic goals that do not take weak health systems and variations in the nature of the epidemic across countries into consideration may set them up for failure in unproductive ways …
Rebooting Empathy For The Digital Generation Lawyer, Lauren A. Newell
Rebooting Empathy For The Digital Generation Lawyer, Lauren A. Newell
Law Faculty Scholarship
There is a growing preference in today’s technology-saturated society for online interaction via email, text messages, social networks, and instant messaging, rather than real-world interaction through face-to-face or telephonic conversations. For today’s young people—the Digital Generation—this is more than a mere preference; it is a way of life. Research indicates that the movement toward virtual communication comes with negative consequences, such as poor real-world communication skills and underdeveloped social skills. Most significantly, research suggests that the Digital Generation are less empathic than elder generations are. Some researchers speculate that the rising prominence of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in everyday …
Supporting Psychological Well-Being In Emerging Adults With Mental Illness: Effect Of A Self-Affirmation Intervention On Resilience, Empowerment, And Self-Stigma, Robert Manning
Psychology Honors Papers
The primary aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of an empirically-validated self-affirmation intervention, under conditions of social identity threat for mental illness, in comparison to a control intervention, on resilience, empowerment, self-esteem, hope, group identity, and self-stigma. Data were collected from Connecticut College undergraduate students who identified with having past or present difficulties with their mental health over three time points. Participants responded to four questions about their mental health history as a social identity threat induction prior to engaging in a randomly assigned intervention. They also self- assessed their levels of the primary outcomes using established …

Neurons consume the highest amount of oxygen, depend on oxidative metabolism for energy, and survive for the lifetime of an individual. Therefore, neurons are vulnerable to death caused by oxidative-stress, accumulation of damaged and dysfunctional proteins and organelles. There is an exponential increase in the number of patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s (AD) as the number of elderly increases exponentially. Development of AD pathology is a complex phenomenon characterized by neuronal death, accumulation of extracellular amyloid-β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, and most importantly loss of memory and cognition. These pathologies are most likely caused by mechanisms including …

Adipocyte functionality, including adipocyte differentiation and adipokine secretion, is essential in obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. Here, we provide evidence that Ca2+ influx in primary adipocytes, especially upon store-depletion, plays an important role in adipocyte differentiation, functionality, and subsequently metabolic regulation. The endogenous Ca2+ entry channel in both subcutaneous and visceral adipocytes was dependent on TRPC1-STIM1 and blocking Ca2+ entry with SKF-96365 or TRPC1-/- derived adipocytes inhibited adipocyte differentiation. Additionally, TRPC1-/- mice have decreased organ weight, but increased adipose deposition and reduced serum adiponectin and leptin concentrations, without affecting total adipokine expression. Mechanistically, TRPC1- mediated Ca2+ entry regulated SNARE complex formation and …

Tar Baby: The Performance Of Object, Ra Malika Imhotep
Tar Baby: The Performance Of Object, Ra Malika Imhotep
Living Objects: African American Puppetry Essays
This essay engages the figure of the “Tar Baby” as a guide through the theoretical terrain of Afro-Diasporic storytelling culture. Thinking about the role of gesture and voice in the repertoire of global Black performance, this presentation sets out to offer a nuanced Black feminist analysis of the sticky character and the impact of her diasporic flight. Calling in both theoretical work on Black performance and personal reflections on an engagement with the Tar Baby through storyteller and puppeteer Akbar Imhotep’s rendition of the story performed at the Wren’s Nest in Atlanta Georgia, the essay explores the ways Afro-Diasporic storytelling …
