Angiotensinogen (AGT) is the unique substrate of all angiotensin peptides. We review the recent preclinical research of AGT antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), a rapidly evolving therapeutic approach. The scope of the research findings not only opens doors for potentially new therapeutics of hypertension and many other diseases, but also provides insights into understanding critical physiological and pathophysiological roles mediated by AGT.

Peptoids are versatile peptidomimetic molecules with wide-ranging applications from drug discovery to materials science. An understanding of peptoid sequence features that contribute to both their three-dimensional structures and their interactions with lipids will expand functions of peptoids in varied fields. Furthermore, these topics capture the enthusiasm of undergraduate students who prepare and study diverse peptoids in laboratory coursework and/or in faculty led research. Here, we present the synthesis and study of 21 peptoids with varied functionality, including 19 tripeptoids and 2 longer oligomers. We observed differences in fluorescence spectral features for 10 of the tripeptoids that correlated with peptoid flexibility …

Prioritizing Stream Barrier Removal To Maximize Connected Aquatic Habitat And Minimize Water Scarcity, Maggi Kraft, David E. Rosenberg, Sarah E. Null
Prioritizing Stream Barrier Removal To Maximize Connected Aquatic Habitat And Minimize Water Scarcity, Maggi Kraft, David E. Rosenberg, Sarah E. Null
Watershed Sciences Student Research
Instream barriers, such as dams, culverts, and diversions, alter hydrologic processes and aquatic habitat. Removing uneconomical and aging instream barriers is increasingly used for river restoration. Historically, selection of barrier removal projects used score‐and‐rank techniques, ignoring cumulative change and the spatial structure of stream networks. Likewise, most water supply models prioritize either human water uses or aquatic habitat, failing to incorporate both human and environmental water use benefits. Here, a dual‐objective optimization model identifies barriers to remove that maximize connected aquatic habitat and minimize water scarcity. Aquatic habitat is measured using monthly average streamflow, temperature, channel gradient, and geomorphic condition …

Behavioral And Dopaminergic Factors Associated With Risky Decision-Making In Rats: Implications For Substance Abuse, Daniel Gabriel
Behavioral And Dopaminergic Factors Associated With Risky Decision-Making In Rats: Implications For Substance Abuse, Daniel Gabriel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Excessive risky decision-making is common in multiple psychiatric disorders, including substance abuse disorder. The risky decision-making task (RDT) models addiction-relevant risk-taking in rats by measuring preference between a small reward and large reward associated with systematically increasing risk of shock. This thesis examined the relationship between risk-taking in the RDT and multiple cognitive and neurobiological addiction-relevant phenotypes. Risk-taking was associated with elevated impulsive action, but not impulsive choice or habit formation. Furthermore, risk-taking predicted locomotor sensitivity to first-time nicotine exposure and resilience to nicotine-evoked anxiety. Finally, risk-taking was associated with elevated phasic dopamine release and sensitivity to the dopamine transporter …

What’S The Use Of Conflict In Dewey? Toward A Pedagogy Of Compromise, Christophe Point
What’S The Use Of Conflict In Dewey? Toward A Pedagogy Of Compromise, Christophe Point
Education and Culture
In this article, we argue for the importance of the notion of conflict in John Dewey's philosophy. Indeed, many criticisms have been leveled against Dewey regarding his political philosophy and his philosophy of education based on the idea that he underestimated the conflict inherent in human affairs. These criticisms are compelling because they link the two sides—educational and political—of Dewey's philosophy. Critics simultaneously address their criticisms to one side vis-à-vis the adverse consequences caused as a result of the other side. In response to this analysis, we want to argue that conflict is indispensable for understanding the theory of inquiry …
Progressive Education And Racial Justice: Examining The Work Of John Dewey, Kelly Vaughan
Progressive Education And Racial Justice: Examining The Work Of John Dewey, Kelly Vaughan
Education and Culture
John Dewey was a progressive theorist, a pragmatist, a philosopher, and arguably the most influential American educator of the twentieth century. Yet, despite extensive documentation about John Dewey's philosophies of education and democracy, there is limited research and no consensus about Dewey's views about race and racism. I use a combination of primary sources, secondary sources, and archival data to explore the John Dewey's ideas about progressivism, racism, and schooling. I assert that Dewey, despite an expressed commitment to full and equal rights for African American students, normalized the experience of White students and implicitly endorsed accommodationist education reforms for …
Effect Of Dissolved Salts On The Physiochemical Properties Of Deep Eutectic Solvents, Eleanor Haeska, Megan Radtke
Effect Of Dissolved Salts On The Physiochemical Properties Of Deep Eutectic Solvents, Eleanor Haeska, Megan Radtke
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Green chemistry seeks to make chemical procedures safer, improve reaction efficiency, and utilize environmentally safe reagents. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have recently become of great interest due to their eco-friendly nature and functionality as solvent for various chemical processes. One key characteristic of DES is their conductive nature and depressed melting point. This project sought to determine the effect of the addition of aqueous solutions of halides on the conductivity of two selected types of DES. Also assessed were the polarity and viscosity of the DES. It can be concluded that aqueous halides had no measureable effect on the conductivity …

Pinngortitaq – A Place Of Becoming, Ann E. Lennert, Jørgen Berge
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Arctic ecosystems are on the verge of changes that are unprecedented in both magnitude and velocity. We stress that statements of a changing climate and environment have ambiguous definitions in both theoretical and metaphorical senses. Inuit have embraced the idea of an environment in a process of Pinngortitaq – a place of becoming – rather than a process of changing. In this note, we accentuate how a philosophy of a world becoming can inspire to answer some of the complex environmental questions asked today by enabling more flexible management regimes in the future.

The majority of wood-boring ambrosia beetles are strongly attracted to ethanol, a behavior which could be exploited for management within ornamental nurseries. A series of experiments was conducted to determine if ethanol-based interception techniques could reduce ambrosia beetle pest pressure. In two experiments, trap trees injected with a high dose of ethanol were positioned either adjacent or 10–15 m from trees injected with a low dose of ethanol (simulating a mildly stressed tree) to determine if the high-dose trap trees could draw beetle attacks away from immediately adjacent stressed nursery trees. The high-ethanol-dose trees sustained considerably higher attacks than the …

The current study examined predictors of undergraduate science students’ intentions to attend graduate school and participate in undergraduate research. We used social cognitive career theory to test our hypothesized model using a sample (N ¼ 411) of life science and physical science majors and examined basic interests in these disciplines as mediating variables. Among life science majors, results of structural equation modeling indicated that microbiology interest mediated the relationship between scientific self-efficacy (SSE) and graduate education intentions (GEIs) and the latter variable also mediated the relationship between microbiology interest and undergraduate research intentions (URIs). The model for physical science majors …

Background: A longstanding notion in the concept of psychosis is the prominence of loosened associative links in thought processes. Assessment of such subtle aspects of thought disorders has proved to be a challenging task in clinical practice and to date no surrogate markers exist that can reliably track the physiological effects of treatments that could reduce thought disorders. Recently, automated speech graph analysis has emerged as a promising means to reliably quantify structural speech disorganization. Methods: Using structural and functional imaging, we investigated the neural basis and the functional relevance of the structural connectedness of speech samples obtained from 56 …

Diet Of Trachemys Scripta (Red-Eared Slider) And Graptemys Geographica (Common Map Turtle) In An Urban Landscape, Travis Ryan
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Urban environments present many challenges for aquatic turtle species. Here, we investigated whether the diets of Trachemys scripta (Red-eared Slider) and Graptemys geographica (Common Map Turtle) may help explain the spatial ecology of these 2 species in a pair of constructed aquatic habitats in Indianapolis, IN, USA. We conducted stomach flushings on 43 turtles from 2 sites (Central Canal, n = 33; IMA Lake, n = 10). Common Map Turtles from the Central Canal (n = 27) consumed mostly mollusks and crayfish, which comprised ~86% of the volume of stomach contents. We captured no adult Common Map Turtles at IMA …

Two and a half billion times per day a human hand reaches for a fresh cup of coffee. Although arguably dispensable for life per se, with an industry value of US$174 billion, coffee provides the lifeblood that sustains economies of producing countries located in the “coffee belt” situated between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. As a “solvent” in which many human interactions take place, coffee is witness to the broad spectrum of human activities from the mundane to the pleasurable and personal. However, in opposition to its economic, cultural, and physiological importance, diseases such as coffee rust (caused by …

Examining The ‘Cosmetics Placebo Effect’, Carlota Batres, Sarah S. Kramer, Caroline G. Deangelis, Richard Russell

Previous studies have found a positive effect of cosmetics on certain behavioral measures, such as the tip given to waitresses by male patrons. These studies have employed confederates who usually wear cosmetics. We therefore sought to examine whether the positive effect found in these studies could, in part, be explained by a change in behavior. In order to test the possibility of a ‘cosmetics placebo effect’, we employed a confederate to solicit donations from passersby. On some days our confederate would not have any cosmetics applied to her face (i.e., no cosmetics condition), on some days cosmetics were pretended to …

Background: There is a paucity of data on the role of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) in patients with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). Using the CIBMTR registry, we report here the outcomes of AITL patients undergoing an allo-HCT.
Methods: We evaluated 249 adult AITL patients who received their first allo-HCT during 2000–2016.
Results: The median patient age was 56 years (range = 21–77). Majority of the patients were Caucasians (86%), with a male predominance (60%). Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis was predominantly calcineurin inhibitor-based approaches while the most common graft source was peripheral blood (97%). Median follow-up of survivors was 49 …

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be understood as a social interaction disorder. This requires researchers to take a “second-person” stance and to use experimental setups based on bidirectional interactions. The present work offers a quantitative description of movement patterns exhibited during computer-mediated real-time sensorimotor interaction in 10 dyads of adult participants, each consisting of one control individual (CTRL) and one individual with high-functioning autism (HFA). We applied time-series analyses to their movements and found two main results. First, multi-scale coordination between participants was present. Second, despite this dyadic alignment and our previous finding that individuals with HFA can be equally …

Objective: Fusion of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) breast images with microwave tomography is accomplished through a soft prior technique, which incorporates spatial information (from MRI), i.e. accurate boundary location of different regions of interest, into the regularization process of the microwave image reconstruction algorithm. Methods: Numerical experiments were completed on a set of 3D breast geometries derived from MR breast data with different parenchymal densities, as well as a simulated tumor to evaluate performance over a range of breast shapes, sizes and property distributions. Results: When the soft prior regularization technique was applied, both permittivity and conductivity relative root mean …
