The Principles Of Organizational Inaction, Roger A. Lohmann
The Principles Of Organizational Inaction, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Organization inaction and the absence of change are seriously understudied topics. This article (a spoof) reports on a research problem that identifies and studies four principles of organizational inaction: The time, subject matter, group size and controversy theorems together and separately explain a great deal of committee and organizational inaction. The article also introduces innovative techniques of invariant statistics and mystery sampling. The article is an extensive rewrite of a 'research report' that originally appeared in a peer-reviewed administrative humor journal, The Bureaucrat, in 1979.
Framing Resilience For River Geomorphology: Reinventing The Wheel?, Dave J. Gilvear
Framing Resilience For River Geomorphology: Reinventing The Wheel?, Dave J. Gilvear
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Resilience is a well-used term in many disciplines, but inconsistently or little applied in river geomorphology and river science. Recent developments in ecosystem ecology conceptualize resilience as comprising system resistance to, and recovery from disturbance. The objectives of this paper are to consider how the concept of resilience in this bivariate form applies to river geomorphology and provide a framework for bridging the disciplines of ecology and geomorphology within the setting of river management, using principles of resilience. River geomorphology sets the physical template upon which lotic processes act, thus, understanding the resilience of this template is critical. The importance …

Phylochromomap, A Tool For Mapping Phylogenomic History Along Chromosomes, Reveals The Dynamic Nature Of Karyotype Evolution In Plasmodium Falciparum, Mario A. Cerón-Romero, Esther Nwaka, Zuliat Owoade, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The genome of Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of malaria in Africa, has been extensively studied since it was first fully sequenced in 2002. However, many open questions remain, including understanding the chromosomal context of molecular evolutionary changes (e.g., relationship between chromosome map and phylogenetic conservation, patterns of gene duplication, and patterns of selection). Here, we present PhyloChromoMap, a method that generates a phylogenomic map of chromosomes from a custom-built bioinformatics pipeline. Using P. falciparum 3D7 as a model, we analyze 2,116 genes with homologs in up to 941 diverse eukaryotic, bacterial and archaeal lineages. We estimate the level of …

Forest and Society
The Manokwari Declaration is an unprecedented pledge by the governors of Indonesia’s two New Guinea provinces to promote conservation and become SE Asia’s new Costa Rica. This is an exciting, yet challenging endeavour that will require working on many fronts that transcend single disciplines. Because Indonesian New Guinea has the largest expanse of intact forests in SE Asia, large-scale conservation pledges like the Manokwari Declaration will have a global impact on biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.

The Politics, Economies, And Ecologies Of Indonesia’S Third Generation Of Social Forestry: An Introduction To The Special Section, Micah R. Fisher, Ahmad Dhiaulhaq, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide
Forest and Society
Although Indonesia is experiencing one of the most complex transformations of social forestry policy in the world, there is a need to step back and more closely examine the politics, ecologies, and economies that provide context for its implementation. This introduction offers a synthesis of the collection of special section submissions in Forest and Society. We begin by navigating the current social forestry moment by presenting a heuristic for identifying the discourses underpinning the rapid expansion in support of social forestry schemes. These perspectives are fragmented across four continuously contested discourses: community-first, legal-first, conservation-first, and development-first. We then contextualize the …

What Is Success? Gaps And Trade-Offs In Assessing The Performance Of Traditional Social Forestry Systems In Indonesia, Indah Waty Bong, Moira Moeliono, Grace Yee Wong, Maria Brockhaus
Forest and Society
Despite the growing interest in social forestry (SF), how much do we understand the social, economic and environmental outcomes and the conditions that enable SF to perform? In this article, we use a content analysis of literature on existing traditional SF practiced throughout Indonesia. It examines the outcomes of these systems and the conditions that enabled or hindered these outcomes to understand possible causal relations and changing dynamics between these conditions and SF performance. We discuss the gaps in how SF is assessed and understood in the literature to understand the important aspects of traditional SF that are not captured …

An Evaluation Of Training Size Impact On Validation Accuracy For Optimized Convolutional Neural Networks, Jostein Barry-Straume, Adam Tschannen, Daniel W. Engels, Edward Fine
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present an evaluation of training size impact on validation accuracy for an optimized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNNs are currently the state-of-the-art architecture for object classification tasks. We used Amazon’s machine learning ecosystem to train and test 648 models to find the optimal hyperparameters with which to apply a CNN towards the Fashion-MNIST (Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology) dataset. We were able to realize a validation accuracy of 90% by using only 40% of the original data. We found that hidden layers appear to have had zero impact on validation accuracy, whereas the neural …

An Analysis Of Mothers And Fathers Who Kill Their Children: Examining Offense Characteristics And Adjudication Outcomes, Kristen R. Beyer, Eric Hickey, Deanna Bishop-Deaton
2019 Program & Posters
Filicide is a crime that conflicts with nature in that it undermines our genetic fitness and parental investment and defies attachment theory. Yet, despite the crime of filicide being counterintuitive, the media frequently reports on cases involving parents who have killed their own child. This analysis involves examining open-source cases of 100 mothers and 100 fathers who have killed their children. Analyses will compare the differences between mothers and fathers in terms of offender and victim demographics, as well as mental health and criminal histories. Offense characteristics and adjudication outcomes will also be examined.

Understanding sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) response to multiple pest injury, sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis) and spittlebug (Mahanarva fimbriolata), is essential to make better management decisions. Moreover, the consequences of both pests on the sugarcane raw material quality have not yet been studied. A field experiment was performed in São Paulo State, Brazil, where sugarcane plants were exposed to pests individually or in combination. Plots consisted of a 2-m long row of caged sugarcane plants. Photosynthesis was measured once every 3 months (seasonal measurement). Yield and sugar production were assessed. The measured photosynthesis rate was negatively affected by both borer and spittlebug …

Hazardous Waste Site Proximity And Type 2 Diabetes: From Youths To Adults, Theresa Ann Johnson
2019 Program & Posters
Human exposure to environmental toxins has been correlated with diabetes. To examine the relationship between remote exposure to hazardous waste sites (HWS) and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the National Priorities List of Superfund sites were analyzed. The results support obesity and advanced age as risk factors for T2DM and suggest that non- Hispanic Whites residing farther from a HWS had a reduced risk for T2DM. The social change contribution is in supporting environmental health assessments in clinical practice and influencing dialogue about social justice and the distribution of HWS.

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
The nearly-ubiquitous food and feed-borne mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is carcinogenic and mutagenic, posing a food safety threat to humans and animals. One of the most susceptible animal species known and thus a good model for characterizing toxicological pathways, is the domesticated turkey (DT), a condition likely due, at least in part, to deficient hepatic AFB1-detoxifying alpha-class glutathione S-transferases (GSTAs). Conversely, wild turkeys (Eastern wild, EW) are relatively resistant to the hepatotoxic, hepatocarcinogenic and immunosuppressive effects of AFB1 owing to functional gene expression and presence of functional hepatic GSTAs. This study was designed to …

Residues Of Thiamethoxam And Mefenoxam In Vegetative And Floral Tissue Of Soybean At The Early Reproductive Stage Resulting From Seed Treatments, Carolina Camargo, Daniel D. Snow, Sathaporn Onanong, Thomas Hunt, Blair Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Thiamethoxam with mefenoxam is the most widely used neonicotinoid insecticide/fungicide mixture applied to soybean (Glycine max [L]) as seed treatments. Based on the systemic nature of thiamethoxam and mefenoxam, residues of this insecticide/fungicide mixture may be present in soybean vegetative and floral tissue and negatively impact beneficial insects. Although neonicotinoids are often applied in combination with systemic fungicides, the research on ecological risks of neonicotinoids has been focused on the analysis of these compounds without considering their interaction with other agrochemicals. The objective of this study was to identify the concentration of thiamethoxam and mefenoxam in soybean flowers and …

Inferring The Distribution Of Selective Effects From A Time Inhomogeneous Model, Amei Amei, Shilei Zhour
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research
We have developed a Poisson random field model for estimating the distribution of selective effects of newly arisen nonsynonymous mutations that could be observed as polymorphism or divergence in samples of two related species under the assumption that the two species populations are not at mutation-selection-drift equilibrium. The model is applied to 91Drosophila genes by comparing levels of polymorphism in an African population of D. melanogaster with divergence to a reference strain of D. simulans. Based on the difference of gene expression level between testes and ovaries, the 91 genes were classified as 33 male-biased, 28 female-biased, and 30 sex-unbiased …

Book Review Extract:
Wayne Carp is rightly celebrated as the official historian of American adoption reform. He continues his important work, begun with Family Matters: Secrecy and Disclosure in the History of Adoption in 1998 and continued with Adoption Politics: Bastard Nation and Ballot Initiative 58 in 2004, with a look at the life and times of Jean Paton, a reformer of the 1950s. Carp credits her with a litany of “firsts”: the first to recognize and study adult adoptees; the first to critique the “chosen child” concept; the first to create an organization devoted to adult adoptees; the first …

A Variable Nonlinear Splitting Algorithm For Reaction Diffusion Systems With Self- And Cross-Diffusion, Matthew Beauregard, Joshua L. Padgett
Faculty Publications
Self- and cross-diffusion are important nonlinear spatial derivative terms that are included into biological models of predator-prey interactions. Self-diffusion models overcrowding effects, while cross-diffusion incorporates the response of one species in light of the concentration of another. In this paper, a novel nonlinear operator splitting method is presented that directly incorporates both self- and cross-diffusion into a computational efficient design. The numerical analysis guarantees the accuracy and demonstrates appropriate criteria for stability. Numerical experiments display its efficiency and accuracy

Stigmatization And Mental Illness: The Communication Of Social Identity Prototypes Through Diagnosis Labels, Justin Samuel Leverett
Dissertations and Theses
This study tested whether participants exposed to a vignette describing an individual experiencing symptoms of depression, which included only the specific diagnosis label of "depression," would report significantly less stigmatized responses than participants exposed to an otherwise identical vignette which included only the non-specific diagnosis label "mental illness." The study is grounded in past research on stigmatization of mental illness and is informed by three theoretical frameworks, the social identity perspective, attribution theory, and labeling theory. Participants were randomly assigned to read one of the two alternate vignettes, then respond to a series of measures testing desire for social distance, …
