The Many Benefits Of Urban Green Spaces, Junainah Abu Kasim, Mohd Johari Mohd Yusof, Helmi Zulhaidi Mohd Shafri
CSID Journal of Infrastructure Development
Recently, the ideology of greenery city has received global attention which aimed to address the issues of rapid urbanization, population growth and climate change. Urban green spaces (UGS) seem as the most essential asset that could help cities to mitigate the adverse effects of rapid urbanization and urban sprawl in a sustainable way. It plays a vital role in our cities as an urban lung, discharging oxygen to reduce the city’s heat, the wall for harmful air pollution and offer greatest benefits in term of environment, social and economy to a city. However, the presence of UGS as one of …

The MITF transcription factor is a master regulator of melanocyte development and a critical factor in melanomagenesis. The related transcription factors TFEB and TFE3 regulate lysosomal activity and autophagy processes known to be important in melanoma. Here we show that MITF binds the CLEAR-box element in the promoters of lysosomal and autophagosomal genes in melanocytes and melanoma cells. The crystal structure of MITF bound to the CLEAR-box reveals how the palindromic nature of this motif induces symmetric MITF homodimer binding. In metastatic melanoma tumors and cell lines, MITF positively correlates with the expression of lysosomal and autophagosomal genes, which, interestingly, …

Immunomodulation of the immune system by stimulating or suppressing one or both arms, is an emerging concept driven by the understanding of the host defense system. In particular, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) functions not only as a site for digestion and absorption of nutrients but also acts as a metabolic and immunological organ. This serves as a barrier against abnormal presentation of luminal constituents, caused by dysfunctional intestinal epithelial barrier, to the mucosal immune system. Invasion by pathogens in the case of disease or stress or a massive influx of commensal bacteria overcomes the defensive mechanisms, resulting in the full …

Many aspects of the laboratory environment are not tailored to the needs of rodents, which may cause stress. Unpredictable stressors can cause ulcers, prolonged pituitary-adrenal activation, and anhedonia. Similarly, pain has been demonstrated to slow wound healing, and mice experiencing pain exhibit altered behavior. However it is unknown how husbandry, which occurs when the mice are inactive, and lack of analgesia, specifically in a punch biopsy procedure, effects animal physiology, behavior, and welfare, particularly as it relates to sleep fragmentation. We hypothesized that sleep fragmentation, induced by unpredictable husbandry and lack of pain management will slow wound healing. Two main …

Informational Asymmetry In Public Participation On Environmental Monitoring In Indonesian Regulation: A Preliminary Discourse, Deni Daniel, Palupi Hapsari
CSID Journal of Infrastructure Development
Public participation has been viewed as crucial component in environmental management. Public participation enables the community to inform the project proponents and government agencies on local knowledge and aspiration to be considered in decision-making process. Based on our literature review we found that effective participation in monitoring might be hampered by informational asymmetry and the opportunistic nature of firms. In the case of Indonesia, little has been discussed on the possible informational asymmetry on the public participation process in environmental management. This paper aims to give a normative analysis on the current regulation of public participation in Indonesia to identify …

The Effect Of Dynamic Kinetic Selection On An Evolving Ribozyme Population, Patrick David Poletti
The Effect Of Dynamic Kinetic Selection On An Evolving Ribozyme Population, Patrick David Poletti
Dissertations and Theses
Dynamic Kinetic Selection (DKS) suggests that kinetic, rather than thermodynamic, stability will dictate the composition of a replicating population of biomolecules. Here, the results obtained from a series of five related reactions involving gradually increasing percentages of randomly-mutated substrate fragments to generate variants of full-length Azoarcus group I intron through an autocatalytic self-assembly reaction involving a series of recombination events, showed DKS as a driving factor in dictating the population composition of full-length product assembled from substrates that had fewer positions available to randomization.
In trying to elucidate a plausible scheme for the origins of complex biomolecules on the prebiotic …

This research was aimed to describe the function of teacher’s motivation speech in SMA Katolik Diponegoro Blitar. The function of speech is divided into three categories, those are the function of fact information exchange, function f emotion exchange, and function of convicing of affecting. These three functions appear when the teacher gives the motivation speech in learning process, especially on Bahasa subject. The existence of those functions in the teacher’s motivation speech shows that in the learning process is not only focus on the material delivery, but also giving motivation from the teacher to students with purposed function.

Connecting Bridges Through Theatrical Design: An Examination Of “Asiri Nla” In Performance, Tochukwu J. Okeke
Connecting Bridges Through Theatrical Design: An Examination Of “Asiri Nla” In Performance, Tochukwu J. Okeke
International Review of Humanities Studies
The theatre provides an avenue for the expression of very salient and topical issues about a people through the presentation of performances. These performances, which are often in form of plays, are always created by playwrights and that is why playwrights are said to be the watch dogs of the society because their works x-ray past and present situations while proffering solutions for the future. However, the theatre is a composite art which involves the collaboration of many creative artists: Playwright, Director, Stage Manager, Actor(s), Designer(s), amongst others. The designer(s) are the creative artists that interpret the play in visual …
Effects Of Egg Intake On Choline Metabolism And Hdl Functionality In A Healthy Population, Bruno S. Lemos
Effects Of Egg Intake On Choline Metabolism And Hdl Functionality In A Healthy Population, Bruno S. Lemos
Doctoral Dissertations
A major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). High-density lipoprotein (HDL) functionality can play a role in reducing risk for CVD by assisting in cholesterol homeostasis. Additionally, high plasma trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) concentrations are related to increased CVD risk and increased atherosclerosis progression. Eggs are a rich source of dietary choline, a precursor for TMAO formation. Therefore, the effects of egg intake in comparison to a choline bitartrate supplement were explored in a young, healthy population. The aim was to show the benefits of egg consumption without increasing risk for CVD in young adults. The …

Ecology Center Publications
Climate refuges have been used by several species over historical climate change. Ectothermic species often display good models for climate change studies because they are highly sensitive to temperature. Analysis of species loss with ecosystem and evolutionary values helps to understand environmental processes and climate change consequences. We determined the functional and phylogenetic diversity of amphibians in the Atlantic Forest hotspot, using multiple models representing present and future conditions. Through a novel approach, we predict species’ threat status by 2080, following the IUCN’s criterion B1. Our results estimate a drastic reduction in species richness, ecosystem functioning and evolutionary history at …

This document aims to agree on a broad, international strategy for the implementation of open scholarship that meets the needs of different national and regional communities but works globally.
Scholarly research can be idealised as an inspirational process for advancing our collective knowledge to the benefit of all humankind. However, current research practices often struggle with a range of tensions, in part due to the fact that this collective (or “commons”) ideal conflicts with the competitive system in which most scholars work, and in part because much of the infrastructure of the scholarly world is becoming largely digital. What is …
Understanding Myd88-Dependent And -Independent Mechanisms Of Phagosomal Signaling And Inflammation Elicited By Borrelia Burgdorferi, The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Sarah Benjamin
Doctoral Dissertations
Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi(Bb). It is believed that the robust inflammatory response induced by the host’s innate immune system is responsible for the clinical manifestations associated with Bb infection. The macrophage plays a central role in the immune response to many bacterial infections and is thought to play a central role in activation of the innate immune response to Bb. Previous studies have shown that following phagocytosis of spirochetes by macrophages, phagosome maturation results in degradation of Bband liberation of bacterial lipoproteins and nucleic acids, which are recognized by …

Femtosecond Laser Transient Spectroscopy Of Carotenoids And Carbon Nanotubes, Soroush Khosravi Dehaghi
Doctoral Dissertations
Carotenoids and semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes, which are both nanoscale carbon-based quantum mechanical systems, were studied using different optical spectroscopy techniques in this dissertation. In both cases, adelocalized molecularorbital system governs the interaction with the visible light. The ultrafast dynamics of thesedelocalized molecularorbital systems right after the excitation with visible femtosecond laser pulses were investigated.
The lineshapes and respective lifetimes of the excited states involved in the decay process of two photoexcited carotenoids, spheroidene and spheroidenone, were examined using transient absorption and transient grating spectroscopy. By employing a model-based lifetime analysis routine, written as part of this dissertation, the lifetimes …

Woody plants vary in their adaptations to drought and shade. For a better prediction of vegetation responses to drought and shade within dynamic global vegetation models, it is critical to group species into functional types with similar adaptations. One of the key challenges is that the adaptations are generally determined by a large number of plant traits that may not be available for a large number of species. In this study, we present two heuristic woody plant groups that were separated using cluster analysis in a three-dimensional trait–environment space based on three key metrics for each species: mean xylem embolism …
