Marine fish species can exhibit sex‐specific differences in their biological traits. Not accounting for these characteristics in the stock assessment or management of a species can lead to misunderstanding its population dynamics and result in ineffective regulatory strategies. Summer Flounder Paralichthys dentatus, a flatfish that supports significant commercial and recreational fisheries along the northeastern U.S. shelf, expresses variation in several traits between the sexes, including growth and habitat preference. To further understand these patterns, 1,302 Summer Flounder were collected and sexed in 2016 and 2017 from fisheries‐independent surveys conducted in Rhode Island state waters. Female flounder were more prevalent …

Detection Of Mg2+-Dependent, Coaxial Stacking Rearrangements In A Bulged Three-Way Dna Junction By Single-Molecule Fret, Michael P. Leveille, Thao Tran, Gianna Dingillo, Brian Cannon
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Three-way helical junctions (3WJs) arise in genetic processing, and they have architectural and functional roles in structured nucleic acids. An internal bulge at the junction core allows the helical domains to become oriented into two possible, coaxially stacked conformers. Here, the helical stacking arrangements for a series of bulged, DNA 3WJs were examined using ensemble fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and single-molecule FRET (smFRET) approaches. The 3WJs varied according to the GC content and sequence of the junction core as well as the pyrimidine content of the internal bulge. Mg2+ titration experiments by ensemble FRET show that both …

Seagrass meadows are important coastal ecosystems that are declining worldwide. Given the profound impact of the microbiome on plant health, exploration of the seagrass microbiome is critical for proper ecosystem management and conservation. Although prior studies have investigated seagrass‐associated bacteria, fungi, and protists, virtually nothing is known about viruses infecting these flowering marine plants. Here, we report genomic and microscopic evidence of a new positive‐sense, single‐stranded ribonucleic acid virus infecting apparently healthy Thalassia testudinum in Florida. The virus, named turtlegrass virus X (TVX), shares 66% genome‐wide pairwise identity with foxtail mosaic virus, a potexvirus that infects terrestrial grasses. Quantitative polymerase …

Accurate estimates of reproductive potential are a key component of any stock assessment. Multiple factors influencing the variability in batch fecundity of stone crabs Menippe spp. across the Florida fishery were quantified with a negative binomial regression model. Stone crabs were collected bimonthly from Cedar Key, Tampa Bay, Pavilion Key, and Sawyer Key from April 2013 through April 2015 for fecundity analysis. Batch fecundity (number of eggs per clutch) was estimated by using dry weights. Modeling results revealed that fecundity was strongly and positively related to carapace width and highly variable among locations, months, and years. Batch fecundity was lowest …

Measuring CD4 counts remains an important component of HIV care. The Visitect CD4 is the first instrument-free low-cost point-of-care CD4 test with results interpreted visually after 40 min, providing a result of 350 CD4 cells/mm3. The field performance and diagnostic accuracy of the test was assessed among HIVinfected pregnant women in South Africa. A nurse performed testing at the point-ofcare using both venous and finger-prick blood, and a counselor and laboratory staff tested venous blood in the clinic laboratory (four Visitect CD4 tests/participant). Performance was compared to the mean CD4 count from duplicate flow cytometry tests on venous blood (FACSCalibur …
A Wall Impervious To Facts: Seawalls, Living Shorelines, And The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers' Continuing Authorization Of Hard Coastal Armoring In The Face Of Sea Level Rise, Travis Brandon
Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article critiques the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ continued authorization of hard coastal armoring under Nationwide Permit 13 (NWP 13) in light of mounting scientific evidence demonstrating the ecological, physical, and economic harms associated with seawalls and bulkheads. Despite documented reductions in biodiversity, accelerated shoreline erosion, and the impairment of wetland migration under conditions of sea level rise, the Corps reissued NWP 13 in 2017, allowing significant shoreline stabilization projects without individualized review. At the same time, the Corps adopted Nationwide Permit 54 to streamline approval of “living shorelines,” a more ecologically adaptive alternative, yet imposed comparatively stricter conditions …

The United States incarcerates more individuals per capita than any other nation. According to Porter, Bushway, Tsao, & Smith (2016), “There are currently 2.1 million individuals detained in the correctional institutions in the United States. Young adults, individuals between the ages of 18 and 25, represent the smallest portion of the general population yet comprise the largest portion of the incarcerated population. Furthermore, African Americans comprise 13% of the general population of the United States but comprise 58% of the prison populations in the United States. Finally, the recidivism rate, the rate at which former inmates recriminalize and return to …

Executive control is a higher‐level cognitive function that involves a range of different processes that are involved in the planning, coordination, execution, and inhibition of responses. Many of the processes associated with executive control, such as response inhibition and mental flexibility, decline with age. Degeneration of white matter architecture is considered to be the one of the key factors underlying cognitive decline associated with aging. Here we investigated how white matter changes of the corpus callosum were related to cognitive aging in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). We hypothesized that reduction in myelin thickness, myelin density, and myelin fraction …

Three aligned, electro spun fiber scaffolds with unique surface features were created from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Fibers without surface nano topography (smooth fibers), fibers with surface divots (shallow pits), and fibers with surface pits (deeper pits) were fabricated, and fiber alignment, diameter, and density were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Whole dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were isolated from rats and placed onto uncoated fibers or fibers coated with laminin. On uncoated fibers, neurite outgrowth was restricted by fibers displaying devoted or pitted nano topography when compared to neurite outgrowth on smooth fibers. However, neurites extending from whole DRG cultured …

The prepared catalyst could be used as an …
Pornography Induced Erectile Dysfunction Among Young Men, Hamdija Begovic
Pornography Induced Erectile Dysfunction Among Young Men, Hamdija Begovic
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
This paper explores the phenomenon of pornography induced erectile dysfunction (PIED), meaning sexual potency problems in men due to Internet pornography consumption. Empirical data from men who suffer from this condition have been collected. A combination of topical life history method (with qualitative asynchronous online narrative interviews) and personal online diaries has been employed. The data have been analyzed using theoretical interpretative analysis (according to McLuhan’s media theory), based on analytic induction. The empirical investigation indicates that there is a correlation between pornography consumption and erectile dysfunction that suggests causation. The findings are based on 11 interviews along with two …
Parenteral Ascorbic Acid For Treatment Of Sepsis, Lindsey Hiatt
Parenteral Ascorbic Acid For Treatment Of Sepsis, Lindsey Hiatt
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Sepsis kills nearly 1 million people each year in the United States and sepsis-related hospitalizations cost approximately $24 billion annually (Paoli, Reynolds, Sinha, Gitlin, & Crouser, 2018). Current treatment guidelines are limited to targeted antibiotics and hemodynamic support. While antibiotics are the definitive treatment to eradicate the infectious pathogen, there are currently no standard-of-care treatments that consistently and successfully attenuate the damage sustained to the body by its own inflammatory response to infection. Many different treatments have been trialed and failed to show improved outcomes. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, has long been associated with supporting immune function, and has …
Manifold-Valued Image Generation With Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Nets, Zhiwu Huang, Wu J., G. L. Van
Manifold-Valued Image Generation With Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Nets, Zhiwu Huang, Wu J., G. L. Van
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Generative modeling over natural images is one of the most fundamental machine learning problems. However, few modern generative models, including Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Nets (WGANs), are studied on manifold-valued images that are frequently encountered in real-world applications. To fill the gap, this paper first formulates the problem of generating manifold-valued images and exploits three typical instances: hue-saturation-value (HSV) color image generation, chromaticity-brightness (CB) color image generation, and diffusion-tensor (DT) image generation. For the proposed generative modeling problem, we then introduce a theorem of optimal transport to derive a new Wasserstein distance of data distributions on complete manifolds, enabling us to …

Frequent exposure to green space has been linked to positive health and well-being in varying populations. Yet, there is still limited research exploring the restorative benefits associated with differing types of green space use among students living in the university setting. To address this gap, we explored green space use amongst a population of undergraduate students (n = 207) attending a university with abundant opportunities to access the restorative properties of nature. The purpose of this study was to examine the type and frequency of green space interactions that are most strongly associated with indicators of health and well-being, and …

Background: Novel strategies to increase the efficacy of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs will be of crucial importance. We hypothesize that membranes of HIV-1-infected cells and enveloped HIV-1 particles may be preferentially targeted by the phytopeptide, cycloviolacin O2 (CyO2) to significantly enhance ARV efficacy.
Methods: Physiologically safe concentrations of CyO2 were determined via red blood cell (RBC) hemolysis. SYTOX-green dye-uptake and radiolabeled saquinavir (³H-SQV) uptake assays were used to measure pore-formation and drug uptake, respectively. ELISA, reporter assays and ultracentrifugation were conducted to analyze the antiviral efficacy of HIV-1 protease and fusion inhibitors alone and co-exposed to CyO2.
Results: CyO2 concentrations below …

Rooftop Recipes For Relating: Ecologies Of Humans, Animals, And Life, Noha Fikry
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the particularly lively rooftops of Cairo through which interspecies intimacies unfold. On these rooftops, various animals (such as chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, goats, and rabbits) are raised to be later eaten and consumed for sustenance. Throughout the various thesis chapters, I try and expose the various patterned modalities, terms, and codes bringing these different species together in their sustained long-term relationships. I follow these interspecies relations as they narrate wonders of life-and-death, collaborations, various instantiations of home, social gift exchanges, marital rituals, and grieving patterns. These relations involve different tasks, requiring a very specific and complex gendered …
Genetic Diversity Comparison Among Invasive Fish Populations (Nemipterus Randalli And Serranus Cabrilla) From Mediterranean And Red Sea Coastal Waters Using Cytochrome C Oxidase Subunit I (Coi), Joel Ogwang
Theses and Dissertations
Since the Suez Canal connected the Red Sea with the Mediterranean, several fish species have migrated between the two seas. Nemipterus randalli has crossed from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean (Lessepsian migration) whereas Serranus cabrilla is considered to have crossed in the reverse direction (anti-Lessepsian migration). Genetic variation between populations of these fish species on either side of the Suez Canal might provide valuable information on their patterns of migration. In this study, 600 bp of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences were used to compare genetic diversity of populations of N. randalli from the eastern Mediterranean with …

Nano Particle Formulation Of Phoenix Dactylifera L. (Ajwah And Black Date) Seed And Peel And Investigating Their Antioxidant And Antibacterial Properties, Jailan Essam Badawi
Theses and Dissertations
Bacterial infection is one of the leading causes of death world-wide. Antibiotics have always been the first choice to be used against bacterial infections especially in post-surgery, diabetes mellitus due to their lack of immunity and in organ transplantation as well. On the other side the medical antibiotics have a major problem which is the resistance; meaning that after sometime the body begins to resist them and they became with no action on bacteria. That is why it is a global trend now to shift back to the natural resources from plant origin which exhibit potent antibacterial action. As an …

Water is life and Egypt faces an ongoing problem of unsafe water quality. People, especially in rural areas, are becoming ill and might not even be aware it is partially due unclean water they are consuming. This is a qualitative study that, from both social and public health lenses, aims at comparing the perception of families in Egyptian villages (end users) towards the water they are receiving in their homes with the situation as described (and seen by the author) by the service provider (government) within the entire process of clean water provision. In-depth interviews were conducted with families from …
Mining For Specialized Metabolism Genes In Red Sea Brine Pool Prokaryotic Metagenomes For Antibacterial And Anticancer Activities, Laila Ziko
Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotic and anticancer drug resistance are current global health threats, thus new antibiotics and anticancer agents are required to treat the strains and cancers that are currently untreatable with the available drug spectrum. One way to search for new chemotherapeutics is to search nature, particularly metagenomes of un-cultured microbial communities. A subset of specialized metabolites (SMs) produced by microbes confer activities of pharmaceutical importance, such as antibacterial and anticancer effects, and are coded by specialized metabolism gene clusters (SMGCs) in the organisms’ genomes. We aimed to search for SMGCs in the metagenomes of Red Sea brine microbial communities by employing …
