Small Peptide Ligands For Targeting Egfr In Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Hanieh Hossein-Nejad-Ariani, Emad Althagafi, Kamaljit Kaur

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The efficacy of chemotherapy for cancer treatment can be increased by targeted drug delivery to the cancer cells. This is particularly important for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) for which chemotherapy is a major form of treatment. Here we designed and screened a library of 30 peptides starting with a previously reported epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) targeting peptide GE11 (YHWYGYTPQNVI). A direct peptide array-whole cell binding assay, where the peptides are conjugated to a cellulose membrane, was used to identify four peptides with enhanced binding to TNBC cells. Next, the four peptides were synthesized as FITC-labelled soluble peptides to …

Glint Correction Of Unmanned Aerial System Imagery, Ryan T. Ford, Anthony Vodacek Feb 2019

Glint Correction Of Unmanned Aerial System Imagery, Ryan T. Ford, Anthony Vodacek

Presentations and other scholarship

Glint in aquatic imagery captured by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) is a limiting factor when performing spectral analysis. It cannot be corrected by methods developed for space-based imaging systems, meaning new approaches are required. Two processes using in-situ radiometric data were developed augmenting an established method for removing atmospheric effects from imagery, the Empirical Line Method (ELM), to remove glint from multispectral UAS imagery. The results of this correction showed good agreement with in-situ spectroradiometer measurements and similar accuracy to atmospherically compensated satellite measurements. The Root-Mean-Square Error of the UAS retrieved remote sensing reflectance was as low as 0.0004 sr …

Electron Attachment And Electron Ionization Of Formic Acid Clusters Embedded In Helium Nanodroplets, Masoomeh Mahmoodi-Darian, Linnea Lundberg, Samuel Zottl, Paul Scheier, Olof Echt

Faculty Publications

We report the results of an experimental study of electron ionization of large helium nanodroplets doped with formic acid (FA). Several homologous series of cluster anions are observed, including [FAn-H]−, undissociated FAn−, and these ions complexed with one or more H2O. Some major features resemble those observed upon sputtering of frozen FA films but they differ significantly from results obtained by electron attachment to bare FA clusters in the gas phase. The FAn− and (H2O)[FAn-H]− series show abrupt onsets above n = 2 and 5, respectively. A prominent resonance in the anion yield occurs at 22.5 eV due to the …

Mechanical Behaviors Of Hydrogel-Impregnated Sand, Kejun Wen, Yang Li, Wei Huang, Catherine Armwood, Farshad Amini, Lin Li

Civil and Architectural Engineering Faculty Research

Hydrogel has been widely used in medical studies due to their unique integration of solid and liquid properties. There is limited studies of using hydrogel in construction materials. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrogel on mechanical behaviors of sandy materials. The effects of reaction time, sodium alginate content, and curing temperature on mechanical behaviors of hydrogel-impregnated sand were studied through unconfined compression tests, falling head permeability tests, consolidated and undrained triaxial tests, scanning electron microscopy, and durability tests. The unconfined compression strength (UCS) increased with sodium alginate content, but the hydraulic conductivity of hydrogel-impregnated …

Saturated Fatty Acid Activates T Cell Inflammation Through A Nicotinamide Nucleotide Transhydrogenase (Nnt)-Dependent Mechanism, Grace Mccambridge, Madhur Agrawal, Alanna Keady, Philip A. Kern, Hatice Hasturk, Barbara S. Nikolajczyk, Leena P. Bharath

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Circulating fatty acids (FAs) increase with obesity and can drive mitochondrial damage and inflammation. Nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (NNT) is a mitochondrial protein that positively regulates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), a key mediator of energy transduction and redox homeostasis. The role that NNT-regulated bioenergetics play in the inflammatory response of immune cells in obesity is untested. Our objective was to determine how free fatty acids (FFAs) regulate inflammation through impacts on mitochondria and redox homeostasis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). PBMCs from lean subjects were activated with a T cell-specific stimulus in the presence or absence of generally pro-inflammatory …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Substrate Release From Trypanosoma Cruzi Udp-Galactopyranose Mutase, Rodrigo Cossio-Pérez, Gustavo Pierdominici-Sottile, Pablo Sobrado, Juliana Palma

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The enzyme UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) represents a promising drug target for the treatment of infections with Trypanosoma cruzi. We have computed the Potential of Mean Force for the release of UDP-galactopyranose from UGM, using Umbrella Sampling simulations. The simulations revealed the conformational changes that both substrate and enzyme undergo during the process. It was determined that the galactopyranose portion of the substrate is highly mobile and that the opening/closing of the active site occurs in stages. Previously uncharacterized interactions with highly conserved residues were also identified. These findings provide new pieces of information that contribute to the rational design of …

Ecology Center Publications

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is designed to facilitate an understanding of the impact of environmental change on ecological systems. Observations of plant diversity—responsive to changes in climate, disturbance, and land use, and ecologically linked to soil, biogeochemistry, and organisms—result in NEON data products that cross a range of organizational levels. Collections include samples of plant tissue to enable investigations of genetics, plot-based observations of incidence and cover of native and non-native species, observations of plant functional traits, archived vouchers of plants, and remote sensing airborne observations. Spatially integrating many ecological observations allows a description of the relationship of …

Incorporating Temperature And Precipitation Extremes Into Process-Based Models Of African Lepidoptera Changes The Predicted Distribution Under Climate Change, Madeleine G. Barton, John S. Terblanche, Brent J. Sinclair Feb 2019

Incorporating Temperature And Precipitation Extremes Into Process-Based Models Of African Lepidoptera Changes The Predicted Distribution Under Climate Change, Madeleine G. Barton, John S. Terblanche, Brent J. Sinclair

Biology Publications

Terrestrial insects are responding to ongoing climate change. While these responses have been primarily linked to rising temperatures, insects are sensitive to desiccation, and the impacts of altered precipitation regimes remain relatively unexplored. Here, we develop a mechanistic model of survival and performance responses to both temperature and desiccation stress, focussing on Lepidoptera in Africa, where a general understanding of such responses to climate change is urgently required. We run the model with climate data from general circulation models at daily time intervals under current (2011–2015) and projected future (2046–2050) climate scenarios. We first simulate four hypothetical, but typical, Lepidoptera …

Water Quality Modeling Of Mahabad Dam Watershed–Reservoir System Under Climate Change Conditions, Using Swat And System Dynamics, Mohammad Nazari-Sharabian, Masoud Taheriyoun, Sajjad Ahmad, Moses Karakouzian, Azadeh Ahmadi

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The total phosphorus (TP) concentration, as the primary limiting eutrophication factor in the Mahabad Dam reservoir in Iran, was studied, considering the combined impacts of climate change, as well as the scenarios on changes in upstream TP loadings and downstream dam water allocations. Downscaled daily projected climate data were obtained from the Beijing Normal University Earth System Model (BNU-ESM) under moderate (RCP4.5) and extreme (RCP8.5) scenarios. These data were used as inputs of a calibrated Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model of the watershed in order to determine the effects of climate change on runoff yields in the watershed …

Bridging The Divide Between Animal Protection And Traditional Conservation Biology, William S. Lynn, John Hadidian Feb 2019

Bridging The Divide Between Animal Protection And Traditional Conservation Biology, William S. Lynn, John Hadidian

WellBeing News

It was some time before wildlife conservation came to be recognized as a science but its focus was mainly on the regulation of game species through hunting seasons. The modern development of Conservation Biology, following the environmental revolution of the 1970s, focused on the preservation of species, with little to no focus placed on individual animals. This led conservationists and animal welfare advocates to regard each other with suspicion and distrust. That division is now being challenged with the rise of alternative paradigms of conservation, one of which is called Compassionate Conservation that takes the well-being of wild lives as …

Magnetic Field Aided Indoor Navigation, William F. Storms

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines inertial navigation system aiding using magnetic field intensity data and a Kalman filter in an indoor environment. Many current aiding methods do not work well in an indoor environment, like aiding using the Global Positioning System. The method presented in this research uses magnetic field intensity data from a three-axis magnetometer in order to estimate position using a maximum – likelihood approach. The position measurements are then combined with a motion model using a Kalman filter. The magnetic field navigation algorithm is tested using a combination of simulated and real measurements. These tests are conducted using …

Effects Of Land Use On Greenhouse Gas Flux In Playa Wetlands And Associated Watersheds In The High Plains, Usa, Dale W. Daniel, Loren M. Smith, Scott T. Mcmurry, Brian A. Tangen, Charles F. Dahl, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Ted Lagrange

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

In the High Plains, U.S., native prairie conversion to cropland agriculture has resulted in a loss of service delivery capabilities from most depressional wet-lands as a result of sedimentation. Restoring historic hydrological conditions to affected wetlands may rejuvenate some services, however, there may be tradeoffs due to emissions of CH4 and N2O. We evaluated the influence of two predominant conservation programs (Wetlands Reserve Program, WRP and Conservation Reserve Program, CRP) on gas emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O) from 42 playas and uplands in the High Plains of Nebraska. Because playa restoration through the WRP is most prevalent in the Rainwater Basin …
